maria: is great to talk with you. we will see you tomorrow night. we have the speeches coming up. live from the 2016 republican national convention in cleveland, ohio. this is lou dobbs tonight. lou: good evening everyone. we are live from the huntington convention center here in cleveland for the opening night of the republican national convention and it has already been quite an eventful day here at the rnc. i never trump faction was shot down by people saying that we want trump. they make the chance. the supporters of loyal namely
7:01 pm
former virginia attorney general and ted cruz friend mike lee. they tried to place that into nomination from the floor. those opposed should say no. [applause] it brought considerable drama to an important late night for donald trump. trump himself will be speaking to introduce his wife melania trump tonight. they take center stage and
7:02 pm
with the spotlight. trump said his wife will speak with her love of country as an immigrant from slovenia. other big name speakers tonight will be hearing from in the coming hours senator jeff sessions, senator joni ernst, former new york mayor rudy giuliani and the net aim of this convention is "make america safe again". and it is a theme that certainly resonates with the law enforcement officers our men and women in blue following the fatal shooting of three police officers. i charge there. the highest rank police officer charged in the death of freddie great found out his fate today, trump and running mate running as the a law and order candidate. trump diametrically opposed to the current president they are
7:03 pm
part of the problem. those are one of the demands of the black lives matter agitators. we will be taking all of that up here tonight. joining us now former political director great america pack strategist and fox news contributor ed rollins. thank you all for being here. it's quite a day it has been. we go back to 1976 for anything approximating this. it was a decision that the republican said. that was a very serious fight. neither ford or reagan had the delegates at the end of the day. but ford one by 117 votes. this is trump's nomination. this is about changing the rules for the future.
7:04 pm
that's obviously where trump is not elected. that's what this is about today. it is this a romney lead direction in the party? this looks like a utah driven insurrection. >> i think it was more than ted cruz people. romney is irrelevant at this point in time. lou: i think it is short sighted. even though they might have long-term plans in mind it is harmful for the party any of the insight does not look good for the republicans. lou: at the same time it is a big hint getting bigger because of donald trump. the democrats when they have the sort of event they talk about the democratic party being themselves the
7:05 pm
republican party seems to be fighting out a little bit more about who they are is it so a dire? >> i don't think so. i think the real issue for tonight will be setting up the contrast for the republicans on public safety. with the democrats i mean. the democrats as i understand it there convention plants they will have the parents and mothers particularly of men who were shot and killed by police officers in this environment we have a real contrast here is a rich party is more -- which party is more pro- police. lou: hillary clinton speaking to the naacp and she's gonna bring down the full force of law against law-enforcement in this country.
7:06 pm
you can draw a more stark contrast between two parties and two nominees than on the issue of law and order. >> richard nixon in 1988 and ronald reagan launched his career that same cycle on law and order. if rudy giuliani gives the right speech tonight which i think he will and trump follows that force with military men they stand and fight to protect us and think that is a good place to be. lou: donald trump tonight introducing melania trump that is unheard of as well donald trump likes to break precedent and forge new ground ahead. >> number one it's a new way of doing things and i like that he's doing the jet only thing to do.
7:07 pm
see them together is a nice thing. i think that is really important for the american people to see. i also think he likes surprising people. he likes to shake things up and do things like we haven't seen before. look for a lot more surprises. lou: and the tone of the convention itself we've heard a lot of discussion part of the republican national committee and the national leadership, the tone of things right now is full steam ahead, it is donald trump's convention and ted cruz you are history into the delegates that insist on being "never trump" we have a white house to win. there has been numerous occasions where events seem to line up perfectly donald trump's skills and his position. when you look at what is happening in the last week
7:08 pm
from the attack in france and then the turkey insurrection that failed and then of course the police shootings in dallas in baton rouge. you have events all of which play into that strength the status quo is failing in the change is desired by everyone. lou: and the failure within the status quo. obviously president obama's diplomatic of it. at the same time the republicans whether it is john kasich the governor of the state in which this great convention is being held they are petulant and have it seemingly decided to accelerate the in relevance. >> it would be more irrelevant if they did not be here.
7:09 pm
at the end of the day here john kasich can be important to us and certainly the bush family has big money. this is trump's game and they have to make a judgment on whether he can lead the country effectively. part of that is choosing him to run the campaign. he is operated with great effectiveness. some symbols here and there you can argue about but overall he has taken command of the organization to the level that some head liked but dramatically from what it was in at the convention he has big sickly taken the fight to that never traversed and those who would be an obstacle to the mission. >> he has brought a lot of structure to the campaign.
7:10 pm
you can see that there is more discipline and more rigor around the campaign but he hasn't lost the message which is so important. he is lean and efficient. he still has a small campaign. one of the things that is so positive about donald trump as is he's able to do things evenly than they had been done before. if you change that it would be a totally different game he is still able to be disciplined. lou: and naming mike pence his running mate he has accommodated the party he has accommodated the factions including the ted cruz factions who went up against him today he has been the compromiser that every lady -- everyone within the party wanted. your judgment about where we go from here with his style of management and the way in which he is driving the campaign. >> if you try to imagine for a second that jeb bush was a nominee i know it's a little difficult at this point he might have chosen mike pence
7:11 pm
as his vice presidential running mate. i think he was a good solid choice. >> can you think of an excuse for john kasich not to be here. he lost and he's not happy. jeb bush. trump humiliated them. part of it is that they are really sore at him personally. i think they should be here if you're ever in the state you speak for the party lou: do you think they will ever speak for the party again. >> i think a lot of things are happening. i think you did. i would've gone to las vegas and bet on it. he has run a good convention. the critical thing is can they put together a campaign moving forward because the convention is very important they are
7:12 pm
kennett defined term. winning this thing. for hitting sitting here we've lost by two or three points we will know it didn't work. and it it might not had worked as a result of what likely ted cruz, on the bush family and the k-6 conspired to do. this is really bad form. it's horrible politics and it makes a mockery out of their relationship to the party. >> i don't know what their endgame is. what else can people assume. if you want to fight for your party fight within your party. you do not fight within your party. you don't give up and walk away. is not the right thing to do.
7:13 pm
they've used other networks that are unfavorable to trump to attack him. he does speak to a deep and abiding decision will trash and we will hurt hillary. >> this has to be the last word trump has tried to bring unity in a compromise. he is reaching out he is trying very hard to unify is it going to be accelerated in your judgment tonight. when they step up and start taking the message forward to the american people this is
7:14 pm
really about him and his vision for america. unlike most conventions which i've been to a lot of them this one will be of real measurement will be trump's party. the american people will be watching for that. that is a very heavy burden i'm sure he will be up for it. lou: we continue in just a moment. cap next donald trump says a lack of leadership led to the murders of three police officers in louisiana. we take up that issue next. we are live in cleveland, ohio.
