a new emerson college poll out of wisconsin shows ted cruz and donald trump running neck-and-neck, cruz a point ahead. cruz with 36% support compared to trump's 35%. and in pennsylvania, there trump leads kasich by three points and trump with a big lead in california, where the newest poll shows him with an 11-point margin over cruz. my first guest tonight says voters are flocking to donald trump because they want a government run by we the people. interesting concept. she's editor in chief of life set, host of the country's most popular radio show, laura ingraham show. also a fox news contributor. great to have you with us. >> good to see you. lou: what do you make of this mad exchange, if you will, started by ted cruz, at least by extension because the anti-trump pact promoted a photo of melania, his wife?

>> i think both sides here are at fault, lou. initially cruz could have come out really strong and said i condemn this, this shouldn't be done. he kind of did after some time, but and i know he says he doesn't control the pac, that's probably the case. an anti-trump pac. what you've seen the vitriol between both cruz and trump over the last several weeks has helped one person. it's helped hillary clinton. i've said for some time now that trump and cruz have to figure out a way to work together. i know all these people out there in washington and new york feel better when they use their hashtag never trump, and some of the trump people feel better when they say ted cruz, forget it, lying ted. the establishment in the republican and the democrat party are clear on one thing, they do not want someone who is

more populist to get into power. they don't want trade deals renegotiated. don't want immigration policy that lets in 1.7 legal immigrants every year. 200,000 or so happen to be from muslim countries. they don't want us to move in any way to deport people who are here legally. they want to die on the hills. if it means hillary clinton has to be president for four years, there are a lot of people in the establishment, lou, who are fine with that. not what they necessarily wanted but if it means stopping donald trump and they're okay with it. lou: it won't be on the hills, it will be the fancier penthouse and condominiums across the country. gloriously revelling in the 1%-hood. >> they're going to have great landscaping, the landscaping will be perfect and the silver will be polished. lou: i love the reference to hill folks, those are my folks. >> exactly. >> the reality that it seems

we're confronting here now is something that is such a new image for all of us, a new vision, a new experience. we haven't seen the likes of donald trump ever, even those of us who have known him for a long time in new york city, or florida, wherever it might be. this is a man who is rewriting every possible chapter of the how do i get to be president book, and you're watching paul ryan. he's playing some sort of role that i don't recognize, i'm not acquainted with it in the literature where he stands as the arbiter of moral conscience. at the same time. he manipulates the levers of political power from capitol hill to soon the gop convention, and then all the while whispers about his own ambitions. we are watching mitt romney show more energy than he did in his entire term as governor of massachusetts or candidate for the president of the united

states in 2012! >> lou, a couple of things, number one, trump has a lot of work to do, right? can't be sending out tweets about women or -- i'd lose the whole lying ted thing, i'd lose all of that. if i were advising donald trump, i would say go right into general election mode. take the fight to the establishment. lou: he did! he pivoted for maybe 15 or 20 minutes. >> i get that. but what he needs to do now, he has his people. he needs to get some of cruz's people on his side. got reassure them he's going to do conservative things, not just talking the conservative game or the populist game, he's going to do it and reassure the establishment folks he's going to be really good for business. he's got to get specific. got to get more people in the movement. i know he's picked up more states. if he doesn't, he will not become president. and the same thing with ted cruz. cruz has got, to at some point, if he doesn't beat him in more states and by significant

margins, cruz has a decision to make. he can either feel like he's morally pure and ideologically pure and stamp his feet and say no way, never trump, never helping him or the two of them can figure something out. people watching say that will never happen. other alliances in history have happened. bad blood has been spilled before between two candidates and they've come together. i think that could happen again. but the egos have got to be checked. the country put first period. that's what has to happen. lou: laura, you're not only one of my very favorite talk show hosts. >> back at you! >> you are certainly among the very brightest, and as i listen to you struggle to bring these two candidates into line and to conform to a shape and a direction that you and i suspect millions of others of americans would like to see. they're defying convention, and you know what else is happening here? they're actually talking about

tax reform, but a lot of people have -- lou: god save us from tax reform. >> lot of people have reacted the same way you have. they love this argument. >> i feel badly for both candidates and their wives. >> they'll survive. lou: but i have to say, the reality is, it seems to me, goes to the fact that the candidates themselves are passionate about what they're talking about. we haven't seen this on the campaign trail in my experience. not since, and then it was only flashes when reagan was running for president in 1980, and that, as i say, only flashes of it. what we're watching now is passionate determination to win, and i got to say, it's great to watch, and i wonder what is going to happen as we move at some point to the nomination process, we find out who's going to win. i presume it will be trump, given his lead, and then ultimately with, again, i

assume hillary clinton. what do you think? >> i think it's all a safe assumption, looks like trump is already looking ahead to having won the nomination, and planning what he wants to do to the extent he plans beyond a single day, in the general election against hillary clinton. he met with conservative groups in washington this week. ones that don't endorse candidates, but ones that will help him broaden the base. and his base of supporters, and once he wins the nomination, assuming he does, he gave a really extraordinary speech to aipac, the pro-israel group using a teleprompter and doesn't like teleprompter and asked people to give him a list of potential conservative supreme court nominees. another outreach to conservative groups. he's moving to enlarge his base

already, and that's what laura ingraham, that's what she was urging him to do. and i think he started it. lou: and it is -- i thought the aipac presentation, people were sort of saying wait a minute, this is terrible, it's going to be a horrible moment for donald trump. he mastered the moment. and i have to say i was thinking as you were talking, there is one other element here about donald trump people are not giving him credit for. he's the only truly amongst the candidates or the rest are career politicians, he's also the only one who isn't a lawyer against presuming that it is hillary, presuming that the final opponent will be ted cruz. he's the only nonlawyer. that's sort of exhilarating to me. >> yeah, well that was one of the things that helped ronald reagan. he wasn't a lawyer either, and look, it shows with cruz that he's not a -- rather with trump that he's not a lawyer.

delegates, a mammoth impossibility. cruz and distant kasich are working with the republican establishment to prevent trump from reaching the magic 1237 number in delegates as they try to set up cruz for the so-called open contested, brokered or really broken convention that many anticipate. kasich is a remarkable nonfactor in this race whose feelings seem to be hurt if anyone reminds him, he is in actuality in fourth place, not third place, in number of delegates. marco rubio, who's no longer in the race, has more delegates than kasich, and it is he who is in third place. frustration is building with kasich's role as obvious spoiler, and with republican elites who are telling the grassroots they'll make all the decisions for everybody at the convention. a new "fox news poll" shows they don't like that idea out there in the grassroots.

rank and file, you know, us mere mortals. poll shows 59% of republicans believe the nominee should be the candidate with the most delegates. even if the candidate doesn't quite reach 1237. of course, that so-called open convention that suddenly the elites are talking about would be first in the hands of the rnc rules committees and don't forget presiding over all of it, speaker paul ryan who says he's mr. neutral. he'll be presiding over the convention as he presumes to be neutral and presumes to criticize the field of coarsened and callous candidates who don't rise to his lofty standards and he's thinking of a particular candidate in particular. nasty stuff, potentially mortal blows to the gop as a result. as the speaker did note, we should be demanding far better, andsa the fox survey shows, almost 60% of republican voters

statement and the thought of restructuring nato to a new purpose? >> just dealing with nato and not with mr. trump, nato's been decisive. it helped win the cold war for us, it was a contributor standing up against the warsaw pact and having an incredible political and military alliance, they've assisted us with iraq, afghanistan and also with libya. you can argue the merits of those to be sure. but here, nato is vital now more than ever because russian aggression and assertiveness and clearly have eyes on the baltic states and europe. without nato russia would roll right in there. nato has challenges, and certainly not putting up enough investment in their own defenses. a lot of the leaders are feckless and it's doubtful whether they would stand up. >> well they're feckless and not only raising defense budgets, they're lowering them, and seems to me that those, and we'll leave the candidates out, but those who say that the

united states is carrying far too much of the burden and strategically is far too forward on initiatives in europe against the aggression of russia without at least commensurate force and urgency on the part of european states. it is a peculiar position to which we find ourselves, is it not? >> yeah, no doubt about it. never would be a nato without american leadership. there wouldn't be a nato without american resources, and this has been true for 60 something years. the thing in front of us which is pretty alarming, isis declared war against europe, the united states, australia and canada, and clearly directly waging war in europe. that is the primary objective and nato is sitting on their hands. they have no plan to destroy isis. no commitment of resources across the united states as part of nato and we don't have plans either. it is staggering that they are not doing anything offensive other than what the police are

lou: students at emory university were traumatized this week. they entered the quad to see this, "trump 2016 written in chalk. the graffiti sparked a campus-wide protest. the president of the university issued a statement saying among outer things, it's important we recognize, rinse to and honor the concerns of these student as well as faculty and staff who may feel similarly, end quote. that's where we begin with co-host of "red eye." andrew levy. can you imagine the little carlings being rattled by such aggression? >> it's awful. i, too be would feel victimized

the kardashians never offend anyone. they are accused of fraud and deceit for not promoting their beauty line. is this the first time the kardashians have been accused of not promoting something enough? >> they are not working for peanuts. these contracts are worth a lot of money and i assume they have to hold up their end of the bargain. when you are branding yourself with so many different product, you lose the luxury factor. you become less valuable. i think it's better if they get rid of this beauty line all together. lou: for those kind of numbers, i could see how people would be encouraged to promote. >> it's not fair to sue the kardashians for failure to promote something. they are notoriously shy. i think it was asking too much of them to change that.
