tv   Lou Dobbs Tonight  FOX Business  July 29, 2015 11:00pm-12:01am EDT

11:00 pm
take it with you. >> do you have a story you would like to share with us? we'd love to hear it. send me an e-mail or go to our web catch us if you can. dvr the show. the man himself lou dobbs is next.. lou: good evening, everybody, i'm lou dobbs. already substantial congressional opposition to the president's iranian nuclear deal is rising by the day. recognizing the strength of the strengthening opposition, the obama administration dispatched three cabinet secretaries and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff to defend the president's viewpoints in what appears to be, to many, a reckless deal reached through shoddy negotiation by reckless presidential representatives, far too eager for a deal, any deal. and lawmakers are increasingly vocal in their opposition. expressing their anger and frustration at a deal that
11:01 pm
critics say not only allows iran to cheat, but invites them to do so. laying out a clear, bright path for iran to develop an atomic weapon, while lavishing iran with tens of billions of dollars to buy weapons and to fund terrorism. we take up what is to happen next with this deal, which should be a treaty with republican congressman lee zelden. also tonight, the once inevitable hillary clinton continues her precipitous fall in the polls. the democratic front-runner facing negative headlines in recent days from benghazi to e-mail scandal to falling approval ratings. how does she top all of that? how about a hair cut that costs more than the average american worker makes in a week? also tonight robert kraft, owner of the new england patriots, one of the nfl's most respected and powerful owners firing back at nfl, and make his contempt for roger goodell
11:02 pm
absolutely clear. it may well be that goodell's job hangs in the balance. we'll discuss what's next as it becomes clear that goodell's handling of deflategate has actually started a civil war among the barons of professional football. our top story tonight, republican critics blasting the iranian nuclear deal on capitol hill. and the obama administration only adding to its image of incompetence and ineptitude, giving congress and the american people more reasons to worry. listen to the stunning admissions by our secretary of defense ash carter and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff general martin dempsey. >> do you, secretary carter, believe that iran will change its behavior as a result, if this agreement is finalized? and have you seen any indication of that? >> i have not, mr. chairman,
11:03 pm
and speaking just from my own judgment, i don't foresee that or have any reason to foresee that. that is why it's important the agreement be verifiable. >> you said under no circumstances should we relieve pressure on iran on those issues. so was it your military recommendation that we not agree to lifting of those sanctions? >> yes, and i use the phrase as long as possible, and then that was the point at which the negotiation continued. yes, that was my military advice. lou: stunning. president obama's negotiations with iran only part of the rising number of foreign policy challenges that face this administration. fox news correspondent doug mckelway with our report. >> reporter: the afghan government's timing of announcement the taliban leader of mullah omar died two years ago was curious. it came two days before new
11:04 pm
round of peace talks with the taliban. the one eyed omar led the 10-year long uncertainty of the troops. the white house urged the talks to continue not knowing who the real taliban leader is. >> the united states does continue to support an afghan led and afghan owned reconciliation process as the surest way to end violence in the region. >> reporter: marks foreign policy headache for the obama administration which came under fire in a senate hearing. republicans are livid over what they call a side deal in the iran nuclear agreement, allows iran to choose its own soil samples for inspection. >> all i can say is first of all, i personally have not seen the documents. >> which is astounding to be honest with you. absolutely astounding that you have not seen the documents that are about requirement for verification.
11:05 pm
>> reporter: the white house pushed back noting the side deal is a standard classified clause often included in agreements between iaea and individual states. >> there is no side deal, no secret deals between the p5+1 and iran. >> reporter: the administration is saying the deal is a good one. secretary of state john kerry is headed there next week. defense secretary ash carter just returned. he tried to convince senators the nuclear genie will be kept in the bottle. >> overwhelming array of forces into the region. married with sophisticated munitions that put no target out of reach. >> reporter: and lou, late today, the president tried to bolster support for the iran nuclear deal by inviting house democrats to the east room for an informal tete-a-tete. nancy pelosi, the house minority leader described the meeting as very productive. house republicans will need 43 democratic defections in order
11:06 pm
to override that threatened presidential veto. lou, back to you. lou: doug, thank you very much. extraordinary. the negotiators not reading the documents that they're inviting our congress to approve in which the united nations has already approved. doug, terrific reporting. thank you. the senate armed services committee today not the only hearing on capitol hill featuring blistering attacks on the administration. republicans on the senate oversight subcommittee going after irs commissioner john koskinen over what they see as arrogant and indifferent attitude on the part of the leaders of the irs to ward the irs targeting scandal. fox news chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel with our report. >> reporter: with conservatives concerned about accountability, texas senator and presidential candidate ted cruz convened a subcommittee hearing grilling
11:07 pm
commissioner john koskinen. >> in the 806 days that have followed, has anyone been indicted? >> no. >> has anyone been fired? >> there have been, at this point, the five major people starting with the commission or down through the director of exempt organizations are all new. everyone else is gone. >> reporter: blamed the targeting on a broken campaign finance system. >> rather than trying to score political points by distorting a set of unfortunate but basically honest mistakes by civil servants, we should instead ask ourselves the question how is it we have all allowed such an irrational system continue to exist? >> reporter: koskinen took over the irs seven months after the scandal broke. this is first visit to capitol hill since house oversight republicans sent the 30-page letter to president obama monday demanding he be removed from job as commissioner. lawmakers say koskinen had a duty to preserve and produce
11:08 pm
approximately 24,000 e-mails from former official lois lerner and note the irs failed to do so. today cruz made this reference to watergate. >> we've destroyed the hard drives. richard nixon's ghost. must have been smiling at that protostation. >> reporter: cruz drew this conclusion after lerner refused to answer questions on capitol hill. >> a senior official of the irs twice saying if i answer your questions, i could end up in the slammer. >> reporter: continued support for koskinen. >> decades of experience turning around public and private institutions continue to make him the right person to lead this agency. >> reporter: senators also heard from representatives of conservative groups who had their lives turned upside down by extra scrutiny from the irs. patience is wearing thin with u.s. district court judge emmitt sullivan, threatening to
11:09 pm
hold koskinen and attorneys in contempt of court for failing to produce status report and lois lerner e-mails. lou? lou: mike, thank you so much. breaking news on the deflategate scandal. we have just learned that the nfl players' association, on behalf of tom brady, have gone to federal court in minnesota seeking to overturn his four-game suspension by roger goodell. attorneys are asking the u.s. district court judge, to vacate the suspension or at least put it on hold until the case can be heard. earlier today, new england patriots owner robert kraft essentially declared war on the nfl over the four-game suspension. kraft called commissioner goodell's decision unfathomable and blasted the league. >> there are those in the league office who are more determined to prove that they were right, rather than admit any culpability of their own or
11:10 pm
take any responsibility to the initiation of a process in ensuing investigation that was flawed. i've come to the conclusion that this was never about doing what was fair and just. back in may, i had to make a difficult decision that i now regret. lou: kraft referring to his decision to accept a one million-dollar fine and the loss of a first-round draft pic in 2016. we'll have a lot more on tom brady talking with professor robert bowland and sportscaster jim gray among our guests. coming right back. stay with us. much more ahead. president obama does what he always does when he doesn't get what he wants. congress may consider itself properly scolded for failure to rubber stamp his iranian nuclear deal. >> we've been disappointed thus far with their inaction.
11:11 pm
lou: we take up next steps with leading republican congressman lee zeldin. and a florida man reeling
11:12 pm
11:13 pm
11:14 pm
. lou: breaking news now, a u.s. official telling the associated
11:15 pm
press tonight that aircraft debris just found could be from malaysia airlines flight 370. the debris found on a french island in the indian ocean from a boeing 777, that is the same model aircraft as malaysia airlines plane that disappeared last year. this wing part as you see there, about nine feet long, three feet wide, appears to be in the water for a long, long time. the island it was found on is about 4,000 miles from what was considered to be the most likely mh370 crash site. no trace has been found of the aircraft which disappeared in march last year carrying 239 passengers and crew in what is one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history. the obama administration continues its hard sell on its nuclear deal with iran.
11:16 pm
dispatching secretary carter, joint chiefs chair general martin dempsey to the hill today. yesterday secretary of state kerry in the hot seat, grilled by house lawmakers on why this deal, which the administration obviously thinks is important, is not being considered a treaty? >> i spent quite a few years trying to get a lot of treaties through the united states senate, and frankly it's become physically impossible. that's why. because you can't pass a treaty anymore. lou: i think what he meant is he can't pass a treaty anymore. dumbfounding. we're not going to bother with tradition, values, the constitution or the proper roles of our three branches of government. it's just too darn hard for these fellas. the last major treaty by the way to pass the senate was the start arms reduction treaty in december of 2010. since then, the senate has passed six treaties with four
11:17 pm
passing just last year. my, my, my! i wonder who does the counting for these -- oops, these are the same people who negotiated without knowing what was in the negotiating documents. my next guest questioned kerry why the iranian deal is not handled as a treaty. he said it was played like a four string quartet. joining us lee zeldin. congressman. i can't say that it was the most jaw dropping thing anyone in this administration said. but it was among them. it's just too darn hard for them to bother with the little things like the constitution and common sense? >> it was pretty shocking, actually. he was getting asked for a legal reasoning. and what secretary kerry provide was a political excuse. the reason why the iran nuclear
11:18 pm
deal wouldn't pass the senate is it's fundamentally flawed and they can't get two-thirds of the senate to approve it, on the merits that a treaty wouldn't pass the senate like this, not on the politics. lou: yeah, i think anyone in this country understands why this should be a treaty. the importance of it, the sweep of it, the historic nature of it. now, the next question is why in the world would anyone in that congress, in that senate, not be outraged that this president went to the united nations first and didn't even so much as tip a hat on its way past capitol hill? >> absolutely. every member of congress. it does not matter your political party, should be prioritizing national security over party loyalty. we have members, congressional democrats, who know they're going to vote against the deal, who are saying publicly to the press they're taking time to review the deal to have questions answered even though
11:19 pm
they know they're going vote against the deal choosing party loyalty first. they should be outraged on behalf of the american public because we're letting the international community decide before the american public gets a chance to review, weigh in. lou: i'm stunned what secretary kerry said in response to your question. as i think about the fact that the side letter deals now the white house denies they're side letter deals with the iaea and iran, but they, at the same time, say no one knows what's in these agreements that don't exist. i mean there doesn't seem to be much one can believe about anything that this administration or its representatives or its officials say. what is your thought about their credibility on all of this? >> well, secretary kerry, on the credibility point, secretary kerry yesterday at the foreign affairs committee said there's no secret deal. later acknowledging that there is a deal.
11:20 pm
the deal is secret. he hasn't reviewed it knowing the administration has, he's only been briefed on it. later saying that congress will be briefed on it at some unknown point in the future, yet they're rung the 60-day clock. now the clip that you played from the white house press person, he referenced there's no secret deal, and right there the the end he says between the p5+1 and iran. he didn't say between the iaea and iran because there is a secret deal. >> the level of integrity right now on the part of this executive is republican loyal opposition, many of your colleagues, certainly not to you, because i don't just understand why the interest of the nation, the american people isn't represented in bald faced lying, is it not? >> they should be insulted by it. especially if it's their own
11:21 pm
political party. kudos to congresswoman grace mang. she is the first house democrat to come out against the deal. that takes real chutzpah. kudos to her, and all the other democrats should follow suit. senator schumer, there are leaders in the house as well, and not only coming out against the deal at end, but coming out against it now and encouraging colleagues to come against, it every single moment that passes more, comes out to light what's flawed about the deal wasn't part of the agreement. lou: if anybody needs any more than what has been revealed through questioning like yours, the statements of kerry, the energy secretary, the list goes on, i mean, i don't know what would be required. their threshold for objection is quite high. congressman, great to have you with us, thanks so much. >> thank you. lou: congressman lee zeldin. vote in tonight's poll, the question is --
11:22 pm
do you believe that they have that power? that will, and will they? cast your vote at loudobbs.com. a southwest florida boat captain, he was, well, reeling in a massive catch but not without a fight. boat captain ben chancy decided he would catch this goliath grouper off the coast of stewart, florida on his paddleboard, leaving his boat behind. he was pulled off the board as he reeled in the gigantic catch, but he did it. a seven-foot-long grouper, living up to its name, goliath, weighing in at 400 pounds. good night! that's something to brag about right there. up next, if you thought some of the nfl's weak case against tom brady or a sham case? a man who had seconds to

. lou: if you love politics, if you love business and the science of business and politics, well, you can't help but be fascinated by deflategate. a few thoughts on the mad cap addicts of the managers atop a $10 billion visit called the nfl. management is more than mad cap, they are truly frantic and have thrown reason to the wind and are all it seems about farce. what other business would spend precious executive time trying to entrap one of its top producers rather than guiding and counseling them to be certain to meet long held but not always punk tilliously respected rules about how full or light a ball may be? they create a pathetcally orchestrated and onesided
11:28 pm
soviet-like show investigation, of the legendary tom brady whose name is inextricable from the nfl shield. today after the mindless, feckless and amateurist management of the nfl decided to show managers and leaders of every business no matter how large or small, prosperous or struggling out to diminish the administration which they're in charge. the strongest words coming from patriots owner robert kraft today who with dignity and power and sincerity defended tom brady as a man of great integrity and bemoaned what has become of the league he worked so hard to help build. >> the decision handed down by the league yesterday is unfathomable to me. i've come to the conclusion that this was never about doing what was fair and just. back in may, i had to make a difficult decision that i now regret.
11:29 pm
i was wrong to put my faith in the league. lou: personally, i believe he was right to put his faith in the league, but he was extraordinarily wrong about the man in whom he placed so much faith to run the league. our quotation of the evening. this one from author joseph heller who said in catch-22, quote -- i won't say who i think that most applies to. i'm trying to be a better person. we're coming right back. the highly respected owner of the new england patriots has had a belly full of roger goodell. >> i was wrong to put my faith in the league. personally, this is very sad and disappointing to me. lou: so just how much trouble is roger goodell really in?

11:34 pm
the mainstream liberal media wrapping up attacks against presidential front-runner donald trump. polls showing trump leading nationally and in key primary states. and tom brady and new england patriots and robert kraft, the patriots organization declaring war on the nfl which fired the first shot. kraft said he was wrong to put his faith in the league. brady insists he did nothing long. brady said he replaced his broken cell with a new one after attorneys told the nfl the device would not be examined. he wrote on his facebook page, quote -- and as the nfl players' association on behalf of brady files appeal in a minnesota federal court today, it's worth looking at the league's recent losing streak. goodell's nfl defeated in a number of recent nfl cases. ray rice, adrian peterson, greg

hardy, all cases successfully challenged on appeal in court. joining us is bob boland, principal of boland sports practice. jim gray, sportscaster, fox news sports analyst. jim, good to have you with us. this must be particularly fascinating and your emotions i can't imagine because you're close to so many of the principals here. what is your reaction to robert kraft today basically saying the hell with you, mr. goodell? >> well, i guess he's fed up with the process. i think that he felt as he stated today by taking and accepting what he did not want to accept but by doing it back in may that it would make the path easier to exonerate tom brady, didn't work out that way. very close to the commissioner. involved in a number of instances high-level deals. network television among many other committees he sits on and
11:36 pm
a powerful guy and a powerful ally who came out very strong for commissioner goodell in the past. so i think he's fed up with what has gone on, and he has had a lot of trouble recently with fan base for what they see as capitulating in boston and giving in and taking the penalty and not standing by tom brady who, after all, if it's not for tom brady, they don't have four championships and coach belichick is not considered the greatest coach ever and bob kraft doesn't have a two or three billion dollar franchise. tom brady is the reason why the engine runs. tough day for the patriots. tough day for the nfl league office and tom brady is going fight back. >> you know, you come to this with a lot of varying experiences and knowledge bases. but i want to turn first to just as you look at sports, what kind of idiots would go after the top producer in your league, one of them, a brand
11:37 pm
that is as recognizable as the shield itself, and inextricable from what i said in the commentary. this looks like management gone mad in any other business. >> the one tragic flaw that roger goodell has is to investigate everything and prosecute everything which is odd, he didn't go to law school. the only one of the four big commissioners who isn't. lou: that may be changed soon. looks like they need a full-time lawyer in that seat. >> he's put a lot of the credibility of his office into a very narrow basket where he has to prevail in court. and that isn't necessarily assured, given the losing streak and the type of hearings he's been going after in overstepping and overinvestigating. lou: yeah, you know, jim, as we look at this, and you come at it from the sport, the game itself, as a terrific broadcaster. but as a fan, i have to say
11:38 pm
what would you expect if you believe, if you love business and if you love leadership itself, the science of, it how could you not say back in january to the colts as well as to the patriots, look, these are the rules. we're here to make sure they're followed and damn sure they're followed. no discussion, no one has to know about it. that's a conversation between the referees, the coaches, why not that approach? >> it should be easy, and the process is terribly flawed. that's what brady is going to fight. when you go into a world championship boxing fight. they go into the locker room and the other guy says you're hitting below the belt. don't hit below the belt, i'm going to penalize you. the other guy says i think there is something in his gloves. you don't show up where the nfl shows up on friday they think there is something wrong with the footballs and jeopardize the integrity of the game, the
11:39 pm
afc championship game by not telling the other team, these balls better be right, if there's a problem we're coming after you. you don't do it at half time. you don't throw it away and resolve it before it happens. they didn't have a baseline of america the balls. this is by far and away the stupidest, the dumbest and the most idiotic thing that the national football league engaged in. they have never, ever looked at the footballs and to start doing this at the afc championship game instead of getting it right before it starts, it's self-inflicted. makes zero sense. lou: goodell's job in jeopardy now? >> he enjoys the support and is the shield for all the other owners. they don't want to -- they don't want the press and the media digging deep jeer they're going to dig. he has been, as jim put it eloquently, he has been so stupid that he has fans that
11:40 pm
hates patriots saying what in the hell are you doing to the became? >> he's going to need to prevail or find a settlement that finds some phase out of it. he's started a feud among the owners that is going to be hard to settle. lou: a civil war, jim? >> i don't think so. rodger goodell has made the national football league a tremendous amount of money. here's the problem, the problem is the fans are antagonized and don't know what they can do, and the players do not trust the national football league or its leader at this time, and it's going to be very hard to retrieve that. the wound is so deep. roger goodell is not in jeopardy of losing his job. he has made this a business that's succeeding and continues to rise and the revenues are way up. massive failure on domestic violence. i believe he errored terribly on this, but his job is not in jeopardy at all. lou: bob, thanks for being here. jim, thank you, appreciate it. incredible video out of

maine capturing the moment a split-second decision saved a young man's life. watch this. this is incredible. the man pumping gasoline when an suv skidded out of control, barrelled into his car. maine state police said that close call created when the suv driver blew through a stop sign, clipped a vehicle and lost control of the suv. fortunately the man at the gas station quickly stepped back and was uninjured. up next, good news for republican candidates. in danger of being disqualified from the first debate, fox news solved your problem. if you're a cyclist debating buying a helmet camera. you mind find this persuasive. you mind find this persuasive. coming right back.

[ laughter ] >> you know what? did you say dancing bear? >> i did. lou: tune in tomorrow! we'll have a dancing bear, partner. [ laughter ] >> look, donald hasn't seen the hard knox of politics yet, and so if people are thinking he's going to last, we have to wait until the contact sport of politics really gets under way. lou: right, and judy, hillary clinton right now is imploding. this is a disaster.

and o'malley is farcical in his irrelevance and sanders is a socialist. what are the democrats doing? >> the democrats are quickly, quietly look around for somebody else, anybody else. could it be joe biden? could it be john kerry. lou: there's a spectacular thought. >> she is in trouble, the front-runner, likely to get the nomination, but when the "washington post" attacks her, you know she's in trouble. lou: in trouble is relevant, she still has 60% of the support. let me ask you this, if i may, john. >> actually she doesn't have 60%. she's got 47%, she's under 50% which means the majority of the democrats are saying no. judy's absolutely right, there's a lot of running behind
11:48 pm
the scenes trying to find an alternative. lou: i got the 60, i got the 47 less than 50. >> good. lou: who's her nearest competition? professor. >> probably biden or kerry. lou: probably? you were such an empir sift a few seconds ago. >> i can't tell you between one or the other. [ laughter ] >> i think it will be one of those two guys. lou: as the nominee? >> as the nominee. lou: wow! who will be the republican? >> one of my four or five favorites. i haven't decided yet. lou: incredible! leading republican, zero down on that sight. who's going to prevail among the 16 or 17 folks? >> it's going to depend on the debate. lou: i'm asking you now before the debate. >> i'm interested in the last person i've been looking at. today i was looking at rick
11:49 pm
perry, he was impressive. he's a texan, unique, a populist streak and a great record as a governor. lou: and he has run a great, great state through for the past several years, he's been there, what, two terms. he's a very, very sharp fellow and a good guy. i'm not saying it because we're both texans. >> i wasn't being nasty about the glasses. he looks good in them. lou: i'm sure he appreciates hearing that. thanks for being here as well. the book "the quiet man" nothing quiet about john sununu. stocks closed higher, the s&p 15, the nasdaq up 23. a reminder listen to my reports three times a day coast-to-coast on the salem radio network.

in seattle, a cyclist captured the moment that a texting driver smashed into him. the man riding in the bike lane when the suv cut him off and knocked him to the ground. the driver sped off before the cyclist could catch up to him. but, the cyclist had minor injuries, the 18-year-old driver turned himself into police an hour and a half later after the hit-and-run. justice prevailed. and a good conscience. a cyclist in brazil doing the unthinkable when faced with a car parked in his way. this is great. the frustrated biker seen lifting the car by himself moved him out of bike lane by the car's rear bumper. now you know, that's -- admittedly that's a small car and a big man but that's very impressive.
11:51 pm
he momentarily lost his grip and dropped the vehicle but persevered, instantly become a hero to other frustrated cyclists everywhere, and, of course, to the audience and staff of this broadcast. up next, remember when hillary clinton wanted to be a woman of the people, eating at chipotle? remember the dark glasses. television is wonderful. all the images. she's back to her high-brow ways. no chipotle for hillary. red eye's andy levy and joanne nosuchinsky weigh in you on hair gate and more. stay with us. i cannot wait for these can a business have a mind? a subconscious. a knack for predicting the future. reflexes faster than the speed of thought. can a business have a spirit? can a business have a soul? can a business be...alive?
