excitement with the rnc convention. here is the man himself lou dobbs. here is the man himself lou dobbs. good evening everybody. i can lou dobbs. there is a lot going on in the world tonight we have much to tell you about in the next hour. not only is the world reacting to the most recent terrorist attack in europe but at this moment a military queue is underway against the government of turkey. it remains unclear whether it has succeeded in driving the president of turkey out of the country. the turkish military claims the armed forces have fully seized control of the government. intense gunfire and explosions have been heard in the turkish capital.

jet fighters are flying all over the city. the city of almost 5 million people. all flights from is to pull out of turkey's airport have been canceled in social media has been shut down the military has shut down all of the bridges into and out of his temple. the state television network has been taken over by the army and is now off the air. tonight we will be joined by some of the leading figures in this country. there is as i said a lot to cover tonight. including the search for answers following the devastating deadliest terrorist attack last night in nice. we are learning more about the crazed terrorist who killed 84 people and wounded 200 mark when he plowed a semitruck in trailer into a crowd celebrating bastille day. there are reports he screamed

as he opened fire on police who tried to stop him. and in politics tonight donald trump has made it official his choice of governor mike pence for his vice president. trump had planned a press conference to announce that choice this morning. but he postponed the event because of the terrorist attack in nice. so for the first time the world has learned of a nominee choice of vice president on the my ticket through twitter. trump announcing mike pence on the ticket. >> i am pleased to announce that i had chosen governor mike pence as my vice presidential running mate news conference tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. governor pence tweeted this. >> honored to join and work tor. his tweet echoed in the first remarks to reporters.

issued a travel alert in that alert telling all american citizens in turkey to shelter in place to remain indoors. a curfew has been declared all across the country all of the airports have been shut down. the country is in effect under martial law. turkey's law enforcement saying they have seized control of the country has been fired has been heard outside military headquarters in the parliament ringed. fighter jets buzzing the capital. they are blocking two major bridges in his temple. the turkish parliament reportedly surrounded by tanks. there are no reports of casualties although there have been accounts of firing on the streets around the parliament. there has been some firing of weapons as they tried to cross the bridge in protest.

some people have been wounded. president erdogan reacted by saying the army chain of command has been violated but he remains turkey's president and remains commander in chief of the armed forces. the uprising carried out by a minority within the military. those who attempted this will pay a heavy price in the courts. it's unclear where president erdogan is. the national security council said president obama has been apprised of all of this. he is being appraised minute by minute of the unfolding situation in turkey and will continue to receive regular updates. turkey of course is the member of the nato a major eastern european ally of the united states as well. joining us from cleveland former pentagon official katie

mcfarland. this seemingly coming out of nowhere. president erdogan on vacation reportedly. the coup carried out. despite the protestations successfully. what do you know and give us your insight? >> i don't think this is over by a longshot. we will see what happens in the next day or two. this is the military that is taking over. it's a pro- american military. normally when there is a coup we think it's the military taking over at the elected leader. president erdogan was elected but slowly and surely he has been a grappling power away from the military and the parliament away from the court system to try to establish himself as a dictator and an authoritarian leader. the military coming in and

taking charge is in fact the move in a very important country because it sits at the crossroads between east and west. it's a nato ally and it is is also an essential but not very helpful member on the war on iraq look -- radicalism. charles: we know that president erdogan has moved closer to radicalism that you can't necessarily blame the man given the geographics. the culture and the makeup of turkey he is caught between every force. whether it is your report radicalism. it has anyone leading turkey. there is an immense set of challenges.

>> i have met him a number of times. he's a nasty piece of work. i think he is going to encourage the islamists who follow him including some of the more radical muslim types who follow him to rise up. he is caught between a lot of a rock and a hard place. he has not been a great american ally. while the white house and others are quietly weeding and looking at events this is not necessarily a bad thing for the united states national security interest. charles: and my that -- and while that might be the case this is a move and a maneuver but the united states but rather it may will be this is the consequence of russian planning and strategy.

>> president erdogan in turkey has have this love-hate relationship. right now they are sort of okay friends. who knows what is behind this curtain. i think what they will claim is that it was a cia plot. it's the go to position the any dictator around the world uses if he gets thrown out of power. they had been reluctant ally. they had thought a lot of terrorists are moving from isis through turkey passing through into europe and returning. so they have not been as much of an ally of ours as we would like them to be in the fight against radicalism. charles: nor have they been embraced fully by europe. it has been far from that and

>> we probably won't know the full answer to this for the next 12 to 24 hours. i'm sure we will notice by then. president erdogan when he was mayor back in 1998 he was jailed after word for religious intolerance. he then became president. he was instrumental at the nine access in iraq he freedom. he has purged the military and jailed a lot of officers. it has been stable for all of turkey. when it was overthrown. in the political party it came through. part of their motto sounds

like muslim terrorist. it's almost a mirror image of it. the politics of this again the united states looks to be caught utterly and set completely surprised and perhaps they will be blamed but they will surely be blamed for not anticipating what was developing in turkey. of obama once thought he was going to have a great friend. it hasn't turned out that way. obama is always the last to find out. and the influence in turkey is important. one of the army divisions that was going to be a part of the invasion of iraq was gonna come down through the north.

and they blocked that. i think we had two bases still in turkey. i'm not sure they are both air bases. charles: it is fully operational. >> until a year ago this month nato was not allowed to fly missions against isis and we built the thing. i've been there done that. what got them around and america's failure to get rid of that. that is the only reason he is back working with us. he's afraid of the russians. and that is one of the reasons either way. he started to get religion after his fighter jet pilot.

lou: breaking news in turkey and attempted military coup because we do not know whether it has fully succeeded we know that it has succeeded certainly in large part. we are joined by laura welch. she is and is temple. what can you tell us about what is going on is temple. it is about three times one of the largest cities in the world about 15 million people. what is a situation there? >> around 10:00 p.m. we were

seen reports that the military have taken over both of the bridges and anyone going on to those. 15million is a very modest estimate. some people believe it is between 16 and $18 million. on top of that. and then people i knew were reporting that they were seen at 16th. and then it has unraveled from there. we saw soldiers take over the state television network. right now there is a woman just repeating that military statement over and over. we have heard from the prime minister but not on state media. we have heard them on a private media over the phone. they've not said where they are. lou: and that has been

broadcast to the population that is being denied as i understand it. this point social media has been shut down and the only thing to be certain i understand you correctly is the only message is a repeated statement from the military that has declared its in control of in incorrupt. -- in ankara. there are reports right now that the chief of staff is being held hostage in a military office. certainly it was rumored and it has not been in the press for the past six days which is highly unusual. he is almost always there making a public speech he has been in monetarist a south west town on the mediterranean.

i actually have a family relation on a boat there they said that navy have surrounded the area and is not letting any boats come in or out so it is a lot of things in flux and a lot of rumors. i'm telling you what i believe in probably the most founded backs. some things i have seen with my own eyes and right now he was calling in on his phone. he said for them to go into the streets. we had have them in his temple. what they will do from there i will don't know. they are gathering on the bridges and they had been shot at lou: they are in control now of the city. even as some people are following erdogan's call to go to the streets. the military is there or are they there in small numbers or

if it has been choreographed to show the obama administration is utterly maladroit and adept in foreign policy. >> well it reminds every voter that you cannot always anticipate what major event in the world or in the united states domestically could shape an election so here we have on a friday a nato member state embroiled in this crisis with a military coup and erdogan, i could have told a number of times i've spoken to politicians in opposition to erdogan. he is someone we should look at with extreme cynicism and skepticism. he is not a good guy. he is inching closer and closer toward islamic authoritarianism but if the military were to take over what does that say about the future of that country in the democracy that they have set up for themselves in turkey? a very scary night and i think it focuses on foreign-policy and

a campaign that has not exactly been dominated by those issues. lou: not dominated but certainly donald trump has been the first to say that nato is not achieving the aims that are critical to the national interest this time and there needs to be a rebalancing, a study participation by their allies not pretend participation. his comments, his statements of foreign-policy whether he it is satisfying to his detractors and opponents is really of no matter because he's the only one talking about substandard issues and foreign-policy, the events of the last 24 hours bear him out. >> one of the things we have to keep in mind is that hillary clinton has been talking about her experience in foreign-policy and all of that and that is right up here. lou: this is the first of that foreign-policy. >> while people may say she's better foreign-policy and he's better at national security at

the end of the day people are going to start saying how did we get here? these are the policies and this is the world under the current administration. whose fault it isn't not going to blame anyone but that's what the voters are are thinking. you have to carefully consider who you are going to choose because the world seem so uncertain. people are really afraid. who are we going to trust in this moment? we have two candidates that are very untrustworthy. hillary is less than donald trump soho are people going to trust now? lou: what he think about this latest, guy? >> if you are an average voter you are sitting here and you turn on your tv and you see it terrorist attack on the heals of a number of major attacks here including orlando. you see a people in turkey and you might say hillary clinton and former secretary of state she can go into that mode and start dropping names. she knows the players and she is well informed but then you say

we know both in ankara the nation's capital and a stumble its largest city. president erdogan has been forced to use his iphone space time app from an undisclosed location to broadcast messages. he is beseeching the turk is published to resist the coup. turkey's national intelligence spokesman claims that the coup attempt has been quote repelled. nato's chief has called for full respect for turkey's democratic institutions and constitution. witnesses have reported to have witnessed a large blast that has been heard in istanbul. our own reporting and conversations with two people there, ambassador breathe in a stumble and laura wells correspondent for grn radio, oval radio. both saying much the same thing

what we are hearing right now is obviously the early hours of the coup attempt but one that sounds to this juncture it has been markedly successful. your thoughts? >> i don't think it's over. lou: i understand it's not over. i said at this point it's been successful and the military is in control. your thoughts and i should have been more specific about the imams where they will come down in this and how influential will they be in the politics of the street? >> actually that's a really good point lou. lou you are the best. the military is secular. they want to have a democracy. they do not want to have a religious autocracy of the mullahs in charge. erdogan has moved increasingly

turned -- toward the mullahs toward an authoritarian islamist country. imams, we have yet to hear from them. will they take to the streets and what will they do? friday is their holy day. will they go to the mosque and what will they say? this will unwind but i look at the whole middle east and the whole middle east is on fire whether in saudi arabia or yemen or libya and much of europe is on fire. it's the threat of radical islam as you pointed out a decade ago that this was going to start and grow and it has and it's a tragedy for the world. lou: pastor it's great to have you here. a couple of quick things. first obviously your thoughts in the appointment this election by donald trump of mike pence and the degree to which you may have chimed in with the presumptive nominee to encourage his selection and secondly your thoughts about what it is we are

now reporting obviously an attempt by the military to roll back what has become an extraordinarily sick terry and islam must government on the part of the erdogan now. >> look, i believe mike pence is an effective governor. he is a committed christian and a strong pro-life advocate and while it's true that some evangelicals and i include myself in this were disappointed last year when pence caved on a religiously rebuild. we are not disappointed not to vote for hillary clinton so i believe that mike dems will be a great choice for donald trump and as far as what's going on in turkey right now i think this crisis once again illustrates the need for strong national international leadership which is why this election lou is so crucial. i believe donald trump will bring that leadership to our nation into our world. lou: ktvz events of the last 24 to 36 hours seem to have been

lou: to bring up to date as best we can what's going on in turkey right now, the military to has been to this point successful but has each of our political experts have said these are early hours and there is much conflict remaining in the hours and days and nights ahead. there is some contradiction about how successful the coup has been. the primary contradiction coming from turkey's prime minister who says the situation is largely under control and back to normal but not saying that over state run television or broadcast.

a state newly stingy -- agency in ankara has been hit by a bomb. we also have reports that the parliament has been surrounded by tanks and soldiers. joining us tonight former s.e.a.l. team six-liter the man who killed osama bin laden rob o'neil. rob is a "fox news" contributor and a great american. it's great to have you on the show. let me start first with your thoughts. you have been in turkey and you have worked with the turkish military and their special forces i presume. >> yes. lou: what do you think of the military and the likelihood of their success? >> they have base a lot of their selection training to become special forces navy s.e.a.l. training that we did so we have a good relationship with them for it i have worked with their snipers quite a bit pre-9/11 but i'm from a year with the way they think. they have a conscription method where each mail serves three months to a year so it's a

promilitary society and the man men i worked with were great. lou: it's hard to imagine why every society that values its citizenry would not be promilitary. as we want to think, one would think as we are trying to figure out what is going on here and it's frustrating for all of us because there is very limited reporting out of there, is it your judgment that they are also a society that is ready to return to a secular government? >> they consider themselves especially the military cards meant a secular past and a founding member of the united nations. they are worried that erdogan is leaning towards the islamist style, not a pro-isis but pro-was long human rights violations have gone up against women and atrocities, honor killings because they are believing more in the sharia than they are in normal society.

lou: the military making very clear the onset of the coup that erdogan's of authoritarian moves of later what provokes them and they have to return that government to a secular path. >> art is saying i should say with the elected government that the military is going against that and it proves our foreign-policy isn't working well. there has been a lot of chaos in the middle east in the past few years and this is no exception. the military won't see any repercussions for whatever they do against erdogan. lou: to your point this is a confounded foreign policy that has been pursued by their secretary kerry or whether it's the white house taking sides with the government that is in its most recent actions supported by radical islam and islamic state. >> it's happening in yemen and there's no leadership. lou: it was great have you with
