a limp ambiguous statement. then he denounced nazis. he could have walked away from the table but lost it all in his bizarre press conference. >> i have condemned neo-nazis and many different groups. but not all of those people were neo-nazis. not all of those people were white supremacists. kennedy: just stop at nazis. they are the worst from their horrific history. they require extra condemnation. that's a lay-up. equating nazis with other had it groups is like equating head colds with other viruses. guess who liked his press conference yesterday? almost no one except for nazis.

s when nazis like what you are saying, you are saying something wrong. with the president's odd mood swings, you wonder who is getting to him. been fisheries of the psychological policy disconnect will be the legion of people in both parties lined up to run against him in 2020. there are plenty of people ready to exploit this chapter to occupy the white house after one shaky term. that's where we are getting. i'm glad you are hear. let's get into it. i'm "kennedy." kennedy: the president disbanded two of his economic work groups after half a dozen ceos resigned. tweeting, rather than putting

pressure on the business people of the forums, i'm ending both. thank you all. is it worth the political and economic cost for the president or anybody else to make the moral equivalency he did in yesterday's press conference. let's talk about where the president went wrong. you saw a couple of things as everyone did who sat there open mouthed watching this. no one was shocked, no one was surprised. but what was your reaction? >> i mean shock and surprise? the part of the press conference that went off the rails for me was not when he was talking will the alt-left. i assume he's talking about antifa. they are a violent hate group. but where he went off the rails

is when he was asked about the alt-right and pretended he didn't know what it was. then suggested there were some fine people marching friday night in the tiki torch white supremacist parade and struggles with naming one person who was marching friday night. tuesday he goes and reopens the entire book because i guess' misdemeanor at the media -- he's miffed at the hide yeah. kennedy: what was the difference between monday and tuesday. i understand and every president does this. they come out with the wrong statement and wrong tone. they place too much blame or not enough. then the good ones have the sense to make right and make a bigger statement which the

president did monday. something happened. someone got to him and either said this part of your base is so important you cannot risk tail nateing them. why can't someone else stand in front of that person and say no, the rational thing to doyles just walk away. >> i think the big problem is president trump sees himself as someone who fights back and rewards his friends. people are nice to him are treated with kid gloves and those who are not nice to him are treated with the trum trump. he doesn't want to alienate them. he's the president of the united states. he's not the president of the alt-right. attempting to distinguish and carve away the alt-right from

nazis and it's incorrect. but to use the label alt-right, this march was richard spencer and david duke. for him to lumped the alt-right in with those people and separate them out -- kennedy: jason kessler released a statement blaming the entire thing on the charlottesville municipal government and police department there. >> antifa has a habit of invading protests then making the police look like fools. so the police need to step up their presence at these rallies. but the altd left came ready to fight and antifa came ready to fight. condemning ideology should be

easy it's important for the president to condemn the alt-right. because there are no rumors antifa supports him. wouldn't this be a good time to say you people are not with me, you are gross. and he sort of did that monday an seemed to walk it back yesterday. kennedy: what makes it even more tragic is a young woman lost her life as did two police choppers circling overhead keeping an eye on the protests. you had heather heyer's mom who made this statement. you make a point to look at it and say to yourself what can i do to make a difference. and that's how you are going to make any child's death worthwhile. kennedy: she is trying to make sure her child didn't die in

vain. i can't imagine the pain that woman is going through and the strength she must muster to make a statement like that. hopefully that's something the president can channel and tap into and calm everyone down. >> the mother has been incredibly open minded about this whole thing. she praised president trump for his response. then he came out and walked back that response. it undercuts his popularity and makes him look like he's a fellow traveler with bad people. from a moral point of view there is no justification of soft peddling anything with regard to these people who showed up friday night and saturday. kennedy: let your enemies be the idiots. let them be the ones to act up. but absolutely condemn the people who are responsible for the deaths here.

ben shapiro, i appreciate your time and insight. kennedy: as i mentioned the president defended two of his economic working groups. and he's getting major pushback from both sides of the aisle. editor of the caylee caller katie frates is here and matt welch. and the jamie weinstein show podcast. welcome, everyone. so let's talk about this, jamie. there have been calls now for the president's cabinet to resign because of the statements he made in the press conference yesterday. where does this go from here? >> i find those calls insane. i don't think i would be more comfortable with secretary of

defense joe the plumber versus general mattis. even with his economic council, everyone is pushing them to resign and a lot of them did. i think it's actually good people are there saying, president trump we probably shouldn't have a trade war with the entire world. it probably would be bad for us. i think we should have good people around donald trump to try to get him away from his worst impulses. kennedy: what does it signal to you, the disbanding of these councils. >> he's running away from bad headlines. which is difficult if you are donald trump. kennedy: i guess we are not talking about north korea. >> he did talk about it this morning and praised himself and the north korean leader for not having a nuclear war over guam. so that worked out well for everybody. i'm happy economic councils get

canceled. i wish they would get cancelled in every administration. i don't think it's good to have our ceos sitting next to people with all the power. but when is this going to cross over into a body that actually matters? hopefully all the bad people in his administration will resign on principle. kennedy: i saw the press conference, i watched the fallout. the story was starting to grow it seemed like he saved it. i was watching that and i thought bannon was next to go. >> the way you pit, ben shapiro when you say who got in his way to cause the second press conference. the only time was under the influence of his own advisers was on the monday thing. it was only when he interjected off the script he said both sides are at fault here. you saw the real donald trump

came through. by all reporting he was relieved and felt wonderful after his press conference which says a lot about his fundamental character. kennedy: you say that's a fumble you will have a hard time recovering from. he's an egomaniac who couldn't put that away for one moment to say heather heyer died at the hands of a racist. he had to make her mother's statement about himself. he had to call out the hide yeah as fake news. kennedy: there is a big group of people who still like his ideas. but people are seeing more of a disconnect. they see number his performance in the press conference and they have a hard time defending that. i'm talking about supporters of the president who want his

agenda to succeed. but at what point is there such a disconnect those voters peel off in large numbers? >> i think there is a base that will stick with him no matter what. they will always fight the other team. but the interesting point is why did donald trump switch from tuesday to monday. he always judges himself in relation to the media. he was told if he changed what he said before they will love him. he went against every instinct he has. so he saw that earned him nothing with the media by reading that hostage statement. so he went back in reverse. the double down. kennedy: what did that get him? >> it got him the presidency. kennedy: maybe that works. maybe those of us who are sceptical, maybe we are all fools. but i agree with a lot of the people who support him.

i want him to succeed. i want the -- i want the economy to grow. i want less regulation. but i look at we did yesterday and i'm having a hard time seeing it. >> part of his ideology he shares with the alt-right protesters. we are going to lose our sense of who we are as a nation if we let the unelected euro crats tell us what to do. but that's part of the reason. ben says he should reject that ideology. it's hard because he shares some of that ideology. kennedy: it's interesting with jamie said. sit comes down to where he's getting approval and his intuition keeps telling him to go back to that supportive base. first off, call to tear down

con federal statues were taken down across the city of baltimore. will the push to remove these monuments continue until every last one is gone, and is that the best solution in joining me to break it down, lieutenant colonel ralph peters. welcome back to the show. >> i hope we can bring some light on to this subject amid the madness. kennedy: i hope you can bring some historical perspective. that's essential and necessary right now. slavery one of the most of painful and formative and fundamental aspects of this country many people have been trying to remedy for centuries now is the best way to remedy that to remove some of these confederate statues. >> i wanted to stick to facts.

i have no sympathy whatsoever with the creeps in the kkk tore neo-nazis whatsoever. but a problem we have is both extremes left and right don't know their history. they don't understand the civil war, its complexity. the civil war at its core the issue was slavery. but that doesn't mean everybody who fought for the south fought for slavery or believed in it. you even have to go to individuals and motivations. jefferson davis, president of the confederacy, to me he was a tra --was a traitor and the stae doesn't belong anywhere. but you said there is a distinction to be made between stonewall jackson and robert e. lee and jefferson davis. >> men who led the confederate

armies were almost unanimously opposed to secession. robert e. lee was the leading light of the u.s. army on the eve of war and they strongly opposed secession. but american identities were different in the 19th century. nationalism hadn't caught on to a great extent. but in the south they were. they would say i'm a virginian, i'm a georgian, i'm a tarheel. agricultural issues, tariff issues, that was slavery at the core. you want to take down the statues of stonewall jackson? really? this is a man who against great opposition in lexington virginia a decade before the war. he insisted on opening sunday schools for free blacks and slaves. he violated virginia law by

teaching blacks to read. twice he bought slaves. why? because the slaves both times begged jackson to buy them because they knew he was a good christian man and they didn't want to be sold south. the first one, a male he immediately turned loose. the second was a female in the era of no social nets became part of jackson's family and didn't want to be free. these were heroic men on their own terms torn between their loyalty for the union and their states and families. most of not all decided they had to go with their states and families. what's the problem here? when you attack those statues of those men who oppose secession, who were not pro slavery. you are playing into the hands of the alt-right and the kkk and neo-nazis. you are driving law abiding sane middle class, working class

whites toward the farther right because you are trying to would be their heritage. they romanticized that heritage to a certain degree. the good jobs have gone away, and they don't have much left to be proud of. they have that flag in the back of their pickup truck. how much more do we humiliate them in the name of social justice? where does it stop? kennedy: what about some of robert e. lee's ancestors who say you can put the statues in a museum and that's an appropriate historical place for them and perhaps not in public squares. >> it's not a clear-cut question. it's tough. i can see beth side. my concern really is rewriting history. my other world in my professional military life was being a soviet scholar. studying dictatorships around the world which i still do.

than i'm an america and i'm a human being. humans need to be in small communities. and those things can be and usually are healthy, and they are certainly necessary. kennedy: what's the difference between a healthy community and a small community of nazis? >> my argument is the nazi community of white nationalists is what grows up in the absence of an identity. if you look around and you are not proud of your hometown, if you are from nowhereville/kentucky. you are not religious like the driver of that car in charlottesville. you didn't go to college and didn't have a father. you say i know i'm an american and i'm a white guy. when it's a majority identity and invented out of ideology. you say i'm a greek orthodox.

i'm an irish guy, here is the music we listen to. i'm a black guy living in d.c. then the organic community have an ability to be both closely bound together and accepting of others. the more ideological ones are likely to go to war with one another. kennedy: that's the critical part. the acceptance of other people's identities. that's what's so divisive, the uttering saying your culture is different from mine and therefore you are bad. >> i'm in the d.c. suburbs in a strong parish and we are surrounded by orthodox jewish synagogues. when our irish catholic families meet their catholic families, we

say you guys do everything so different. we see you walking to service, we are driving everywhere. we have limb later but also have vast differences. the strength and comfort within our own community gives us the ability to reach out to and work with other communities. a lot of the problem that leads to -- if you look at the nazis, part of that sprung up in germany from german men who were told you can't be proud to be german. trump voters were the most of likely when asked their ancestry to just say american. i think it leads to extremism and the sort of thing we saw in charlottesville. kennedy: it's an interesting way to look at this and we'll post your column on our facebook

housing. they tried absolutely everything except making it easier for people to buy, sell and manage their own property. that is insane. we can't allow that to happen. there have been studies done on this. a blue ribbon study in the state of california looked at this and said by far the greatest problem creating the affordable housing problem is in l.a., making it more difficult for people to buy homes. politics say let's throw our money on it. kennedy: i can't wait to get my check for $75,000 from los angeles county and i can't wait to see what the neighbors say. who is going to enforce it? who will walk around and say those steps aren't up to code. we'll have to kick that gypsy

family out. >> l.a. politicians may be dumb but their donors aren't. why not have a relative say they are homeless and you are going to bring them in for the $50,000 or $75,000. let's say a 19-year-old son in college. he doesn't have a home, he's homeless. i think someone will game the system and make a lot of money. this is ripe for corruption. >> not just corruption. i wouldn't necessarily trust a homeless person or gaggle of people to be on my property and not canvas my house and break in and steal things then frolic on their way. if it's not corruption, it will be someone gets hurt. kennedy: do you get to pick the homeless people? what if she is a woman perhaps living by herself.

has to be broken up. >> this is a republican version of micromanaging the economy. amazon survives by trade. they created hundreds of millions of jobs. you could publish a book now because of amazon. to come down to them, this is the difference between economic power and political power. kennedy: are these shrewd moves bezos has knead or is he signing his economic death warrant. >> i don't want to be hyperbolic, threatening business:men for exercising their first amendment rights, that's akin to putin. that's akin to chavez and fascist dictatorships where free speech really isn't free.

whatever jeff bezos wants to do with "the washington post," that's what makes free speech free. kennedy: do you think would have as much problem with amazon with bezos weren't in charge of the "post" by owning it which has been editorially tough on the president and publishing some of the most of damaging leaks? >> the president's job is to protect people's rights and freedoms to live their own lives. not to comments on this type of state or this type of company. it affects the stock market. every time the president tweets about a company or stock investors take note. whether it's bezos or merck -- kennedy: do you have hot stock tips? >> no. sorry. kennedy: come on. all right.
