state supporters in the country are rising and trying to establish a base in the eastern city of jalalabad. campbell says that as of right now, the islamic state loyalists don't have the capability to attack the united states or europe but does say they've expressed a desire to do so. joining us tonight, former army vice chief of staff, fox news military analyst general jack keane. general, good to have you with us. the president on one day talks about a shrinking islamic state and the pentagon the next releases a report about a growing, expanding islamic state. what are we to make of this? >> believe the report. the harsh reality and we've spoken about this on fox before, the islamic state has expanded with formalized, documented affiliate relationships with nine countries, and they're expanding into three more, probably within the next 30-60 days. two of the countries are what we're talking about tonight, afghanistan and pakistan. they there are, one, because
11:04 pm
they can, but number two, they've got two strategic reasons. one is they truly want to undermine the al qaeda senior leadership that operates out of pakistan. and secondly, they're going to take advantage what they believe is another u.s. withdrawal, much as they did in iraq, and they see this as huge, strategic opportunity to put them to succeed in that part of the world. lou: the united states retained significant special operations forces in afghanistan. but frankly, the united states is dependent entirely upon the special operations forces to exert the political will of the united states, and we're looking at the possibility, are we not, that those troops could be withdrawn relatively quickly, are we not? >> yeah, the president has not truly committed to a sizable force beyond 2016. he's committed to hold the force until the end of 2016. he holds the cards on that
11:05 pm
decision. and listen, our special operations very close to command in ft. bragg where the delta and others were there, listen, they are marvelous but can't win wars for you. they are considerable multiplier and enabler. and you need intelligence to feed to them so they can act. we pulled a lot of that intelligent out in terms of our guys on the ground. lou: it is almost as though this administration has decided to use our special operations forces in ways for which they were never intended, never a strategy, if we can discern the administration strategy at all, a strategy that has a requisite number of regular forces that have to be deployed in order to seize and hold significant regions of territory. >> no doubt about that. conventional force on the ground win wars supported by airpower and significantly enabled by special operation forces and thankfully, we have the best of all of that.

make a move to change the military momentum against the assad regime. lou: jack, just yesterday, the president is saying we've got to deal with the syrian civil war before we can go after isis. today secretary kerry meeting with sergey lavrov, the foreign minister of russia and vladimir putin, and accepting the terms of the russian president and that is that the so-called syrian people will decide the fate of bashar al-assad, which means bashar al-assad and vladimir putin will decide assad's fate. this is an extraordinary 24 hours in the first u.s. policy as to syria, and the acceptance of the initiative on the part of the russians. >> this is another example of u.s. policy commitment to the belligerent. putin, vladimir putin from russia. he holds all the cards. militarily intervened.
11:08 pm
propped up the assad regime which it was in danger of being encoached upon. he salvaged all of that. sitting at the table and saying these are my terms. assad and the alawite regime will stay. he may trade assad for a better deal and we're backing away from the principle that we always had is that assad and the regime had to change because they have killed and murdered their people, almost 300,000 now and displaced 9 million and we're wiping that slate clean and have done it before with iran and we have done it before with iraq. it's tragic, but it is a pattern of behavior that's so sad to see play out, lou. lou: and, of course, sad indeed. and, if syria's partner along with russia is iran. today the iaea agreed to close the file on iranian development of weapons. this after two icbm missiles

strategist brad blakeman join us next, and we will watch the sparks fly. stay with me. i have asthma... ...one of many pieces in my life. so when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my long-term control medicine, i talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment. once-daily breo prevents asthma symptoms. breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a long-term asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. breo won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. breo opens up airways to help improve breathing for a full 24 hours. breo contains a type of medicine that increases the risk of death from asthma problems and may increase the risk of hospitalization in children and adolescents. breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on a long-term asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop breo and prescribe a different asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. do not take breo more than prescribed. see your doctor if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. ask your doctor if 24-hour breo could be a missing piece for you.

11:55 pm
lou: brad, do you agree? >> i do. i think people will be sniping at cruz, not trump. trump likes the fact that he doesn't get too much air time because he doesn't control the debate. people like to go with a winner. if you are winning at the polls, you can declare you are a winner. lou: whether trump is in the lead or in second or third place, isn't there a who cares sort of nature to this? reminding everyone on tore up and huckabee won iowa in the last two cycles, not mccain or romney. >> trump's vote is not in iowa. lou: why does anybody care? >> writers have to write about something.
11:56 pm
on the great big day coming up when all the delegates are at stake, not too far after new hampshire. lou: brad, iowa, does it matter? would you rather have iowa or new hampshire. >> you want new hampshire but here is why iowa matters. trump has been leading in the in the polls for six months. he makes pronouncements that he's going to win iowa and new hampshire. lou: the people in see you what better listen. >> this is an opportunity for the mainstream media to take trump down. lou: i would have to say to you that the national media looks like a bunch of i'd yotds. they whined, cried crocodile tears and he just goes higher
11:57 pm
because the republicans paying attention to this thing, they just say -- >> they don't want the usual gang. they want somebody they think has guts. lou: do you eye agree, brad? >> i think the media is scared of trump because he takes them on. lou: they have a funny way of showing it. he lives the for their attacks. >> every time they have attack him his numbers go up. lou: let's go to paul ryan. speaker ryan. it looked like they were calling off the dogs today and staying scratch our bellies because we are not going to bite on this brokered convention anymore. we are not even going snarl. >> i think the speaker is in a very difficult situation every day he wakes up. he's got to step right, accept

left, get in the center and step right again. mcconnell, mcconnell it's a different institution in the senate. the house is much more combative. lou: they are acting like a bunch of -- the republican leadership in the senate and house, brad, i don't know if you will a he grow with me, they look like a bunch of hacks for the business round table and chamber of commerce. i don't see what their leadership is making. >> there is a sea change in leadership. the fact that we haven't had a government shutdown is evidence of that. there is regular order being held to each body. we have got to live toy fight another day. obama is done. we need to fight for the next election cycle. you have got obama, give us a chance to govern the way we should govern. >> i admire you to -- for your

loyalty to your party. if they shut down they will lose the next election. lou: i think what we are con cliewfgd is mcconnell and ryan were smart enough not to shut down the government and that's an accomplishment. >> they didn't draw negative attention on themselves is what that means. lou: it looks like they are back off the brokered convention. >> it's senseless to have a brokered convention. lou: those were the folks talk their anti-trump. >> there is a procedure. lou: there is a reason all that >> quite frankly i don't think so. it makes the gop look real bad.
