how do i communicate that better to my investors? at the end of the day they have more predictable cash flows. liz: we'll put the names on lizclaman.com and. wolfgang kessler of fire app. [closing bell rings] the dow well off the trenches off the bottom. that is the closing bell. david and melissa with after the belle. melissa: i'm melissa francis. david: this is "after the bell." we have you covered on markets. here what else we have for you this hour. newvillements in the mystery surrounding the crash of egypt heir flight 804. 66 passengers, including three air marshals on the flight from paris to cairo when it disappeared off radar over the mediterranean. authorities say terrorism is likely behind all this. the airline confirming wreckage from the plane has been found. on this day of tragedy,
4:01 pm
google get this, dedicating its doodle all day to honoring a woman who once said she admirers usama bin laden and other terrorists. the details on this breaking story and a lot more this hour. melissa: back to the market. sinking stocks, majority of the dow ending in the red. phil flynn of price futures group is a fox news contributor. he is watching action from gold and oil at the cme. lori rothman on the floor of the new york stock exchange. lori, first to you, the dow ending well off its lows today. >> that is important point, melissa. the first thing i heard on the floor there was conviction selling and any drift back was just short-covering. that he's where we are bearish conviction on wall street and investors on main street as well. let's break it down. retail was the outstanding story. walmart earnings, cisco, nike shares helped dow from falling
4:02 pm
deeper into negative territory today. on nasdaq down half a percent. costco however was up 3 1/2%. that is one bright light on the nasdaq composite index. as for the broad market average that was slightly lower. transocean, l brands, disappointing earnings from l brands, two of the biggest drags on s&p. urban outfitters another retailer with strong earnings. urban outfitters up 10% in the session. maybe that willbetter portend better news from the gap. airline traveling stocks, obviously egypt air crash, crisis very troubling. we did see he an impact on the airline stocks and some other travel-related shares. delta up 1.75%. united con men tell, it was the big loser of them all today. back to you. >> lori, thank you. david: phil flynn, about commodities. i say this is the impact of a rising dollar.
4:03 pm
you have both oil and gold way down. gold down almost $20 an ounce. what say you? >> i say that is absolutely correct, dave, and it is really because what the fed did yesterday by increasing odds of interest rate increase in june the dollar is soaring. that put a hurt on commodities. tell you one commodity that tried to make a comeback, david, crude oil. crude oil was substantially lower to start the session. over a dollar lower. we clawed back to almost get even on the day. higher at one point. closed slightly lower. the reason for that is twofold, the risk for supply and strong demand. we saw in nigeria a terminal get shut down. that brought buyers back in. we heard a report from saudi arabia that their oil inventories have fallen to 18-month low and their production had fallen. we're seeing more supply side issues as well. take a look at gold. gold was not able to shake that off because gold is purely a dollar play right now. as long as the dollar continues
4:04 pm
that strength gold is not that good of an alternative. we're not seeing the same bounce in that. oil, near record demand for gasoline. reports from api after the close. we continue to see strong demand despite fears what the fed might or might not do. david: strong dollar, weak gold. that is the bottom line. phil flynn, good to see you my friend. melissa? melissa: fund managers keeping cash on hand instead of investing. cash levels rose 5.5% in may, nearing a 15-year high mark. according to bank of america's survey. here is scott martin of united advisors. also a fox news contributor. we have lenore hawkins, marry taos advisors founding partner. thanks for joining us. scott, let me start with you. why are so many people sitting in cash? >> melissa, this is one of those markets with limited visibility with regards to earnings and with regards to the economy than we've seen in this latest recovery since '09. i think investors being correct
4:05 pm
taking up cash level. don't forget what happened in february. we had a huge selloff to begin the year and investors did not get back in. a lot sold at the bottom and watched this thing rally back up. i think they're prepared to change behavior, if valuations come back, if there is a selloff i think buyers could show up. melissa: lenore, what are they sitting on the sidelines waiting for something like that? >> we've also seen to scott's point, this is a very difficult market to look at from a fundamental perspective because we've seen either a fed official or politician can massively move markets and override any fundamental of economics or a company with a few sentences. so it makes it tough to even short when it looks like things are highly overvalued. melissa: that's true. scott, people think there is too much intervention and you want to get out of way so the market isn't acting on a predictable manner so you sit on the sidelines because there is too much unknown. >> yeah. i mean if you have a federal
4:06 pm
reserve that is making more news, let's say, on a daily or weekly basis than a justin bieber or miley cyrus we have a problem here, houston, i think that is really going on. lenore pointed it out, depending rhetoric, pick your favorite fed governor you will see the market rally or dump based on a comment or two they made. that is not an investment environment to me where you put all that cash to work on the sidelines. david: enough bad news. talk about some good news and walmart is that story. bucking the negative trend in retail an slamming it today. walmart beating street estimates ending the day up 9%. this is largest one-day percent gain in nearly eight years. lenore, why is walmart going against that bad trend in retail? >> well, walmart fits really well within our cash-strapped consumer theme and one of the key things about walmart only about 8% of its sales depend on
4:07 pm
clothing versus target which is more 20%. what we've seen with retail sales, more to clothing. consumers were spending, not spending that much but where they were spending it wasn't clothing. retailers all about that getting hit hard like macy's and snored strom. david: 25% of all the food sold in america is sold at walmart. melissa: wow. david: big part of its sales figures. scott, want to talk about target and transgender bathrooms controversy, with walmart doing well could that reflect why target is doing so poorly? >> potentially some customers may be going over there but to me those two companies are kind of yin and yang. that is one thing that could change one quarter and move back the other way the next quarter so i'm not sure the whole thing with the lgbt stuff is to be excited about it, gender changes target was talking about.
4:08 pm
to me going forward issue with wall marred and amazon and target, they're largely behind and not catching up. melissa: speaking of gap, falling into downward trend and amazon might be the answer. the struggling apparel chain is open to selling clothes on amazon.com to help lure customers. this is according to the company's ceo. lenore, this makes all the sense in the world to me. i'm surprised they weren't doing it sooner. >> i couldn't agree more and this is what gap is pace facing all about the death of the mall. their biggest problem is lack of traffic. you look at amazon. amazon makes it so easy to buy anything you want. why would you not go there? particularly when you're gap, what you're selling is kind of the basics. basics i know my size, i know what i want. why not go online and get it shipped overnight? melissa: scott, obviously they have their own website, they were thinking as gap, why would i give amazon a piece of the action and put my stuff over there, the answer is because not enough people are going to the gap website.
4:09 pm
people like myself with amazon prime are there for everything. you would have gap stuff there as well. how much do you think they have to give away in order to be on the website though? >> listen, funny thing if they would have done that years ago, listen, they would giveaway less. nowadays amazon is grabbing everyone. melissa: good point. >> while the gap held off that is a mistake. anybody tried to take on amazon last few years safely say lost. amazon prime is the best deal on the planet as far as retail goes in my opinion. david: here is number one market story today. intersecting with the world of professional golf as the sec claims golfer phil mickelson made $900,000 in one week on insider tip about dean foods. scott, mickelson, we have to emphasize he has not been charged. he will have to pay a penalty but former chairman of the company is in the hot seat. >> doesn't look good for a lot of people involved, david. mickelson, if you google or
4:10 pm
internet things are going around phil mickelson over the years doesn't surprise me. he is paying it back and not being charged but that is ob shot. david: actual charge, i don't think it is called a charge, lenore, he is relief defendant. he is relief defendant. if he pays back the money, that $900,000 that he earned, they're going to call it even. i never heard of that. had you? >> it is, this is really difficult one to prove he actually knew that he was taking an action based on insider information. that brings up the, there is a lot of challenges around insider trading. david: there are. >> very difficult and those laws really only affect half of the equation because only really apply when people took action they may not have otherwise taken. those trades that would have happened like you would have sold, you would have bought but you didn't because of insider information, those can't even catch that and phil, we have to
4:11 pm
give him the benefit of the doubt, that he wasn't really aware. he is professional golfer. he is not really aware maybe of all the rules. david: bottom line, prosecutors love insider trading because they can stretch the definition almost any way they want when they want to get somebody and in this case, at least there are two people they're charging. we'll see how that turns out. thank you very much, gang. good to see you both. appreciate it. melissa. melissa: terrorism now being called the likely cause of the crash of egyptair flight 804. what exactly investigators are focused on and what do we know at this hour? we have an update on the investigation. david: this new bombshell of a "fox news poll," focusing on a potential trump-clinton matchup in november. clinton had the lead just a month ago but a very different story now. melissa: and we're learning what happened during the closed-door meeting between mark zuckerberg and a group of high-profile conservatives. how did facebook address allegations of an

4:16 pm
this hasn't been yet confirmed by authorities. none of this wreckage has been reached by the search-and-rescue teams and the egyptian president tonight has said that he wants that search to be set up so there can be some kind of confirmation. now the plane was flying late last night from cairo, sorry, from paris to cairo. the last communication from it was when it crossed into egyptian airspace from greece. there were 66 passengers and crew on board when it suddenly disappeared off the radar. now that flight radar indicates, it appears to swerve sharply before the crash and egyptian aviation authorities say this could mean that pilots lost control over the plane with a struggle in the cockpit. based on suddenness of this incident, the egyptian government thinks this could indicate a terror attack but they say it is too soon to rule out all possibilities of what might happen. there has been no claim of responsibility as of now from
4:17 pm
any terror group. so the wait goes on for the anxious relatives whose loved ones never showed up at cairo's airport. around half the passengers were egyptian citizens returning home. of course on everyone's mind is the crash of a russian airliner flying out of the egyptian holiday resort of sharm el-sheikh in november 2015, when it crashed, isis did claim responsibility for this although the egyptian government says it wants to wait for the investigation to conclude before confirming it was a terror attack but certainly that incident has heightened fears of flying to egypt. now meanwhile in this latest incident, the u.s. navy is supporting greece in the search for the missing plane but as of now, night has fallen over the waters where that plane disappeared and it is unlikely that search-and-rescue effort will be able to continue until daylight tomorrow. now of course it may take some time before we really know what
4:18 pm
happened to that aircraft. french investigators have flown out to egypt to join authorities there to the search for the black boxes. we may have to hang on until they are actually found before we determine what happened in this latest aviation tragedy, david. david: if we find those boxes. kitty logan, thank you very much. appreciate it. melissa. melissa: here is mike boyd, boyd group president and aviation expert and david sears, retired navy seal. mike, let me start with you. some important things came out of the report we just heard. first is the long period of time, roughly 40 minutes between when they last made contact from the ground with this plane, when no one was responding but the plane was still flying as normal. what does that tell you? >> something was wrong with communication, either machinery or people, something is broken down in the cockpit in terms of communicating. let's be real clear here. there is difference in terrorism and plane ol' sabotage. this could be a situation where a fight in the cockpit between somebody, it could be a suicide
4:19 pm
mission. it could be somebody putting a bomb on the airplane to get even with his ex-wife who is on board. there is a lot more information we need before we jump to a lot of terrorist-type conclusions although that is a good one. melissa: david, to that point, the other thing that really sticks out no one has claimed credit so far and in the past when isis or al qaeda claim to behind something they took credit early on. we haven't heard any of those climbs throughout the entire day today. what does that tell you? >> absolutely same thing. so that is a little bit unusual. you would expect they would want to claim credit for this if they could legitimately do that. so it does put some red flags up on the exact cause of this, whether it is a lone wolf or it is sabotage as mike said or a piece like that. melissa: yeah. mike, egyptair does not have the best reputation at this point. this isn't the first incident that they have endured. is that worrisome? >> it would be to me. again, what happened at sharm el-sheikh had nothing to
4:20 pm
do with an egyptian airplane. it was egyptian airspace and egyptian airport. going back, this is ancient history by aviation standards. there was egyptian airplane out of new york that apparently the copilot wanted to commit suicide. with all that is going on in egypt, last thing i want to do honestly get on egyptian airplane because i'm not sure the government has a clue. melissa: david, kind of the same point, so much terror of late has originated out of paris. to see francois holland out there talking about another tragedy happened whether terror or not, they have been such a target. that does factor in? >> it does and regardless of the speculation that will happen was this terrorist event or was it not, with do know there will be second third order effects on egypt on this of the 11% of their gdp is from tourism. this is going to hurt their gdp. as well, it gives everybody an opportunity and is a catalyst to
4:21 pm
take a look at airport security, regardless how it turned out. let's review that again, especially crew, maintenance, baggage handlers, those pieces. >> whatever it was, something went terribly wrong. thanks to both of you. david? david: retailer gap was out with numbers. looked good first. now the stock is down of a hours. what is going on, lori? reporter: david, don't forget the bar for gap was set so low. earnings per share came in and revenue was light. gap is pulling the 2016 financial forecast. you know the company had all kinds of problems. saying same-store sales down 5%. they will close some 75 old navy stores and banana republic stores all around the world. also today, as we've been reporting the gap sheet said, hey, you know he is open to selling some gap apparel and products on amazon. so it is clear there is a strategy going forward but it is also clear that gap isn't willing to say how much or how
4:22 pm
little it will impact the bottom line by pulling that earnings forecast. melissa: wow. david: interesting tactic with amazon. if you can't fight them, john them. thank you, lori, appreciate it. >> yes. melissa: we're less than three hours away from trump's fund-raiser tonight but the money is not for him. google is using the front page today to honor a woman who honored usama bin laden and other terrorists. breaking news on that is coming up. here's the plan. you're a financial company that cares, but your logo is old and a little pointy. so you evolve. you simplify. you haven't changed. you still help people live their best lives. and finally your new logo is ready, and you decide the perfect time to show the world is right... now.
4:23 pm
4:25 pm
melissa: he has a friend in trump. in just a few hours the presumptive republican nominee will hold a fund raiser event for governor chris christie. fox business's connell mcshane in lawrenceville, new jersey with the latest on this one. connell, take it away. reporter: you know, melissa, we usually have one or the other. you're usually covering a rally for presidential candidate like donald trump or standing outside or know of a fund-raiser a
4:26 pm
candidate is holding one even and that is normally closed to press. today donald trump, i don't think anybody of us would be surprised that trump campaign would do differently, combining two. part fund-raiser, part rally. people going in here to support donald trump and will see chris christie and pay $200 a ticket. most. trump rallies, in fact all trump rallies are free to get in. he is helping out former opponent. chris christie endorsed donald trump for president. someone may be speculated to be on the list of potential running mates for donald trump. to that point, there is interesting numbers out from quinnepiac university. remember chris christie is still sitting governor of state of new jersey. turns out his own state they don't think it would be a good idea to pick chris christie as donald trump's running mate. 72% of new jersey voters said it wouldn't be good idea at all. doesn't get ther with republicans. more than 60% said christie won't be good for trump. that being said, trim will be
4:27 pm
here and christie. he will have after that more traditional fund-raiser for the state gop. i have logistical news surrounding the trump campaign. you likely know paul manafort, one of trump's top aides up on capitol hill meeting with republican leaders in the house. he was brought in as what they call the convention manager. we all knew that he was much more than that for trump. today we found officially from the campaign, he is campaign chairman and chief strategist. handling big picture issues as corey lewandoski, we're told at least will handle the day-to-day operations. melissa: huh. i thought they would give that job to charlie gasparino. you never know i guess. connell, thank you. kidding. kidding. david: never happen. >> very good. david: look at shares of gap. they are now up significantly after hours, about 3%. but weak sales leading to major cost-cutting measures. retailer announcing plans to close 75 old navy and banana
4:28 pm
republic stores world way. a lot of people will be put out of work by that. melissa: yeah. david: not good news. the shares are up after-hours a bit because expectations were so low. melissa: bad news for hillary clinton. new national poll shows trump with an advantage over the former secretary of state. what that means for the race. that's next. david: also mark zuckerberg meeting with some of the best-known conservatives including some fox people amid reports that fox book, facebook, suppressing political views. we'll talk to one of the men who was at that meeting coming right up. >> we were kind of pushing on an open door. facebook knew it had a trust problem with this community and they are determined to try to turn that around. the e-class has 11 intelligent driver-assist systems.
4:31 pm
4:32 pm
so in this crash test, one thing's missing: a crash. the 2016 e-class. lease the e350 for $499 a month at your local mercedes-benz dealer. david: trump wasting no time starting his switch to the general election on very strong note. astonishing new "fox news poll," taking the lead in a head-to-head match up with hillary clinton. trump was behind seven points ago. here to weigh in, guy benson, townhall.com columnist and sabrina schaefer, on "forbes on fox" every saturday morning. we'll talk about that later. christie setzer, new heights communications president. guy, momentum, nobody in this election cycle taken advantage of mow men than donald trump.
4:33 pm
he has the wind behind his back. >> that's right. he is nominee for republican party. consolidating party behind him. on other side, there is nasty fight that will drag on at least until june. donald trump is taking advantage of that this current moment in time and has very slim lead over hillary clinton. david, the story of this poll is unfavorability and negative ratings. david: unbelievable. >> donald trump had terrible unfavorables for a long time. hillary clinton has spiked to new low or high however you want to call it in this poll at 61% unfavorable. david: incredible. >> we hear a lot about gender gap being problem for donald trump. underwater among 30 points among women. hillary is under water by 44 points among men. this is issue for her. david: talk about the gender gap with sabrina. every time trump would win one of the primaries okay, that's fine but he still behind with hillary. now he doesn't have to say that anymore. this is a big jump. >> right. there is a lot of good news for donald trump.
4:34 pm
one area guy points out that is a problem and will continue to be one with women voters. hillary clinton is 14 point ahead with women voters. now not the case really one married younger women. they're still breaking for bernie sanders. so we don't know exactly where they're going to go in the general election but i think it is generally bad news for republicans in the sense that they actually did a lot to close that gender gap during the midterm elections, narrowing it to five points. this is a, wrong direction. david: christine, you have to struggle to find bad nice for donald trump in these polls because you look, for example, the independents, huge, we're 1/3 republican, 1/3 democrat, 1/3 independents. independents went by a lead of 14 points! >> yeah, i think it is difficult to extrapolate too much from the poll. much more reflick tiff what guy is pointing out we're in this weird moment right now where 16 days ago donald trump did in fact wrap up the nomination. hillary clinton we pretty much know she is going to be the nominee but it is not official yet. we still have a little bit more
4:35 pm
of this fight. i think what this is about, very small moment that we're in right now where we've not quite yet started general election battle and -- david: i would say, guy, i would say that is exactly the point at which donald trump relishes, the point which he can completely, 100% turn his attention to hillary clinton, once he does so, could these numbers even get worse for hillary? >> we'll see. democrats will coalesce at some.around here when she is the nominee. we'll have a better i think picture of this in the fall but look, donald trump, i said it many times is fundamentally flawed candidate. the good news for him he is up against a fundamentally flawed candidate. david: a more fundamentally flawed candidate according to this poll. all right. sabrina is on "forbes on fox" every saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. we had to point that out. sabrina, thank you very much. christie, see you in a moment. thanks, guys. melissa: face-to-face at facebook, a group of conservatives meeting with facebook ceo mark zuckerberg
4:36 pm
after reports that facebook employees suppressed conservative news on the website, trending topics section. the daily signals editor-in-chief, rob blue was in the meeting and joins me now. rob, i understand they explained it would be really difficult for facebook employees to inject bias into the stories. was that part of the meeting they said we kind of, we don't think our employees are actually doing this? >> well, yes, there was a technical discussion about how trending topics work and algorithm play as significant role but there are human interactions with the content. one of the things that conservatives pointed out, facebook has overwhelmingly liberal staff. we look at political donations. over 80% go to liberals or democrats. so when you have people like interacting with news content, the way that they phrase it, the topic for trending topics could influence ultimately what you see in facebook. melissa: absolutely.
4:37 pm
it is shocking they would call the meeting to bring everyone together and sort of saying -- seemed like they are saying they don't have a problem, is that not true? >> they were quite clear they do have a problem. they have a problem, a trust problem with conservatives. that was made clear to us. melissa: a trust problem, but it is not our fault you don't trust us. sounds like they were not taking any sort of culpability from the fact that websites saying they're being suppressed. for example, you know, we've had folks on who had their web pages shut down and at the same time, you have facebook pages up that say, f-trump and this and that, and they don't take down. so they have a problem? >> you're correct. absolutely, and i think facebook acknowledges there are some challenges and there are some problems. this was a, this was a step on their part to help explain both the community standards which leads to some pages being taken down and also how the algorithm works for trending topics and news feed.
4:38 pm
it was opportunity for conservatives to explain some of the grievances that they have against facebook and make facebook aware of how the perception is amongst the conservative movement that facebook is a liberal entity. we at the daily signal have facebook comments on all of our stories and i hear almost daily about some of our readers with facebook comments and unwillingness to engage with even that aspect of facebook. so there is a problem facebook has with conservatives. hopefully a first step to furthering a conversation and figuring out how they can address it. melissa: yeah, i don't know. i was hoe hopeful ahead of it but afterwards the feedback make the sound like they're saying we don't have a problem, you have a problem which isn't going to get you very far but hopefully it is just a first step in a more positive direction. rob, thank you for coming on. appreciate it. david: same thing. suing for free speech. con sop tiff commentator ben shapiro, suing university of california at l.a. saying that
4:39 pm
the school prevented him from speaking there. adam shapiro with all the details. hi, adam. >> so everyone ben shapiro is not relation but he is well-known but did try to speak on the campus of california state university at l.a. back on september 25th. you remember there was a near riot with close to 1000 protesters who locked arms and blocked people who wanted to get into the speech to hear shapiro. this is sponsored by the young americans foundation. they received approval from the university. then that was withdrawn. they threatened to sue and they to the approval but then this is what happened. so people couldn't get in to hear shapiro. lawsuit being filed today, says senior staff at california state university, actually made it possible for the protesters in violation of the university's free speech policy, made it possible for the protesters to shut down the speech. that lawsuit filed today is a case.
4:40 pm
it is first amendment case. named as defendants is are the president of the university, william covino. nancy, california state university l.a. campus vice president for student life. there is this professor, molina abdullah, professor of pan african studies who was tweeting to people to go shut down this speech. essentially with they're saying is that the university took a proactive roll in stopping and preventing free speech of a club on the campus, the young americans for freedom, young americans foundation in violation of not only their own stated university policies, but the u.s. constitution. david: that little thing. >> that little thing. david: adam shapiro, thank you very much. melissa: i am still bugged about the facebook thing. like someone says i'm sorry you feel like i did something wrong. that is not an actual apology. david: that is inside the beltway apology what that is. melissa: right. egyptair flight likely brought down by a terrorist act but so far no one claimed
4:41 pm
responsibility for the deadly crash. >> if you're a jihadi looking for a local target in the middle east, egypt is at the top of your list if legalzoom has your back.s, over the last 10 years we've helped one million business owners get started. visit legalzoom today for the legal help you need to start and run your business. legalzoom. legal help is here.
4:44 pm
david: you're looking at live shots, you can see the tail there. this is egyptair flight 804. scheduled to take off from charles de gaulle airport this is from paris headed to cairo. the same route of the plane that crashed into the mediterranean. on board, that plane, see the tail of it are members of missing passengers. they are desperate, desperate to get to cairo for any kind of answers they can on this. melissa: so sad. ashley webster joins from us the newsroom with latest on this, ashley, what can you tell us? >> melissa, a little bit more confusion late afternoon here. because it is late evening in paris and even later than that in cairo. greek officials saying debris we
4:45 pm
found in eastern mediterranean is not that of this flight 804. the egypt air flight. they say there is no, blue and white colors on the plane have not been found on this debris. so this is just adding to the confusion as you can imagine. it is a race bense time. they're trying to get to where this plane actually disappeared, where is it? they're trying to obviously get to the black box which will be emitting a signal that will last up to 30 days. but in the meantime, we know that the authorities in paris have begun an investigation at charles de gaulle. we understand that the police officers who were on duty last night have been interrogated, not interrogated or interviewed let's say quite thoroughly what if anything they noticed late last night, if someone may have had access to the plane. in fact the french authorities are investigating anyone who could have come in contact with this particular plane. what is interesting is, the search of a plane, even if it is in turnaround situation, it came
4:46 pm
from cairo, it was going back to cairo, anytime a plane like that is in turnaround it would be searched thoroughly. and there were three security personnel on the flight that would have carried out those checks. so that makes it interesting if you believe there may have been some sort of a device on board. we do believe that the flight itself showed no signs of trouble prior to it disappearing from the radar. no signal of may day or emergency signal from the pilot on board which leads investigators to that it was such a catastrophic event that pilot or crew were not able to put out any sort of emergency. confusion no doubt but this story continues to change hour by hour. hopefully we know more tomorrow at daylight. melissa: number of things in that report officials put out there conflict what they themselves earlier today, adding about the debris? >> well, the promisee gript is
