5:01 am
boom, boom, we thought it was the stereo. after the second shot there was a pause and it started shooting, shooting. nicole: police say that 29-year-old mateen used a handgun and rifle. lauren: police say he was mentally unstable and mentally ill. >> he would express hate towards things and toward everything n. that respect, you know, yeah, emotional instability and changing totally different. lauren: omar mateen pledged allegiance to isis in a call. investors have not found direct communication between mateen and
5:02 am
isis and they are looking for electronic devices. nicole: we have seen a selloff. s&p futures down 7. lauren: tough day, 7:01 a.m., monday june 13th. good morning, thank you for joining us. welcome to fbn:am, first look at morning markets, breaking news and what to expect for the day ahead. nicole: we have just jeff flock in orlando with the latest, jeff. jeff: good morning, just a couple of blocks outside of police parameter, police investigate working overnight. all of the bodies have not yet been removed. 50 casualties, 50 dead at least
5:03 am
as many more injured, many of them authorities say is possible will die as well because their injured are so severe. let's take down what we know about the shooter and the investigation. the past of the shooter specically we have reported widely the 9-1-1 call that police referred to but fbi has not confirmed in which mr. mateen pledged allegiance to isis. it's unclear whether he had contact with isis, whether this was inspired or whatever. we will have more by his father in half an hour that he believed was more a hatred for gays. she made reference to bipolar
5:04 am
disorder. coworkers had report that had -- reported that he had made connections to isis. consequently he was able to purchase the guns in this attack legally. perhaps the most poynant words from mouth of those who survived. listen. >> i took my bandena and tied it up in the bullet hole, he was bleeding so bad that his leg was red and my hands were covered and i didn't know what to do just tell him to be strong and somebody else on dispatch called 9-1-1. i was making sure he was going on okay and telling him he's okay.
5:05 am
jeff: the family's of this victim still at this point do not know whether their loved one is dead or alive. we are about three hours away from a briefing, not to us but to family members who will be told whether their loved one is in the hospital or, in fact, they are deceased. lauren: there's a count that the police came in, they asked the people in pulse, the nightclub to raise their hand if they were alive. that's how graphic the scene was. meanwhile president obama spoke from the white house of the tragedy. >> a further reminder of how easiesy for someone to get a weapon in school, house of worship or movie theater or a nightclub and we have to decide if that's the country we want to be.
5:06 am
in fact, to do nothing is a decision as well. >> nicole: he did not connect it with islamic extremism. lauren: presidential candidates all tweeting about it. donald trump did connect it. i appreciate the congrats for being right on radical islamic terrorism. i don't want congrats and toughness and vigilance. hillary clinton tweeted this, this is the time to do everything we can to defend our community and bernie sanders tweeting from what is now known this was an terrorist act by isis, that despicable organization must be destroyed. nicole: joining us national cochair morgan ortegus. morgan, we know that the gunman
5:07 am
omar mateen pledged allegiance to isis? morgan: good morning, nicole. i grew up near orlando so it's quite tragic day yesterday. you know, the interesting thing about all of this is that this lone shooter, lone-wolf attack from the propaganda that isis have. they have media centers throughout syria and iraq, have focused on putting propaganda videos, they are very active on twitters and encourage if you're a man come seek a bride and if you're a woman, wolf-lone attacks. they're trying to scare people, of course, into thinking that they have reach far greater than
5:08 am
they do militarily in iraq and syria. of course, it's devastating but place into the sophisticated media machine that they have. lauren: hey, morgan, this is lauren simonetti, we just sent out tweet that is the presidential candidates wrote all morning. how does this affect the race for the white house now? we keep talking about the economy, that being a top issue, terrorism is a top issue too, right now is it the issue to campaign around? morgan: i think it has to be one of the top priorities, what we have to look at is not what hillary clinton or donald trump issued yesterday in terms of their statements, what i really care about is what is their plan to defeat isis. none of it matters unless you have a plan to defeat isis and not only does that mean first accepting and identifying radical islam for what it is but it also means that we have to work with our partners in region
5:09 am
who are with us on the ground who understand this site. lauren: yeah. morgan: this is something that we have been since 9/11. what are we at 15 years now? lauren: yeah. morgan: what i'm looking forward in candidates i'm less concerned about statements released but what is your plan to defeat isis. until we get realistic that we have to go militarily in iraq and syria, these type of attacks are going to continue. nicole: what are your plans and how do we fight isis? i want to bring it right back to orlando massacre and mateen being unable and you mentioned 9/11, noting that he changed after 9/11. talk about the surveillance, he was investigated by the fbi twice, now they are looking at cell phone, computer, this week to find if he did it on his own, did he have direct communication
5:10 am
with isis that told him to do this. morgan: absolutely, the one thing we know about the fbi sadly while he was under investigation and they didn't catch him, there are hundreds of more that we have heard from, department of homeland security, these types of people, so we know that isis has sympathizers in the u.s. it's really difficult thing to tackle the propaganda that they put out. you're talking about his cell phone, you know, is he contacting isis through twitter, is he contacting isis through telegram? the social media has been mosque from today. now you just need to go on twitter and facebook. nicole: morgan, you're so right. morgan ortegus, thank you so much. you're an intelligence expert. thank you for getting up with us
5:11 am
on a very important day to break this all down for us, thanks, morgan. morgan: any time, thanks nicole. lauren: quick take on global market action overnight starting in asia, intense selloff, stocks were up more than 3%. shanghai and hong kong down two-thirds percent. nicole: ten days from whether or not britain will decide to remain in the euro zone, quarante down. lauren: dow futures down 70 points. s&p down by the same percentage or eight points and nasdaq also down 4% or 20 points. we are seeing selling this side of the atlantic intensifying
5:12 am
right now. nicole: oil lower and gold higher. lauren: coming up a new day in orlando, a day after the worst mass shooting in u.s. history, take a look at this morning's edition of the orlando sentinole. we will have the latest on the motive of the shooting. you're watching fbn:am, first look at morning markets and breaking news. coming up orlando. >> he changed another ammunition and i could smell the ammo in the air and i knew it was a gun, we need to leave
5:15 am
>> breaking news this morning. killing 50 people and wounding 50 others. >> all you hear is gunshots, all you hear is gunshots. like i don't understand. nicole: law enforcement official says 29-year-old omar mateen pledge allegiance to isis before the shooting. the terror group has also claimed responsibility for the massacre but investigators have not found evidence of direct
5:16 am
communication between mateen and isis. lauren: family was from afghanistan and he was born from new york and then moved to florida. ex-wife says he was mentally unstable. nicole: s&p futures down 7 and a half. lauren: fox news live in orlando with the very latest outside the pulse nightclub. lilan, what do you know? >> ladies, good morning, the investigation continues here overnight, hundreds of fbi agents and atf agents unless the pulse nightclub. they're behind me about 2-300 yards, a number of the bodies are still inside. they turned the air-conditioning down to preserve crime scene of this florida heat. families still waiting to be
5:17 am
told that their loved ones will never come home. we are getting a look of gunfight outside and inside the pulse nightclub. swat team used armored vehicle to breakthrough the wall and rescue about 30 hostages who had been held for three hours. >> bullets flying in and the people that were in the floor, you know, when the body receives shots, that's how -- the last thing that i saw. so that's why we went to the restroom and i prayed for my life until the police came and saved up. >> omar mateen arrived and multiple reloads of ammunition. about 2:00 o'clock in the morning he engaged in orlando police officer in a shootout. that police officer was there working off-duty security at the club.
5:18 am
there was a shootout, mateen went inside and continued rampage inside the club in three hours where this turns into a hostage crisis, there were 911 calls not only from victims but also mateen calling 911 pledging allegiance to isis. it was unclear whether this was inspired by isis or this attack was directed by isis. >> this is an act of terrorism. you just can't imagine this happening in any community, you can't imagining happening to your state or happening to your country. >> now, we know isis has called for a -- attacks and obviously that's something that the fbi is going to be looking at, seeing if mateen had any contact with
5:19 am
anybody else and see what they can get off his cell phones. ladies, thank you. lauren: thank you very much. >> nicole: latest reaction of the largest mass shooting including reactions from the shooter's ex-wife and witnesses. let's check out u.s. stock market futures, europe in two-month lows, s&p futures down 8. you're watching fbn:am, first look at morning markets and breaking news. >> i can't explain what -- because i was in the dressing room. it just happened that quick.

lauren: breaking news this morning, a gunman storming a packed gay nightclub in orlando saturday night. it was latin night, they were supposed to be having fun and they were until this, that gunman killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 50 others. >> and then he would change and put another ammunition and i could just smell the ammo in the air. lauren: 29-year-old omar mateen pledged allegiance to isis in a 911 call before the shooting. investigators have not found evidence of direct communication between mateen and isis. nico was from afghanistan, he was
5:24 am
born right here in new york and his family later move today florida. ex-wife says he was mentally unstable and mentally ill. lauren: we are also looking at the market movements because we do have selloff in asia, europe, in the u.s. nasdaq futures down 21 points. nicole: before last night's tony awards, offered tribute to the orlando victims. >> all around the world part-time are trying to come to terms with the horrific events that took place in orlando this morning. on behalf of the whole community and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity. all we can say is you are not on your own right now, your tragedy is our tragedy. theater is a place where every race, sexuality and gender is equal and embraced and loved.
5:25 am
hate will never win. together we have so make sure of that. tonight's show is a symbol and celebration of that principle. nicole: hamilton won 11 tonies. lauren: let's take another look at market action. nikkei in japan down 3 and a half percent. the hang seng in hong kong down two and two-thirds and the kospi in south korea down about 2%. nicole: nervousness and jitters because of so many factors. you can see the london ftse half a percent. dax down half a percent. lauren: 13 months -- 13 days ahead of the uk vote whether to stay in the european union and two days before the federal reserve decision on interest rates here.
5:26 am
ahead of all that, dow futures down 72 points, s&p futures down 9 and nasdaq down 22. nicole: checking out key commodities. 12.87 a troy ounce. gold is higher but oil pulling back 48.52 the barrel. lauren: this is how the dollar is trading in key currencies. the dollar and the japanese yen very strong today versus the u.s. dollar. nicole: they are running to the safe havens. look at this. 1.63%. lauren: coming up we will have the latest on the biggest mass shooting in u.s. history and what may have motivated the killer, this guy right here omar mateen. coming up. you're watching fbn:am, first look at morning markets and breaking news. >> the person that i was with was shot in the back, i took my

5:30 am
>> orlando command, we have shots fire, stay back. >> position of cover. all personnel, if i can see your face, you're not in a position of cover. nicole: deady -- deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. lauren: we have breaking news to bring you right now, ap is supporting that islamic state radio calls omar mateen the shooter in the tragedy, one of the sold yers of the caliphate in america. that shooting killed at least 50
5:31 am
people and wounded at least more than 50 others, listen. >> all of a sudden we heard, boom, boom, we thought it was the stero, something going on with just the music and after the second shot there was a pause and then it started shooting, shooting, shooting. lauren: 29-year-old omar mateen using assault-type rifle and handgun in nightclub early sunday morning. nicole: he was mentally unstable and mentally ill. >> when he would get in tempers he would express hate towards things, toward everything. so in that respect, you know, yeah, but he had emotional instability and totally different. nicole: omar mateen pledged allegiance to isis before the shooting. terror group has always claimed responsibility for the massacre.
5:32 am
investigators have not found evidence between direct communication between mateen and isis. authorities are looking through electronic devices. lauren: we are looking at market movement. stocks in asia close lower. nicole: good morning, everybody, june 13th. welcome to fbn:am, first look at morning markets, breaking news and what to expect for the day ahead. lauren: i want to reemphasize. isis calling omar mateen one of the soldiers of the caliphate. jeff flock in orlando with the very latest. good morning, jeff. jeff: we expect to get more details from the fbi this morning perhaps 10:00 o'clock eastern time. two hours after they brief privately the families of the victims of the shooting, the
5:33 am
shooting that took place well over 24 hours ago along orange avenue in orlando. many of those folks, loved ones of the victims don't know whether they're loved one is alive or in a hospital perhaps being attended to or perhaps deceased. they will find out at 8:00 o'clock. as omar mateen he was an american-born one. this is what we know about him. 29 year's old born in new york to afghan parents. security guard, licensed security guard, that was his profession in addition license today carry firearms. that's why he was able to purchase two of the guns used in this attack legally within the last week or so according to authorities but they haven't given specific details about that in addition mr. sadik was
5:34 am
interviewed and was able to purchase the guns, on two occasions fbi had contact with mr. mateen, one occasions where coworkers reported, they saw something and said something, he apparently saying that he had contacts with terrorists as recently as 2013, they investigated that and were unable to establish any evidence. his ex-wife says perhaps more than a political agenda this was mental illness on his part, his father said that it was motivated by homophobia. he claimed allegiance to isis and now, of course, we have isis claiming allegiance to him. this will unfold throughout the
5:35 am
morning, folks. lauren: jeff flock thank you for the update this morning. nicole: president obama spoke from the white house about the tragedy. >> this is a specially-heartbreaking day from our friends, fellow american who is are lesbian, gay, bisexual. the shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to sing, live, the place where they were attacked a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness and speak their minds and advocates for their civil rights. nicole: president obama did call the act of terrorism. he did not connect it with islamic extremism. lauren: breaking news. isis radio just moments ago calling omar mateen one of the soldiers of the caliphate in america. the big question is what does
5:36 am
this say about the connection between the killer and isis. no one knows better than fox news terrorism expert waleed farris. also adviser for donald trump. >> good morning, thank you for having. lauren: what does that statement from islamic state radio suggest to you about the real connection between mateen and isis? >> well, basically the islamic state isis is now declaring that mateen was a member. now, was that reality or was it that after he performed his terror act and then he became in the sense a model, they taken the advantage of a victory in the eyes of their own people so they made that statement. but what it tells us is that isis can through either members
5:37 am
or supporters or partisans reach inside the mainland. nicole: basically you're talking about islamic state breaking news from the radio calling him the soldier and embracing him in their group, whether or not he was a former member or was now elevate today a member because of this act, in the meantime the man was full of hatred and goes in and does the worst massacre in history. we need to talk about the group overall. the term lone wolf, do we need that term anymore, does it actually fit the bill? >> well, i was among those who for years, five to seven years, maybe eight years have been arguing that a lone wolf is an expression on the surface may appear as, you know, expression.
5:38 am
you're never alone. you have to -- nicole: minimizes the problem, right? basically we had morgan ortegus talk about social media. >> that's true, a lone wolf means that he or she are completely isolated. there's no isolation among people who commit to either isis, al-qaeda or ideology, what's important to know at what person this time radicalized and became a jihadist. lauren: any difference that is are key or notable between this massacre and the ones we have seen in paris and brussels and a couple of years ago in the u.s. and boston at the marathon? >> it's the same kind of action and what isis or before that al-qaeda used to ask members is this, you perform the acts and
5:39 am
then we at the end of the day will consider you as part of us, even in the early process of these people radicalizing, if they're not members of the organization, they do as much as they can, the way they can and sometimes many five, six and seven or sometimes one person. nicole: i want to talk about sentiments from united states citizens and obviously watches the sound of people that were there, some are living in fear, some are so sad, some are completely outraged. overall when we talk about this, i worry about the surveillance and now specially ramadan and apparently you get more rewards. now are we in more dangerous moment this week because of this particular holiday? >> i don't think so. i think that when these terrorists, all the jihadist acquire target either in ramadan
5:40 am
or not in ramadan. the mothership, isis will take more advantage of the fact that they can recruit or mobilize or trigger feelings during their months, but by itself, in the eyes of jihadist is just another time of the year. lauren: do you think president obama must drop the political correctness and declare war specifically on radical islamic terrorism? >> well, that has been the position of most experts since 2009. i don't know if in the last three or four months of expected leadership to have administration he's going to do that. if he does, he will have to explain what has happened over the past seven months. this is a political decision. nicole: front and center for the next election. walid phares we appreciate your insight this morning. thanks, walid. >> thank you. lauren: in china shanghai
5:41 am
composite down more than 3%. in hong kong the hang seng down 2.6% and kospi in south korea down about 2%. a lot of people buying the yen. it's a safe haven. that currency shooting to new highs versus some of the other currencies. nicole: right. british exit vote ten days away and the federal market committee for us here at home this week. german dax now down 1.2 and dax 1.3%. lauren: looking at the futures here, s&p futures down 7. nicole: gold has been moving to the upside over the last 30 minutes or so. 11.20 higher. lauren: coming up a new beginning day in orlando after mass shooting in u.s. history's.
5:42 am
take a look, our community will heal, the headlines reads. we will have the latest on the shooting and the motive behind it when we come back. you're watching fbn:am, first look at morning markets and breaking. >> we are going to show what the good part of humanity and you cannot get your message and we will show you that we are a better community and a better america than this. x÷x÷
5:45 am
lauren: breaking news this morning, a gunman in packed gay nightclub in orlando killing at least 50 people and wounding at least 50 more. >> all you hear is gunshots, all you hear is gunshots. like i don't understand. lauren: a law enforcement official says 29-year-old omar mateen pledge allegiance to isis in a 911 call before the massacre. isis radio called omar mateen one of the soldiers of the caliphate in america. but investigators have not found evidence of a direct communication between mateen who
5:46 am
you're looking at on the screen and isis. nicole: omar ma tine's family was from afghanistan, he himself was born here in new york. the family moved to florida and ex-wife says he was mentally unstable, mentally ill. lauren: checking in on the market movement, dow futures down 71 points. nasdaq futures down 21. stocks in asia sold off sharply. nicole: fox news lelan is in orlando right near the pulse club. lelan. >> nicole, the a sad somber morning. many of the bodies still inside as the fbi continues its investigation. 21 of the victims have been identified and families notified. there are 29 families waking up not being able to get in touch
5:47 am
with their loved ones and not being told that they are no longer with us. you really understand the carnage specially when you see the bullet walls from hour's long gunfight. orlando swat had to ram one of their amorred cars through to try and rescue 30 hostages. >> no, it was rapid fires. he would change and put another ammunition and change and put another ammunition and i could just smell the ammo in the air. this isn't fireworks, we need to leave. >> omar mateen arrived ready for a gunfight and hundreds of rounds of ammunition engaged in orlando police officer at the front door of this club, he was there working security off duty, then mateen went inside the club
5:48 am
and continued shooting, during that time the 3 hours of this gunfight there were a number of 911 calls made from the victims but also from the terrorist himself pledging allegiance to isis. what we don't know is whether this attack was inspired by isis or actually directed by the terror group. >> this is clearly an act of terrorism, it's sickening, should make every american angry. whatever happened anywhere in our country -- >> now, isis has called for attacks on florida specifically now during the month of ramadan and has promised followers, jihadist extra rewards in heaven as provers as that sounds.
5:49 am
nicole, back to you. nicole: saddens and outrage. leland, thank you so much. lauren: we will have more on the latest development, what clues would investigators be looking on social media accounts and his electronic. we are also watching markets. we have dow futures down 71 points, nasdaq futures 21. you're watching fbn:am, first look at morning markets and breaking news. tough monday morning. >> no one could have predicted this, no one could have prepared for it. this could have happened anywhere. like a lighting it's more than a network and the cloud.

nicole: breaking news this morning, a gunman storming a packed gay nightclub in orlando killing at least 50 people and wounding at least 50 others. >> flying in and the people that were in the floor, you know when the body receive shots, that's how -- the last thing that i saw. so that's why we went to the restroom and i prayed for my life until the police came and saved us. nicole: law enforcement officials says 29-year-old omar mateen pledged allig teens isis
5:54 am
in a 911 call before the shooting. isis radio call omar mateen one of the soldiers of the caliphate in america that's been breaking news this hour. lauren: mateen's family was from afghanistan but he was born right here in new york and family later move today -- moved to florida. ex-wife says he was perhaps mentally ill. nicole: fed fund with zero chance of a rate hike. lauren: with us morgan ortegus, good morning to you, morgan. morgan: good morning. lauren: the 29-year-old omar mateen pledged allegiance isis in a 911 call before the massacre. isis radio calls mateen one of the soldiers of caliphate in america.
5:55 am
what are our thoughts on that specially that isis is calling him a soldier? >> you know, i think that this is -- we are going to continue to see isis to push these loan-wolf attacks, you talk about isis radio, they have something called abiyan, 24-hour station, if you're in mosul you can turn it to 92.5, isis has a very sophisticated media operation and they're pursuing people like this gunman, like paris and orlando through social media and propaganda videos n. the past past years 49-50 videos, propaganda videos encouraging people to either come fight for the caliphate in iraq and syria or encouraging them for the loan-wolf attacks like we have seen in paris, like we have seen in brussels. nicole: i wanted to ask you exactly that, san bernardo, brussels, now this in orlando.
5:56 am
the largest mass shooting of terrorist in the united states in our history. what is the change in strategy to fight against isis. we can't let this continue to happen. morgan: it's not a problem that can be easily solved. what we have seen al-qaeda, you remember back in the day we had these from osama ben laden, from that isis has grown sophisticated in their reach. we used to mention that you use today get radicalized from going to a mosque. now inch can go on facebook, twitter, telegram and see radicalized messages. if you look at somebody like the shooter, they can take these actions. so it's not an easy simple answer for how you fight them
5:57 am
but i think that we have to be realistic that isis has success es attacks are going to continue. lauren: the shooter was born right here in new york, spent his life in the united states, was living in florida, i mean, that's the realtor ror threat getting radicalized here in the u.s. morgan: absolutely, i'm grateful what homeland security and fbi officials do from happened. pretending that the threat doesn't exist or pretending this iraq and syria won't affect us is unfortunately not going to get rid of the threat. nicole: the muslim community
5:58 am
today, your thoughts on the muslims here in the united states and how this could affect them? morgan: you know, i've seen a lot of messages from muslim americans condemning the violence, condemning that isis doesn't speak for them and we saw a similar statement condemning isis. what gets to the heart of the matter are the messages that are preached in these mosques, in saudi arabia and throughout the world and africa and southeast asia, the muslim world needs to get control of the radical messages that are preached to young children and until the religion really takes a hard look at itself and propaganda in these mosques, this type of violence will continue. lauren: morgan, do we know if mateen traveled abroad, we know he was a security guard working for a british company, but that was here in the u.s. do we know anything about the travels? morgan: i think we will get more information in the coming days.
5:59 am
what the fbi and analysts will be doing is looking at his phone, computer, social media and trying to -- see, there's very valuable intelligence there because you can see -- you can connect dots, so to speak of who he was working with or communicating with or how that message reaches them and to go back full circle isis does hope and -- they want these type of loan-wolf attacks because this plays to pr agenda of saying, al-qaeda say the caliphate was in the future, isis says the caliphate is now. nicole: all right, morgan ortegus, intelligence expert as we continue to follow the breaking news this morning. there's also a brief and jeff block is there in orlando says there's a briefing not for reporters but the families at 8:00 a.m. this morning so we will listen for that as well.
6:00 am
lauren: sandra smith is in for maria bartiromo, good morning, sandra. sandra: terror in orlando, i'm sandra smith in for maria bartiromo. this morning it is monday june 13. the country from the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. at least 50 people dead and 53 others injured in the deadliest attacks on american oil 9/11. >> we know to say that this was an act of terror and hate. >> it was clearly an act of terrorism, it's sickening and should make every american angry. >> i hope they won't terrorize america, they won't terrorize floridans that we stand for and with all americanss. sandra: he reportedly pledged
