piper i hope they come up with a deal. heather, you were great. >> thanks! >> you should try the cd thing. >> it's a lot easier when i know what's coming at me. charles: keep it right here on fox business. lou: good evening, everybody. i'm lou dobbs. the city of charleston, south carolina preparing for what will be a week of funerals for the victims of last week's massacre in a historical black church in which nine people were killed. over the weekend, area residents tried to drown out the heat evoked by the shooting as they came together to urge unity, faith and forgiveness across the city. governor nikki haley today stressed the same need for unity across her state when she called for the confederate battle flag to be removed from the state capital. >> we are not going to allow this symbol to divide us any longer. the fact that people are
7:01 pm
choosing to use it as a sign of hate is something we cannot stand. the fact that it causes pain to so many is enough to move it from the capitol grounds. it is after all, a capitol that belongs to all of us. lou: president obama was having none of the example set by charleston and south carolina leaders. mr. obama was instead following his nature. finding ways to express divisiveness rather than unity and embark on a pseudogenetic rationalization what he perceived as racism and awkward insistence on using a racial slur. the president using the racial epithet as if his use of the word would somehow support his insistence that racism is alive and well in america. the president's use of the racial epithet came during an interview taped last week with the los angeles comedian but it is not the last time certainly he's used it.
7:02 pm
fox news white house correspondent kevin court with our report. >> reporter: his candor has caused an uproar. when the president told a podcast audience that the united states had not overcome its history of racism he used the "n" word to make the case. >> racism we are not cured of, clearly. and it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say [ bleep ] in public that's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. >> reporter: a broader discussion on race and followed the deadly attack in south carolina that saw alleged white supremacist murder nine blacks at a church bible study. race relations have vastly improved. >> it is incontrovertible that race relations have improved significantly during my lifetime and yours. >> reporter: the uproar caught the white house offguard, though it wasn't the first time the president used the "n" word it. appears in his best-selling
7:03 pm
book dreams of my father, and the president reads that word allowed. >> there's no decision on the part of anybody at the white house we're going to capitalize on the audio interview from somebody's garage in california. >> reporter: the podcast chat was with comedian marc maron, but there was nothing funny about gun control, inciting devastating gun violence in aurora, sandy hook and charleston. the president cited stricter gun laws. >> i will tell you after sandy hook in newtown when 26 were gunned down and congress literally does nothing. >> reporter: critics said his tone and timing were terrible. >> south carolina has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, and all of the things that president obama has been lobbying for are in place in south carolina, clearly they did not prevent the tragedy. >> i think when there's thatchevil in the heart, it is
7:04 pm
hard to think of the right legislative solution for that problem. >> reporter: a solution the white house is still searching for. >> there is a simple thing that can be done that doesn't undermine our constitutional rights, that doesn't undermine the constitutional rights of law-abiding americans we shouldn't do it. >> reporter: there's no evident that any of the proposals the president has made would make a difference in what happened in south carolina because the gun used in the shooting, lou was purchased legally. should i point out one other thing we learned tonight, the president vice president and first lady will be headed to south carolina friday where the president will deliver the eulogy for one of the victims killed in the massacre. lou: thank you very much if you will, i'd like you, if you would to stay with us as we share with our audience an exchange which i thought extraordinarily telling in which kevin corke asked the white house press secretary josh earnest a very important question with what is a very
7:05 pm
telling answer. >> reporter: i want to follow up on something a lot of people have been talking about that's the use of the "n" word. does the president condone the use of that word at home? and what would he say to paints who have worked very hard to get their children to not use it even though it's out there, it's in music, especially in urban settings, the parents who have said don't ever use that word, even casually, what does he say to those parents? >> well i guess you probable lehave to ask him, that i didn't. doesn't mean it's an illegitimate question. i think for the president's own personal views you should ask him that. >> bring him out? >> i will see about that. lou: martin knoller following up if i may say kevin bring the president out if you're going to do something as capricious and i frankly thought it was considerably disrespectful to say you take it up with the president when that is exactly what josh
7:06 pm
earnest's job is to do. i want to ask to you comment on that. i want to get from and you share with our audience, what is the presidential perspective here? what is this white house thinking? why would they be taken aback at a nation that just drew in its breath that a president would use a word that is a racial slur common in rap music or not, common on twitter or not? >> i think you're right on the money. i have to say, it got personal for me lou. to be frank as a parent, i don't want to hear that, i don't want to see people use that in any circumstance. some people say grow up, it happens. he was in the context of the discussion about race he was make the point yeah, people use that perhaps in private, that doesn't mean that they don't have is it in their hearts. the problem i have with it and a lot of american people had with the use of that word is
7:07 pm
that once again, the base is the office. can you imagine for a second if a president clinton used that word or a president bush used that word? the firestorm that would have followed. so i don't think he should have used it, and i think the white house, if they were honest about this would probably like to have him take it back. lou: well i know whether the white house would or not, most of the rest of us certainly would. kevin, thank you very much as always. great job reporting on the white house. thank you, kevin corke. >> reporter: my pleasure, lou. lou: we're waiting for the supreme court to rule on a number of legal challenges including the latest challenge to obamacare. but we're learning that the obamacare adviser who took advantage of what he called the quote stupidity of the american voter end quote, had a much bigger role in crafting that law than previously admitted.
7:08 pm
fox news supreme court correspondent shannon bream has our report. >> reporter: new findings by the house oversight committee reveal a higher level of involvement by m.i.t. economist jonathan gruber in the crafting of the affordable care act, than the administration has previously admitted. >> this is not someone who is outside the tent. directly at the center of the tent. >> reporter: in late 2009 e-mails jeanne lambrou who worked at hhs and the white house referred to gruber as an integral part of the process later calling him, quote our hero. the e-mails show stream of e-mails between gruber and top obama administration staff members including the director of the office of budget and management. >> this is not a rogue adviser or someone who is outside the circle. rather, this is someone who is very much a part of the inner circle and was in routine, regular contact with top administration officials.
7:09 pm
>> reporter: yet when videos of gruber surfaced which he referred to, quote, the stupidity of the american voter and also discussed the subsidies now at issue before the supreme court, several top obamacare players saw to distance themselves from him, downplaying impact or they knew him at all? >> i don't know who he is. he didn't help write our bill. >> the fact that some adviser who never worked on our staff expressed an opinion that i completely disagree with in terms of the voters is no reflection on the actual process that was run. >> reporter: records show gruber had more than 20 appointments to visit the white house including a meeting with the president himself, while testifying on capitol hill late last year gruber flatly rejected he was the so-called architect of obamacare. and officials say today's revelations are nothing new. >> i don't think there is anything revealed by the e-mails that is surprising by anybody that works here and doesn't undermine the way his role has been previously
7:10 pm
described by the administration as far as i know. >> reporter: in a letter to hhs secretary sylvia burwell gop chairman jason chaf its has requested detailed information about gruber's work for hhs with a deadline of next tuesday. shannon bream fox news. lou: shannon bream reporting on a continuing developments on obamacare as the court decides its future once again. turning to matters of foreign policy. the obama administration today announced new actions to counter russian aggression. defense secretary ash carter saying the united states will contribute special operations forces, surveillance aircraft and advanced weaponry to a new nato task force designed in part to deter threats by russia. >> we do not seek cold let alone a hot war with russia. we do not seek to make russia
7:11 pm
an enemy. make no mistake we will defend our allies stand up to russia's actions and attempts to establish a soviet era sphere of influence. lou: european union foreign ministers meeting in luxembourg extended sanctions against russia because of the country's actions in annexing crimea and invading eastern ukraine. another roadblock in the obama administration's efforts to reach a nuclear deal with iran by a self-imposed deadline of next tuesday. iran's parliament this weekend didn't help matters, voting to ban international inspectors from iran's military sites and requiring the lifting of all sanctions immediately as part of any final deal. iranian lawmakers reportedly chanting death to america as they voted. the bill still has to be ratified by iran's guardian council but blocking access to
