joined forces to create what i call an unholy alliance, and together, they're attacking viciously their common rival and foe, gop presidential candidate donald trump. trump has been the front-runner of the large broad field of candidates for five months now, and trump appears to be only getting stronger. his support growing. that unholy alliance is mendaciously attacking mr. trump, certainly viciously trying to overturn what is an obvious strong voter preference for mr. trump. watch this -- i can call it nothing else -- this propaganda piece by tom brokaw on last night's nbc news broadcast. >> trump's statement, even in the season of extremes, is a dangerous proposal that overrides history, the law, and the foundation of america itself. during world war ii, law-abiding japanese citizens were herded into remote internment camps while

african-americans whose ancestors came here as slaves retreated as second or third class citizens in uniform and out. >> defeating isis will be long, hard and expensive. perhaps more so now because isis is likely to use donald trump's statements as a recruiting tool. lou: my god, isis would not be attacking us if donald trump had not hurt their feelings. just astounding! and brokaw did not mention carter's deportation of iranians particularly students after iran took americans hostage. and while it's too early to call trump the presumptive republican nominee, he is without a doubt the favorite to win his party's presidential nomination, and that has the left, the right and the national media fit to be tied. unholy alliance is using the politics of personal destruction to try to pervert our political process,

specifically the republican presidential primaries. take a look at this brand-new "fox news poll" out of south carolina just tonight. showing trump comfortably in the lead. 35% support in south carolina. 20 points ahead of his next closest rival, dr. ben carson, and part of the survey was taken after trump proposed barring muslims from entering the united states for a period of time until we could figure out what we're doing and what is going on? and by the way, as you see, mr. trump's numbers didn't fall, they rose and they rose significantly. trump is the candidate most respected and preferred whether in state polls or national polls. he simply stands apart from the field. and his appeal to work a day everyday americans and their families is rising. what is happening in my opinion is historic. one man standing up against the establishment of both political parties, and the politically

correct orthodoxy of the parties and the national media, and they can't stand it. tonight, we explore all of that throughout the broadcast. the politically correct orthodoxies of both parties specifically. also tonight -- a christmas controversy, a cincinnati couple drawing the ire of neighbors, local officials and baptists after they say the zombie nativity scene is an insult to their christian religion. we'll have the story tonight. our top story, new polling showing the full-on assault by what we now call the unholy alliance against trump isn't having the result they desire, and that alliance it appears will have a very hard time overturning the public support of mr. trump, who clearly has a brazen, sometimes offensive style and certainly remarks. trump's plan to temporarily bar muslims from immigration into the country has not weakened his candidacy in one key battleground state. trump's numbers are moving

higher. fox news chief political correspondent carl cameron with our report. >> reporter: in south carolina, the state with the first southern primary in february, the latest "fox news poll" shows donald trump in first place with 35%. ben carson at 15 and a virtual three-way tie for second with ted cruz and marco rubio at 14, the rest of the field is in single digits. half the survey was conducted after donald trump proposed a moratorium on new muslim immigrants and visitors and numbers went up 8 points within the margin of error. with carson struggling over foreign policy and sliding in other polls, ted cruz and marco rubio are locked in a bitter fight. rubio blasted cruz for failing to end double talk on immigration. cruz counterpunched hard today. >> they want to change the subject because marco rubio joined with chuck schumer and barack obama in proposing a massive amnesty plan. >> reporter: a self-ascribed evangelical cruz is banking on

a surge in south carolina and iowa where christian voters make up half the gop vote. trump prefers not to discuss the religion and the bible and has fires burning. >> are you a bigot? >> not at all. probably the least of anybody you've met. >> because? >> because i'm not. >> reporter: other controversies could jeopardize control of congress. a democratic senatorial campaign committee press release today says quote endangered republican senators are in major trouble and identifies five senators facing tough re-election fights peppered with questions about trump's views. marking the end of slavery 150 years ago today, president obama called for an end to bigotry and referenced religious tolerance to pronounced applause. >> remember our freedom is bound up with the freedom of others, regardless of what they look like or where they come from or what their last name is or what faith they practice.

>> reporter: trump's gop rivals feel frustrated and pulled off message by offensive unconstitutional proposals. jeb bush suggests the billionaire is as or more polarizing as the president. >> basically, barack obama, the other version of it, which is to push people down, to divide the country. >> reporter: in the fox poll not only is trump leading the horse race but the most trustworthy. on issues of national security and the economy, he's way ahead of the pack, defying gravity ahead of conventional wisdom, lou. lou: carl cameron reporting. hundreds of black lives matter protesters brought chicago to a standstill demanding mayor rahm emanuel resign. the demonstration coming hours after emanuel apologized for the death last year of a black teenager shot and killed by a white police officer, and asked, the mayor did for time to find himself. mike tobin is in the middle of

all of it and has the report tonight. >> hell no! we won't go! >> reporter: demonstrations grew in size and passion on the streets of chicago despite the efforts of rahm emanuel to calm them. a capitulation to the demands of black leadership in chicago, words hard with a man with a reputation that the democrat built. >> we're also going to begin the healing process, the first step in that journey is my step, and i'm sorry. >> reporter: demonstrators outside council chambers didn't listen. >> he's not going to give us answers or anything that we need. >> reporter: all in response to the release of a police dashcam video which chicago police officer jason van dyke can be seen firing 16 rounds into 17-year-old laquan mcdonald, videotape kept under wraps in charges van dyke delayed for a year. following that more alleged police misconduct, several heads of the police force were fired or resigned and the department of justice launched

an investigation. demonstrators have been on the streets since before thanksgiving demanding the mayor's resignation. his emotional apology as a promise for police accountability, more video cameras, more training of officers and a new culture. >> no citizen is a second class citizen in the city of chicago. [ applause ] >> if my children are treated one way, every child is treated the same way. >> reporter: despite the mayor's emotion, the demonstrators never budged, they demand his resignation and that of the state's attorney anita alvarez, there is no law on the books to unseat a mayor in the city of chicago and emanuel has another three years to re-election. lou: could be a long three years, thank you very much, mike tobin, reporting. on capitol hill defense secretary ash carter joining the growing list of obama administration officials who

are directly contradicting their boss on the islamic state. contradicting directly president obama's assertions that the islamic state threat is, quote, contained. here's secretary carter today being questioned at the senate armed services committee. >> mr. secretary, on the first of december before the house armed services committee, congressman forbes asked general dunford have we currently contained isil? general dunford, we have not contained isil. mr. secretary, do you agree with general dunford? >> i agree with what general dunford said, yes. lou: this was president obama only hours before the november 13 paris terrorist attacks. >> from the start our goal has been first to contain, and we have contained them. they have not gained ground in iraq, and in syria, they'll come in, they'll leave, but you

don't see the systematic march by isil across the terrain. lou: so, we're keeping track. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general dunford, defense secretary carter, and an intelligence report commissioned by the white house itself all directly contradict president obama's assessment of the islamic state. and we're learning more about the muslim terrorist couple who massacred 14 people in san bernardino one week ago tonight. fbi director james comey says the two were radicalized a long time ago. >> they were actually radicalized before they started courting or dating each other online, and online as early as the end of 2013, they were talking to each other about jihad and martyrdom before they were engaged. lou: fox has also learned that the man who bought the rifles

used in the couple's attack enrique marquez has told authorities that farook wanted to carry out an earlier attack with an unnamed individual. farook however reportedly got spooked as he was told, and decided to not go through with his plan. now, here we are a year ago. this is the happy couple as they were entering the united states through immigration and chicago's o'hare couple. there they are. who would ever have imagined that these two would be anything other than what they appear to be? what do they appear to be to you? could you imagine them to become killers, murderers? a man whose co-workers threw a baby shower for him and his wife, and then the couple shot down and killed in cold blood. they didn't issue a second look

thank you, both for being here. walid, let me start with you, we now learn that the islamic state has a new capability, which is very sophisticated, forged passports, encryption, they're becoming very difficult, if not impossible to detect and their communications to be heard by our authorities. >> they are now at a point where they are producing an entire tech generation. individuals who are young, savvy, educated from the region, from the recruits they have on the ground, but also the migrant jihadists from france, europe, and the united states, canada. what's boiling in the levant, isis now is indoctrinating kids between 10 and 13, in a short four to five years, whatever

isis numbers are now, let's say 50,000, they're going to triple it. worse. many of those, one day will be able to apply for visas and come and join others who have already been infiltrating either the migrant or processes and end up in the levant. what i see happening in the levant is extremely worrisome. lou: as you talk about the levant, it includes israel, it includes lebanon. it is a broader area than we normally think of even though when we talk about the islamic state as iraq and syria. there's a lot of discussion, john hannah, whether it should be isis or isil. the fact is the islamic state calls itself the islamic state. we have a president who says they're not islamic at all. we are in the midst to me of extraordinary mind games and word games, when the fact is this president has not moved

one iota toward achieving his goal that he promised the american people 14 months ago he would destroy the islamic state. is it beyond his capability? >> it increasingly looks so, lou. i mean a man who launched us into a war, and it's clear, it's not his highest private to actually complete that war. he's not willing to set aside the rest of his presidency to root out the islamic state out of its strong hold. >> the last thing i want to do, john, the last thing i want to do in any way is intrude upon his presidency with the interest of the american people and the nation. >> he's got lots of things to do, lou. he's got to go climate change conferences before he addresses the nation about the threat of islamic state and terror in our homeland. lou: one of the people who wants his job, walid, is donald trump. he says it's time to, as he put it, ban muslim immigration to this country for a period of time until we can figure out

what's going on. i don't think any of the people who are screaming at the top of their lungs, whether the left, the right or the media thinks for a moment that that is a literal, a literal interpretation would be muslims, but he is calling for a pause on our immigration refugee programs. your response to that suggestion? >> well, my response is half of the world away. this whole debate in america has been triggered by a fear that demonstration is going to bring in hundreds of thousands probably of immigrants mostly from syria. that's why you have all sorts of reactions. the solution is in syria, why we are debating it here? there is an entire region in the northeastern part of syria known as alhafaqaa close to ten square kilometers, has all the infrastructure, water, oil, is defended by kurdish and

christian and sunni arab militia. this is where the migrants should be taken to first. why you want to transfer them half the way away to canada or the united states? lou: let's examine that question that walid poses, john. why would they want to do that? why would this administration have doubled as a percentage of our population, the number of muslims brought into the country in the past six years? >> well, i can tell that you the reason they don't want to do walid's proposal is because they don't want to do anything about syria. this is the president who got us out of wars, he does not want to address wars and he's going to leave us a bleeding wound in the heart of the middle east that is now threatening the stability and integrity of europe, which is the pillar of our american national security and defense policy for the last 70 years. we are watching going down the tubes and now we are seeing we are at great risk of another

9/11-type event in the homeland. he doesn't want to deal with that. lou: some are accusing this president of seeking the islamification of the united states, we're going to leave that question for another time soon. i want to quickly wrap up with your judgment. is it time to pause, temporarily ban, immigration and refugee programs until we can sort out what we're doing, verifyers who entering this country and understand as a nation to assure the safety of the american people, walid? >> well, look, there are two ways to handle this. either you go the big way, not selecting sects and religion but immigration, that is a decision that congress, bipartisan support should consider if they want to do so. lou: by the way, the president, just to be clear, the president of the united states under 8 u.s. code 1182 by proclamation can suspend immigration refugee

programs himself. he doesn't require congress to suspend those programs. to change it under the law, he does require congress. >> that is a decision. there is another way we should have done before is to create an agency that can vet. we have no way -- lou: not another agency, walid, no. >> create the one that we need right now. lou: john hannah, very quickly. >> we got to actually look at these immigration or visa programs, the visa waiver program. lou: would you support a temporary halt until we can organize ourselves? >> i'm not smart enough lou. i doubt i would support a full-fledged halt on all immigration into the united states. it's so controversial, so contrary to our ethos and the way we've operated in the past. lou: i'm going to try to add to the bonus here. if it saved american lives. forget the pr. >> there is a cost to everything, lou, you really got

republicans to renounce donald trump's candidacy writing, quote, for responsible republicans the season of denial must end. a trump presidency would not only fracture american society along ethnic, racial, and now we know religious lines, prestige on the world stage and alienate our most important allies. it is time to say clearly he is an ethma to the republican party and the nation end quote. the "washington post" worked up neglected to mention the unrenounced president obama. whose years of stonewalling by his administration on benghazi, fast and furious, the irs targeting of conservatives to name a few, and denied the oversight of congress and kept truth from the american people. that might have been well added to their calculus of renouncement. and surely, the post will soon call on democrats to renounce

figure out what's going on. your reaction. >> i stopped trying to understand the polls a long time ago, because i have to admit trump's rise and his remaining at the top is baffling to me. lou: why? why? he's had more ideas, more energy, he's working harder than anybody else. what's so tough to figure out about that? and you have frankly half the field are a bunch of dullards? >> obviously getting more earned media than any candidate is getting paid media. lou: john kasich said today he would be at 40% if he got trump's free media, do you agree? >> no. definitely not. [ laughter ] >> it's clear that trump has brought something to the race that no one else has brought and no other presidential candidate in recent memory has brought. so i don't want to blame it all on the media or give all the credit to the media depending how you look at it, but i did think some of the outlandish comments would have put a dent in his support by now and i admit i was wrong.

[ laughter ] >> here we go, right? he's done the thing, comments outlandish, this is what he's done well, this is why we see the numbers continuing to grow despite the comments. he tapped into the thing america is looking for, america understands the severity of the issue, that's the one thing they can get that he's speaking to that. lou: and whatever else, he's not b.s.ing around that. you can argue about that part. >> but the point is he's tapped into i get it, and that is so powerful right now in light of what is going on in america. lou: the "washington post" lachlan, wanting the republicans to renounce the candidacy of their front-runner, and by the way, we both know that the establishment republicans and the democratic leadership would give anything to kill his

candidacy. it's not going to happen, is it? >> well, i think republicans are trying to walk a fine line in terms of distancing themselves from some of the controversial things he's saying, but in the back of their minds is this not so thinly veiled threat of an independent run or third party run on trump's part. lou: it's straight out there. >> i don't think they have as much to lose as they think they do. if trump decides he's going to run as an independent, he's going run as an independent, and nothing any other candidate or member of the republican establishment could say that would dissuade him or affect that decision one way or the other. lou: interesting construction, eboni, lachlan makes it sound like the establishment republicans have no choice but rather to be fair and supportive of his candidacy as the front-runner. >> they're terrified of him, lou. that's the reality of it. lou: the poor darling. >> they don't have an answer for trump.

unfetty rahm emanuel appeared. he's already given them the resignation, forced resignation of the police chief and the superintendent. again i don't know what substantive change in terms of police policy that brings about, but it would satisfy the symbolism to say the protesters heard and having impact. consequence is now they've taken it to the next level. mr. mayor, it's you we're after, not just the superintendent. and we go back to the idea that emanuel helped to hide this video at the time he was up for re-election, lou, and that may have saved him there. lou: and let's point out, the president of the united states, the attorney general of the united states, two of them, and hillary clinton have kept the tension away from the city of chicago despite everything, because rahm emanuel is of them. and now it looks like he's exposed. >> he is, and i think they are in a position where they're having now to begin to kind of

support him to go to hell. we'll see how that works out. juan williams, thank you. >> always, lou. lou: folks are celebrating a zombie christmas in cincinnati. a family built a nativity scene. this is appalling. zombie versions of mary, joseph and baby jesus, the neighbors upset with the nativity. creator of this obscenity jasen dixon insists it's not anti-christian. it would be interesting to see if he had the guts to be anti-muslim so he can maybe take that test next year. the city told him to take it down because he didn't have the right permit. dixon changed the scene to comply with the city but evidently not to the satisfaction to the neighbors who remain upset and understandably so. up next, victoria secret models call it the super bowl of fashion. they feel like they're training for the olympics when they strut their stuff down the runway of the annual fashion show.
