7:00 pm
p.m. eastern time. if you can't set your dvr, you don't want to miss a moment of "making money." a guy working double, triple time, lou dobbs is next and going to be on again at 11:00 to talk about the republican debate. stick around on fox business. lou: good evening, everybody. i'm lou dobbs. we're two hours from the first primetime 2016 republican presidential debate. a debate so highly anticipated, it could set an all-time ratings record, and indisputably a big reason for the extraordinary interest in tonight's debate in cleveland. is the republican front-runner donald trump, who has consistently held a double-digit lead in polls over his closest rival, former governor jeb bush? tonight we'll break down what the candidates need to do to say, to improve their poll numbers and stand out from the
7:01 pm
crowd of candidates. we'll be talking with chris stirewalt, media mogul steve forbes and citizens united president david bossie. also assessing the performances of the candidates in the earlier debate, who stood out? who pulled back? was there a winner? certainly none of the candidates shied from attacking the front-runner. former governor rick perry didn't hesitate to dismiss donald trump's popularity as part of his celebrity and success, and carly fiorina accusing trump of being a flip-flopper on both abortion and health care, and among the other stories that we'll be covering here tonight. new reports that russia successfully carried out a major cyberattack against the pentagon. suspected russian hackers attacking the pentagon's unclassified e-mail system for the joint chiefs of staff late last month. a system that's used by nearly 4,000 department of defense employees. we'll be taking up russia's

outright aggression and what the obama administration is doing, or can do to stop it. is to this point the obama passivity, the correct response to putin's aggression? our top story tonight without question, the most highly anticipated event of this early 2016 race for the white house. 10 republican presidential candidates are right now getting ready to debate one another before millions of americans in what could be, could be the largest cable television audience ever for a live news event. fox news chief political correspondent carl cameron is in cleveland with our report. >> reporter: front-runner donald trump tweeted this morning, i look forward to tonight's, quote, debate unquote, but look far more forward to make america great again. it can happen. kentucky senator rand paul cast trump as a nonfactor. >> is he going to be here tonight? >> he'll be here tonight. >> i don't think about it that
7:03 pm
much, i think about trying to get my idea issues ands out, i'll try to break through some of the other stuff to present what i'm about. >> reporter: jeb bush began ads on digital facebook firing back on hillary clinton after he was criticized for not responding strongly or quickly enough when she attacked him on planned parenthood two days ago. the ads that when clicked is a fund-raising vehicle for the bush campaign. >> governor scott walker. >> reporter: scott walker started at wisconsin attending the opening of the state fair something he's done every year as governor. >> great to be here, people wonder why you aren't in cleveland? because i love to come to the state fair. >> reporter: and new jersey governor chris christie said bush is the guy to beat. >> governor bush is the guy with the most money. he's the guy with the most famous name. so he's the guy who's the biggest presence on the stage. >> reporter: in a clear indication there may be big immigration fireworks in the 9:00 debate, texas senator ted cruz took on three rivals
7:04 pm
saying, quote, when have you candidates like jeb bush and marco rubio and scott walker who spent years and years advocating for amnesty, how are they going to stand up and disagree with hillary clinton? more battling coming in a couple hours. back to you, lou. lou: carl, thank you very much. candidates in the early debate took on donald trump despite being absent from the stage, both perry and fiorina went after the republican front-runner. >> i've had my issues with donald trump. i talked about donald trump from the standpoint of being an individual who is using his celebrity rather than his conservatism. how can you run for the republican nomination and be for single-payer health care? i ask that with all due respect. >> i don't know, i didn't get a phone call from bill clinton before i jumped in the case. did any of you get a phone call from bill clinton? i didn't, maybe because i didn't give money to the

foundation or donated to his wife's senate campaign. lou: joining us from the site of tonight's debate in the quicken loans arena in downtown cleveland, one of the men responsible for putting this whole evening together. fox news digital politics editor chris stirewalt. chris, good to see you and it looks like a night of fireworks, but what about the 5:00 show? that was pretty impressive. >> it was pretty awesome. i tell you what, carly fiorina was hotter than a $2 pistol. she had answers for everything, poised, she was ready. i cannot say the same about everybody else on the stage. it was not a knockout performance for others. carly fiorina did work and did answer and it was easy to see, it revealed itself as i was sitting in the hall watching, revealed itself that this could very well be the launching pad she needed to get into a higher bracket. lou: chris, as you point out, she has been, i think, as you say, composed, poised.
7:06 pm
she's been very targeted in her messaging, yet she hasn't broken through. you think this is perhaps the day it happened? >> no candidate has suffered more from the trumpnado effect that coming in and turns over the race than carly fiorina has. seriously. she was just starting to get name identification up, she has high positives but low name id. starting to click at the moment that trumpnado wipes out the field and it hurt her. i think tonight is the start of the road back for her. lou: corroborating your view and as our editor, you certainly need no corroboration, but social media and search actually confirming what you're saying as we speak. most searched name from the first debate, very impressive for her. donald trump in absentia but
7:07 pm
looming large over it all, i have to ask you as we anticipate the 9:00 p.m. eastern time debate, how do you debate donald trump, for crying out loud? >> well, i think, if i were giving advice to the campaigns, and i'm not, if i was giving advice to campaigns, i would say don't. don't debate donald trump. you don't know what he's going to do. you can turn yourself into knots, and seen politicians do this, when they labor under the terrible moment when they've got a zinger or something in their head, they've got some little thing that they want to do with another candidate, they gag on it, it doesn't work. what i would do, it's like any big test in life, you are ready or ain't ready, suit up, have a good dinner and grip it and rip it as they say in golf. lou: well, ripping it, governor bush doing exactly, that politico reporting that jeb bush, the former governor called donald trump an expletive, a buffoon, and a clown.
7:08 pm
the expletive begins with an a. >> yes, i know that, one of the longer expletives, yes, quite so. lou: a big word, and it also, i would think puts a target on his back for the trump artillery. what do you think? >> well, it's on. i mean definitely the name of the game with trump is, and have you seen him do this, you know him, you talked to him. you've seen him do, this he says i want to play nice and puts the debate in quotation marks. looking forward to being at your debate, fox. he's going to be there and going to go along, and as long as he's winning and going the way he likes, it will be okay. if that's not the case, he's going chew up the scenery. he's going to go on the attack, you're a dummy, you're a dope, you're stupid, he'll do that. lou: do you think there will be an argument over his conclusions? >> there may be some rebuttal, but can i remind you of one thing? one thing, and everybody
7:09 pm
forgets this. you know how good megyn kelly, bret baier and chris wallace are? lou: yes. >> these candidates, if they think they get on do anything other than play by the rules have another thing coming. lou: they are all the better for the support of chris stirewalt. i have to contact bill clinton contacting donald trump. we have the beginning of a little theory on conspiracy. what do you make of it? >> i don't think you need a conspiracy for this to work. now there is the ross perot parallel when ross perot made it to the home state of bill clinton and you have a bush, clinton, eccentric billionaire, it's telling me this. donald trump ran for president, donald trump ran for president in 2000, i think he wants the gig and believes he can win it. lou: chris stirewalt, as always, we thank you for your views and your time, and
7:10 pm
delighted to talk with you, have a great evening with the debate. i know you will. >> we'll do a good job for you, lou, thanks. i know you will. all the best. chris. coming right back with much more on tonight's debate 9:00 p.m. eastern on the fox news channel. stay with us. much more straight ahead right here. all the republican candidates get to show off their wears tonight. what's the winning strategy? civil discourse or a lot more aggressive approach? and the guy who brought you the amazing jump from space has a new death defying stunt. close in, and much lower to the ground. when a moment spontaneously turns romantic, why pause to take a pill? and why stop what you're doing to find a bathroom? cialis for daily use, is the only daily tablet approved to treat erectile dysfunction so you can be ready anytime the moment is right. plus cialis treats the frustrating urinary symptoms of bph, like needing to go frequently, day or night.

7:14 pm
. lou: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell blasting the president today. at issue, the president's comparison of republicans who oppose his iran nuclear deal to iranian mullas and hard-liners who chant death to america. >> rather than this kind of crass, political rhetoric, we ought to treat this issue with the dignity that it deserves. we're now entering into an agreement which we are basically being asked to trust the biggest funder of terrorism in the world today. and so it's appropriate to have
7:15 pm
some skepticism about a debate of this magnitude. lou: the senate will take up the iranian nuclear deal on september 8, when members return from august recess. republican presidential candidates in this evening's earlier debate voiced vehement opposition toward that deal. >> i will tell you one thing, i would whole lot rather have carly fiorina over there doing our negotiation than john kerry. maybe we would have gotten a deal where we didn't give everything away. but the issue for us is to have a congress that stands up and says not only no but hell no to the money going to a regime that is going to use it for terror. >> when america does not lead, the world is a dangerous and a tragic place. this is a bad deal, obama broke every rule of negotiation. yes, our allies are not perfect, but iran is at the heart of most of the evil that is going on in the middle east through their proxy.
7:16 pm
lou: joining us now forbes media chairman, editor in chief, steve forbes, good to have you here. >> good to be here. lou: you watched the earlier debate, who won? >> carly. lou: really? >> you got a flavor of it just on that sound bite there. she was fluid but also well informed. she clearly, as they say, knew her brief. lou: is this because -- she has done, i think most agree she is a very bright woman. she is a very capable person. is this her breakthrough moment, do you think? was it that strong? >> i think so, i think in the next debate she'll be among the top 10, and i think the thing she has to do now is she's very good at criticizing clinton and others, definitely the way she handled donald trump in that debate is a playbook for the others. just very gentle but powerful for being that way. but now she's got to hone her pro-growth message, not just be critical, not just know a lot of things but come up with
7:17 pm
themes the way reagan did 35 years ago and she'll be a candidate, and formidable. lou: and should be pointed out, she has not only talked her way through a career, she has achieved much, former ceo of hewlett-packard. >> and a compelling life story as well. lou: oh, absolutely. let's turn, if we may, those who did not shower themselves with glory. who among them? >> well, i think senator graham is in this race to make a point, that we've got a horrible mess in the middle east, and those that try to sugar coat it or say there's an easy way around it forget it. lou: is there anyone who thinks it isn't a mess? >> i think in terms of what it's going to require, he says you have to go into syria, back in iraq, and that's not the thing people want to hear, so he knows he's not going to win it but wants to set the template for a serious foreign policy debate. lou: and the other candidates? >> didn't break through.
7:18 pm
rick perry who has an excellent record as governor of texas, impressed over the years with the things he did. he did better than four years ago but didn't hit it the way carly fiorina did it. lou: bobby jindal? >> good. but he again didn't hit it out of the park. on health care, if you had a few more questions on health care where he's a true expert, he would have done better. lou: you know, you pointed out how well fiorina did with donald trump, but we should point out donald trump wasn't on the stage with her. >> she wouldn't have feared him. lou: i'm sure that's the case. but, nonetheless, trump apparently got a phone call from bill clinton, and now there's a conspiracy brewing, conspiracy speculation brewing that there's something nefarious going on in the background as between the clintons and mr. trump, what do you make of it all?
7:19 pm
>> i don't doubt that president clinton gave him a call, hoping that donald would get in it and stir the pot. lou: which he did a few weeks later. >> but i don't think donald trump needed encouragement from bill clinton to do that. he was quite capable of doing that on his own, and i think trump doesn't see himself as a perot finishing third. i think he thinks now he can win the republican nomination and go the third party round. lou: especially as he was so roundly insulted by the rivals of his, who wins tonight in the primetime debate, in your judgment? >> it's not going to be so much a winner as a two or three people that will come through in a way voters say i want to learn more about you, that's what you want to come out from tonight. you're not going to -- people have plenty of time to do the close. you want to be on the people's short list, the top two or three. lou: who will be in that tutorial?
7:20 pm
>> i think walker's got to do it, see if huckabee can play through. all of them have a chance to do it. kasich is going to be punching. christie knows he's got to do it. trump will still be there, obviously, but you're going to have three others who will be seen as the finalists. lou: all right. as always, steve, good to have you here. >> good to be with you. lou: we'll be watching, 9:00 eastern on the fox news channel. steve forbes. be sure to vote in our poll. the question tonight is -- we'd like to hear your thinking on tactics. cast your vote at loudobbs.com. red bull capturing a death defying stunt. watch as a helicopter chases down a thousand horsepower drift car while hurt ling sideways down an airstrip.

. lou: a few thoughts now on the top 10 republicans who are preparing right now for tonight's primetime debate on the fox news channel. we're about an hour and a half from donald trump taking center stage, literally. front runner will be flanked by scott walker and jeb bush, sparks almost certain to fly between trump and the man to his left, former governor jeb bush. after a new report that bush called trump an expletive during a private conversation with a donor, but it didn't stop there. bush also insulted trump further by calling him a buffoon and a clown. this isn't the first time bush insulted the front-runner previously accusing him of preying on people's fears, but bush is hardly alone in spewing invective against the hardly
7:27 pm
delicate trump. so far his rivals have called him, among other things, if you're making a list, here we go, a jackass, a cancer on conservatism, and dumb-dumb. that's one term, two words. compared to a drunk nascar driver, his rise in the polls has been attributed to a temporary loss of sanity. temporary perhaps, but it is persisting, and trump has been accused of not being serious, having no class and one rival insisted trump's remarks alone should disqualify him from being president. as for the unflappable to this point trump, he says he's looking forward to a civil debate tonight. >> i want to be right down the middle. i want to talk about policy. i'm not looking to hurt anybody. i'm not looking to embarrass anybody. if i have to bring up deficiencies, i'll bring up deficiencies but certainly not looking to do that. i'd rather go straight down the middle, but you don't know
7:28 pm
what's going to happen. lou: like the man said, you don't know what's going to happen, and that's part of the fun, isn't it? that alone would seem to insure tonight's debate is the heaviest watched primary debate in history. it should be a hoot. again, 9:00 p.m. eastern on the fox news channel. now the quotation of the evening on debating by frederick nichi of all people. he said -- little helpful thought there for the debaters. we're coming right back with much more on this conversation about debating a nation's future. ten folks on the stage. stay with us. . does trump have an unlikely friend to thank for prompting his run, and is bill clinton learning why you're supposed to be careful what you ask for? and this video has a warning attached.

of this nation. we need a nominee who is going to throw every punch, not pole punches, and someone who cannot stumble before he even gets into the ring. lou: joining us now, david bossie, one of the country's leading conservatives, president of citizens united, and david, fiorina, those are strong words, she was very articulate, i thought very forceful. your opinion of the early debate? >> i really like carly fiorina. she's a special, special person, and i think she's earned her way to the main stage next time. her ability to connect with people, her intelligence came through tonight, and i really think that's going to transcend in the polls in the coming days. lou: it's clear you think she is number one among those early debaters, who else do you see as moving himself ahead in the debate? >> well, let me just say this
7:35 pm
about carly. she came to the iowa freedom summit and the south carolina freedom summit which i hosted recently. she connects with people both in iowa and south carolina. her story is pretty tremendous, i think she's going to move up. i think rick perry did himself a good job as well. he came across as very smart and accomplished governor. i'll be honest with you, you know, rick santorum has wonderful answers and i hope he's around for the long haul as well. the rest of them i just don't know about. lou: well, there's a reason they aren't on the main stage in cleveland at 9:00 tonight. that's the reality of it. >> and lou, just remember, rick santorum, who is not on the main stage tonight, at this time four years ago wouldn't have been on the main stage then either, and he came onto win iowa and win many states and win over 11 million votes. it can still be done, buts a difficult task this year. lou: let me ask you this. the 9:00 debate, donald trump
7:36 pm
will be as i said, center stage, how do you debate him? are you such a fan that you wouldn't think of such a thing? >> well, look, i think donald trump's going to be a tough debater this evening. look, i will says this, he's never debated before, i've been listening to him in the last few days. he's not been somebody who has the experiences of all of the rest of the candidates, so i don't know how he'll do in the give and take of the debate. so i'm going to be watching that very closely. but i think he's prepared. he's the nonpolitician, which is why i think he's connecting to people and speaks directly to the american people's frustration. lou: david, let me ask you this, reports from politico that former governor jeb bush referred to donald trump outright as quote an expletive. how's that for a quote. begins with an a, ends with an e, a buffoon and a clown.
