>> paul ryan baimed out on him. i'm going to just campaign for congress. i think he was effective at going after his base. which is what he needed to do to shore that up. the problem is the base is not going to get him elected president. she was more effective at reaching out to undecided voters. objectively he did quite badly. he answered the video thing saying locker room banter, the locker room from assault you in 1958. and he continued to make claims that were untrue. he said he would lock up his oh own end if he won. he admitted to paying no federal taxes. kennedy: he didn'ted a not paying no federal tax. but he said he used the existing

laws to not pay federal n tax. >> he loomed over her like a sniffling ghost of rick lazio. kennedy: i don't think he understood the importance of positioning and optics it was a wildly entertaining debate. everyone is so we are so disgusted. as i said at the top of the show. but i'm not voting for either of these people so it's wildly entertaining for me. >> it was actually helpful and clarifying for those of us in your camp. they both did a good job of explaining to the american people why the other one shouldn't be president. donald trump had a couple good arguments about obamacare and hillary's policies in the middle east. and she did a good jofn explaining why his temperament is out of bounds for anyone who wants to be president.

then neither of them argued why trump's policies would be any good. >> one thing he did better on was taxes. that was the one time he understood there were people watching him and he addressed the camera and said i will lower your taxes. >> even with taxes, i think he missed the opportunity of growing the tent wider with the tax conversation. i do think he could have said life by example. these are the areas that need to be changed to benefit in some say so their dollars go farther the taxes they are paying and they keep some of that money in their pockets. then reaching out to independent votedders and say you may be judging me on the way i did this, and let me tell you why and what happens in the real business world. >> if you are funning the government, what are you getting except for more bureaucracy that doesn't keep you safe and

kennedy: political analysts say trump's performs answer last night may not have fixed his political issues, but may have stopped some of the bleeding. >> this was locker room talk. i'm not proud of it. i apologized my family, i apologized to the american people. certainly i'm'proud of it. but this is locker room talk. kennedy: will trump's apology and explanation that it was simply locker room talk play with voters or will the tape haunted him on election day? joining us is boris epstein. so, the people that i saw, the strum' supporters, they were happy with the candidate's supporters.

how do you think he did on the lock sister room talk tape issue. >> i was one of them who was extremely happy with the wait debate went pool he apologized friday, and he apologized again yesterday. his wife was there. the economy, national security, jobs, make sure we are protected. you can find on that specific point in the debate and overall i thought it was a home run. kennedy: trump supporters have been very upset with members of the republican party, particularly members of the senate who are polling their endorsements. but what will it take for people to be acceptable for people to leave his camp. >> the way i think about it. what will it take to get these people back in the fold. we want them all to vote for our candidates. 90% of republican voters are for donald trump.

even after the comments friday that percentage holds the same. folks in d.c., we want their support, but we are focused on the voters. kennedy: it shows hillary clinton, according to the nbc follow, has an 11-point lead. who do you think leaked the tape? >> i don't know who leaked the tame and that's not what i'm thinking about. kennedy: are you thinking about possible bit other leaks? >> i'm thinking about our message, making sure isis is stopped. on jobs, 100,000 jobs lost. that's what i'm focused on. as far as the poll goes, that was taken right after the revelations.

so i expect the poll to jump right back. ken were pence clearly, tim kaine in the vice presidential debate and donald trump was so vastly improved you could make the case he wouldn't second presidential debate. and as trump tried to pivot to isis and saying this was locker room talk, these were words, but what i'm really going do is be tough on isis. but then he's got an issue with him saying one thing and the vice president saying another. somewhat mike pence was talking about was making sure syria is protected. ken rrm he was talking about meeting russian provocation with american strength. donald trump said i disagree with that. i haven't talked to mike pence. that's a startling revelation.

women from 2005. according to the latest "wall street journal" poll. hillary clinton has an 11-point lead, beating him in a four-way race. 46-35%. that poll was taken after his grabbed them by the horns comment. before last night' debate. so will his performance budge the needle? the party panel is back. so steven i'll start with you. what do you think the debate does to polling? and, you know, you said during the break that if this whole access hollywood tape had not leaked it would have been a much worse week for hillary clinton. >> i think the debate doesn't move the needle at all. the polling you are talking about is one poll taken at a

had been able to get that into the debate, think how much stickier the issue of the emails would be. if he had been able to pivot. now he has the capability to do that. it gets more difficult for him. >> to harris' point about the leaks, people are immune to the leaks. and stuff is going to come out. unless she has an each that explicitly says i blew it on benghazi and those four people are dead because me, or something of equal nature, i don't think anything else that comes out from wikileaks hurts her as tremendously. >> i think we would have seen it by now. this was not the only poll that has come out.

last newsen had a poll that changed the spread by points. what this allowed. the cowardly republicans, and i'm sorry for being redundant here, to wake up and say we have an excuse. republican opinion is going in this direction. john mccain realized after all this time maybe donald trump is vulgar. when that happened, you can't undo that thing. and so -- harris: it was never genuine. if you had a republican or democratic nominee and the parties were not going to support the nominees, it would be didn't. they were never genuine in their support of him. will we see another momentum shift?

earlier and he was right when he said of his republican party, 2016 is a race to the bottom and we can win it. the republican hope is they can drag hillary clinton out. you saw donald trump in the debate endeavor to do just that. instead of being contrite and saying i learned lessons as i traveled on the campaign trail and getting to know the heart of america. he said you think i'm disgusting? well, her husband is a racist. kennedy: let's talk about the house of representatives. do you think the house is in play and this was either a panic move on the part of paul ryan or is he just look ahead top 2020 with that wily mike pence who might be doing the same thing? >> i think in terms of whether the house is at risk, we need a little te. we saw a poll from the "wall street journal" that was taken over the weekend.

it shows a huge spread opening up in what we call the generic ballot, control of the house of representatives and the senate. and we found out that democrats jumped up 5 or 6 points. is that true and does that hold true wednesday, thursday? i would tell people to chill out a little bit. but right not you realization for the republican party is this is not shaping up to be right now the state of the race is that it's not close. and nothing happened at the debate to change that. i would say in a normal year you have might say, and he's running out of time to do it. but this year you would say huge swings are potentially possible and maybe they will be able to destroy hillary clinton. kennedy: maybe. i think they will need some sort of outside influence. i don't think we have seen the last of these outliers. we don't know what else is

display of american weakness. the russians have exploited, the iranians have exploited. the assault regime has exploited, leading to the chaos we see in syria and to a certain extent iraq. unraveling the mess obama has made is a very complex, but it requires more than anything else, a display of american strength and resolve. and to do that you have to do it in many places at the same time. in eastern europe, where the russians are threatening the baltic republic still trying to undermine the ukraine and elsewhere. in the middle east where they penetrated to a greater degree than any point in the last 50 years, and elsewhere around the world where countries see american decline. this is not a simple question of how to deal with russia in the middle east. this is a much broader question, and unfortunately a much more

difficult one to turn around. kennedy: we learned that in the 80s with russia and afghanistan. you have people in the united states saying it seems like a bad idea to go to war with russia. thank god a lot of nuclear missiles and putin seems a little bit unhinged. it seems you need a dual strategy. you need something in the short term which allows you to clean up the mess in syria, but then it seems like you also have asking for a shift in philosophical doctrine. what do you do first and how do you do it. >> the question is how do you deter people that have capabilities that can wreak havoc with yourself. the answer is you don't do it through weakness. putin sees weakness and he's pushing back. he's changed the facts on the ground.

he has built a russian air base in syria. that's not something to reverse overnight. but when they say don't you dare fly air missions that might strike at syrian government positions when there are russians there, i think that's precisely when you put missions in the air, if our aim is as president obama said to overthrow the assad regime that threaten syrian government positions. putin will push as long as he sees weakness. if we could see one demonstration of strength by the obama administration or its successor, putin would back down. that's how it works. kennedy: we'll see. hopefully it won't get to that point. we do have a new president who will ascend to the empirical throne.
