1,053, that's almost 500 delegates more than second place senator ted cruz. cruz withdrew from the race this afternoon. this afternoon governor john kasich bowed to the same political reality. the chairman declared trump the presumptive nominee of the party and so he is. trump was gracious and had nothing but kind word for the senator from texas. >> ted cruz -- i don't know if he likes me or doesn't like me. but he many one hell of a competitor. he's a tough smart guy. and he has got an amazing future. he's got an amazing future. so i want to congratulate ted. lou: we'll take up trump's road

to the presidency with newt gingrich and pat buchanan. a lot to discuss including sanders' ups it gives his campaign a moral boost but it's noted the land slide he needed to stop hillary. sanders says he's staying in the race. >> i understand that secretary clinton thick this campaign is over, i have got some bad news for her. i think we can pull off one the great political upset in the history of the united states. lou: i'll be taking all of that up with former white house political director under reagan ed rollins. breaking news. the infamous hacker known as

gucifer claims he easily and repeatedly broke into hillary clinton's email server. he said he first broke into sidney blumenthal's aol account in march three years ago and used that as a stepping stone to get to the clinton server. it was through that hack that clinton's use of a personal account, was first revealed to the public. fox news cannot independently confirm his claims. but the process the hacker used to process the server is feasible. he unless a detention center in virginia where he has been held on federal charges related to cyber crime. guccifer with a blockbuster claim that he was able to break

into clinton's email server that was found to have 2,200 emails that contained classified information. returning to presidential politic and donald trump's journey to the republican nominee. trump is officially the last handstanding. cruz dropped out last night after he lost indiana. governor john kasich exited today in ohio. reporter: case up canceled this campaign event this morning. with cruz dropping out louisiana night this wasn't a prize. >> is a suspend my campaign today i have renewed faith, deeper faith, that the lord will show me the way forward and fulfill the purpose of my life. reporter: kasich knew it what

lou: joining me now, pat buchanan, nationally syndicated conservative columnist, best selling author and all around great american, great to have you with us tonight. how do you feel after watching a candidate that you have supportesupport -- throughout ge finish line? >> here is a total outsider who i didn't think when he fir got into it he would do well. but by july i said he will in the finals. there is a real possibility donald trump could be the next president of the united states. lou: i think there is probably no more sure empirical evidence than the number of leading democrats who are already biting

at his ankles and going after him. it appears the democrat are far more afraid. they have donald trump as the nominee. >> they are apprehensive of donald trump. there is an x-factor. he has done well in traditionally democratic states, and more than that, lou, they know they have a candidate who frankly is not a great candidate. hillary rodham clinton and bernie sanders has been chasing her all through these primaries. he beat her last night and i think they realize if the country is looking for change, they are not going to want to vote for hillary rodham clinton, and even if the democratic party they know the country is looking for change. lou: he represents to many people and i'll speak for myself. he's a disruptive force in the

body politic in washington, d.c. that is to be kind, fossilized in ideological terms that defy any way in which to actually move the nation ahead. >> the vote for trump is quite specifically a national repudiation of the beltway establishment of both parties, including the republican party. with the trade deal, their failure to secure the borders and deal with the immigration issue and all the wars they have gotten us involved in, they seem unable to win or end. it is a repudiation of the establishment in d.c. and the whole country. i would even point to bernie's votes in the democratic primaries and caucuses. they are a rejection of washington as well and what's happened to the wages of working people. lou: those are issues you and i

have been focused on for many years. it's exciting to see a candidate who set the agenda, who pushed forward the issues, the no advice who was dismissed by so many at the onset back june 16 of last year. he enters the race, he defined the agenda throughout the entire process. >> he not on defined the agenda. we were told the 17 republicans were the cream of the crop, the greatest field ever put into a primary process. and he defeated them one after another after another. and he did it on issues. he has three aces. the immigration issue, the trade issue, the jobs issue, and the foreign policy issue, america first is number three. i think the country wants this. i think you have seen hillary clinton moving over on a number of these issues.

i think he has the bit in his teeth and i think the democrats are right to be nervous. lou: the republicans are already showing signs of coming together and moving behind trump which of course will be he accepting. >> here is why. trump has a real interest in uniting the party. he want them all behind him. they have an interest in uniting as well. they have both houses of congress. that means you get the supreme court. i was in richard nixon's white house all four years of his first term. he had four supreme court appointments. we could have four supreme court appointments in the first term of the next president. you may be unhappy with cruz, you may not like trump. who do you want picking the next four supreme court justices. lou: we have had that discussion quietly.

he was a tough competitor. i was surprised he left actually. there was no path in my opinion, but i still thought he was going to the end. i just heard he was going to the end. about an hour before i started getting rumors he might be leaving the race, sow i was a little bit surprised. lou: i have to say i wasn't particularly surprised. i hate those people who say i told you so, because i'm just about to become one of them. yet on the 25th of april i tweets these words. cruz and kasich are done. they decided to run in a pack like hyenas. un-american. were you have surprised? >> i thought it was a big mistake. i thought cruz had a very bad

campaign. to a certain extent that was one of them. it looked like they were piling on and doing what trump said they were. sort of violating the rules and i think it backfired on them. lou: i was absolutely, i have to say, i was impressed reince priebus student and took charge of the presumptive nominee declaration. he tweeted it out. and i thought that was a wise move on his part. >> it many trump's party now. at the end of the day he has to help reese. trump put this campaign together faster than anybody put a campaign together. he did it with limited resources.

i give him great credit and he did it with less money than anybody did tonight this race. it's a weak candidate about a strong organization against him. lou: do you think it will take a while to unify the party? >> i'm amazed how quickly it has changed. i think a lot of people didn't expect trump to win, and when they did win so overwhelmingly, here are our choices. we know what she is about. we have trump who is a strong leader and can articulate the message. so my sense is over time trump is going to leave a lot of people who are unhappy today to the promisedland. lou: there is a lot of focus on wisconsin. wisconsin i believe turned out

to be what looked to be cruz's great victory. it turned out his waterloo. it was the last thing they did right and everything from there fell apart. >> it did. the key thing is, i thought cruz had a great campaign team. they won the delegates after the fact in many cases. i don't think he was a great candidate. there was something abou that you just didn't like. trump will not be a great candidate. very articulate and very tough and obviously will get bert as time goes on. he will draw the lines between hillary clinton and him and that will bring people together. let's talk to who seems to be his opponent for the fall. hillary clinton. catherine herridge reporting guccifer the hacker got into her account with 2,200 classified

emails and got there through one of her advisers she had some communication with. >> sidney blumenthal should never have had access to that stuff. but he was one of her confidantes and the fact that he had an aol account. any hacker in the world can get into an aol account. so my sense is as they unravel this thing, this has a long ways from being over. at the end of the day higher she did some things that are improper and many people think illegal. lou: it's going to be some race. what do you make of james comey, the director of the f.b.i. telling us all it would be this month, may, we could expect some action. >> the most important thing about him is he's a man of great integrity. that he himself will question her. i think that's unprecedented.

. lou: a few thoughts now on the presumptive republican presidential nominee, donald trump. two weeks ago you voted in our online poll and decide we should be calling trump then the presumptive nominee of the republican party, and many of you can be very proud indeed that our audience declared trump the presumptive nominee two weeks before the official declaration by rnc chair reince priebus and a week before the campaign did so itself. obviously, we're held to somewhat different standards, but we're all at the same place at the same time now. the rnc chairman last night tweeted -- trump thanked priebus in his victory speech as you heard last night, commending the

chairman for doing a fantastic job dealing with 17 egos. trump is the last republican candidate standing after a bruising party battle. it seems the calls are beginning to take effect. kasich thinking better of his election night statement to stay in the race until someone reaches 1237 delegates and doing the right thing today by dropping out. the club for growth that has been one of the leading and most annoying force against trump is now backing off their threats to pull support from candidates who would back the donald. now, they have to come all the way to their senses and vigorously support the republican nominee, as do all who oppose his candidacy. and trump, for his part, now says he will, quote, most likely raise money for the general election, more for the party and congressional candidates than for himself. back in july, i said the trump candidacy had already made an

where we've had somebody come from this far outside normal politics, win the nomination of one of the two great parties, and do so as decisively as trump has. remember, a lot of people saying he'll never get on 1237. it's going to be a long stretch from california. he got a month before california, it became obvious he was going to be the nominee, and that is in and of itself a remarkable achievement. lou: and at the same time, while many people even three weeks ago were talking about the republican party facing a contested convention and at least two of the candidates working toward that along with eight of the establishment itself, it is the democratic party now facing the prospect of a contested convention, at least if leading democratic socialist by the name of bernie sanders has his way? >> i did a facebook live this afternoon, and people get on send in questions.

one of the questions is what happens if hillary is indicted after she's nominated? i think it's a fascinating question. the fbi continues to work. they continue to move closer and closer to some major decisions. the democrats are on this track between a 73-year-old vermont socialist and a career politician who goes back all the way to the mcgovern campaign of 1972 or before that. [laughter] >> and yet, they're sort of sleepwalking into a country where people are sick and tired of business as usual and politics as usual. it's going to make for a very different fall campaign than anybody currently expects. lou: can you imagine a field of candidates before by the republican party, 16 rather than 17. no donald trump, and it would be jeb bush versus hillary clinton. the nation, i think, would be in quite a different mood, and there will be quite a different

xrefrgz the popular will. don't you agree? >> totally. first of all, because trump aroused so much excitement, we've had a 60% increase in voter turnout among republicans, while democrats are suffering from a 35% voter decrease. in states like pennsylvania, there's been a substantial shift of people. over 40,000 democrats left the party to become republicans in the last couple months. so trump has introduced a level of excitement, enthusiasm, optimism seven or eight or nine months ago and making america great again may well become one of the slogans that rivals john f. kennedy's new frontier as a way of explaining where we're going. lou: and certainly communicates a desperate, desperate cry from many americans who find their future frankly foreclosed

because of an economy that is not growing, because of wages that have been stagnant for so long and a middle class that is shrinking. let me turn very quickly, dr. ben carson has been appointed by donald trump to search out a vice presidential candidate. what qualities would you recommend to donald trump were he to ask you? >> well, first of all, i think dr. carson is a good choice because he's a man of impeccable integrity. extraordinarily bright and approach this in a very methodical way. i would say one, would the vice presidential nominee be capable of being president? that's the threshold test. this is a real job. and occasionally in american history we've suddenly had vice presidents become president, and they better be capable of doing it. two, is the vice presidential candidate compatible with donald trump? he's got to have someone who's

his junior partner but still partner, so that's key. and third, if they meet the first two tests, and only if they meet the first two tests, can they bring something to the ticket? can they help carry a state? can they help bring in an ethnic group? what is it they do that helps you get elected? lou: do you have anybody in mind? >> no, i think there are 10 or 15 very capable candidates, ranging from governor susana martinez in new mexico to governor scott walker in wisconsin. you can go all across the country. the republican party today has a lot of talented people. lou: including newt gingrich. what are your thoughts about him? [laughter] >> well, i think that he's very, very unlikely. he would not be at the much to my list of possible candidates. lou: i love the way we worked that through third person all the way to first person singular. newt gingrich, great to have you here in person. >> good to be with you. lou: thank you very much. two close encounters of the wild kind to show you now.

isis, straight talk, he says he will also not broadcast details what he wants done or how he wants it done. >> that's what reagan did. reagan had an objective to defeat the soviet union, win the cold war, they look at all aspects of international power. he didn't talk about it and say here's my plan, here's my strategy. he defeated the soviet union using economic means, alliances, talking to the soviet union's enemies and say we're going to help you, et cetera. lou: vladimir putin, he says he's reinforcing his forces, his troops irrespective for the united states, along with nato adds 4,000 troops and says he will retaliate. >> absolutely. we're now talking about an escalation in europe. i was with the chief of staff of the army last night, and he said he's never seen this kind of behavior, that in about
