general. choosing it seems to me a peculiar way to express concerns about the sanctions, calling it a trade war. >> clearly what the trump administration has done indeed is changed the relationship between the united states and russia from one of essentially a combining is when obama is doing with them as they annexed crimea and moved into syria, bombing the syrian moderate and we did nothing about it. this is a policy of confrontation based on good evidence in terms of what russia is clearly up to obviously to include iran and north korea as well. >> as we look at all that is going on with north korea and

their intent to continue testing icbms and testing nuclear weapons, this has to end somewhere, and right now it doesn't look like it will end well, particularly for the north koreans. >> north korea made the calculation that they have to have nuclear-tipped icbms to put the american people at risk to deter the united states from ever conducting a regime change in north korea. that's a departure from the past where it was understood having weaponed point at south korea would be enough deterrence. the on thered calculation they make that is interesting also. they are saying that any preemptive attack or military action taken by the united states against any capability north korea has is an act of war and they would release all the

military capability they have on south korea. that checkmates the united states and the united states will essentially accept nuclear-tipped icbms. the problem with that calculation is they are dealing with a trump administration that is totally different than their predecessors and they may be making a miscalculation. lou: we go back to 1957 to the era of mutual assured destruction. now it's draw a line, if you will, a red line, but there has to be some way to stop that. obviously it's unacceptable to put any u.s. citizen in harm's way when it comes to kim jong-un. >> i totally agree with that assessment. the trump administration despite

the rhetoric will still work with china and put sanctions on china more than what they have done in the past. and i think the president is close to making a decision on this. they will continue to increase that pressure and leverage. obviously they have to put it on fast forward because literally the clock is running out as we had frustrated leaks out of the intelligence service and how close north korea is to a nuclear-tipped icbm. lou: the policy followed to this point by the obama administration in particular and the first six months of this administration, the idea that these people can get this ready in the next year, that is an icbm capable of delivering a north korean warhead to a u.s. target is deeply troubling. everything the american people were told until a couple months ago is it was a far broader and

lou: president trump touting the incredible economic performance of the economy since he became president. >> the stock market hit an all-time record high today over 22,000. we picked up substantially $4 trillion in net worth in terms of our country, our stocks, our companies. we have a growth rate, a gdp that has bench higher than anybody anticipated. jobs are pouring back into the country. factories and plants are coming back into the country. we are going to start making product in the country again. lou: i love the way he looked to his left and right about the growth rate. the obama administration and their clever economists saying we are going to have to get used to the new normal of 1%.

that obviously has been put to the lie by his presidency within the first 6 months of taking office. my next guest says the economy has turned around and donald trump should get the credit. joining me is historian and economist doug wead. i love the president looking again, a lot better than anything obama ever saw. >> it's so funny. you remember on election night when the stock market started tanking and everybody was saying, see, see, this is a bad president. look at this. lou: you know how many weeks it took for the business press in this country to get over themselves? they wouldn't pay attention to the indexes. that's when we knew there would be a problem with the national

country, foreign investment and bringing jobs back. hell, yes, he's bringing jabs back and he's bringing plants back and producers. and i truly believe in some order of the next year he's going to repatriate capital from u.s. multi-nationals who socked all that money away overseas rather than putting it to work in the home economy. >> senior citizens look at their 401ks. what a change? lou: these attacks that have been unrelenting on the president, they sort of abated this week after the appointment of general john kelly to be his chief of staff. that seems to be at least in its early -- i acknowledge -- but that seems to be a seminal moment for this presidency.

it seems to have made a profound change in the tone of the -- if you will, the atmospherics of the white house itself. >> it does. i see something rather ominous in that that i haven't heard anybody else talk about. i had the privilege of work under james barrack and john sununu and andy card, leon anetta i didn't work under. but all these great chiefs of staff necessity history are great politicians. reince priebus was a great politician. he was with trump for a year, not six months. he was with him a year ago when they looked in florida and they had one office open to hillary clinton's 51. and he turned it around and trump won the election. that said, trump brought in a general as his chief of staff. that tells me trump realizes his

presidency will be judged not just by healthcare or tax reform but by what naps north korea. i see something happening with kelly in that position. lou: i just think it's much broader. john kelly brings a certain left and gravitas to the office and a highly developed sense as everyone acknowledges discipline being a four-star marine general, discipline would be in his dna. but i think the man is a pretty good politician to get to where he is, and frankly the politics he had to contend with is some of the best and brightest in the officer corps. i think the competition is significantly more daunting in the u.s. military amongst the
