7:00 pm
eastern, right here, fox business network. lou: you got it, maria. we'll all be joining you. thanks so much. maria bartiromo. we're live from the quicken loans arena here in cleveland. this is the final night of the republican national convention, and tonight's theme is make america one again with speeches that will focus on uniting this party and this country. the most anticipated speech, of course, this evening will be that of donald j. trump himself as he formally accepts the republican nomination for president. earlier today trump did a walk-through of this arena. he tested out the microphones and the new podium. trump was there with his daughter, ivanka. she will be introducing her father tonight. there's been no shortage of drama, of course, here at the republican national convention. former trump rival, senator ted cruz, booed roundly after he

and that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack heidi, that i'm going to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and maligning my father. lou: his defiance and his defensiveness telling you how deep the blow is, he realizes, against the prospects of his career. former reagan white house political director, great america pat strategist and fox news be contributor ed rollins and senior adviser and pollster to the trump campaign, kelly ann conway, join me now. let me start if i may, kelly ann, with you. your reaction to the generosity of the nominee toward his rivals and the response of ted cruz. >> unfortunate, and the grass roots are watching, independents are watching. they appreciate people who don't act like politicians, lou.
7:03 pm
and donald trump has been incredibly gracious. if you remember melania trump's statement monday night, she said there were 16 other worthy competitors, and they deserve our gratitude and our respect. that is really gracious coming from the future first lady. and donald trump was gracious twice yesterday. he also refused to accept the resignation of the woman who helped melania trump write her speech and made an honest mistake. there are lots of activists today or, many donors disappointed in ted cruz. you know what, lou? you can't be a little bit pregnant. if you're going to come to donald trump's convention in his house, you have to show some respect. lou: and, indeed, he was a guest directly of donald trump. ed, your thoughts. you've seen a few of these. you've seen some bad moments as well as historic great moments. what do you expect here tonight from donald trump? >> i expect him to energize this base. i think to a certain extent it was a stumble last night. it shouldn't have happened. the person who lost out who gave
7:04 pm
a magnificent speech, a wonderful man, was pence. it kind of stepped on the pence story, but he'll make it up. tonight is all about donald trump. donald trump will energize this country. he has to make people look at him like i'm not an entertainer, i'm a survivor, but more important, i'm a president, i'm a leader, and i'm going to take this country in a direction that it wants to go. already he's tied in ohio, a state that always is the key state for us, and i think to a certain extent without having anywhere near the resources, what have you, he's really in this race. he hits a home run tonight, which i think he will, he rises to the occasion, he's going to own this town, this state, this country. lou: one of the things that i think i should point out last night sitting here as we are next to the floor, right next to all of delegates here, there was in the upper pars and reaches -- parts and reaches of this arena as well as here on the floor, there was tremendous response
7:05 pm
for mike pence. his speech may have been stepped on a bit by the drama and the disappointing drama of ted cruz, disappointing primarily for those who supported ted cruz and his behavior that caught them unaware. but this, this place erupted with such support for mike pence, and when donald trump started walking toward his seat, he ultimately joined his kids, and then showed up to welcome and to congratulate governor pence, i mean, this place, this is definitely trump country now. and even greater or, i believe, as a result of what happened last night. what do you think, ed? >> well, i mean, i think, obviously, we wish it hadn't happened. cruz will wish it hadn't happened about a month from now when he still has people unhappy with him. this is a unique situation where you have a democrat convention
7:06 pm
right on top of this. we have to have momentum. this is a nonstop sprint. no more marathon, this is a sprint the rest of the way, and my sense is you can't say he can't win anymore. he's got to get money, resources, build a different structure, but all the pieces are in place for him to be the next president of the united states. >> and, lou, i predict this weekend the mainstream media will be saying that donald trump got no bounce out of his convention. look, his numbers are flat. the numbers to look at are the ones ed just mentioned. look at these swing state polls where hillary clinton is lucky if she's at 45% after sp millions, tens of millions of dollars and 66,000 ads. there will be a bounce out of here because you'll look at the tightening in these statewide polls. the other thing, lou, to your point, tomorrow morning you wake up and it is unequivocal that this was donald trump's convention, a family affair, a running mate all in for him as his supportive number two. you go to philadelphia next week, the more popular, more dynamic, more charismatic

[laughter] no one -- that's right. donald trump owns charisma. this is his convention. he's the leader. this is a crescendo up to him. but look at who's come before him, his wife, his four adult children, his running mate, people who ran against him and chris christie, newt gingrich, rick perry. it's been, i think it's been an incredible convention. people -- [inaudible] are not paying attention to what's going on in that hall. lou: and i've run into a number of them in that hall. ed rollins, kelly ann conway, thank you both. it's an exciting night, and we will be covering it all.
7:08 pm
thank you so much for helping us in that effort. donald trump is set to close out the republican national convention. he will deliver his acceptance speech this evening. trump's speech is so important, and it's expected to focus on the convention themes this week. make america safe, make america work, make america first and make america one. well, my guest now was given the honor of officially nominating donald trump to be the republican nominee for president earlier this week. >> one man, donald trump, was not intimidated -- [cheers and applause] he would not be silenced!
