resources to expand the russian investigation just days before he was fired. but you will not be astonished to learn the new york times, the washington post, among others, misrepresented the truth. catherine herridge with our report. >> the acting fbi director testified the russia's case is on track and confidence remains strong in his old boss. >> director comey enjoyed broad support within the fbi. and still does to this day. i can confidential tell you that the majority, the vast majority of fbi employees enjoyed a deep and positive connection to director comey. >> testifying alongside the leadership at the national security threats hearing, the fbi's acting director andrew mccabe was pressed on the bureau. but his answer critics the message the white house seems

to be putting out over the last couple of days. >> i've heard from a large number of individuals that work at the fbi that said that they're very happy with the president's decision. >> in a rare admission, make abe said morale was down but only after comey recommended against criminal charges for hillary clinton and her team for mishandling classified information. >> there were folks within our agency who were frustrated with the outcome of the hillary clinton case and some of those folks were very vocal about those concerns. >> on the russia probe and its targets. >> the dismissal mr. comey acin any way impeded, interrupted, stopped, or negatively impacted any of the work, any investigation, or any on going at the federal bureau of investigation? >> simply put, sir, you cannot stop the men and women of the fbi from doing the right thing, protecting the american people, and upholding the constitution. >> the committee's chair

focused on the president's conversation. >> did you ever hear director comey tell the president he was not part of an investigation. >> sir, i cannot comment with any conversations he may have had with the president. >> why comey wasn't at the hearing. >> for many people including myself, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that the president's decision to remove director comey was related to this investigation. and that is truly unacceptable. >> and the commander-in-chief was singled out. >> president trump's actions this week cost us an opportunity to get at the truth at least for today. >> his critics say mcabe is partisan because his wife took $700,000 for a 2015 state run for democrats. mccabe's testimony also debunked widespread media reports that comey wanted more help for the russia case just before getting axed. >> i strongly believe that the russia investigation is adequately resourced. >> and on call for special

prosecutor. >> the fbi will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely. >> do you need somebody to take this away from you and somebody else to do it? >> no, sir. >> the senate committee leadership met privately with the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein telling reporters after, the meeting had been for a while. the three met forward so that the congressional and federal probes would not jeopardize each other. lou. lou: katherine, thank you very much. we should also point out that andrew mccabe was a long time friend of john podesta, the chairman of the hillary clinton campaign. our first guest tonight reports before the president fired comey, comby had told congress was not a target of the fbi investigation. joining me now is sarah carter, national security and war correspondent for circa news. sarah, good to have you with us. and this is as new charges

spring up saying that it's just improper, that comey would have said such a thing to the president trying to cast doubt that he actually did say that to the president. you have validation for those statements he made. >> yes. and, you know, for months, for months, we have been reporting this. i mean, several months ago, john sullivan and i broke the story that actually restreeled that neither trump nor anyone in his immediate circle was part of an investigation into the collusion with russia. now, there were exattenuating circumstances to this. what we discovered today is that grassley as well as senator feinstein validated this. there are so many myths out there, lou, that are not reality, and i think that's what's happening with this is that people want these myths and these rumors to go away that trump somehow, president trump was in collusion with the russians or any of his top

aids. lou: let me put it forward here just as straight as i possibly can. the president of the united states right now is a target. but he is a target of the largest, most expansive, venomous, disinformation campaign i have ever seen conducted against any political official, let alone any president in our history. >> this is -- yes, this is an intensification of targeting president trump when we saw it today that a number of stories yesterday were not accurate. those stories were not accurate. they were debunked by mcabe, and they were debunked by others. so i think what the president here is we've got to look at this. if the president is not under an investigation, if what they both say is true, then his firing of comey has nothing to do with him being under investigation. because he's not under investigation. it has to do with the way former director comey handled the situation.

and even if director comey personally told donald trump as he suggests that he was not under investigation, that's also a problem because the director is supposed to remain impartial. he's not supposed to talk about investigations at all. and we know from going all the way back to last year that he kept coming in and out of the public limelight making comments about these investigations. and it was like he wanted to have his cake and eat it too. and that just does not work in washington. lou: does not work in washington. nothing seems to work so well in washington as the personal attacks, the politics of personal destruction. it's instructive i think to go back to a statement made by senator chuck schumer or crying chuck as the president has labeled him. on january 3rd, and let's put this up, if we may. the exact quote. senator schumer warning the president "let me tell you. you take on the intelligence

community, they have six ways from sunday at getting back to you." extraordinary the warning that -- and the consequences, frankly, persist. and they really do -- it's a strange thing that's happening in the national left-wing media i think, sarah. we're hearing lots of -- everyone stirs up things and wants to talk about what the president should have done, should not have done, will do, won't do. when point of fact, what we're witnessing is the left-wing media that is attacking with a unprecedented verasity with a man without any facts, without any purpose other than partisan. . >> when you look at what happened, lou, i don't think it's just about the media. it's about a group of people that have a particular objective, and they consistently push a propaganda message or disinformation, or i would call it -- in the

military, they call it psyops. psychological operation. to try to push a story out that is not validated or not true. and if you just look at the facts here, you know that one, right now as far as everyone knows, and this includes statements coming from grassley, coming from senator feinstein, as well as the president, president trump is not under investigation from collusion with media. and yet that persists out there all the time. and you look at what happened to lieutenant general michael flynn when he was the national security adviser. so we softening ourselves these questions. are we going to continue to propagate this? because i think that feeds into the russia narrative more than anything else. lou: i can assure you, we are not going to propagate that. it's just unimaginable. the standards that have presented in the craft of journalism but also when we

the washington post and others, those outlets reporting this week that comey requested more resources from the justice department to investigate collusion between the trump campaign and russia. not so. the acting director fbi andrew mccabe contradicted that reporting today. >> can you confirm that that request was, in fact, made? >> i cannot confirm that request is made. we don't typically request resources for an individual case. and as i mentioned, i strongly believe that the russia investigation is adequately resourced. lou: at what point does a news outlet gain a reputation for repeatedly stating mistruths? untruths? misrepresenting? lying about the president of the united states. at what point is there a consequence? our next guest says president

trump was right to remove james comey as director of the fbi. he sends out an. serving under president bush and obama. chris, let's start with -- this is a remarkable statement that there was going to be -- they had to -- they request -- comey had requested additional resources just days before he was fired by the president. this nonsense that persists and turns into a campaign of disinformation by what were once considered reliable news organizations. >> yeah. the sources of that story were in a nine-hour frenzy because they thought they had a smoking gun, which proves to be a lie. but, lou, look. those news outlets, the familiar ones are integrated components of the dnc capitol

hill. they're not news source. they're part of the attack plan on trump. they're fully integrated with each other, so nobody should be surprised that nbc. lou: i don't think, by the way, anybody watching this broadcast is surprised by any of it. so don't worry about surprise. the shock quotient here is a very high, high threshold. >> yeah. the other thing happening, lou, is the entire washington chattering class has been so out of shape about this story. remember, folks, the law. the constitution says the president could fire comey for any reason. they weren't consulted. they weren't talked to ahead of time. president trump didn't phone a member of the senate. lou: did you hear senator warner today? who does he think he is? he was supposed to be the reliable sedated, careful, cautious, establishment figure along with senator bur and the rest of the intelligence

committee. my gosh, pulling forth, sentence by sentence, not paragraph by paragraph. it's outrageous the things he was saying today. >> think about it. this is the same democratic party that for 67 years laughed at you if you were concerned about russian involvement in the united states. you were a punch line. but now, they're obsessed with russia influencing the election. what they don't care about, lou, is the real foreign influence on our election. unfettered illegal immigration. people getting registered to vote. noncitizen voting, the james comey fbi didn't prosecute once for eight years. lou: and to support your point and distorting by millions of residents in california, illinois, massachusetts, florida are creating congressional districts where none should exist and overrepresentation in those states that bring in illegal immigrants and

underrepresentation in states that follow the law. >> yeah. if democrats really cared about the election integrity, they would worry about people like they nominated for congress like windy rosen who voted twice for president. the democrat nominee and the first marilyn congressional district. this fbi under comey never prosecuted her. she committed federal felonies. over and over again. lou: let's go through the prosecution. the justice department's fbi famously involved in "fast and furious." famously going to resolve with their agents standing in the ruins of the benghazi consulate. we never saw the reports from that, did you? i've never seen the conclusion. i've never seen a single person endited as a result of an fbi investigation into those big scandal of the obama years. all eight of those years. >> yeah. let's talk about the rationale-motivated hate crimes against americans of

all races and creeds that the fbi refused to investigate under comey and obama. we can go on and on about selective law enforcement that endangered american election integrity, endangered americans' lives. yet these democrats are phantom russian threat. lou: let me ask one question as we conclude here, chris. who was it at the dnc that told the fbi that they could not come into the dnc, even as the fbi is alerting them to the fact that the russians have invaded the united states, just at least one piece of it. and it was the servers of the democratic national committee and not a single person that the fbi. why they accepted that rejection from the servers and the offices of the dnc. there are a lot of questions here. you would think there would be a clamor for special investigators by senator crying chuck schumer. but no. christian, good to see you.

lou: a few thoughts on james comey andrew mccabe and hillary clinton. andrew mccabe good friends with john podesta married to a democratic candidate, an unsuccessful democratic candidate testifying about the fbi's decision or at least j. comey's decision not to the reaction within the agency. >> there are folks within our agency who were frustrated with the outcome of the hillary clinton case and some of those folks were very vocal about this concern. lou: and for good reason. the department of justice inspector general is right now reviewing whether mccabe should have recused himself from that investigation. this after mccabe failed to

disclose donations that his wife jill received for her 2015 virginia state senate run as a democratic candidate. those $700,000 in donations facilitated by none other than alia governor terry mccollum of virginia. in fact he failed to file the necessary disclosures until three days after comey recommended charges in the clinton case last july against those charges. and now with comey gone and tight ties to the clintons and who has something of an aversion to paperwork obviously serving as acting director of the very agency that was repelled by the democratic national committee, even as the fbi warned them that the russians had invaded their servers. the fbi veterans already warning that the clinton investigation could be reopened because there are so many unanswered questions
