around hippa privacy laws to tell the f.b.i. someone is unfit to own a firearm. that sounds great on its face, but if you ask questions about what qualifies to be unfit to own a firearm, no one can answer that question. the last thing we want is people with an idea long cal agenda or the white house deciding who is fit to own a firearm. there has been and lot of work on this by the nra and the national shooting sports foundation. they have done work for years encouraging states to put people who have been involuntarily committed to mental institutions to be put on the background check registry. kennedy: when people talk about

gun violence they wrap the suicide numbers in with the homicide numbers and that's very, very misleading in the. >> the president today, the white press secretary josh earnest. bloomberg's every tawn, they repeatedly state 30,000 people in america are victims of gun violence. while any tragedy involving a firearm is a tragedy. the fact is 20,000 of those so-called gun violence occurrences are actually suicides. it's disingenuous for the president to say background checks will solve the problem of suicide. it's an extremely misleading in the thing to say 30,000 people a year are taken by gun violence. the vast majority come from a suicide problem. kennedy: are you going to

in telling stories from a perspective of military special operator? >> my dad was a marine and he served in korea. he was a huge war historian. growing up any time we pulled into a new city we found any memorial museum or monument. ken were did you like that as a kid? >> i had it as a kid. my father would spend a lot of time correcting tour guides pat war museums. so it was embarrassing. sometime around college i realized something had stuck and i didn't hate it and i actually started developing my own passion and interest in what these guys do. and it's been a privilege for me to be able to take what my father started and, you know, make movies about it.

kennedy: sometimes it takes a civilian to tell that story. we don't know what it's like fighting as an army ranger. tell me about the story they highlight from your group of comrades. >> the show turned out where a large portion of the episodes are from the ranger regiment from the ranger community. kennedy: you were an army ranger? >> i have been out of the army a couple years now. kennedy: there was an incredible life-changing experience for you. coming on to the show i did want to tell the story because it is personal. a good friends of mine, my former roommate robert sanchez was killed on a mission. i feel like if i can tell the story and let the country know who this guy was, a very exceptional individual, then i have done right. the cool thing about this

episode, it's not just us in the platoon telling the story. his mom is there sharing her reflection. kennedy: did it unfold differently than you thought hearing these stories? >> i don't think it unfolded differently. what impressed me with what mike and raymond, the producer of the show, retired navy seal. what these guys were able to do in terms of pulling out these intimate honest vulnerable side to tough guys that, you or i would have a completely different experience if we sat down and asked these guys to talk about these personal stories, we wouldn't get very far. what mike was able to do with the honesty and intimacy that these tough guys were able to speak with was very surprising and impressive. reporter: and important to you not politically but personally
