11:03 pm
>> we had a great night last night in new york. >> reporter: celebrating a new york primary landslide in indiana, donald trump argued now all but impossible for texas senator ted cruz and ohio governor john kasich to win a majority of delegates before the convention. trump carried more than 60% of new york's vote and all but one of the 27 congressional districts. kasich got 25% of new york's statewide vote. won a single congressional district for a total of 4. before flying to florida to work republican national committee members before the july nominating convention in cleveland, he spoke to the "washington post" on facebook live. >> nobody is going to have enough delegates, so we're going to end up at a convention where we're going to have open convention. >> reporter: cruz only got 14% of the vote and blanked in the delegate chase, like kasich, his only hope is to block trump from getting the 1237 delegates for the nomination before and during the convention.
11:04 pm
cruz courted the rnc's 168 members in florida too admitting he can no longer reach a majority of delegates before the convention and argue neither will trump. >> i'm not going to reach 1237 and donald trump is not going to reach 1237. we're going to arrive in cleveland with me having a ton of delegates and donald having a ton of delegates, and at that point it is going to be a battle to see who can earn the support of a majority of the delegates elected by the people. >> reporter: trump has growing momentum. next tuesday, several blue northeastern states vote, pennsylvania, maryland, delaware, connecticut and rhode island and trump leads the polls. all five states proportionately, kasich is hoping to pick up delegates, too. then a string of red states, ana and montana, trump playing to win in indiana and knock cruz back further. >> indiana has lost one in five manufacturing jobs since china

unrelenting attacks may have done irreparable damages to her chances to winning the general election. fox news chief white house correspondent ed henry with our report. >> secretary hillary clinton. >> reporter: while her opponent took the day off, hillary clinton today immediately moved onto the next big battleground of pennsylvania. just hours after delivering a near knockout blow to bernie sanders in new york, and coming as close as she ever has to saying the nomination battle that started last april is over. >> the race for the democratic nomination is in the homestretch and victory is in sight. >> reporter: while sanders went home to vermont to recharge his batteries, aides saying he will not reassess the campaign until after pennsylvania and the other four contests next tuesday, and the candidate himself sought to discredit clinton's big win when he grumbled about new york's closed primary barring sanders friendly voters.
11:07 pm
>> almost 30% of the eligible voters or three million new yorkers were unable to vote because they had registered as independents. >> reporter: sanders underlying frustration is one of many signs of trouble ahead for democrats unifying in the general election. >> we have seen it's not enough to diagnose problems. you have to explain how you'd actually solve the problem! >> reporter: while a clinton aide said to politico that sanders had his butt kicked. adding i hope this convinces bernie to tone it down, if not, bleep him. what peeves clinton is sanders attacks on wall street ties are making it worse than ever. a new nbc poll found clinton has hit a new record. 56% of voters have negative feelings toward her. 32% have a positive view. sanders is showing no signs of backing off the attacks, ahead of the democratic convention in philadelphia in july, top aides

when the president did sit down with the king, the meeting lasted two hours, twice as long as usual. mr. obama spending a light of time reassuring the saudis who are deeply opposed to his deal with iran. it is something the president acknowledged last night on pbs. >> we did have a significant difference on the iran nuclear deal. they exploited it after we explained why this was the best path for us making sure iran did not obtain a nuclear weapon. lou: that's news that the saudis now support that deal. the saudis are threatening financial retaliation if congress passes a bill that would allow the saudi government to be responsible for any role it might have had in the september 11th attacks. the cosponsor of the legislation is john cornyn of texas.
11:10 pm
senator cornyn says the 28 pages of a congressional report that allegedly outline saudi arabia's role should be declassified and made public. >> attitude is let the chips fall where they may. let's bring justice to the victims and the families of the 9/11 families and deter to the extent we can terrorist attacks on our own soil. lou: and the obama administration disagrees with the senator despite having once pledged to be the most transparent and open administration in history. u.s. officials have uncovered a new drug tunnel connecting mexico to california. ventilated with electricity is the third found in march. 16 people have been arrested charged with crimes involving drugs and yes construction of that tunnel.

an important state. and california is the alamo. at the end of the day, he gets enough votes there to get the nomination or he doesn't, and no one else has a chance, he's the only one who has a chance, everyone else stopped them. lou: the turning point in the campaign. they're talking 1400 delegates by the time they get to convention, and that one vote as paul manafort says, they need one ballot. >> that's all they have to do. if it goes to the second ballot, what they did didn't work. they have to. at the same time, you saw in the speech last night even, 7 1/2 minutes long. talked about jobs and the economy. called senator cruz senator cruz, there is a different approach, but a warning to senator cruz, they've been in california for a year, but donald trump's team is putting tens of millions of dollars into television ads for the state. that is new, which means it will be a more controlled, more consistent message that you can't get when you get the free media from rallies.
11:20 pm
>> maybe he'll lose the strategy since he's had free media. >> it will be a combination, i don't think he's going to give up one or another. he's going to add into the messaging. i think that will work in california. lou: ed, you get to call california? >> the conservatives that are left in the republican party which is all that's left have pretty much been for cruz. it's a trench warfare and i'm not predicting any way, shape, or form cruz is going to win california but he may deny -- i'll get close further down the road here, but i am saying next week, add to the trump momentum. after that, i think he's got -- lou: five states next tuesday, interesting to see, and by the way, trump favored in every one of them at this point. >> remember pennsylvania has 52 that are not pledged delegates. lou: 54. >> that's going to be a game all the way to the convention. >> a little bit of the private club of the g.o.p.

. lou: a few thoughts now on the games, some of the games, played by republican leaders and the gop establishment. speaker paul ryan, who i really like, i think he's a really likable fella. he just happens to belong in both camps and unable to control himself. ryan infuriating house republicans with a spending bill that would raise the deficit offending many by reaching deals with president obama before reaching deals with gop house members or letting them know what's going on, and then injecting himself

[ applause ] >> late show appearance not a particularly bright move by the speaker, annoying just about everybody except mr. obama and the democrat. and ryan's appearance certainly didn't help him offset his gravitas deficit. some might think he appeared a drivel silly and the speaker always lacking a sense of proportion, as yesterday he
11:29 pm
rather transparently tried to boost the beleaguered chairman of the rnc, reince priebus invited him to capitol hill to brief house republicans on the delegate process, declaring that priebus has received, well, an extremely favorable warm reception by the house. ryan also adding he is so pleased that someone like priebus is in charge of the rnc making sure the rules are followed. you can only imagine donald trump's delight as he listens to such tripe. all ryan accomplished is to leave everyone shake their heads at his naivete and some might say his boldness and understanding better that speaker ryan wasn't ready in any way for that job he didn't seek but he now holds. meanwhile as counterpart in the senate, majority leader mitch mcconnell trying meekly to walk back his anti-trump remarks saying he spoke as he put it inartfully, they talk like that
11:30 pm
in the senate, you know? when he said he was increasingly optimistic that there will be a second ballot at the convention. he's decided that was probably too much. with all these so-called leaders lacking an obvious tact, constraint, intellect, vision, gravitas, depth and character, it is no wonder that donald trump unsettles them so profoundly and if the gop loses seats in the house or the senate, it will clearly be the fault of their fatuous leaders and many of the threatened seats will survive, in fact, will be on the strong coattails of the true leader who has yet to be welcomed by the week. now our quotation of the evening from p.j. o'rourke who said -- in my opinion, if i may say,

>> i think there are some people who actually would do anything but trump. but the consensus is to leave the rules in place. the rules committee will meet tomorrow from 2:00 to 4:00, i expect no changes on the floor and things will stay as is. but lou you are exactly right, there are some of our colleagues who are adamant that donald trump's not the one. what i don't understand is why they can't see what the rest of us see, that is the huge crowds. americans believing in him and believing in making america great again. i'm not sure what's wrong with that message. lou: frankly, randy, as you and i discussed. i cannot first of all imagine what suddenly has bitten certain members whether it's paul ryan, whether it's reince priebus, members of the rules committee as you suggest, and we'll leave them nameless at this point. what they don't see is five million more folks than are

voting in the republican primaries than the democrats who outnumber them by registration. that's because of the man they're look at on the screen. >> it's impossible to understand. you have a coach that's winning games. he's putting people in the seats. energizing the crowd. he's doing everything that you would ever ask him to do, and yet, you're right. there are those who say let's change the rules mid stream. slow them down, try to stop it, and i think the latest strategy, lou, it really is, is to create a stalemate convention, which is a convention where we don't have a nominee by the end of the week so we reconvene with unbound delegates. i don't believe that's going to happen. i think after new york and after next tuesday, you're going to see the trump train try to pick up speed. lou: that's what i was going to ask you, randy. if it's not clear that the trump train, as it's called, is rolling with greater momentum than ever, i don't know what it
