pause on the program to protect our safety and our security. welcome to "forbes on fox." let 's go in focus to find out with steve forbes, rich carlguard, elizabeth mcdonald, john tamany and mark. in light of terrorist infiltration, is it time to pause the refugee program here? >> that's a no-brainer. that's why the house passed with democratic support this week a bill to do that. have a pause. have the fbi more involved before letting people in. those are basic me sures. in terms of the refugee crisis we wouldn't have had it if obama had been open to establishing a sanctuary inside syria which he reejected two years ago if it hadn't led to the policies which led to disaster in libya. he's the prime cause. now he tries to throw it on republicans. >> republicans and democrats. a lot of them are going along

>> our comele passion isn't free. it may be a silly point to those who think there are more values involved here. the cost of the middle eastern refugee s is 64,000 dollars over a five-year period. this is from the center for immigration studies. they are against illegal immigration. go ahead. >> it's certainly not free. one way to look at it is it is cheaper than some of the wars. my reaction is i don't want to minimize what happened last week. i think it would be a real tragedy if the american people gave up a lot of freedoms. the political class and response. it would be a response if the u.s. were not the beacon of hope for oppressed people around the world. keeping out refugees is not tantamount to keeping out terrorists. if they want in, they will get in. what makes us a beacon of hope is the fact that we are a democracy. we should pay attention to what people want.

i know polls aren't a scientific way of measuring these things. 11%, only christian refugees and only 28% say keep things the way they are. >> you used the word pause and that's the word. europe has an emergency. we don't have an emergency yet. let's use this time to figure it out. a pause is exactly appropriate. that's why more than 30 governors are pausing this. i must say if you have doubts about president obama's commitment to fighting isis, boy, the last shreds of those went out this week when we saw his cool response. >> we are a re public and the views of the states and the governors who governed those

states are important. at least 30 governors are opposed to this thing. shouldn't states have the right to decide the in flow of refugees into their own environments? >> this should be important, but it's not. look at the big picture. this is part of the president's plan to transform america. he detests what this country has stood for for so many years. whether you look at how he's gutting the military, letting illegal immigrants come into this country. this refugee plan is part of it. he wants to re make the country into his image. this is all part of the same plan. safety be damned. >> certainly what he does detest is a lot of the back and forth that the presidents usually have to go to in order to get what they want. >> that's right. this is why he issues decarries when he can't get it through congress. he wants congress like the old parliament s in the soviet union. be a rubber stamp for what's in china.

that's not the way the country works and his tin ear on this crisis will cost the democrats dearly. everyone wants tighter security. >> not everyone. >> most people do. >> mark, let me ask you a question. are you at least willing to concede that the vet ing process we have is not fool-proof, that individuals, maybe just a handful. >> this bill, there are two big problems. this bill sets up a gauntlet. it will be years before one syrian refugee gets in the country. >> whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. >> the administration doesn't address anything -- >> for the record -- >> anything to do with people -- >> forgive me . >> for the record -- excuse me, mark. for the record, the administration claims it takes two years to vet each refugee. go ahead. >> it's going to lengthen the process considerably. it's going to add an extreme amount of cost. what it will do is essentially

have aren't fool-proof. >> yeah. you have to take this cautious approach. let me re mind mark that a lot of this has to do with people's utter lack of trust for president obama. i urge you to look at what president obama said after the paris shootings and it's night and day. >> coming up next with the paris attacks on our minds and the busy holiday season upon us, is this a time for airport workers to go on strike across america? one union says yes. ♪ i built my business with passion. but i keep it growing by making every dollar count. that's why i have the spark cash card from capital one. i earn unlimited 2% cash back on everything i buy for my studio. ♪ and that unlimited 2% cash back from spark means thousands of dollars each year going back into my business...

strike compromise our safety and economy just at the wrong time. >> certainly going to compromise the economy, david. because people are already skittish about going to airports after what happened in paris. so they are going to be even more so if they think there will be labor problems at the airport. less travel will hurt the economy. also in terms of security. it's tough enough with a large airport. if you have a labor strike there that will make the job even more difficult. >> so, rich, not now, of all times. not now. >> i agree with steve. i support the seiu's right to do this. this is called leverage. it's what businesses do. it's high stakes game. it will either work for them or blow up in their face and destroy the union. >> leverage? at such a high, intense, holiday travel time of year, you know it under cuts sympathy for the unions. you may have said yeah, they deserve better pay. using travellers who are

beleaguered and scared to get better pay is a problem. >> mark, would an airport strike compromise security and our economy? >> no. these aren't security workers. i think this is an easy problem to solve. pay the workers what they want. $15 an hour. it's not a lot of money. >> it's not. for our security's sake. but it is a security threat. look at the security plane that blew up over egypt. a lot of people think service workers planted a bomb on the plane. >> i think this will blow up. can you imagine a bunch of angry passengers crammed into the terminals having to deal with this? with the gratuities they get you already get $15 an hour. >> what do you think, john?

>> it's obnoxious but it is an opportunity. unemployment is still high. this is a way to break the unions and let other people take the jobs. no better time than the president. >> steve, could that happen? i remember the strike and re gan called their bluff and broke the unions. >> i don't think it will happen here. public support for these actions, public support for these minimum wage laws. it will decline. people had enough. they don't want more strife. they want to focus on prosperity and security. >> when you think about the russian plane going down and we don't know what happened. it seems like they had some kind of inside source to help to plant the little bomb on the plane. these are the people we are talking about here. >> yeah. this is a danger. that's why the seiu's strategy the high stakes. it is the strategy to employ. >> e-mac. >> tough to fire them. they work for private contractors. that's the issue. you're right, david. watch dog groups and government

watch dog groups said airport workers aren't vetted. they are a security risk. to have us going on at this time of year when people want to travel at thanksgiving it's bad. >> mark, the seiu has a history of cooperation with the obama administration. they are all friendly ahead of the seiu visited more than any other union leader to the white house. does that play a role here? are they using influence to get what they want? >> i think they are using the influence in a lot of ways. i don't think it's related to terrorism. i don't think we should imply that the russian plane went down because of the seiu or because of union workers in egypt. the fact is that it shows how dangerous the situation is in this world right now. >> perhaps. >> like those people surrounding the plane do have influence in maintaining security. >> that's right. what's behind this isn't the $15 an hour minimum wage. it's to use the $15 an hour to get bigger raises for people
