he made a mistake. lou: 85% accuracy. thank you both. appreciate it. thanks for being with us. congressman tom marino. we hope you wiry as well. you at home, tweeting all the time. now the man himself. lou dobbs. keep it right here. lou: good evening, everybody, i'm lou dobbs. the stage set for historic general election showdown. on the republican side, donald trump, a political outsider who has shattered the republican record for primary votes winning nearly 13.4 million votes despite running against 16 other candidates. over on the democratic side, hillary clinton, the first female presidential nominee and who may also be the first presidential nominee to ever be indicted. last night both candidates gave a preview of their strategy in the contest.
8:01 pm
>> when trump says a distinguished judge born in indiana can't do his job because of his mexican heritage or he mocks a reporter with disabilities, or calls women pigs, it goes against everything we stand for. >> hillary clinton turned the state department into her private hedge fund. the russians, the saudis, the chinese, all gave money to bill and hillary and got favorable treatment in return. lou: all of that and amongst the issues we'll be talking about with trump campaign manager in just moments here. also among our guests tonight, trump supporter, in fact, the first member of the house to endorse donald trump, republican congressman chris collins joining us. a lot to talk about tonight, including terror striking at the heart of tel aviv, four
8:02 pm
people killed, five others injured in a terrorist attack where two suspected palestinian terrorists opened fire with submachine guns in a marketplace. israeli police say one gunman has been arrested, the other shot and is in custody. we'll have updates as we receive them here this evening. our top story tonight, donald trump addressing his search for a vice president in an interview with bloomberg. trump saying it's bernard down to four or five politicians and a short list includes one former rival who has so far refused to endorse him. joining us now, the man in charge of -- well, achieving that selection, trump campaign manager cory, he's been overseeing the campaign's vice presidential search and selection process. great to see you. th thank you for having me. congratulations. >> thank you. lou: and as donald trump is
8:03 pm
talking about a vice president, what more can you tell us? he's even looking at a former rival who has an endorse yet. >> well, if you look at the field, 17 candidates who ran in this primary process, some great candidates in that field from swing states to important states and people with great elective experience and washington d.c. experience and what mr. trump said, he wants to achieve a serious legislative agenda if he's given the privilege of president of the united states. and that means bringing somebody on board who can complement his abilities. so looking for a person who has that washington d.c. experience, that politician if you will who can help, that's what they're looking at right now. >> we've got a month and a half. at what point do you expect within that month and a half that donald trump has decided -- well, decided who it's going to be? i know he says he's going to announce at the convention. that's traditionally the way to do it. and i think -- personally i
8:04 pm
think that's a terrific way to do it. it's dramatic, it's impactful. but i would like to know how soon he's going to know who that is. >> well, i think the one thing about mr. trump is that we all know who's going to make the final decision on this and our job on the staff side is to make sure he has a full picture of whoever that candidate is and we're assembling all of the resources right now to make sure that he understands the pros and cons of each of his options, and he's going to pick that person. takes us a little time to do our homework on the back end. we'll have that for him in the next three or four weeks and he'll be making the decision then. lou: all right. and donald trump saying monday he's going to have a big speech on hillary clinton examining the time period in which running was state department in part like a hedge fund he said. can you give us something more specific? >> i think the two components of this, many of the younger voters don't remember the clinton years. so we're going to talk about what the years brought to the american public and the problems associated with that.
8:05 pm
we're going to talk about senator clinton's record in the united states senate, something that she doesn't often talk about, this commonly forgotten. we're also going to look at her tenure as the secretary state of the and what that means for our relationships with countries in other places. the job is much more entailed than just getting on a airplane and flying millions of miles; right? we have to look at brought fourth under here and clear dichotomy in this selection, clear difference between what donald trump wants to do, and outlined this last night, put america first. the american have to decide. and i think sometimes reminding the people when you look at their records of what they achieved as secretary of state, what he's achieved as a private sector businessman is a clear choice come november. lou: america first. it is now a slogan resonating, increasingly it's clear and trump, again, using it last night in his speech. it's with great frequency and
8:06 pm
purpose. is that going to be -- come america first not only in foreign policy but america first period? >> yeah. i think our message on this campaign has been make america great again and what that means in order to do that, you have to put america first which is making sure we have the trade deals. bringing back our jobs here, improving our economy. that's what america first is. what that means is no longer are we the policemen of the world. if you want the resources of the u.s. government and u.s. military, maybe there's a fee associated with that moving forward. maybe want to take care of ourselves first. we don't want our jobs and factory taken overseas. proud to be an american is a great story. and that's what we want to focus on. lou: he reached out to bernie sanders supporters in that address. made up, by the way, of a significant number, we don't know how many. but a significant number of independents. understandably. is he going to reach out as well to conservatives? because those conservatives
8:07 pm
right now are anxious about his direction and public policy. his direction as a candidate. >> so if you look at where the polling indicates right now, mr. trump is getting about 86% of the republican vote. to put that into perspective, mitt romney four years ago 92% of the vote. so in a three-week window, almost a month window, we've consolidated the republican party behind donald trump, brings all of those people together. outlined conservative judgments that the type of person he would choose should he be elected president in the superior court, conservatives unified. lou: and uniform in their approval of that list. >> that's exactly right. so what you see are the conservatives and the moderates and the republican party but more importantly the independents out there. we now have 6 million more vote than our next closest exerted. four million more votes than have ever been cast in the primary process.
8:08 pm
that's because new people coming on board. it's not just the republicans, you need to appeal to those independents who are unsatisfied with the government over the last four, eight, and even 20 years. lou: and there is a calculus in the electoral college that has to be consisting to all of you. that is take what romney did in florida, ohio, and pennsylvania, and donald trump becomes the presidential elect. >> that's right. and if you look at the polls right now with we're withing in florida. the latest poll out. winning in pennsylvania. we're winning in ohio. we're dead even or ahead in the state of new hampshire. we're going to put states like michigan in play. we're going to do well in states like nevada. if you look at the map, virginia is another great opportunity for us. if you look at the map and the ability to expand that, it's critical and the only way we're going to be successful is bring out the states that do lost four years ago. lou: and finally donald trump saying today he was disappointed at the criticism that he's received from some
8:09 pm
of the republican leadership. is there at this point a detaunt on public critique either from trump toward the leadership of the gop and gop leaders toward him? because it becomes offputting to voters at some point whether it is trump or whether it is ryan or mitch mcconnell at a time when they're looking to see a unification process well underway. >> well, there's a unification process underway, but you have to remember these individuals agree on more issues than they disagree on. they agree that middle dallas tax cuts are important, reducing our deficit are important, that's not to say there are going to be disagreements in public policy and that's fair to have. lou: i guess the point is, cory, is it going to be private from now on rather than public, have you or any member of the staff talked with the rnc or speaker ryan's office and said, you know, if we're going to have these little critiques, let's do it
8:10 pm
mutuelly in private. >> we've had great conversation, we've talked to the r nc every day on a regular basis and said, look, let's agree on the things we can agree on. let's make sure we're unified with one message and that message is very clear. republicans need to take back the white house in november of this year. it's very clear difference between the two, and we want to see republican in the white house, i think the majority leader wants to see in the white house, i think the speaker of the house wants to see a republican in the white house. and the chairman of the nc. so we're all rolling in the same direction on this one. lou: and you're well on your way. extraordinary performance during the primary campaigns. congratulations, cory. >> thank you so much. lou: again. >> thank you. lou: we're coming right back. we're going to have much, much more. stay with us. the gop is now the party of lincoln and trump. the presidential nominee promising in true presidential fashion to make his party proud and victorious. >> you've given me the honor

8:16 pm
supporters and the independence that surprised a large number of those supporters, what are the odds that you think he'll be able to attract? >> i think they'll get some. people forget that when kennedy challenged carter, 27% of the kennedy supporters voted for reagan in 1980. my sense today is these young people are not tied to an ideology, they're tied to a movement, and they want something that's antiwashington, and i think trump has a real chance of making message clear. so i think it's very worthwhile effort, and i think it's -- i think they basically in their own mind rejected hillary and fought hillary for the last several months, and i think they feel their candidate didn't get treated fairly, even though he did. but at the end of the day i think they're a perfect target. i think easily -- lou: let me ask another question. and that is the outreach to conservatives. that has to -- that has to be a highly energic initiative as well.
8:17 pm
is it not on the part of trump? >> i think his policies. we're the conservatives. i'm a conservative -- lou: i've got to be honest with you. i can't tell you what a conservative is anymore. >> right. lou: everybody says they're conservative in the republican party. >> there are very few things that he said in the course of his campaign that i don't agree with. i want america to be first, i want america to be the strongest military. lou: do you love that slogan? america first? >> i was thinking in that interview the president of paris stood up and said we're going to be first? or the japanese? that's always their attitude so why shouldn't we have the same attitude? lou: because we have been under under some hypnotic paul for decades now. and our sociologists --
