. lou: good evening, everybody, i'm lou dobbs. pope francis is now in america, launching what is already a controversial visit that's angered many republicans and conservatives, the leader of the world's 1.2 billion catholics hasn't been shy about denouncing capitalism and pushing a leftist agenda including climate change, illegal immigration and the blatant symbolism of visiting the castro brothers in dictatorial cuba before coming to the capital of the free world. we'll talk it up with father jonathan morris. china's president is

visiting america as well, beginning his visit in seattle, washington to meet with technology leaders before heading to washington, d.c., and it is hard to imagine those tech titans successfully striking a proper balance between doing business in china, ending cyberattacks against the united states and human rights in china. all those tech companies desperately want to expand their business in china, and bring in more foreign workers to this country. europe's refugee and illegal immigration crisis is worsening today. and the leaders of the eu may soon lose control. european union officials have approved a plan to relocate some of the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants flooding europe's borders. we'll have an update on the refugee crisis and surprising numbers on illegal immigration here at home. our top story, pope francis begins an historic six day visit to the united states that

will likely have spiritual, diplomatic and political ramifications, in a nod to the importance of the trip, president obama who rarely welcomes dignitaries on the tarmac greeted the pope at andrews air force base. the plane had to circle a few times before landing because the president and his entourage were simply late to meet him. the pope and the president have similar stances on climate change, economic inequality, criminal justice reform and illegal immigration, and whatever differences they might have, those weren't mentioned today. fox news white house correspondent kevin corke with our report. >> reporter: it was a reception fit for a pope. as the leader of the free world welcomed to the united states for the very first time, the leader of the world's 1.1 billion catholics. the president joined by first lady michelle, the vice president and his wife jill and welcoming the pontiff. visit following the holy

father's historic trip to cuba with whom he helped the united states reestablish diplomatic relations, a source of great pride for the vatican and the white house. >> this is an opportunity for two men who have so many values to talk about the efforts that they are taking in their respective and quite different roles to advance the shared values. >> reporter: for all they hope to celebrate, this trip comes against a back drop of strong disagreements between the vatican and the white house particularly the white house position on abortion, same-sex marriage, stem cell research and contraception. the latter of which was a subject of a bitter dispute over religious freedom concerning the health and human services contraception mandate including provisions for abortions. that is part of obamacare. that's a fight engulfing capitol hill as gop lawmakers renewed a threat to defund planned parenthood which not only receives a half billion dollars annually in government funding, it's a major

dispensary of contraceptive services. >> he's the ultimate protector of life in the world, it would be important for him to make broad statements about the sanctity of life. that's what the catholic church is all about. >> reporter: dozens filed suit because of the contraception mandate including catholic university. and then the issue of who will attend the welcoming ceremony? the white house, it has been rumored, has invited an openly gay episcopal priest. >> it's rude and insensitive to use the pope as a political football for what is a very extreme into the progressive agenda. >> reporter: white house officials say with 15,000 people on the south lawn wednesday, there is no way to tell who will be there, including activists and nonactivists alike. however, they say we should be sure to focus on the president's message which they believe the mirror the pope's standing especially on issues

like fighting poverty and combating climate change. lou? . lou: kevin, thank you very much, kevin corke. like the pope's visit, chinese president xi jinping's visit is fraught with issues in some controversy. the united states and china have clashed over china's theft of american intellectual property, cyberattacks and chinese aggression in the south china sea to name just a few. today, the pentagon confirmed that a chinese fighter jet buzzed a u.s. reconnaissance aircraft in the yellow sea last tuesday. fox news chief washington correspondent james rosen with our report. >> reporter: in the nuclear diplomacy with iran, the white house praised china as a partner for peace. >> china voluntarily agreed to reduce purchases of iranian oil to build pressure. >> reporter: while china's territorial disputes with regional u.s. allies and conversion of land in the south china sea in to military bases

are seen as a threat to military power in the pacific. >> there is between addressing the specific issues and trying to make their relationship sound enough so they can also move ahead in other areas where not only the cooperation but tough issues like north korea. >> reporter: most worrisome is china's alleged complicity in cyberattacks such as the theft of 22 million americans's files from the office of personnel management. >> i wouldn't say that there's some formal agreement reached, but do i think that we've had a constructive discussion about what does that framework look like? how can we address the issues? >> the difference between an intrusion and destruction may be a matter of a few key strokes. how do you verify both sides are living up to some kind of confident building measures. >> reporter: the author of the 100 year marathon as the global

superpower says china is ignoring white house warnings on cyber. >> my friends tell me that the level of attack is increasing the number of incidents and the jeopardy that the u.s. system is being put in are increasing. >> reporter: also at issue, the chinese fighter jet that buzzed a u.s. reconnaissance plane in the south sea and china's detention of a houston woman the regime accuses of spying. lou? lou: james rosen. new evidence tonight that russia is preparing to intervene further in syria's civil war and support bashar al-assad. satellite images show russia developing new additional bases north of latakia, a weapons depot and a military facility. until recently, russia's buildup was focused on air base south of latakia where russia sent two dozen combat aircraft,

tanks, air-defense systems, armored personnel carriers and enough housing for,000 russian troops. u.s. officials say the buildup is meant to prop up the assad regime but the white house has done little more than warn ever so gently russia against doing so. >> we've made quite clear that it would be destabilizing and unproductive for russia to continue to use that military firepower to back assad. and the president was quite clear in saying he believed a russian decision to double down on assad's leadership is a losing bet. lou: a losing bet, but over the weekend, secretary of state kerry said the united states will accept a resolution to the syrian war that allows president assad to remain in power for a period before

stepping down. read capitulation. european union ministers agreed on a plan to relocate 120,000 illegal immigrants across europe. that clears the way for eu leaders to address broader strategies in efforts to tackle the crisis tomorrow. but today's decision did not come easy, and four countries voted against the so-called mandatory refugee quotas. hungary, the czech republic, slovakia and romania. finland also abstained. 120,000 is also just a fraction of the nearly half million people who have entered europe so far this year. the immigrant population, legal and illegal, hitting a new high here in the united states. 42.4 million people or about 1 out of 8 u.s. residents is an immigrant.

. lou: breaking news now, fox news has confirmed that general john allen is preparing to step down as the president's hand picked czar to lead the war against the islamic state. sources tell fox the reasons for his departure after one year on the job include considerable frustration with the administration's policies in the middle east and a family illness. the timing of the general's departure couldn't be much worse. last week the head of u.s. central command testified only four or five u.s. trained rebels were still in the fight against the islamic state. that number was later raised to nine and this week, new numbers released by sources saying it

could be as many as 75 u.s. trained rebels in the fight. the senate armed services committee destroyed some credibility today by inviting convicted criminal and disgraced general david petraeus to testify during a hearing on middle east policy. in that hearing general petraeus apologized for sharing classified information with his biographer and mistress and ripped the obama administration's strategy in syria. >> syria today, mr. chairman, is a geopolitical chernobyl, spewing instability and extremism over the region and the rest of the world. like a nuclear disaster, the fallout from the meltdown of syria threatens to be with us for decades. and the longer it is permitted to continue, the more severe the damage will be. lou: joining us tonight john hannah foundation for the defense of democracy, senior counselor, former national security adviser to vice president dick cheney.

good to have you with us, john. first, the buildup in syria which former admiral john kirby refused to call a buildup as recently as two weeks ago, it looks like it is precisely that and not near an end. your thoughts. >> well, i think it's a major geopolitical defeat for the united states, lou. 40 years ago henry kissinger and richard nixon had one of their great triumphs by getting anwar sadat to kick the soviets out of the middle east. they're filling a volume created by six years of absolute weakness and fecklessness by the obama administration. lou: and where is this headed? a president and an administration, defense secretary ash carter saying that they were talking about deconfliction in a 50-minute call with his counterpart in

russia. this is taking the obvious and twisting it into the unrecognizable, for the defense secretary to say that the discussion is under way on the deconfliction, while obviously iran and russia are further bolstering their support of assad while the united states dances blindly on the margin. >> yeah, this is one of the great side gifts of the iran deal, lou, is that the russians and iranians are free to work together in inflict a massive defeat on the united states and the obama administration in syria. this is a play to keep assad in power. we've said he should go, the russians and iranians have said that is never going to happen, and in the meantime, while they keep assad in power, assad's slaughter machine inside of syria killing innocent

civilians with barrel bombs is going to continue to serve as the number one recruiting tool for isis in the islamic state, ensuring what america is doing now is certainly not going to succeed in winning this war against the islamic extremists who are now spewing hundreds of thousands of people onto europe's doorstep. this is a true and historic defeat for the united states, and i hope people the united states congress and in the republican side of the presidential race and even mrs. clinton can come to the realization quick. >> the american people need to come to a realization quickly as well. that is that a president just made a decision about, 200,000 quote, unquote refugees from europe originating whether in pakistan or africa or the middle east about whom we will know nothing, about whom this administration will be saying much about them being from syria.

impact of these unilateral decisions, these fiats and this instance within the power of the president are having major, major affects and many of them deleterious on the united states, are they not? >> well, i think this entire syria situation for four years, people saw this coming. obama told us that we can contain this in syria. we don't need to respond. let this thing simmer inside of syria while people told them this is uncontainable. i think petraeus is right in that extent, it is a nuclear geopolitical chernobyl that is going spread tentacles far and wide, and we are only beginning to see the deleterious ramifications not only on the west but specifically on the united states, when these chickens come home to roost with the islamic radicals with western passports who are eventually going to be coming after us.

and barely made it to andrews air force base to greet the pontiff, but the pope's first stop was havana where he spent quality time with the cuban dictatorship brothers castro and gave mass to the officials who repressed the people for half a century. for whatever his reasons pope francis didn't call for liberty and freedom in cuba only openness, a word that's a little abstract. seemingly if vatican accounts are correct he will join with the american left on the issues of climate change and illegal immigration over the next five days. already is anti-capitalist rhetoric and indifferent to global pain and suffering and call for just distribution borders on anti-americanism. so we'll see. at the outset of the pope's historic visit, chinese president xi jinping has arrived for his first official state visit since he became president in 2013.

no gridlock in the nation's capital because president xi is not kicking up his visit with president obama. he landed in seattle where he's meeting with executives of apple and amazon and cisco and microsoft and other business leaders, a nod to concentrate at economic capitalist power, but the chinese president not the only foreign leader leading with the chief tech chieftains. not even for a moment, choosing to skip a trip to d.c. and instead travel for meetings from new york to silicon valley this weekend, meeting with executives of apple and facebook and google and tesla to name a few. they're going first where the money is and perhaps where the future of technology and business and the globe will be decided. this while capitalism may be avoided in the meetings between the president and the pontiff.

president obama not among the faithful when it comes to free enterprise capitalism and the pontiff is a long and passionate skeptic in point of fact, but washington is an already capitalism free zone anyway. the city a suffocating capital of what was once a superpower. economic and militarily that now in the minds of so many world leaders and many few americans is in decline. this week won't likely reverse those fatalistic views, nor was it ever intended to do so by its planners. our quotation of the evening, this one from economist milton friedman.

and engaged in a high-speed chase. both drivers abandoned the vehicles, were not apprehended. inside the vehicles, border agents found 31 rounds of ammunition in addition to the marijuana. the fence and the chase worked. what do you know. a california kayaker capturing video of tense encounter with a hammerhead shark. the kayaker who had a gopro camera mounted on his helmet fishing in santa barbara when the shark started circling him. this is like an episode out of zoo. at one point the shark started to hit the kayak, forcing the noon hit the shark with his ore. the back and forth lasted about 15 minutes before the shark backed down and swam away. that encounter lasted about 14 1/2 minutes longer than i would have thought it would! morris. father jonathan, great to have you with us. you've got to be excited about the pontiff's historic visit? >> i am. lou: and what do you expect to be the result? >> you know, there is a lot of criticism, i think, from certain sectors in the united states, who were understandably concerned that he was coming in and being very critical of the united states and capitalism suggesting somehow that capitalism is bad, it's bad for the poor. lou, let me just read to you. this is on his flight from cuba. this doesn't solve everything, on his flight from cuba, reporters thankfully asked him about some of the reports he was a leftist, that he was a democrat, a liberal and he says this, some people might say something sounded slightly more leftish of me, but that would

be a mistake of interpretation, he says. he said if you want me to pray the creed, which, of course, is an ancient prayer which is a very orthodox prayer of beliefs, i'm willing to do it in front of you. so he's saying, he's saying if you're suggesting that i'm socialist, a communist, which he's been asked about before, he said it's not true. one time, lou, you would appreciate, this he said communists stole the flag of charity from christianity. you don't sound convinced. lou: you know, i don't want to risk too much by misinterpreting what deng of the devil means when he says that. >> no, no, wait what did he say? you're suggesting deng of the devil. lou: is that a pejorative or -- >> no that's terrible! but he didn't say capitalism.

but this is very important, lou, nobody would accuse me of being a liberal, okay? lou: okay. >> for whatever reason. lou: nor me eeshg, father. >> exactly. and you're a committed christian guy. lou: absolutely. >> pope francis did not say that capitalism is the deng of the devil. what he said is unbridled capitalism is the deng of the devil. lou: unbridled. i understand the nuance. i heard him say communism is a system that should be overthrown, that it has been a disaster, that it has sapped the blood of working men and women wherever it has been practiced, and especially in cuba where there is oppression for a half century. >> he wrote a book about cuba. lou: i understand, i get to read in this job as well. >> it wasn't very long ago,

which he criticized the current system. lou: he had an opportunity to embrace the dissidence in cuba to actually hold accountable the brothers castro for their deeds and for what they have done to those wonderful people for a half century. >> i get it, i get it. lou: what i don't get, father, this is again perhaps my interpretation. >> probably not. lou: when he calls for the pontiff a new global political authority to deal with climate change with, whom is he aligning? is he aligning with democrats, republicans, moderates? whom with whom is he aligning? >> start with the cuba thing which i think is important. lou: i was hoping you would start with the other, but we're short on time. >> okay. in cuba, the vatican nuncio called dissidents and had them call to meet with pope francis, right? and they were stopped.

you can't ask a dictator to organize meetings for you with dissidents, it's not practical. okay with, regards to global warming in the united states. lou: there is much more to his holiness's portfolio than dissidents in cuba, but spending as much time there as he, did one might have foreseen such a -- >> he traveled all over cuba. what we've seen in the news is he met with 45 minutes with fidel and raul. he spent four days traveling all over cuba and telling people there is another revolution, a revolution of service rather than ideology. that type of grassroots. i don't know it he's doing in the right way, i have no reason to say that pope francis is doing everything perfectly, i don't know. i have no idea. lou: he got me pretty excited when he was elected pope, but i've got to go. >> 60 years of no success in cuba. lou: no success in cuba.
