gi gillead. >> a great pipeline going forward. david: prayers to those in the gulf coast. cashin' in starts right now. lauren: president trump making his second visit to the gulf coast in less than a week. he'll be shaking a lot of hands. you can bet the mainstream media won't be giving him a fair shake. take a look how they covered his visit on tuesday. accusing him of focusing on himself, showing no empathy, someone here says, instead of criticizing in the wake of disaster, the media should be trying to bring the country together. well, hi, everybody, i'm lauren simonetti, welcome to cashin' in. rachel, juan williams, larry glasier and scott martin. welcome everybody, to the show. >> thank you. lauren: the media still attacking president trump, even as america deals with the tragedy in texas and louisiana.
7:31 am
what do you make of that? >> look, when you have a tragedy of this proportion, what you want from your president is competence and you want authenticity. not everybody is a hugger, not everybody is an emoter and i think that part of why we're having the hug counting, how many hugs he gave or didn't give, why we have silly discussions whether the first lady can wear sill stilettos on the way to air force one. they're handling this well. i think there were plans in the media for stories how he dropped the ball and mishandled his first big crisis. this is a huge flood, a huge natural disaster, and things are going as well as you could hope for. lauren: rachel, you say the word huge, they criticized him, the mainstream media, you know, for saying the storm was epic and horrific. what other words would you use to describe it? it seems so weird. juan, let me bring it in here. i personally don't care about melania's heels and questioning
7:32 am
the fact that the media asked a lot of questions about the $1 million personal donation, that the president was making to the victims. what's wrong with that or why question it so much? >> because the president has a history of saying that he's making donations to philanthropic efforts only to later be found out as it was during the 2016 campaign, that some of the money did not go, in facts, lots of the maintain didn't go anywhere but in his personal businesses and into, like i think a six-foot tall painting of himself in mar-a-lago. and people are checking, given his history, is he really making a donation. i think the bigger issue here is you know what? you think back to president bush standing thereafter 9/11 and saying, we hear you. letting people understand the importance of the government, the government is going to be their protector and i think that's why you look at obama after charleston and the shooting down there, again, singing amazing grace. i think it's easy to say, we don't want somebody who is less
7:33 am
than competent and we have to give praise to the government at least so far doing a good job, but often times the role of the president, the leader of our country, shows that he's connected and has heart and feeling. you can say it's the mean old media, guess what? you know what? he didn't go and touch, much less hug any of the people directly impacted by this terrible flood. lauren: maybe he'll do that today. he responded very quickly on friday, hurricane harvey struck, on tuesday he was down there. so the response time was very quick right now. i have heard the rallying call, scott. i have. he is instilling confidence, we're going to help you, going to get you your money and get you aid. are you hearing that from the president? >> yeah, lauren, texas, we're with you. remember, donald trump is not your typical president, so to say that he's going to be like obama, not doing things like bush did after 9/11 is crazy because he's already proven he's not like a typical president of
7:34 am
past. so, he's going to deal with this in his own way and if you talk to local officials, governor abbott, everybody has said that this has been a great response from washington. and they've been very proud of working with d.c. on this and therefore, it's all good for me. if you look at the tapes and look at meetings, trump has had, he's engaged and talking with local officials and help. >> scott made a point. 's not a politician. when you respond to a crisis and natural disaster, there is a fine line. you have to show empathy and get yourself involved, but you don't want to look too-- there's just a certain way you have to seem. it's a hard thing to do and he's an outsider to politics, do you think he's doing a good job? >> you know, lauren, the media can criticize president trump all they want. it's not going to put a roof over the heads of thousands of families that have been displaced in texas. it's not a rallying cry. at the end of the day, look, these families are struggling right now and he's going to be
7:35 am
judged based on leadership, not in the relief effort, but the recovery and how he directs infrastructure. it's going to take billions of dollars and years of leadership. that's ultimate i will going to be his legacy, how he deals with this after the fact. what he did or didn't do, what he wore or-- that's irrelevant and short coming and it's the media taking partisan pot shots when the president is vulnerable. lauren: you would think in a natural disaster, this would be the time to tomorrow contingent. the media isn't just bashing the president. the media is bashing texans. we want to he shoe you this cartoon from politico. mocking and making fun of the people in texas. you see, you know, a man being saved by the coast guard, but goes, oh, no, because texas is a red state and believe in small government, it has to be god saving them not the coast guard. is this necessary, rachel is cartoon like this? >> no, it shows the distan so many liberals have for religious
7:36 am
ignorance. the idea that there's only white people in texas, it's a very diverse state. this kind of disdain makes more people run into the arms of donald trump, because donald trump may be a mogul and billionaire from manhattan, but he is somebody who has never looked down on the religious right and never mocked them and i think he was rewarded electorally not just by the right, but by good people who thinks at that religion is in our country and shouldn't be mock. lauren: what's interesting about that cartoon, juan, houston voted to hillary clinton. >> houston is half hispanic and went strongly a blue city. now what? that cartoon does suggest to me you hear this rhetoric out of texas, let's secede and guess what? we want small government. we don't trust the federal government. guess who is helping?
7:37 am
it's us the american people in the form of our government. >> juan. >> let me quickly add, rachel, when you think about the trump budget on issues like flood insurance, we're talking here on cashin' in, guess what, they don't want it how about community block grants to help with recovery. guess what? >> first of all, republicans, koifrs for limited government, this is precisely the kind of things they want the government for. they want the government out of their, you know, doctor's offices, they don't want the government to tell how much salt or soda pop they should drink, but this is the kind of thing. this is the kind of thing that government should do and is the only place that government, you know, it's hard to coordinate something like this which is private enterprise. >> juan, texas is a proud state, too, guys. the budget surplus they have. >> that's right. >> they've got money to spend on recovery effort. they can stand on this on their own, but they're going to get help from the federal government as they should, but texas is a
7:38 am
great state. it's strong, it's got a great economy, that's why they feel they can handle things on their own. >> the texas economy is 1/10-- >> the political satire is in such bad taste, you don't kick people when they're down. the president is fair game, he ran for office, but when texans are down on their luck, you write a satirecal cartoon and take the pot shots. we've seen nothing of neighbor helping neighbor and stranger helping strange and you see the cartoon, politics are blinding us to humanity right now, larry. i'll let you respond. >> politics, it is politics as usual and again, this is supposed to be that unity moment where we come together and help one another and instead you get people exacerbating the divide in this country and this is where leadership makes a difference, we need to change the dialog in washington and bring everyone together to help one another and help americans,
7:39 am
and that's what this is an opportunity for. lauren: which is making a lot of people angry on both sides, i have to say, about that politico cartoon we showed you. will the president's call to unite the country after hurricane harvey unite c you know who likes to be in control? this guy. check it out! self-appendectomy! oh, that's really attached. that's why i rent from national. where i get the control to choose any car in the aisle i want, not some car they choose for me. which makes me one smooth operator. ah! still a little tender. >> president is expected to meet with key congressional leaders next week amid calls for unity after the wrath of harvey. he's expected to push his tax cut agenda, a lot to talk about to get the tax cut on track. on tax reform, i think that everybody wants a tax cut, right? >> i was hopeful months ago. the agenda, i don't know if it was ever on track. this is a congress that has trouble with the small responsibility they have to the people, governance. i think that congress is more opposed to him than when he was inaugurated in january.
7:44 am
i'm not expecting anything to be done on tax reform. lauren: oh, boy. the fact that we're dealing with a natural disaster right now. does this push back the agenda, mainly tax reform and how much further does it push us back? >> i don't think there's a direct relationship there, although, it's going to cost money for the recovery effort. what we're seeing so far is that the republican majority in congress is saying let's do that as a separate item. let's not count that against the potential for raising the debt ceiling or a spending bill. but, i think the bigger question here, and this is picking up on what you just heard, overwhelming majority of the american people don't have any expectation that we're actually going to get tax reform done. that could be good news. we saw this, by the way, in a fox poll. low expectations may allow congress to get something and people will say thank goodness, they did something not nothing this time. lauren: but low expectations,
7:45 am
are about congress's responsibility to get something done. only 14% of people according to the fox news poll think that congress can get something done on tax reform and the president has put this in congress's hands. separating himself from them. and if they don't get it done, or if he does, a pat on the back. >> so much of the agenda has been at the senate level. they've been back home and getting an earful from constituents and tax reform is something where you can get some bipartisan help with, and so, this is a chance for the congress, i think, to atone themselves for what they didn't do on health care, and i think that they know that it is really do or die. this is their chance to make up for what they didn't do, and if they don't do it, there's going to be hell to pay come mid terms. lauren: it's interesting, larry, because if you look at the stock market, it's right at or near

record highs depending on the index you look at. it's not priced in tax reform. so should we get it, what happens to your 401(k)? >> a huge catalyst for the average american who has been saving in retirement plans. it would be important because it would be so widespread for middle class americans and the relief at that we're seeing for houston in bake sales and in church drives and clothing drives, the sam relief we need to see for middle class taxpayers through tax reform and not tax cut. families are dealing with soaring health care costs and stagnant wages, this is the relief they need for american workers to be more competitive on the global stage. that's why it has to happen. lauren: i'm so glad that larry brought up wages, wages grew three whole pennies. what are you going to do with your three cents. americans aren't making money. one way, and everybody says this, the way you can get wages to go up, is to give everybody

not have the gear, juan, in texas. what would it look like? >> it would look like state troopers and send in the military from the united states government with the same equipment. the problem here, and i think this is what would have the founding fathers pulling out their hair. local police were never intended to be a military force, never intended to confront protesters or deal with problems with using overwhelming force that made us, the citizens, really, their subjects. that's not what this is about. >> and thouugthough-- those protesters are getting out of hand and they have you had be equipped. >> they should be equipped as a police force not given surplus from the u.s. military left over after middle eastern wars. >> we're an ever-changing world and the police forces were never contemplating the threats they're facing today, whether it's domestic or international and they've got to be equipped to handle the threats.
7:54 am
they've got to be trained to handle the threats, something missing in this conversation. they've got to have the funding to train local dedicated law enforcement so they know how to defend american citizens. >> i don't think anybody is saying we want it take money away. that's not the issue. i think it's the militerization setting off alarms. and it's interesting to me, conservatives especially after incidents like ferguson were the first to say they disagreed with a lot of black lives matter stuff, but first to say, what's going on with our police looking like they are an authoritarian force. >> those demonstrations are getting more out of control because we're militarizing the police? come on, that's not why. antifa, the alt-left, alt-right are more dangerous on their own, not responding to police. lauren: rachel, i'll let you wrap it up. job of the police are to protect the citizens. shouldn't they have the best gear to do that? >> i think they should have the
