lauren: if you are just to name, we have breaking news this morning. absolute chaos on the las vegas strip as shots rang out in an outdoor music festival. what we know now, at least 20 people are dead and at least 100 are wounded, some of them critically. some of the deceased are off duty police officers at the jason held in concert. police said the suspect was killed on the 302nd floor at the mandalay bay hotel across from the concert when he fired down. hundreds of police have flooded the area as thousands in the crowd tried to seek safety.
5:01 am
cheryl: shooting started during the performance by jason aldean b. adam housley spoke with two witnesses there. >> were you carrying people? >> as long as they weren't calling. >> you were trying to help whoever you could hear the train to a companion large. flights at mccarron international airport which was a 10 minute drive from this location were temporarily halted because of the shooting. lauren: the las vegas police department at a press conference a half-hour ago. let's listen to that again. >> good evening. obviously i am sure if joel bardo from las vegas county and i'm here to talk about the tragic event taking place and currently taking place at the mandalay bay of las vegas boulevard south. we experienced a net shooter situation, approximately
5:02 am
10:08 p.m. tonight this evening. we had calls coming to dispatch an multiple shots being fired from the direction of the mandalay bay towards the route 91 concert that was taking place on the east side of las vegas boulevard. through investigation and response, we determined a shooter in the 302nd floor of the mandalay bay. officers responded to that location and engaged the suspect at that location. he is dead currently. he has been identified. he's a local resident. i will not release his name at this time, but we are interested in a companion that is traveling with them in her name is -- i will provide you the name of police sunday said mary lou family marilou danley. she is an asian female approximately four-foot 11.

attended and are unable to contact them. that number will be established shortly located out to you to publicize shortly. additionally, anybody that may have cell phone video or any type of video associated with this event that would be of benefit to investigation. please respond to las vegas. train to now want to go to adam housley live on the same las vegas. reporter: he said this coming from his twitter handle. tonight has been beyond horrific. i still don't know what to say but i want to let everyone know me and my crew are safe. thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved today. it hurts my heart does that happen to anyone coming out to enjoy what should've been a fun night. #heartbroken #stop the hate. that came from jason aldean. behind me here folks about a quarter-mile down the street. that is where three bodies were found.
5:05 am
they've been taken down and rented tables. people were brought in all directions away from the scene, away from the gunfire. three bodies, and ambulances down there as well as law enforcement were found on top of tables down there. they had been carried and at some point the realization was made they did not make it. this is how far their fellow concertgoers took them. all this direction. all this distance. over there was the concert. that's how far they brought them. we met people all throughout the evening come the last evening come the evening come to last for hours to read no shirts on because they use them to stuff was, cover bodies can help people come the blood all over them. this is confirmed by the firefighter here celebrating a birthday that that was used as a gurney. my family had one in the back of the grocery store. that was used to transport a body because it has wheels. they were using whatever they could. they use as concert in games
quote
5:06 am
that they can be moved around. people were turning them on their side can be them as structures. that was the scene here and now we hear the numbers. robert hayes the firefighter from l.a. who is here as a concertgoer himself ended up being inside. basically one of the main responders because what he does for a living said he personally saw 15 to 20 dead, pronounced 15 to 20 dead and now we know at least one in more than 100 injured. those numbers will fluctuate because people were driven in cars. right over there, behind me where the concert is. we do know there are still bodies inside. the body is heard of anyone injured. ouch is the recovery process in the investigation. >> will come back to of course. trade do we want to bring in more details. listening to adam housley report for the fox news channel.
5:07 am
steve roberts, former member of fbi joint terrorism task force. good morning. your first initial thoughts on what you see know what you've heard coming out of las vegas overnight. >> it appears that this was preplanned. certainly this individual had not inadequate in. he positioned himself in such a way that he would kill as many people as possible, which he did unfortunately. he is now killed. police will do a complete forensics on him. they have to find a motive. they want to find out why this individual did what he did and what is very important is that they find his roommate. she's been identified as a female, possibly living with him in that area. nowhere to be found at this point. she will keep this investigation. lauren: who exactly is involved in this investigation? how fast can they get the information they are looking for? >> the local police are
5:08 am
involved. state police. i have no doubt the fbi is involved. possibly the joint terrorism task force. there's no indication of any terrorism nexus at this point, but everything is on the table. they will certainly find out who, what, when, where, why this individual. you have multi-agencies involved in this investigation during a lot of collaboration of information not only on the scene but said he identified the shooter, they will no doubt go to regulate kovacic's computers, cell phones come at a direct. cheryl: the attack was seen happening then unfolding this hearken back but we see another lone wolf attacks either here in the united states or abroad, that was actually multiple suspects or the werewolf attack at the night club in orlando. so many times the shooting in l.a. with that couple at the hospital. so many times we find out later on coming days later, weeks later the person is either
5:09 am
mentally traveled or were in fact radical icebreaking state dean on the internet. those vulnerable people that he will. again, this is not being called terror. how pervasive and easy it is for somebody to be convinced to do something, horrific attacks such as this one overnight. >> you bring up a good point overnight because most of the time after these incidents occur from their individuals to come forward and said i heard the shooter say something. there was some chatter on the internet about him or her. things do happen in the police usually get these people coming forward after the fact. that's why we emphasize if you see something, say something. so critically important. we don't know if anyone heard or saw something on the internet, but it's key their instinct is telling them something is not right here. >> we also have terrorism in
5:10 am
canada and that refugee come at the shooter known to police for having this radical extreme ideology. more often than not, people inflict harm on our society are known to officials. i want to talk to you now about this. it was a preplanned attack from a position to as many people as possible with a fully automatic weapon that he was likely trained in. how would he bring the west end of that size into the hotel without being noticed. could be broken in several pieces of luggage, could he bring it in a golf bag, how do you get this equipment into the 302nd floor at the mandalay bay hotel. >> some of these weapons could be broken down. we do not know what type of weapon this was, but there's no doubt in my mind just based and i suggested to not inadequate and, just based on the rapidfire affecting. these weapons could be broken
5:11 am
down and carried in a suitcase. that individual is on their radar and it goes back to the police manpower and the need to increase a lot of these agencies with manpower to follow these people in the radar. >> in a while so when you look at something as horrific as this in the investigation, we had a retired las vegas police officer on a few moments ago. he said this is going to take days because of the size of the crime scene. you got the mandalay bay across the street from where the route 91 music festival is happening. as we've now learned, when that spring, the firepower began, people just started to run for cover. they jumped into neighboring hotels. they just ran. how difficult does that make it for investors to take the moment
5:12 am
by moment happening that would occur just now? >> is going to be very difficult. it will take many days because you do have multiple scenes they have to investigate. you have to talk to everyone in the hotel the shooter was in. obviously they have to trace the western backed to where that came from and they are no doubt in my mind a lot of video footage i worry that area that they will be analyzing. very, very important to do that. lauren: adam housley really painted for us the personal side of this their heroic images that are coming out because they were using clothing to help those who were shot. fraser is being used as gurneys. hoping to each other in a situation you would think would be possible. do you think being based on your experience that las vegas male
5:13 am
something like this would eventually happen because of the type of crowd that attacks. >> you never know. he said to yourself a lot of crowds all over the country. i got to tell you i did see a this morning interviewed by reporters. i can tell they were near shot. they got up in some of them went right back into the line of fire to help their fellow americans. that tells you something about the good of this country. we haven't heard much good lately. a lot of criticisms about our nation in the leadership but they're all doing a great job to pull together. >> i want to briefly let you know i got an e-mail to the public on from jason aldean pedestal about to say but my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. it hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone just
5:14 am
coming out to the should be a night. #stop the hate. back to this issue of soft targets because we as a nation whether this was domestic terror, homegrown terror, isis inspired terror, whatever this ends up being you don't want to stop their lives in paris the american spirit. we still want to go out and enjoy concerts, have a great night with family and friends. i'm wondering if we are doing enough when it comes to security in this country right now and maybe awareness. >> i tell you i believe we have inhabited horrific attack on the scale of 9/11 because of the good work of the fbi and law enforcement throughout this nation to tell you what will happen now when i really believe this. since the shooter was in a hotel across the concert, i believe
5:15 am
you are now going to see security beefed up to a point that whenever there is outer concerts in high elevated places, police will go to those high elevated lead places and make sure there's nothing from those areas. it changes the game a little bit. it will take a lot more money and manpower is the key. a lot of commitment of manpower to local, federal law-enforcement agencies. >> c. rodgers, thank you for being with us during this breaking news. we'll come back if you're still available. we want to move on for a moment here. >> let's bring in bob massie, he joins us now on the phone. good morning. this is tragic for you. your friend's kids were on this strip, here they were actually hiding? are they safe now? what have they told you? >> yeah, they are at home. they were at the concert and
5:16 am
they were actually sitting up by this stage and heard the shot. they started running for safety and at some point recognize what was going on and got out of the place. they are obviously very shook up. thank god they are okay. cheryl: did they have been the talk about it sounded like? a lot said it was firecrackers. they initially thought it was firecrackers. >> they initially thought it was part of the show until they recognized and started seeing people go down and obviously they reacted as anybody would. they said it was complete mayhem and people were frightened and running. the whole thing is sick. it just makes you sick. it was very scary for them. lauren: this is an act of terrorism. we don't know what type, but it was preplanned. the day was to kill as many
5:17 am
people as possible. i have hate to say it, but that they been thinking twice about going to another concert venue packed with people because of the threat of something like this happening and quite frankly it's happened too often recently. >> as a parent of three children and five grandchildren they preach to my kids all the time that there is no place safe. i told them the things that they should do. young people are young people and they have no fear. the kids best friends, his oldest son obviously it is a life changer for them to be part of this. you want to be able to go to these things. you want to be able to have a nice evening. no matter where this happens in las vegas because of the kind that shooting, this happened at
5:18 am
mandalay bay, this is simply no city can afford because of the tourism we have. vicious devastating. cheryl: bob, let's talk about that area of the las vegas strip. the shooter was found on the 302nd floor of the mandalay bay, overlooking the route 91 harvey's music festival. 40,000 fans were out side. i don't know if you've been down the last couple days to where this was all taking place, but we are trying to figure out how difficult this would be as far as the shots that were taken. the 302nd floor at the mandalay bay pointing down. we don't know who this person isn't more importantly we don't know what kind of training they may have had operating a weapon like basically a fully automatic weapon is what they are saying. >> the area of mandalay bay is actually close to the last casino on the south end of the
5:19 am
strip right across from the airport and right across from the vacant property where they thought over the years they would vote something else because of the height needed to do it. i'm sure you already know this person must have some type of training you would think although it was a target range. anybody, no matter what level of skill could have done what he did. but this area actually has a developed area. the mandalay bay is one of the most beautiful casinos in las vegas. it's where the old hacienda hotel is their 35 years ago. it does bring a lot of young people. this venue has been used as one of the few areas left on that side of the strip to allow this type of concert. this was open range for this guy. like i said, when you go to the
5:20 am
mandalay bay a little further south, it's a shopping area. you can start going towards the residential area. if you're going to do something crazy like this with this crowd, and it's one of the only places on the strip for you have that kind of area for that many people. lauren: and it's probably something. we know the shooter was a local. if you don't mind saying so, how far are you from the strip right now? spin up and probably from my house to the strip without traffic they be 10, 15 minutes at the most. lauren: i just wanted to make sure you couldn't see anything out of window. >> not really. but i tell you what, there were helicopters everywhere. i got a call from my youngest son. he said that, turn on the tv. for where you live, there were helicopters all over the sky.
5:21 am
it was just like a war zone. cheryl: bob, it is interesting you mention the fact there is some vacant land in the southern part of the las vegas strip. i was there three weeks ago and you are right, there is a lot of open areas they are, which as you are stating, does this mean it is frankly an easy target? i'm wondering if that is why they picked this. why did you pick that hotel, the open air festival if you will. all the investigators need to figure out. it does raise some question marks about the timing and location of the lone wolf demand shows. >> yeah, as a matter of fact come in this area, not far from this area was one of the places where they talked about putting the stadium. instead they went a little biased in the interstate obviously i don't know but still closed. but other than this area, if you
5:22 am
go north, that is about the only other major area that i can recall right now that would allow this kind of concert and that is being developed. so there is not much left except in this area and that is why they do these kinds of venues they are because the area is an open area, easy access on the strip. cheryl: bob massie, thank you very much. post a the property name here on an upward. we are glad your kids are okay. lauren: we continue to follow the devastating situation of las vegas this morning as we get more details about the deadly shooting at a country music concert. tracee carrasco joining us with what we know so far. if you can update us on the situation as we know it. tracee: and increasingly
5:23 am
deadlier tragedy as the minutes go by. right now more than 20 people have been reported dead and over 100 injured after an act of shooter opened fire on a country music festival or the 302nd floor at the mandalay bay resort and casino. dallas country singer jason aldean on stage during the shooting. police have confirmed that's one shooter and they are searching for a second female suspect believed to be with the attack. there is no active threat right now, but more from the las vegas community to be on alert. we heard nightmare stories from eyewitnesses who risk their lives to help others. one described a horrific event to fox news adam housley. >> i went back in with s.w.a.t
5:24 am
did they give me a vast identify myself. i never went back into it and never left i left right now when they got jason aldean out. we did a recount of the whole situation to make sure at the time i checked everybody. i was with another medic from the fire department and i went back inside. it's just something we do. it wasn't trying to be a hero. >> will hear many stories and continue to bring you updates as they come in. cheryl: tracee carrasco, thank you for the update. i tried las vegas metropolitan police officer randy sutton on the telephone. >> hayek, things are unfolding rather quickly write now. i just received information that this e-mail, that they are seeking was an employee of the mandalay bay.
5:25 am
that indicated how the weapons were brought in. lauren:.female, marilou danley, the roommate of the shooter who is now dead was an employee of the mandalay bay. that certainly changes the story, cheryl. cheryl: it does. also getting an update that the freeways have been closed around the area, the offerings between sahara avenue. that is a good sign for those that are waking up to this horrific scene in las vegas. it's monday morning so they are starting to reopen the area appear to want to ask you quick as the investigation unfolds, what do you think they will be focusing him now? do you think they'll be looking at the shooter himself from the reason he did this or is it more of a broader picture, an outside
5:26 am
group that might have influenced the shooter? >> the answer to that is all of the above. all stops are pulled out on this one. there is a tremendous amount. this is a huge crime scene. so there will be the crime scene investigation, which of course will be separate from the criminal investigation. there will be fbi agents said metro police detectives that will be combing through every aspect of this individual's life, on the social media, all of his contacts. there will be search warrants done -- be done right now on his place of residence. any storage units and interviews with every person he had contact
5:27 am
with, though determined from not what the motivation was. lauren: randy, we have to wrap you right here. thank you for your time. we are going to go to a break right now. eciated that we're the webber family and we are usaa members for life. just like the people every business is different. but every one of those businesses will need legal help as they age and grow. whether it be with customer contracts, agreements to lease a space or protecting your work. legalzoom's network of attorneys can help you,
5:28 am
5:30 am
cheryl: breaking news. we continue to follow the devastating situation in las vegas happening overnight to get more details about the deadly shooting of the country music concert festival that happened right on the las vegas strip. tracee carrasco here to let you know more. reporter: following the latest update on what an increasingly deadly tragedy at the minutes go by. right now more than 20 people reported dead in more than 100 injured after an active shooter opened fire on a country music festival from the 302nd floor of the mandalay bay resort and casino.
5:31 am
you can hear the gunfire is country music performer jason now being -- jason aldean was onstage. they have identified one shooter and art searching for a second suspect believed to be with the attack. no active threat right now but once las vegas community to be in a letter. we hear stories from the nightmare story that witnesses witnesses -- of witnesses. >> we saw a lot of people that look like they were pretty bloody pythian blitzers hadn't arrived yet so they were just putting people into vehicles. trains were just awful. we'll bring you updates as they come in. cheryl: thank you so much. to receive carrasco with this horrific series of events. lauren: let's bring in steve rogers.
5:32 am
hey, steve. >> good morning. the point in the investigation were eventually will find out who the shooter was. we will start to talk to all of his friends and family and you might hear people say he did say this crazy thing at one point and lo and behold usually it turns out they never reported him. they never report the suspected that committee. >> that's absolutely right and that is why we emphasize that you see something come hear something, say something. a couple questions authority been answered. number one, was a preplanned? it certainly looks like it. if in fact his roommate or girlfriend worked in that hotel, she no doubt give them access to that room on the 302nd floor and was instrumental in getting the weapon in that hotel. she had to take advantage point where he could kill the most people in a short amount of time. that's why it's important police scanner and get her life.
5:33 am
cheryl: going to the scope of the investigation can we talked about this before, but how does somebody get the training that would be needed to use a machine gunner fully automatic weapon which went to get the video you can confirm that's what it is. first off, how did they get the training and number two, how does the person get that amount of equipment into mandalay bay without being seen to your point? maybe it was the roommate. notice the investigation begins in the sun rises it's only 2:30 in the morning right now. they've got a start canvassing this massive scene to try and find clues and piece together everything. the families of the victims will want answers and police want answers. i do begin that process? >> you will see multi-agencies as well including the fbi, federal, local, state agencies. manpower is massive. they will now speak to everyone who that employee had in contact
5:34 am
with as well as the shooter. officers will do a lot of forensic investigation on their computers, on their cell phones. it is going to take many, many days. but they have to get down to the motive what on earth went through their minds to play in the spirit why did they do this? lauren: that is why we are calling it terror. we don't know what ranch, but when something is preplanned and position yourself with a weapon to kill as many people as possible, you just have to say what is wrong with this person. that would have probably thousands of friends and family mourning the loss of innocent souls. >> uri. this is a terrorist attack. the question is was there anyone else involved in the planning? a lot of people like to play games with the names. this was an act of terror. when you look at the faces of
5:35 am
the people of individuals and reporters interviewed this morning were terrorized. the question has to be answered is who else was involved if anyone else was involved, where did they get the weapons, ammunition, perhaps there is some individuals involved and where they radicalize dierker which is very important. cheryl: steve, call up was at its domestic terrorism, so be it, but this was a soft target and we have to bring that up because this seems to be the lone wolf shooters event of choice. a concert venue we saw in paris. a nightclub, everyone packed into a small amount of space. these persons wanted to do mass casualties. i do want to bring up the state ban. we just got the statement from singer jason aldean. this is his concert. he was onstage singing. she stopped, wasn't sure what he heard and started eating again. here are basically as far as
5:36 am
they are hearing about being safe and everything that they are obviously heartbroken. tonight has been horrific. i still don't know what to say but me and my group are safe. thoughts and prayers to everyone involved. hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who is coming out to enjoy a fun night. #stop the hate. that is the statement which is gone and from jason aldean. this is our final thought from you, steve. this soft target a mass event. do we need to be on alert? >> it is going to change law enforcement strategy with regard to soft targets. this took place on the sub 34 and a hotel across the street from soft target sitting ducks. lon forstmann is not only going to have to look at the prevention of suicide bombers et cetera on the ground. now they have to do a lot of survey of hotels or any elevated
5:37 am
areas for these concerts are taking place. lauren: we appreciate you this morning. >> no problem. cheryl: we do want to take a look at the stock markets. investors always tuned in and what we have breaking news like this comes sometimes you do see a market effect. right now the dallas pretty much held steady. the features anyway at this horrific situation has unfolded in vegas. the premarket s&p 500, nasdaq and the markets with a lot of records and other things. but so far, no effect on markets right now. lauren: included incidents in canada over the weekend. let's bring in an eyewitness at the route 91 country music festival when the shooting took base. aaron, how are you doing? >> were doing okay all things considered, thank you. we were about 20, 30 feet from the stage and no progress area.
5:38 am
a lot of people packed in there, my two sisters, heard a pop, pop sound. returned in their head than a personal confetti cannon go off. without okay that's all it was, but why would anything be shot off this sounds like a gun. we cut. we kept enjoying the concert and 10 seconds later it happened again. people started talking and then we thought we should get down and there would be a break and then more semi automatic gunshots going off. we just got on the ground. cheryl: you're obviously still i'm sure in shock over what you just been through. how long do you think maybe these shots are being fired? some witnesses say it went on for five minutes, but again i thought it was firecrackers. >> it took a couple of minutes to realize that it was for real. i think that is where a lot of the injuries happened. we got down on the ground and
5:39 am
all in all it was less than 10 minutes and about halfway through, about five minutes in, we noticed two people next to us had been shot in the face. they were trying to get to her, but at the same time we're trying to protect ourselves. we waited for a break where they were reloading. they were laying there, sitting next to her wideout in the open with nothing to protect ourselves. lauren: you did not appoint a sniper was overhead, did you? >> it sounded like they were -- does the problem. no wonder where it's coming from. there is no exit to us because we were near this page. we started running to the exit as far away from the gunshots as possible and exited through the back of the events center.
5:40 am
cheryl: erin, talk about the next steps. there is obviously chaos and surrounding area. they had seen fit is being loaded onto trucks, the dems put on top of freezers and rolled out. did you witness any of that if you don't mind me asking? >> we didn't. we left before that happened. we did witness a lot of people got on the ground that did not look like they had survived. we saw quite a few. i would say the numbers are on the low end when they're estimating on the west coast more than 20 dead -- more than 100 injured and if that the case there were quite a few people on the ground and either check to see if you're okay or save your own life. cheryl: when you got to the xa, i'm only asking because when you go to concerts, some people figure out the exit strategy should something happen because this is the time we live in right now.
5:41 am
did you feel gated you feel cheated in feel cheated him? were you able to get out as quickly as possible? >> the only reason we didn't feel cheated and when we left because so many people had made a run for it that we were going to be stampeded if everyone tried to leave at once. we were standing there saying something was about to happen over the course of these three days. if something was to happen, where would we go? you're crammed in to get as close as possible. you'd be going nowhere fast or that's exactly what happened. that's why so many people were injured because you can only go so fast. cheryl: help us out with who was there appeared a wicked cease from our our vantage point as pictures of the folks coming out, whether they were injured or we saw one man in a wheelchair. talk about the crowd because we understand there was a lot of families, up to 70, 80 year olds that were there for that concert. a country music festival.
5:42 am
>> over the course of the weekend we saw some younger kids. they could get and, three, six and under. it's such a large crowd and there's a lot of alcohol being served. our big concern is how many people we saw so heavily intoxicated to make it nearly impossible to run for your life. lauren: have you been able to get in touch with their friends and family at home to know you are okay? >> smi with the rest of my family. i came in from california. my other sister came from new jersey and my sister and parents live here. our brother-in-law was able to come get us from the hotel we were hiding and then get us home, so at least we are together now and her husband have been notified. cheryl: which hotel did you run through? >> we win in the backs of the backs of the store and found an elevator and went as high as we could. cheryl: we've got this number now and we are waiting for an update from the sheriff there. you've got 100 plus people
5:43 am
injured and at least 20 dead. we also understand a lot of people were hurt because they were trampled. is that true? >> i'm sure. i'm sure that happening. not at the point direct from the but i'm sure that was the case. there were 30,000 people there. transfer we are seeing these amazing is always a pair with some of concert goers helping others, but at the same time adrenaline kicks in and you run for your life and get yourself to the exit. were you able to leave the tropicana easily, safely? >> said police downstairs. we would've for a good hour. he had to come from another direction to come in and get us, but we were allowed to leave. cheryl: we are getting a statement from the governor of nevada, governor sandoval saying this is a tragic and heinous act of violence that has shaken nevada and the families here. or is it the victims about was the fact that by the acts of cowardice. i'm sure you saw the acts of heroism. not only trying to save your own
5:44 am
life, but also trying to protect your friends. i can imagine what that must of been like for you. >> yeah, it was. you get to know people when you're standing around there. i just put my arms on top of my sister's head and covered their heads and a gentleman over the top of three of us. he did not do that. it was pretty amazing. lauren: you are living in vegas now? you are local? >> i was born and raised here. i live in california now. my sisters and i can't together. lauren: i don't know what the word is, but it makes it worse that the shooter was a local resident of las vegas are actively trying to inflict harm and the community. >> yeah, it was pretty shocking to hear someone from my own tongue would do this to his own people. cheryl: i have to say we do appreciate you witness. we have to at some point say
5:45 am
