[♪] kennedy: as i mentioned, the trump administration is looking to privatized parts of our infrastructure in order to save money and get things fixed. but can private companies succeed where government has failed? joining us is michigan congressman justin amash. how are you, sir? let's talk about the budget. i north lindsey grams pant john mccains as well as the deblasios

and clintons of the world are up in arms and upset. are there bright spots for those who love freedom? >> sure, there are bright spots. having mick mulvaney there helps. he's a fiscal conservative. we served with him in the house liberty and the house freedom caucus. i'm sure he's dweeg can to find those places to find where the federal government is overreaching. kennedy: one thing he talked about is an important point. when bill deblasio says this budget will make children sick and they will die because it doesn't spend enough money on social programs, doesn't it also do a great disservice to future generations? general now will have -- children now will have to pay for the out of control spending implicit in a bill that's trim around the edges? >> there is a lot of hyperbole

out there. the real problem going forward. we are making the next generation pay for the things we want today. that's not way the framers designed our system of government. the states are supposed on handling more and theview private sector is supposed to be handling more. the federal government is supposed to have a limited role and we are way past what the framers intended. the. kennedy: i want to talk about privatization. when we talk about a trillion dollars in infrastructure spending. we can't afford to borrow that much money and you can't afford to tax people any more to fund those projects. don't they have to be privatized in and how do you go about doing that? >> some of it has to be privatized. we can sell federal assets.

kennedy: do you like the idea of selling rest stops and airports? >> there is a lot the federal government could be sell together private sector or leave to the state governments to handle. we have too much going on at the federal level. but it depends on the details. when it comes to a trillion dollars of infrastructure spending, i think there is likely a lot of stuff that conservatives and libertarians are not going to like that we'll find wasteful. that doesn't mean the federal government doesn't have some role in infrastructure. but it sounds like a massive overreach and i don't want to be taxing people for that stuff. kennedy: when the big sell is chuck schumer will like the, that's problematic for me. you have done a good job handle something of these town halls that have gone hours long where some of your colleagues have been eaten alive.

so what is the secret to explaining healthcare that is so confusion, people writing the legislation have no idea what it means. >> i think it's a matter of being calm when you explain the it's about having respect fuls conversations with people. the truth is most of my colleagues do not know what the bill did before we voted on it. they didn't know how to explain it yes or know about why they were for or against it. it took leadership a while to figure out even for them to figure out what the bill actually did. kennedy: over in britain, investigators are poring over evidence in man days deadly bombing from manchester. they say it's clear the prime

the lawyer who has defended trump in real estate and fraud cases. but this new case is more high profile than anything he has done before. what does it say to you about his choice of lawyers? that loyalty is great than some sort of knowledge? >> he has to have trust and the ability to have somebody who can speak back to him and have an honest discussion. kasowitz is the first in a team of people who defend the president. some of these investigations go back to private citizen donald trump before he got elected. ken were including in trump tower where there were two russian banks that were the subject of fisa memos.

john brennan, a person i don't necessarily trust. we talk about the politicization of the deep state and various intelligence organizations. you can point to him first and foremost. but what does his testimony say to you? what do you think brennan's feeling is about the ties between russia and the trump campaign. >> he didn't seem to have a smoking gun. what i found out in his testimony that was most interesting was driving home the point how incompetent he thinks trump is to be trusted with intelligence. there is a way to have it done through channels where things aren't lost in translation. trump is messing things up in translation. that was a valued point that brennan made in the midst of all the other stuff indicating there was untoward associations between trump's campaign and the

russians. >> i guess there is a difference between untoward association because russians will screw with anyone. they will do whatever they can to influence people and get to know people in power to move the needle in their direction. favorably for them. there is a big difference between that and screwing around with voting machines and having some sort of a noticeable measurable impact on the election. that's what i'm looking for. basically data. show me some proof that russia did something here and that had the effect over here. >> i don't think it had a measurable effect. whether there is collusion or not collusion. by the many got to the point where there is not too many people who feel that way. there is obviously collusion. people are saying there is no collusion. it's a witch hunt. and everybody should be

them no longer obsolete. his visit has more significance given the devastating terrorist attack in manchester. russia would love nothing more than for the nato alliance to fall apart. joining me now, ambassador john bolton. john: i'm glad he has come to this position. i think nato is the most effective political-military alliance in human history. but nato has a lot of flaws. its decision-making mek nivments have proven ineffective as allies don't necessarily listen to decisions from the top commanders. and it's the case as president

trump said that nato members aren't living up to the commitment they themselves made to spend 2% of gnp on defense. kennedy: does what happened in manchester start a necessary conversation about how the organization deals with terror? john: we should have had this conversation long before. the real coordination that is necessary first is more intelligence sharing among the allies. it's difficult to share the intelligence with some. afghanistan helped defeat the taliban and al qaeda. and it could join with us in the fight against isis. i would hope they would agree to that. kennedy: doesn't it seem a little bit late considering how

far along some countries are in this fight? what would it take for nato to effectively come together and do something the united states cannot do alone. john: it would require leadership. that's one west problems the trump administration faces after 8 years of a vacuum under president obama. perhaps this meeting the president is attending can be a useful start. kennedy: we talked about some questionable alliances around the globe. saudi arabia, there are a lot of people, and some liberty-minded republicans who have questions and issues with the saudi arms deal. what do you say to people like rand paul who put forth legislation condemning that sale without congressional approval? john: it's not untypical to have a congressional vote on an arms sale of that size.

i'm a liberty-loving republican and i hope the saudis put these weapons to good use, especially in yemen. i wish them god speed on that. kennedy: there is a huge conflict between saudi arabia and yemen, and it doesn't just focus on isis. one of the issues i have is after 9/11 i don't trust saudi arabia to begin with. but how do we make sure those good weapons don't end up in bad hand and create the next isis. john: that's always the risk in any transaction in parts of the world. we went through close consultation with israel to make sure these weapons if they are delivered did not affect israel's qualitative evening. i assume israel is comfortable

with it. but in the arab monarchies, the oil-producing state, they are vulnerable from isisn and iran. kennedy: these are oil-rich nations and we are dependent on oil as globe. why don't they build their own damn weapons? john: they are going to pay for these weapons and that's great. you wouldn't want to give them away. kennedy: we have done that in so many other countries with security forces we trained in iraq and afghanistan. that's throwing good money after bad. i hope we learn some of the lessons from the past. one good thing i will say about the arms deal is they are paying for it. john: right, what's the complaint? kennedy: may i ask you a

there, i have a lot of friends who served there. i talked to a good friends of mine who is coming back from deployment and thinking about the loss we had there, having been there multiple times. even there saying we lost that thing. the writing was on the wall one of the s. troops were pulling back. what this requires is tough leadership decisions. that's the debate, what does winning look like? sending more troops over there to prevent the taliban from taking over, that's great, what is the long-term plan. >> the ultimate goal and ultimate question, you don't want to nation build. and how many proxy wars are we supposed to fight in afghanistan. it's such a time suck and energy suck. it just sucks. >> for those serving there, it's more than just people's friends,
