exchanges last night and a lot of gloves came off for donald trump and ted cruz. blake berman in charleston, south carolina. blake, you're there, what do you think so far? >> blake: last night was phenomena, first off. what a great debate the first one and then once again at 9:00 o'clock. if you had any doubts or any lingering questions about dynamic between donald trump and ted cruz has changed between the last 48-72 hours, last night should have erased any of those lingering questions. those went at it face to face for the first time several issues that they went at it, over being the citizenship issue whether indeed, ted cruz is a natural-born citizen or not. there were moments about new york values. as you probably know, earlier this week one of the attacks was that trump embodies new york values.

the texas senator was asked about what, exactly what he means and donald trump responded with quite possibly his most emotional moment so far of his election cycle. >> there are many wonderful men and women in the state of new york, but everybody understands that the values of new york are socially liberal, progay marriage. >> he insulted a lot of people. new york is a great place, it's got great people, loving people, wonderful people, when world trade center came down, i saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully and humanly than new york. >> blake: well, the fire

returned on trade. he favors a 45% tariff on imported chinese good. trump said that was not the case, not what he told the times editorial board but eventually said he would favor if situations, if circumstances worked out some sort of a tariff on china. that is when marco rubio jumped in and said, essentially that doesn't make economic sense. >> china, we send goods in and we don't tax, they do whatever they want to do. okay. when we do business with china, they tax us, you don't know it. they tax it. i'm totally open to a tariff. they're hold trade thing is tariff. >> china doesn't pay the tariff. buyer. you send a tie or shirt made in china into the united states and american goes to buy it, it gets passed on to the price of the consumer. >> blake: the night ended with a

late-night spat between rubio and cruz over several issues, many people think this is shaping to be a trump-cruz-rubio event from here on out. >> nicole: great stuff there. we enjoyed the debate. blake berman in north charleston, thank you very much. >> blake: thanks. >> lauren: it's not just politics in the market. let's get you caught up on global market action overnight. starting in asia, shanghai composite down 3 and a half percent and now in bare market territory. nikkei down half of 1%. hang seng down one and a half and kospi down 1.1%. >> nicole: much of the same and we are seeing the cac, for example, down more than 1%. the ftse nearly down 1%. >> lauren: that's affecting how we are trading here in the u.s. 232 points for almost one and a half percent and similar percent

age declines. yesterday was the best day of the year for the u.s. stocks. >> nicole: so much of this because of commodities. oil dropped less than $30 for west texas, 29.70. gold up $9 and 20 cents. >> lauren: this is how the dollar is trading against some key currencies around the world. you see strength in euro and yen. >> nicole: right now 2.05% as now everybody forecasting maybe just one rate hike for the year 2016. >> lauren: intel is a stock to watch today. intel made progress in the fourth quarter but not enough to satisfy investors. the company should more chips in the quarter but there are worries about gross margins offsetting demands. they are nearly 5% late yesterday.

down 6% right now in the premarket. intel shares down almost 11% in the last year. >> nicole: let's take a look at the headlines of today's edition of the wall street journal. china higher to buy ge appliance unit for $5.4 billion. the move will allow to expand its business overseas. goldman reaches 5 billion-dollar settlement over mortgageback securities. by land air and now sea, amazon looks to arrange ocean freight. amazon also temporarily dropping the price for subscription service to $73 from 99 bucks just for this weekend. >> lauren: you want to know why it was 73, the 73rd golden globe awards. coming up everybody, more

that was true about eight years ago. i feel u.s. politicians have such a hard time grasping the economic reality of china. right now -- go ahead. >> nicole: when he was talking about the tariffs and we heard different views pertaining the tariffs and trade and work with china, what are your views on that? >> tracy: when he talked about yuan that's where the tariff comment came about. the chinese government is having a hard time keeping from not devaluating so fast. china had $4 trillion in reserve. 2.3trillion. where did all the money go? they spent trying to buy to prop up currency. are you going to get in trade war with japan? are you going to get a trade war with everybody? that doesn't make any sense.

>> lauren: how severe is the slowdown for the average person? >> tracy: the whole thing started with currency even last year when they devalued yuan. >> nicole: i have to interrupt. we saw chinese stocks into bare market territory. that is the amount of debt that china holds here in the u.s. and the worries that are best friend with all the money holding u.s. decides to sell off because they need to money, what do you make of that. >> tracy: with rising u.s. dollar it's going to make china more expensive as well. that spreads to china's corporates. if they default it's going to be a domino effect. the reality is that china-u.s. have a dependent economy. they could come out with policies that benefit both countries, hopefully.

natural-born citizen. cruz came with a ready-made answer and trump responded in part by saying that some of his concerns in case he potentially wants to name cruz as vice presidential running mate. >> my friend said that he would have the lawyers look at it in every which way. there was no issue. there was nothing to the issue. [laughter] >> since september, the constitution hasn't changed. [laughter] >> but the poll numbers have. >> the fact is there's a big question mark on your head and you can't do that to the party, you really can't, you can't do that to the party. you have to have certainty. >> blake: trump was also asked about proposal to temporarily ban muslims from entering into the u.s., he stood by that claim

once against last night while several candidates jumped in and said that's just not feasible. >> is there anything you've heard that makes you want to rethink this position? >> no, no. [laughter] [cheers and applause] >> we have to stop with political correctness, we have to get down to creating a country that's not going to have the kind of problems that we've had. >> i hope you reconsider this because this policy is a policy that makes it impossible to build a coalition necessary to take out isis. >> you can't just ban all muslims. you have to ban a radical jihaddist, you have to ban the people that are trying to hurt us. >> blake: trump was asked about trade position as it relates to china, he said he would be open potentially to a tariff of

importing chinese goods. >> nicole: thank you very much. >> lauren: u.s. stock market futures pointing to a sharply lower open on wall street following losses in asia. china's market a bare market and then you have oil under more pressure sliding below $30 a barrel once again. we check commodities all of the time for you. now we have joe on the telephone for us. good morning, joe, it seems like the relationship is restored, china down, oil down, u.s. stocks down this morning. >> yeah, that seems to be the trend. i think we have some way to continue in europe here we are beginning to enter the bare market territory. so we are in the selloff mode here. what's interesting is we have analysts with some pretty bleak predictions, sell everything, dump everything now, we are into a big period of market correction. there's certain amount of fear here in the european trading.

>> nicole: can that work the other way, if you have the banks saying sell everything? they call it the fear, rise and have the big selloff in order to have the market actually find its bottom? >> i agree. there has to be one final shakeout. the oil is going to continue moving down. i can't see any resolution to oil. i think we are going to see 20 or maybe the teens before we go back up to the 40 levels. while oil is weak, european economy, specially the uk economy weakness pretty quickly. so we are going to see continued weakness. >> lauren: and iran oil might come to the market soon. thank you joe rundle. >> thank you. >> nicole: china to buy ge appliance unit for $5.4 billion, the move will allow higher to
