7:00 pm
i think that family is worth at least, well, i won't put a number on it, but i think they demonstrate that donald trump is a winner. they're winners and they're precisely the family and their family values that we would like in the white house. i di you tomorrow morning with . eastern. you have the next two hours. lou: wonderful job, as always. thank you so much. i am lou dobbs. we are live from the quicken loans arena from cleveland, for day three of the republican national convention. i promise you, a long list of the highest profile speakers yet, set to take the stage yet tonight. they'll be talking about tonight's theme, and it is a theme that will resonate in the hearts of most americans. how to make america first again?
7:01 pm
among those speaking, radio talk show host laura ingraham, former trump rivals, senators marco rubio and senator ted cruz, also newt gingrich and trump's son eric joins us as well tonight on the stage from the q arena. but the big speech of the night is the now official vice presidential nominee, governor mike pence of indiana. joining me now former reagan white house political director, great america pac strategist, fox news contributor, ed rollins, pulitzer prize-winning columnist for the "new york post," fox news contributor, michael goodwin, and political communications strategist, easy for me to say, strategist lee carter. great to have you here. >> nice to be here. >> thank you. lou: ed, start with the big suspense. what is senator ted cruz do and say tonight? >> i think what ted cruz wants to do is do like ronald reagan
7:02 pm
did in '76. give the speech that everybody wishes everybody else had given. to be perfectly honest, this is a traditional convention. nothing overly exciting. the kids, the trump kids have been sort of the best speak, of the night. you had the past. this is kind of the future. have you mike pence and you got obviously cruz, you have people who may be future candidates four years from now or eight years from now, they're going head-to-head. obviously, you have the rubio tape. the cruz speech is the interesting one everyone is waiting for. i think he's going to give a great speech, i don't think he's a great speaker, i don't think he will give a ronald reagan kind of speech, i will be shocked if he didn't support the ticket. lou: michael goodwin, most people thought he was coming here to, if you would, to remove any idea that he was going to remain the skunk in the room, senator cruz, before coming here, he says he's going
7:03 pm
to run in 2020 no matter whether president trump at that time likes it or not. what do you make of this attitude and demeanor that the man who's been whipped in all but eight contests is doing? what is he thinking? >> well, i think, lou, that he probably came with some faint hopes there would be a revolution on the floor, and that he would be the fallback candidate. that's what he was running for, for the better part of three or four months, there that he would be the fallback, if trump faltered. and that was crushed with ease that first night, with the rules committee, over the weekend, and then the first day. i think that he's going to
7:04 pm
try to thread a needle here that is all about him. he's preserving himself, just like john kasich, and i think the legions of the selfish are remarkable that this is not about principle ultimately, this is about self. lou: it is. it's really incredible that we're watching that play out here tonight. if indeed that does turn out to be senator cruz's choice, of course. lee, how in the world would he expect to remain a republican if he won't endorse the nominee? how does he go against every value? i mean, our culture, good sportsmanship, you play hard, you shake hands, you move ahead. he's violating that. he's violating the tradition of the party, and what other business but politics can you break your word as he has done to this point, and still stay in business?
7:05 pm
>> there is a real arrogance to ted cruz and the way he's behaving right now. i look at it as hubris in many ways. if he does not say the right thing, it's going to be the fall of him. if he goes and whether he endorses trump directly as others have, or indirectly as paul ryan did last night, he has the opportunity to rally the troops. he has the opportunity to be the bigger man. he has the opportunity to change our minds about who he is. i'm not sure what he's going to do. if he goes the wrong way, it's going to be the end of him. lou: and ed, to that point, do you expect that these, that these delegates will boo ted cruz if he chooses not to honor their votes, the delegates who represent millions of votes in this country, for donald trump? >> well, i think first of all, have you to understand, he's got a large segment of his own delegates. there will be good applause for
7:06 pm
him. he held his team together, the professional team. i think the critical thing here is there are no bronze medals or silver medals in politics. there's a gold medal, you win, you go on. you lose, you should go home, both he and kasich think they are in play, and i think to a certain extent, tonight is the hard truth, he's not going to end up in the cabinet. he's going to be a senator. run for election in two years. if he wants to run for president, it's his prerogative. to a certain extent, this is the last impression a nation has of him for the foreseeable future. lou: you know, i say this as a texas-born fellow who really has to say it. i mean, i don't know how the people in texas are going to react to a senator who breaks his word and then puts self ahead of party and in the views of millions of people, the majority of those who voted in
7:07 pm
the primary election ahead of country. michael, your thoughts. >> well, look, in fact, ronald reagan did not endorse gerald ford in 1976. he gave that great speech at the end of the convention, and many, many delegates were left saying we nominated the wrong man, and events proved they have. that ronald reagan, had he been the candidate in '76 almost certainly would have beaten jimmy carter. but the revolution that came later came despite his not endorsing gerald ford, and so it really sets the stage for a different kind of republican party, and i suspect that's what cruz and jeb bush and kasich and all of those others who were defeated and who refuse to endorse, they're basically saying, well, maybe trump will lose and we'll be set up for the next time. we won't go down with the ship, we'll be in the position of
7:08 pm
saying, i told you so. i think that can work. it worked for reagan, but i don't think it worked for everybody, and i think reagan was special, and i think these guys are making a mistake, frankly. >> and lee carter, you get the last word here. what are your thoughts as we prepare to begin the evening officially in the arena? is cruz as important in the emphasis that we're giving him here, and what is his capacity to actually harm the republican party's chances of victory? >> you know, i think that pence is going to do a really good job at bringing us all together. if you look at cruz, rubio, jeb, kasich, i think they demonstrated there is a past to the republicans. the people have spoken, these are the people we want. we want donald trump. people that are different. it's a new day in the party. they either have to lay out a
7:09 pm
vision that's compelling or go home and realize they are in the past. it's time to get with the times or not. but if they don't do it the right way, they're going to be forgotten. lou: lee carter, ed rollins, michael goodwin, thank you all. appreciate it. >> thank you. lou: coming to you live from the quicken loans arena in cleveland, where it is night three of the republican national convention. it's about to get away in about 20 minutes, under way. last night a big moment for donald trump becoming officially the party's standard bearer. my next guests have the honor of seconding trump's nomination last night. >> the stakes in this election cannot be overstated. we will either make america great again or we will travel down a path to a third obama term! donald trump is not merely a candidate. donald trump is a movement! i have the honor of seconding

[laughter] >> i'm not alone any longer! >> no you're not. the company is building, and that's wonderful. you've got to, first of all, feel great vindication and satisfaction in what has occurred. >> and america. you're right, but it is the future of america. lou: well, the future of america is being putting in the broad outlines here the first three nights. tomorrow night we're going to get the vision. i want to go back to what your expectations are. most people don't understand why ted cruz is even talking, because he hasn't endorsed. he has broken his word. everyone insisted that donald trump sign a pledge, and he did so. all of those folks, whether jeb answer to their own conscience
7:12 pm
on that. donald trump is going to win big. lou: that's good, congressman. you know what? this ought to be more than conscience, ought to be consequence. what happens if he does not live up to the principles? >> not the party putting them up there, donald trump is putting him up there. if trump stands up in the party unity and never hillary, i'm okay with that. lou: he does not need to endorse. >> all right. lou: because that would be called pandering. if he is -- you republicans have come too far with donald trump to start complicating things.
7:13 pm
he was able to get a lot of delegates. lou: the ratio is about 3:1. >> we're going to get a rousing round of applause for ted cruz conservatives. what a beautiful night. we have governor mike pence. the real conservative stood up for what you call tea party issues before there was a tea party. that's our vice presidential pick. and i think the cruz folks understand that donald trump is choices, they said he's a real conservative. lou: i get a kick out of the number of people i was asking in the arena, asking a number of people what they wanted to hear him say? you could tell who the cruz supporters were, and the trump supporters, those who weren't
