television event in history. we'll have the full report coming up here tonight. we begin in ukraine are where russian-backed rebels reportedly slaughtered more than 30 ukrainian soldiers over the weekend. and with reports today that a coalition of former national security advisers pushing the president to arm the ukrainian forces. fox news' national security correspondent jennifer griffin with the report. >> reporter: russian-backed forces continued their fight to take a strategic rail town in eastern ukraine. [gunfire] after overrunning the doe netsing -- done etsing airport. >> are we're continually assessing options but i certainly don't have anything new to announce at this point. >> reporter: senior officials say the issue is under review as eight former national security advisers urged president obama to provide $3 billion in

anti-armor missiles, drones and armored vehicles to ukraine. among the proponents, michelle flournoy whose name had been floated for defense secretary and former nato supreme allied commander admiral james -- [inaudible] quote: only if the kremlin knows that the risks and costs of further military action are high will it seek to find an acceptable political solution. the west has the capacity to stop russia. is question is whether it has the will. three former secretaries of state delivered a similar message last week on capitol hill. >> we do have to help them in terms of military assistance so that they can defend themselves. people do look at how we react when one country invades another and takes a piece of territory. that is breaking the international system and therefore, i do think that it's important to take a strong stand there. >> reporter: former soviet leader mikhail gosh chof warned the west could be turning a cold war into a quote, hot one.

to give ukraine something. a lot of the obama administration people want to do something, give them something more than we've given them to date which is happy meals and blankets. lou: how do you even make the judgment? i'm -- i don't understand, i can't find any empirical evidence of what they want to do. they have shrouded every sentence, every statement, every action in utter ambiguity, amorphous nonsense that is posing as some sort of national -- >> oh, the obama administration? i don't think they have a clue. but if they do give ukraine defensive weapon, it's not going to change the outcome because -- lou: what is the outcome? >> putin's not going to let this get away. lou: so it's going to be a russian eastern ukraine. >> i think it's going -- lou: or will it with a russian ukraine? >> that's to be determined. i i think certainly a russian eastern ukraine or at least ukraine which is in chaos for a long time in the east. i don't think putin can back down. why? because 14 months ago his popularity wasless than 50%.

lou: and we've got these softists in the national media -- some of them in the international media -- acting as though israel were a foe, not our key ally. >> look, the obama administration publicly privately whispering campaign has said it's israel's fault we don't have a palestinian/israeli peace agreement -- lou: why in the world aren't the republicans standing up and saying wait a minute in. >> they should be. lou: the great thing is john barren to his immense credit and, i believe to the lasting credit of the republican party will have a strong voice talking about the reality of middle east politics and policies in netanyahu before the joint session of congress. without him what would we be hearing? >> oh, i think we would be hearing a real separation of the united states and israel. you know israeli-american relationship has lasted through republicans and democrats. this is the first time it has been in this kind of danger.

does his answer about the 99.9% of muslims, as he put it suggest we are not aligned with all who seek only order, peace and prosperity? is or is he suggesting that most muslims are not aligned with us? and whose responsibility is it, after all, to be aligned? and then the president says he's not quibbling with labels although that is obviously precisely what he is doing. and this coming from a president and an administration which have deemed the islamic state jv but not islamic. he calls the taliban an armed insurgency but not terrorists. and al-qaeda he acknowledges to be terrorists but on the run and decimated. president obama implies too often for my taste that plain old american citizens like you and me are too stupid to distinguish between plain old

muslims and plain old radical islamist terrorists. so he feels obliged to not overtax our feeble little minds and, therefore he feels he must not speak either plainly or specifically or, as it turns out, truthfully. and with such lofty purpose and high consideration of the sensitivities of the very people who we would at any other time in our history under any other president call enemies our president concerns himself with the avoidance of overstating the importance or the power of terrorist groups. and in any way suggesting they pose an existential threat to our country. the soft first try of this imperialist president and his politically-correct nonsense is endless. unchecked or critically assessed by our national liberal media. for example, are the iranians and al-qaeda existential threats to, perhaps, say israel?
