time slot will be fridays on fbn at 8 p.m. see you then. ♪ ♪ the hat and it's lou dobbs, fox business, have a great weekend. lou: good evening, everybody. i'm lou dobbs. growing concerns that the islamic state could attack this country over our 4th of july holiday. americans around the country are accustomed to heightened security warnings at independence daytime. in fact, it's become almost an annual routine. but we're told this time is different. security experts say that the year long rise of the islamic state is at the foundation of that difference. leaders of the radical islamist terrorist group have been urging supporters to attack over the holy month of ramadan which ends july 17th, and

officials say the symbolism of america's independence day combined with mass gatherings of people at fireworks displays could be targets. there's also evidence that so-called lone wolves have been heeding calls by the islamic state to attack us. last month a boston man became fascinated with the islamic state. he was plotting to behead police officers. in may, two gunmen were killed during an attempted assault on a draw mohammed contest in texas, concerned about terrorist attacks ahead of the july 4th weekend likely prompting a huge response from security officials at the navy yard in washington, d.c. earlier this morning reports of shots fired but therefore thankfully none fired. it turned out to be entirely a false alarm. and a string of false alarms in washington over recent weeks. last month the secret service evacuated the white house briefing room for 30 minutes

because of what they said was a bomb threat phoned into washington police. that very same day capitol police evacuated the dirkson office senate building, after a bomb threat was phoned in. fox news chief intelligent correspondent catherine herridge with the report on the possibility of attacks over this weekend. >> reporter: it was a massive police response on the eve of the july 4th weekend after reports of shots fired. >> received a report of an active shooter at 07:29. we responded to that and called in assistance from metro d.c. >> reporter: then the washington navy yard where 12 employees were gunned down in 2013 by a mentally ill military contractor was in lockdown. as employees took shelter, federal and local law enforcement responded as if the threat was credible. after searching building 197, the same scene as the 013 incident, and questioning the person who called the alarm, police confirmed no active shooter and the all-clear was

given. >> we have interviewed the person, no concerns whatsoever. this is an employee that did exactly what we ask employees to do. >> reporter: d.c. police emphasize the heavy display of force was not a reflection of the heightened threat environment for the holiday weekend. >> we operate in washington, d.c. an elevated threat level at all times. we never lower threat level in terms of our posture and aware of what's the discussion and chatter is around the 4th of july events and all the threats and take those into account. >> reporter: there is a more visible security presence around the nation, investigative source who tracks terrorist social media says chatter has increased, adding this is one of the most severe threat environments over the decades. publicly the administration says there are no credible threats. >> get out and enjoy the holiday. important date in history. i speak for secretary kerry when i say americans should enjoy that. >> reporter: fox news learned the common link between the most recent terror arrests about a dozen since early june

is isis operative who goes by the same isis operative in contact with the two shooters in garland, texas and appeared to have fore knowledge of the plot targeting the cartoon drawing contest. overseas the u.s. air force took the decision to cancel july 4th celebrations at two bases in england because a threat there is severe, and it's also deemed at this time to be credible, lou. lou: catherine, have there been threats that have risen to this level. there seems to be so much more concern being expressed by intelligence and security agencies this time. >> reporter: we've seen a couple of things unfold in the last few weeks. we've seen a shift in the fbi strategy rather than surveil suspects, they're opting to pick them up, get them off the street and build a case against them. that's because we're starting to see probably one of the most worrying trends we've seen in a

decade. people who make contact with isis then within a matter of days can decide to go operational. this is a very short, very truncated time line, that is why the fbi has moved so quickly in these cases and why you're seeing the fbi set up the 56 command posts around the country associated with the field offices for the july 4th weekend, lou. lou: catherine, thank you very much, catherine herridge. >> you're welcome. lou: investors in a wait-and-see mode ahead of a greek vote sunday. the greeks will be voting whether to accept or reject more austerity in exchange for additional money from the country's creditors. talk on a rescue package are on hold until after sunday's referendum results. banks also remain shut and strict atm withdrawal limits in effect. the greek government led by prime minister alexis tsipras is urging greeks for a no vote because he believes rejecting bailout conditions would strengthen his hand in

negotiations with creditors. a yes vote means tsipras government will likely fall. greece's finance minister is expecting optimism saying a deal with the european creditors is a certainty. country's banks will reopen tuesday. but the international monetary fund blames greece's government for this crisis. and the imf is predicting that greece needs $56 billion in new debt relief from october through 2018. turning to our economy and a june jobs report that showed some, some troubling signs of weakness. the economy added a healthy 223,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate did fall to 5.3%. the lowest in seven years. but wages remain flat and the labor force participation rate fell .3% to 62.2%.

that is the lowest labor force participation rate in 38 years when jimmy carter was in office. and part of the reason for that low rate is the fact that 400,000 americans withdrew from the labor force which resulted in the 5.3% unemployment rate. president obama, however insists his economic policies are working. today he traveled to the university of wisconsin lacrosse to promote a new rule that would boost overtime pay for five million american workers. trade groups say the rule will hurt small business and force small businesses to limit hours for employees. turning now to the growing backlash against republican presidential contender donald trump and his comments on illegal immigration. macy's pulled trump's clothing line, nbc fired him and univision announced it would not air the miss u.s.a. pageant because trump owns half of it. now new york city's mayor bill

de blasio says he is reviewing new york's business dealings with the donald. in april, trump opened a $260 million golf course on the site of what was a former city dump in the bronx under a deal with new york's department of parks and recreation. the trump organization managing as well two skating rinks and a carousel in central park, and every instance trump had to bail out city from absolutely, absolutely failing city projects. he manages a lot of property in new york city, of course. i'll be taking up the legal fallout over trump's comments later in this broadcast. we'll be talking with two of the best attorneys in the business, eric guster and wendy patrick. stay with us, we're coming right back. it turns out there is an obama strategy on the islamic state. that strategy apparently to prevent our allies from fighting the islamic state.

. lou: the united states reportedly blocking attempts by middle east allies to fly weapons to the kurds who are fighting in turn the islamic state in iraq. britain's telegraph daily says gulf states are frustrated over the lack of strategic leadership by the obama administration. in fact, they are now going it alone giving heavy weaponry to the kurds, millions of pounds worth of weapons have reportedly been bought by a number of european countries to arm the kurds, but u.s. commanders are not permitting the arms transfers. kurds claim one of the most significant challenges they face in fighting the islamic state is the american-made weaponry that has been obtained by the islamic state and soviet-style equipment. joining me former u.s. ambassador to saudi arabia, currently diplomat and resident at southern methodist

university, robert jordan, the ambassador is the author of the new book, desert diplomat, inside saudi arabia, following september 11th. good to have you with us. >> thank you, lou, good to be with you. lou: let's start with this report that the obama administration is preempting shipments of weaponry and support for the kurds. >> it reflects a lack of strategy for the middle east right now overall. and i think our gulf allies are completely frustrated on a number of counts, and this is the latest chapter. the kurds have been the most effective fighting force out there. they're desperate for equipment, heavier weapons. the problem, though, is that syria, turkey and iran are all opposed to turkish independence, and the theory is if they acquire significant firepower, it will be part of the step, part of the dance down toward independence. my guess is the obama administration is tied in knots a bit because of the nuclear

negotiations with iran. they don't want to upset the dynamics right now and that's probably driving some of the conduct. lou: those are knots that have constrained the administration for the past four years, ever since the united states left iraq. are there knots that they need to cut here and provide weaponry to the kurds and simply take the position the kurds will be an ally of the united states. >> in a vacuum that's what should happen. we have to calibrate what would happen with the turks and the iranians over the long term. but my preference would be, i think, to start filtering weapons for the kurds, let them have victories and tell the turks and iranians, sorry, this is what has to happen on the field of battle. lou: israel has moved troops, soldiers next to the sinai. islamic state in northern sign a, the egyptians moving forces there. 56 soldiers killed by the

islamic state. what do you expect in the next week or two? >> egypt is on the verge of civil war. this is a 50-50 state. while the generals are in control, there's a strong movement to undercut them and again try to overthrow them by the muslim brotherhood. the islamic state is trying to take advantage of this. doing a good job of it. the sinai has been the battlefield for this, it's a hotbed of protest against the regime, and i think we're going to continue to see more violence. >> the relationship between the islamic state and the muslim brotherhood. >> they are co-conspirators in a way. the muslim brotherhood would like to be part of the mainstream, a political party, would like to have a voice in politics that doesn't marginalize and overthrow every other ideology every other interest that's out there. the islamic state, on the other hand, is simply about brutality and power.

they want to take it over at all costs, want to indicate a caliphate, they want to take down the saudi royal family and the gulf regimes. lou: president assisi is facing the ambiguity of the obama white house which made it clear well before president cici's turn in office, irrespective, is there such a preference at work in the policies that the administration is following vis-a-vis egypt, and vis-a-vis the islamic state as well? >> there's been tremendous ambiguity, and certainly at the time when this administration threw mubarak over the side and embraced the muslim brotherhood. president said he wanted to be on the right side of history, now run over by history, and history is not going to be kind because this is a situation that has spun out of control. they were very slow in returning foreign aid to the egyptian government.

they have undercut him, and it does make you wonder what their final objective is. my guess is they don't have one. lou: saudi arabia, it has been a terrifically important ally for this country for decades. you know as much about saudi arabia as any american. we don't seem to be treating our former ally, and i say former ally, they're not being treated as one now, very well. what is behind this? >> i think it's hard to divine. part of it is a lack of personal relationships on the world scale by this president. he doesn't seem to be interested in making personal relationships. second, i think he has this notion there's going to be some sort of popular uprising in the middle east where the gulf monarchies will be made to behave better. human rights and women's rights and religious freedom, which we all support. lou: this administration has basically ignored in that

. lou: tonight we have two more presidential candidates, the governor of wisconsin scott walker filing the paperwork to join the field of 14 republicans. walker's official announcement will be monday, the 13th of july. he rose to national prominence a few years back for taking on the unions. democrats tried to kick him out of office because of that very thing.

they failed because he succeeded. and for the democrats, former senator jim webb is in. that's now five folks for the democrats. webb isn't as far left as his counterparts. in fact politically he's a political descendant of senator henry jackson, a scoop jackson democrat, if you will. strong on military matters and foreign policy. he was secretary of the navy under president ronald reagan. and he's a decorated marine vietnam veteran. a few thoughts tonight about another presidential hopeful, the most flamboyant and the most outspoken candidate in either party. you know, of course, that i'm referring to donald trump. last night i said here that the left's reaction to the trump candidacy and his comments were a sign that america has now entered a new era of partisan and ideological sanctions, boycotts and embargoes. and now come more threats. more economic sanctions, a de

facto left wing boycott of everything trump. the mayor of the people's republic of new york, bill de blasio, immediately responded to trump's candor, announcing the city is reviewing its contracts with the candidate, including a golf course, and an ice skating rink. no matter that in the case of both, trump stepped into complete projects that floundered for years under city administration. and the left will stop at nothing to muzzle the donald, apparently. they found willing even eager allies in corporate america, some of whom are going after trump hard, very hard. macy's halting an 11 year partnership, mattress manufacturer serta ending its relationship and, of course, nbc did the same. univision cutting ties with trump, and oddly enough, the liberal national media making almost no mention that both of those companies are great obama friends and advocates.

by the way, speak of connections, interests and beneficiaries that are not to be spoken of by the national liberal media, do i want to whisper this. univision quietly filed for an ipo. among those who stand to benefit from the public offering, mexican media giant ruppo televisa which could raise ownership stake to 35% by converting debt to stock. we'll see how that works out, and other partners in long suffering private equity firms looking for an exit and chief among them clinton donor and save why are haim saban, he was defiant this morning on fox and friends. >> macy's folded like a wet rag under the pressure. and i don't like people that fold under pressure. nbc was chicken. they folded. univision. univision i think is doing the

work for mexico. just incredible to watch. it's sad to watch. and that's the problem with our country. everyone is so -- it's so important to be politically correct. lou: politically correct sometimes means politically connected. politically connected sometimes means economically connected. like univision. like nbc. like haim saban. people need to talk more about the connections as well. we're watching what i believe to be the opening salvos in what will be a full-on politically motivated economic sxoikz -- sanction and embargo era including of course free speech. this collectivism, this authoritarianism, this fascism call it what you will that we see now on display, donald trump may in fact be among the few who had the guts and the resources to take on these

it turned outob a hoax. the islamic state has called for attacks this month. authorities are taking no chances in responding and enforced almost every threat. greece making a big choice between budget cuts or collapse. the greek prime minister moderating tone somewhat with european leaders, i don't think you could call him humble in any way. he did say he wants to stay in the european union, it's always about what he wants, right? we'll be joined by michael holland for answers when all of this will resolve. about 5,000 people are told not to return after a fiery train crash in maryville, tennessee, south of knoxville. freight train carrying toxic chemicals, early this morning derailed. no one was hurt. no word on the cause of the crash. a new poll shows presidential hopeful bernie sanders closing in on hillary clinton in iowa. clinton now leads among likely democratic caucus goers 52% to

sanders 33. clinton's 19-point lead may seem like a lot, and it is, in may she led sanders by 45 points. sanders managed to jump 26 points in the polls in a single month from supporters who showed up in record numbers at his wisconsin rally. some reports have the head count at, are you ready? 10,000 people! joining us national review editor fox news contributor, rich lowry. conservative strategist black rock senior director lisa boothe, good to have you with us. >> hi, lou. lou: start lisa, with you. 10,000 folks bernie sanders. is that a tilt we're all sensing here? >> that's a lot of people. here look, the difference between bernie sanders and hillary clinton is love him or hate him, bernie sanders stands for something, right? but look the surge we're seeing with bernie sanders isn't happening in iowa, it's also

happening in a state like new hampshire. what's problematic for hillary clinton from the latest quinnipiac poll is that hillary clinton has lost 12 percentage points with women. seen a 12% drop with women voters. this is the constituency she's relying on to help propel her candidacy forward. lou: are you impressed with what sanders is doing here? did you ever expect it, rich? >> not quite this, no. i always thought there was a lot of energy to be sucked up to hillarys left. let the record show the hottest thing in the politics is a socialist from vermont. there are people on the left who know democratic politics much better than i do who thinks he has a real chance to win iowa and new hampshire. could he win the nomination? seems unlikely. if he stays this strong, the risk to hillary is he could pull in other candidates. lou: and o'malley and others must be, as it were, licking

their chops, thinking he may have opened up for them. turn to the republicans and donald trump. i mean, he is getting, lisa, this man is now, he is target number one for the left. they're going after him with everything they've got. aside from the obvious, why? >> well, it's because we've seen this left wing mob mentality. conservatives bemoan about the liberal media and the liberal left, it's because it's true, and we're seeing this right now. and what's going on right now underscores that very point. and what i find ironic, we see new york city leading this charge now potentially, and it's bill de blasio seeking to give out 500,000 id's to illegal immigrants. we see where his viewpoint is on the issue. lou, i heard you say this earlier, whatever happened to free speech, having diverse opinions in this country? lou: you got the answer to that one?

>> that's a very big question. look, i think donald is clearly benefitting from this at the moment. but i don't think he really knows what he is in for because now he is a major hate figure from the left, and they don't stop until they silence and destroy people. and more than anything else, more than a businessman, more than a politician, he's a celebrity, and values celebritidom, and there's a reason you have very, very few outspokenly conservative celebrities, because you usually don't survive in that role. >> i think that's a very good point. i do think at the same time, as i said, in my commentary tonight, i believe trump may be honestly one of the few people in the entire republican party who has the resources, the guts, if you will, the flare, the celebrity, as you said, rich, to actually withstand. this we're going to find out how much donald trump sincerely, honestly at heart wants to be president because of what he has to endure, what do you think, lisa?

>> that's the big question, is he serious? this is a guy who flirted with the presidential run for almost 20 years now, i think that's the big question on everyone's mind. lou: remember in 2008, he said he didn't want to be a republican anymore, he was so disgusted with the system. i think there's a trajectory here for his decision-making, if you will. i know he's been accused of being exploited for his own celebrity and part of that is true, but he knows what he's in for now because he's looking at hundreds of million at risk for a billionaire, that's real money. >> right. and i think he's certainly got a taste for what it actually means to run for president. but it's still to be seen. is he serious about running? we don't know that. we know he's withstanding a lot of heat right now, but is he going to file his financial disclosures. lou: how serious do we think the other candidates are? this isn't a litmus test on seriousness, he's risking hundreds of millions of

dollars, that looks like a guy that is dad gum serious. >> many have pursued politics as a clear, it's unclear with trump. i said a couple weeks ago, it will end up on the celebrity apprentice, well, that's not going to happen! maybe he is in for the duration now. lou: he probably heard you say that. >> exactly. [ laughter ] >> there you go, i ruined his whole tv career. i think immigration is a serious issue. i think the nature of the immigrants coming from mexico is a serious issue, but the way he expressed it was extremely crude and does more to discredit those arguments. lou: yeah. >> and to get people to listen to him. >> the fact of the matter is clear, he loves mexicans but hacked off at mexican government. >> the fact is this is the way that he speaks so, people see that as a positive. lou: you know what? nobody says everybody has to talk the same way. rough and ready also works.

i'm not excusing it. i'm saying that the in fact is a lexicon that is the only standard to which we all must repair. let's leave some room for individuality in what's supposed to be a free country. >> let me finish making my point. lou: i'm waiting i'm waiting! >> i don't disagree with you by that. >> it is a different lexicon. [ laughter ] >> you have to look at unfavorables, republicans don't like him, unfavorables are sky high. lou: he's on his way, lisa, come on, we got the point. >> but -- okay. lou: honestly, did we get the point? >> i agree with lisa probably more than you. lou: wait a minute, you agree with lisa more than you agree with me or do you agree with -- >> the appeal is more than the average politician, he has extremely high negatives and at the end of the day impossible to imagine him as president of the united states.

. lou: on wall street, stocks closed out the shortened trading week lower. the dow down 28 points, the nasdaq off a fraction, the s&p off 4 points volume just under 3 billion, early, early holiday celebration. joining me the past the holland balance fund. michael holland, good to have you here. down a little on the week, down a lot year to date. where are we? >> with all the bad headlines in the first six months of the year, we've had a pretty good market performance, flat overall for the u.s. stashth. chinese market even after recent fall, up a lot. so the world markets have done okay. you referred to greece earlier in in the program. greece is the leading headline today. markets shrugged that off as well. probably makes sense to do so. things are okay around the world. that's why. lou: okay is the new normal it

seems, and then you start to examine what is okay and okay turns out to be another 400,000 people walking out of labor force. 5.3%, unemployment rate, the result, we don't seem to have traction here, there is no ignition. there's a lot of fuel seems in the air, but nothing is sparking anything that's interesting or encouraging frankly. >> you do a lot of stuff you're away from the markets and economics that has to do with the answer to that, that is lack of leadership globally. one of the reasons -- don't laugh at this, where there is leadership is china. they've got a little problem on the heat the portion of the market, they're doing something about it. with respect to the u.s. and europe, europe has a little more leadership than we, do not a lot more. lou: mike, as you know, even the chinese right now are having to stimulate an economy that is oversupplied, it is

still overmanned, if you will. the labor force is a disaster and it will continue for sometime, behind every story, once you penetrate the surface you're looking at real large systemic issues nearly everywhere in the world. >> so when you say why are we okay if the market's not doing very much, it's because if things get better and better includes that six months from now we're not talking about greece, and i don't think we will. we're not talking about china's hot market and all the crummy stuff you're talking about. they've done a little better. the u.s., if we show growth in the labor force with wages, which i think we're getting slack taken out of the labor force right now. in a very bad way as you just described it, we could see things getting better. companies have had their estimate of forecasts from wall street way driven down by the pessimism. we're probably going to outperform that.

lou: let me do something at the very superficial straightforward level. >> you got the right guy. lou: i'm the right guy to answer questions, that's why you and i are both here, bucko. where did you see markets the remainder of the year? >> up. greek people are not stupid enough to ask for more misery. i loved the winston churchill sharing of misery. for them to vote no is to ask for a lot more misery and a lot more sharing. the u.s. markets won't have anything to do with greece, greece is -- lou: our financials are immune. >> we are in good shape with respect to that and so are the world markets. so are people who stay away from all of that kind of problem. lou: i'm going to wait a week to ask you about puerto rico, illinois. >> we're okay. we're okay with each. lou: okay, i'm going to quit while i'm ahead. >> we're going to be okay. lou: great to see you. michael holland. an italian daredevil
