personal information. meanwhile the usual political anti-trump forces are intensifying attacks with just a few days to go before the next primary elections in utah and arizona. trump leads the polls in arizona and the prospect of trump widening his delegate lead has pushed party elites into a full-blown hand wringing agita if not outright panic. house speaker ryan flew to florida to meet with a group of anti-trump big money donors in palm beach. the meeting wasn't explicitly billed as anti-trump affair but it was. the people giving millions to defeating donald trump. the standard bearer of the defeat trump movement, mitt romney today, officially endorsed not the man he was campaigning for three days ago.

instead, romney announced he'll vote for cruz in tuesday's utah republican caucuses. leading conservatives like former house speaker gingrich, today warning the republican establishment to stop trying to destroy trump and wake up to the fact that trump is good for the party. >> trump is doing more than anyone since ronald reagan to bring in a new generation of voters who are saying, you know, i like what he's saying about american nationalism. i like what he's saying about controlling the border. i like what he's saying about taking on washington. i think, of course, if you're a washington establishment type, all that stuff scares you to death. lou: and after a few days off, the three remaining republican candidates are now back on the campaign trail, and all ted cruz and john kasich can talk about is, of course, the front-runner. >> we're not playing a parlor game. i'm running for president because i have a record of experience that's different

[cheers and applause] . lou: i'll take up the latest political developments with fred barnes, cathy lynn taylor and ambassador john bolton. and for those who keep saying incorrectly donald trump hit ceiling of support, you may be finally correct. if trump's polling numbers continue to rise and rise some more. the newest poll shows him with a staggering level of support in the big upcoming primary state of new york. trump polling 64% support to john kasich's 1%, yes, you heard those numbers right. we'll go through the numbers here tonight and i'll take it up with the first member of congress to endorse trump, new york congressman chris collins. also tonight, china perhaps fearing a trump presidency but certainly sense a weakness in the current white house, goading the united states, u.s.

dollars on anti-trump ads, aiming for clinton herself to stay out of the war of words. but clinton today under fire from rival bernie sanders who slammed her for fund-raising rather than campaigning. sanders holding rallies in the three states that will vote tuesday, utah, idaho and arizona where yesterday he accused sheriff joe arpaio to be un-american for his tough stance on illegal immigration. >> easy for bullies like sheriff arpaio to pick on people who have no power. if i'm elected president, the president of the united states does have the power. watch out, joe! >> sanders sharply criticized because his wife, in a photo-op with sheriff arpaio seeking apparently some publicity with the sheriff. clinton and sanders have sharply criticized the obama

administration on illegal immigration, both have promised to be more lenient in enforcement of immigration laws than president obama. despite the criticism the administration says it's stepping up deportation raids, which are at basically an all-time low, at least for this administration. the deportations primarily aimed at illegal immigrant children who surged across the border in the summer of 2014. of the tens of thousands who crossed only 800 have been deported. illegal immigration and border security a central issue in the 2016 campaign because of donald trump. turning to europe where illegal immigration is tearing the continent apart, the european union today announced a deal with turkey to limit at least some illegal immigration and to remove some illegal immigrants. it is very much unclear as to

how many of those illegal immigrants and refugees will be returned to turkey. according to the agreement, thousands of the illegal immigrants now in greece will be sent back. greece has become the principal gateway for illegal immigration into europe. in return, turkey will be paid at least 3.5 billion dollars. eu promised to restart talks on turkey's membership in the european union which has some concerned this is simply, a fig leaf over what is a fissure in the european union, and bringing with the purpose of bringing turkey back into the good graces of the european union. we'll be talking about that with among others ambassador john bolton here tonight. one of the key suspects involved in the paris terrorist massacre that left 130 people dead has been captured tonight. bringing the four month manhunt to an end. fox news correspondent benjamin hall is in london and has our

report. >> reporter: the largest manhunt in modern european history is over, and salah abdeslam, the eighth terrorist is wound bud alive. he was tracked down in an apartment in molenbeek, police shouted at him to come out with arms up. when he didn't, they shot him in the knee. dramatic footage showed him dragged from the house. salah was the one who get away. soon after the paris attacks he was pictured driving back to brussels, stopped twice by police but let go, and despite a massive manhunt, the trail went dead. some people suggested he had gone back to syria where he fought until 2014, others thought he fled to morocco where his family is. from all along he was under the noses of police seemingly

. lou: republican front-runner donald trump is a man with a ceiling, according to his opponents, but it turns out that ceiling is a little higher than they thought. a new emerson poll out of new york state shows trump with a 54-point lead over senator ted cruz. make that 52, if i can adjust the math a little bit. it was cruz who attacked trump for his new york values at the fox news business network

debate back in january. >> there are many, many wonderful, wonderful working men and women in the state of new york, but everyone understands that the values in new york city are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage, focus around money and the media. lou: well, it appears new yorkers certainly have not forgotten cruz's comments, according to that poll. joining us congressman chris collins, a member of the house energy and commerce committee. he was the first member of congress to endorse donald trump and, of course, the congressman is from new york state. great to have you with us, congressman. >> good to be with you, lou. lou: the numbers on this poll, i think everyone thought new york state would be trump territory, but this is -- this is a blowout. 64%, my goodness. >> well, lou, in new york, especially western new york where i'm from, it's about jobs, the loss of jobs to china and mexico. we believe, we know that donald

trump is as president going to get those jobs back, and we're just tired of america not winning. donald trump is going to make america first, and that's why you're seeing that the groundswell, and this is democrats as well as republicans, i'm not sure whether the poll was just republicans, but i can assure you the working men and women that are registered democrats in western new york are enthusiastic about donald trump. >> you know, an endorsement came down that donald trump didn't get, and you almost wonder if he didn't pay so that mitt romney wouldn't endorse him, because those he's endorsed have not done well. mitt romney came out three days after campaigning with john kasich and three days before the next primary and endorsed senator ted cruz. now we got a lot of screw ball stuff going on among the so-called elites of your party, but i mean this is getting to be a topper.

the coordinated effort by the republican establishment, specifically designed to deny donald trump the nomination. speaker ryan just two months ago claims it was quote ridiculous to even discuss a contested convention, but then yesterday he acknowledged it is now likely. >> there's more likely to become an open convention than we thought before. so we're getting our minds around the idea that this could very well become a reality, and those of us involved in the convention need to respect that. lou: there's a reason that it's more likely and it's because the establishment wants it to be so. the speaker claim he's neutral in the whole process but, of course, that hasn't stopped him from attacking and admonishing donald trump. not so neutral, and i don't know why he claims to be because he knows we all have the video to prove what he said throughout.

in fact, speaker ryan in attending a palm beach conference of major republican donors including paul singer and todd rickets have given millions of dollars to groups and right on cue mitt romney today announced he will vote for, no, ted cruz, in the utah caucuses next week. writing in a facebook post -- notice how he isn't considered republican by mr. romney is to have an open convention at this stage the only way we can reach an open convention is for senator cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible, end quote. this is the bedrock stuff of a fancy establishment strategy, don't you think? this is the level of thinking that they are bringing to their task, and frankly, i think it's inadequate to the task.

capital of europe. they knew where he had gone six months ago. your thoughts. >> well, he obviously had a sanctuary in there, the police didn't have the ability to go in and get him except after careful planning. it's an example of the real problem that europe has. people who have been born and raised in europe who have rejected all of the advantages of a free society to buy this ideology. to deeply serious problem there, exacerbated by massive flow of refugees from north africa and the middle east that's continuing, i think issues we're seeing there we're going to see more here as many of the people work their way to the united states. lou: we're watching angela merkel, she lost three of the districts in her country. her, if you will, home districts in point of fact. she is being rebuked and rebuffed by the germans for just inviting every, every

refugee and immigrant into the country, and now they caught a deal today to, well, to send migrants back, refugees back, illegal immigrants back to turkey, only one cost, $3.5 billion is hardly the trump wall where turkey would be paying. >> fascinating, after listening to the europeans lecture us for decades about immigration policy, they have two problems, one illegal immigrants all over the face of europe, and two floods of illegal immigrants still coming in. the deal with turkey was angela merkel's possible response to try and get turkey to take some of the people back. they didn't get from the middle east to greece and macedonia without turkish assistance or winks and nods. i don't think you're going to see much change because i think it's very hard to get these people sent back once they've made it into europe. some still in camps, those probably will be sent back but not a significant percentage of

those already in. that's why this problem is only going to get worse for europe. lou: and trump's idea about a pause in allowing muslims from countries that are -- that have jihadi influences within them, why is that an idea fought so hard? >> well, the idea that we're going to grant asylum to people who claim to be refugees without checking them out is not only not required of us by international law which our president supposedly is a great devote of. we have affirmative obligation to suggest they be refugees and they're not threats to the united states. all the evidence we have the state department has underwhelmed on this score. they don't know anything. they're uneducated, haven't tenant time. lou: are you talking about the national libbial -- liberal

[laughter] >> let's turn to what is an establishment attack, they have dropped any pretense. they're going after donald trump, and they mean to destroy him, and this stuff with romney, name calling. he didn't even say a nice word about cruz as he endorsed him. a couple of nice words about kasich, didn't say a thing about cruz and attacked trump viciously. >> i'm going to support whoever the nominee of the party is. i hope there's a party left. the concept the nominee has to have a legitimate sense of the party. you can affect the outcome, but if the nominee is somebody other than donald trump or ted cruz, i think the party is at great risk of splitting and delivering the election to hillary clinton. lou: what would you think if donald trump and ted cruz got together and said you know what?

risk, people's family at risk, it goes much further than mr. trump has gone himself. lou: what the heck do you mean by that? are you in any way suggesting that -- i mean, what do you mean by that? >> he's made some very outlandish statements. >> that doesn't rise to the level of threats against people. >> that's what i'm saying here. lou: it seems like it's one of the things that didn't need to be said. >> well, you know, it's the time of great vitriol and great division, i want to make very clear. lou: i don't think there should ever be those kind of equivalenceies. >> i hope there doesn't need to be. >> there might need to be clarification in the country. lou: fred your thoughts. >> this is why we have the secret service guarding the candidates and the fbi investigating here and they're good at this stuff. should find out whether they are serious threats or pranks and the difference is important. it's too bad this is happening. lou: it is too bad, it is also

too bad we're watching a republican establishment trying to play all sorts of specious, and i think, ultimately sinister games here. >> yeah, but lou, they're losing. they are dismayed, downcast, they realize that all this money they've spent on anti-trump ads particularly in florida failed miserably. look, coming up on tuesday, there's arizona, where the primary will probably give trump another 58 delegates or a trunk of delegates in utah. the so-called establishment has been completely lacking. lou: cathy, the reality here too is that this is a tremendous bruising of -- and a bloody beating of donald trump, who will presumably be the nominee. they're doing the democrats's

work for them here, are they not? >> they are, they are. the fact that every headline coming out of the gop is about trump and not clinton is handing her a free pass at a time she absolutely should not have one. they are doing a lot of her work for her, which is unfortunate. and fred is right, the establishment's efforts to undermine trump have not worked in any way. they have yet to settle on a strategy that works. lou: i want to show you both if i may, the numbers i'm sure you are familiar with but to share with our audience as well. trump's so-called unfavorables, the experts are clucking about. let's look at the chart, if we could put that up. these are the "gallup" numbers on net favorable ratings. unfavorables are turning around. the "gallup" tracking poll republicans, net favorable numbers surging 14 percentage points over the last two weeks. ahead of cruz.

it is striking, fred, and all the money and after we've just discussed the beating he's taken, his net favorables are rising. >> you called it bloody, i don't think he shed a drop of blood. these attacks were harmless as it turned out. lou: in the spirit of the thing, i was being hyperbolic! >> i know. [laughter] >> i like your hyperbole, lou, now is the time for trump to be magnanimous. he's going to win the nomination, he's beaten back the establishment, and he needs to expand his base. he's got a very strong 35, 40% of republicans, and that's growing, but he needs to reach out to more voters. lou: he's bringing in independents and democrats. it's the establishment trying to push them away. >> i know we are. but they're failing. lou: the gop is fixated on this.

the percentage of republican voters who have not voted in the primary. that they need to look at what's happening with trump. the number of people voting for him. and exit polls and the fact that he's carrying women, he's carrying latinos in a lot of the states. everything they're saying about him isn't panning out. lou: it's the establishment that has to be pushed away rather than the new members of the party which will broaden the, if you will, the old cliche'd tent that belongs to both parties. fred barnes, cathy lynn taylor, thank you, both. appreciate it. after days of anticipation, a bald eagle emerging. those watching the d.c. eagle cam caught the event live. the eagle's parents called mr. president and first lady could be seen doting over the baby eaglet. a second eaglet expected to hatch this weekend. here we go. magnificent birds, not a bad national symbol.
