this unprecedented flooding in parts like jacksonville and northern florida at this hour. it climbed north into georgia a new report just come in and of one storm related death in georgia the sunshine state now state now in the dark nearly 7 million people 67 percent of florida now without power and officials say it may take weeks to restore. in just a moment. in police crackdown on voters trying to take advantage of the situation making dozens of arrests already the very latest on that aftermath and we are remembering of course on september 11 to the horrific attacks that took place 16 years ago today. the markets breathing a huge sigh of relief. the north korea missile test did not happen. do you remember that.

record flooding as the storm turns the biggest streets into rivers. and now the daylight is revealing just how much damage was done two southern parts of the state. this is normandy boulevard here in miami beach. on a normal day any hour of the day tons of cars going westbound over here towards the city of miami. there is nobody here because trees like this for a day and half have been lane and had -- lane across the road. seventy-five mile-per-hour winds. that was the impact in southeast florida. the top of the treat was all the way over to the front door of that guy's house. his whole house is covered in mud. it covered the entire area. not down the street business is trying to get back to going. grocery stores are starting to open up a little bit at a time

and only a few people at a time are being allowed in to the bay supermarket that have a line of about 50 people standing in the 92-degree florida september heat. that is being worked on more on that in a second. driving around some of the storm surge remnants are still in neighborhoods still under a bit of a day lose as we found this money. one man his house was under 5 feet of water at the peak and it slowly going down. as with utilities they are in full force. just hours after the pummeling winds and pounding rain finally let up enough so that the cruise could get out. power has been restored to a few hundred thousand people

through beginning at about 11:00 last night. lasting up to about 2:00 this afternoon. tinkling the storm spent so much time on land in some cases that we can pretty substantially before i got to our area. producing for us mainly a tropical storm force when. -- wind. you have already referenced almost 70% of the state right now is without power. i'm confident that we in the coming days will be pretty well recovered such that we can turn our attention and our resources to helping our friends to the east of us and then further south. >> you mentioned something that is so ironic in the storm. people were told to a back away. they went on the move a lot of them came to where you are. there was no escape from the storm.

just traveling up the length of the state. every time i heard a new evacuation order mentioned and i have friends coming from south florida and family members started asking where do we go. my city where we have a hurricane last year in the open three or four shelters with 11 public shelters in jim's that we converted in nearly every one of them full to not only our own community but our neighbors. i spoke to one woman who was from miami. she was speaking to me about the fact that she took her rent money to get her family out of harm's way. and is just hopeful that her landlord well have some mercy on them when they make it back home.

hurricane irma's wins and brain had largely left florida. but it will last much longer. more than 6.7 million customers that is a lot of people they are without power. it's almost two thirds of the entire state. here now is rob a goal. he is the vice president of power and light company. they're all wondering the same thing how long is it going to take. >> it's can take quite a while. candidly part of it is going to be on whether you are in the east or west coast. the way irma struck us the east coast is going to be more of a normal restoration. it is more of it putting the

wire backup. the west coast will be a complete rebuild. we are trying to set expectations. we had spent a lot of money on our grid nearly $3 million into our grid. but irma was just an absolute monster. so it's not even a matter of clearing away the pictures. we have looked at these online. there are trees down to have taken down power lines. you have to do something even more extreme than that.

in the western part of the state for sure. with hurricane force winds not just the hurricane force one or two. when you have the wind field that you saw. think about the fact that mother nature has not done housecleaning if you well. and more than a decade. with trees coming down that were a bright white. they're coming down onto their lines. it is a very serious situation. and then overlay the fact that they have severe flooding and surge in many places. the reality is we are still fighting up in the north of our territory. it goes from the georgia florida line all the way down towards the keys. and then overlay on top of that. >> and i want to run out of time.

what are people supposed to do in the meantime. they can't live without light and running water what are they supposed to do? >> this was going to be a long restoration we said that from the get-go. that's where the governor and all of the other local state and federal officials were saint saying get out now. because irma was a storm that is unlike anything we have ever seen. it could be of historic proportions. it's not that we don't have the ability to respond with an army of 19,500 restoration workers that are out there right now restoring power.

they are saying we need it now more than we did before the storms because it will get to the economy churning and we turning and we can make up for the disasters. we've have businessmen on. he said maybe we should put off tax cuts until we pay for the hurricane who is right here. we need tax reform desperately. we are supposed to get this done in the spring. anything the president could do to accelerate it would be a welcomed news. you have to couple this with a reduction in spending. when you have a disasters like this obviously we will step up and fund those but where are you going to actually cut spending. that is a big questions that conservatives have.
