had conducted three tests in, spokesperson saying we condemn any violation of un security resolutions and call on north korea to abide by international obligations and commitments. joining us now the author of nuclear showdown knot korea takes on the world. gordon, first, do we have north korea and second, what does this alleged test mean for the community and capabilities? >> there's a substantial skepticism that they detonated a hydrogen weapon. i'm actually much more concerned about an atomic device. they have a missile, kno8 which the pentagon believes can hit the northern part part of the west coast.

>> nicole: any way to find out whether they have done that? >> well, we have sniffer planes in the air. in 2013 we were not able to determine whether north korea detonated a bomb with a uranium or plutonium core. that surprised us that they were able to disguise that. i'm not so sure what we are able to find. this detonation was about 10 killometers underground. >> lauren: iran was present during another test, were they doing during this time around too? >> we don't know that now but we probably will later on. iranian technicians and scientists have to go through

the beijing airport. a the test north korea has had iranian technicians on site for the detonations and iranians have been in north korea for long-range ballistic test. >> nicole: we've heard so many nations condemning this act today including even china so who now reacts, the un, the united states, the white house, what are is the reaction that follows now? >> well, we are going to tighten sanctions, but the most important thing for us is enforce the sanctions in place. china has a spotty record on that and the other issue is we signed iranian nuclear deal. if iranians actually were in north korea that means that the inspections that we have pursuant to this cooperative framework agreement mean very little, iranians are building bombs with the north koreans in

all probability, thousands of miles away from un inspectors. >> lauren: gordon chang, unbelievable. thanks for welcoming with us. >> nicole: shares in japan and hong kong both down this morning about 1% each, shanghai composite has up arrows, you know that's been selling off in a big way. we are looking at that. u.s. stock index futures. they. >> relatively flat and we got the news on north correspondence -- north korea. s&p futures down 24. joining us now with his take on the market is peter dixon, global economist, you didn't expect this new piece of news, so now what? >> it's another piece of bad

news to start the year as if it didn't have enough. markets have been under pressure for a good time and for gunnedmental reasons. if you look at what's happening to the chinese economy, it doesn't look so great. we have concerns that the authorities are allowing the currency to depreciate further. so but kind of looking for a strength of the u.s. to lead us forward but at the moment that's not being reflected in the markets. >> lauren: investors are looking for safe havens today, are they finding that in gold or japanese yen? >> peter: i think that's going to be the key problem. so yen makes a little bit of bounce, not a great place to be. the dollar is a good as place as any at a time like this.

gold, possibly, the safe heaive is being swamped by the collapse in fundamental demand. again, it's probably not a great place to be for anything more than a few days. >> nicole: peter you mentioned the u.s., everybody leads the u.s. to lead the whole world and at the meantime you have the fed raise rates. do you think they're going to continue to raise rates with all of the wild cards here? >> i think they probably will. the primary reason is the economy is in reasonable, reasonable shape, pretty good shape actually and interest rates are still set according to emergency settings in 2008-2009. but obviously they are very cautious and if there's indication that the u.s. economy is going to feel the fallout in asia, that prompts a little bit of inactivity.

here to the united states. >> i think those are legitimate fears. we saw from commanders last year that north koreans have the icbm with the capability to hit the united states but not only do that have that it's on a launcher, it can be moved and which means it's harder for us to take out before they launch it. now when we see conducting what at least appears to be a successful nuclear test of a weapon that is a giant step forward for them, when you can find that nuclear war head with the missile, it's certainly that has the potential to be a legitimate threat to the united states. >> nicole: this is frightening to whear what you're saying, a missile can hit the u.s. and can move undetected.

who steps in now, the white house, un? twha are the repercussions for north korea? >> i think they are going to be extremely negative. they must find it important to continue with the nuclear program despite repercussions, the talks are going to end between south korea and north korea. south korea is going to cut off aid, japan is going to cut off any type of aid and any type of reaching out to north koreans that are living in japan and, of course, the united states is likely to increase sanctions that are already in existence. so that means the north koreans made the conscious decision to make thistist, which tells me they're probably thinking of proliferating this to iran for not millions but billions of dollars and also probably testing this weapon that we saw today so that it can be placed in a war head on a missile that has icbm capability and, of course, that means the capability to hit the united states.

>> do we know dr. bechtol if iran was present during the testing? >> that's a very good question. that's something we don't know yet, there's been no information on it. as you probably know, in 2013 the iranians were present, the highest ranking nuclear specialist who overseas their entire enriched uranium program was present at the test, we have seen nothing in present reports or other reports that iranians were present but essential possibly and we may see that in coming days. >> nicole: we talk about hydrogen bomb and atomic bomb, what are we missing here? what else should we be focusing on? >> the last three tests and

people measure hydrogen tests in terms of mega tons. they're making a giant step in nuclear capability, if this is true and of course we have no confirmation of that yet. it's important to know that a nuclear weapon does them no good if they can't place it on a missile. it'll be important for you and me to watch about what the pentagon says about the test, whether they have the caiment to put this powerful weapon on top of a missile in the term of a war head. >> lauren: thank you so much for joining us. >> nicole: he mentioned kilotons to mega tons. let's get you caught up on what we are seeing. all down arrows for nikkei and hang seng. the kospi is also lower. >> lauren: those are the jitters in the nearby region and here
