the fcc is right in ending those rules that allow government to have more control over the internet. now, another side of this, people are saying that he's overtly criticizing the president. i think you have to read in between the lines. i think you are looking too deeply into what he said for an overt criticism of the sitting president. what do you think? >> it's not overt, it's oblique. it's not that subtle. when he talks about leaders who need to be responsible in how they engage on social media. it's a slap at trump and probably and deserved slap. a number of the points he made were solid and good. but i'm also sitting there being, dude, when you just point out hashtags unto themselves aren't enough.

according to plitd co-house speaker paul ryan and senate leader mitch mcconnell have completely different views on entitlement reform. ryan wants to take an ax to medicaid, medicare and welfare and he feels he has the momentum to do that after passing tax cuts. mitch mcconnell said it's not happening. so will washington ever have the courage to shrink the federal government? what i think is so incredibly necessary is for these legislators to operate so they don't care if they are re-elected. entitlements are so cumbersome to the point of being unfair to those they claim to help. kat they are not compassionate when there is a system that keeps you dependent on welfare. i don't know what the republican party is anymore.

people say it's a fiscally conservative party and no they aren't. they are more likely to pass this huge infrastructure spending bill than they are to cut entitlements. i will not be able to handle it if mitch mcconnell ever says anything about being fiscally conservative. they don't care about the national debt or budget. they just want to spend money like democrats do. kennedy: they never give it to the people who need it. those who are the most of vulnerable are the last ones in line when you allow too many people to line up. >> the government becomes the middle man and these are not safety nets. these are spider webs. otherwise you wouldn't have generations of families on public assistance.

so every time i go i thank rich people for all the great work they are doing for society. kennedy: when you see the ballet or the opera or any number of the arts that are still alive and thriving is because of the benefactors contributing to these programs. obviously the new tax bill that was signed into law sort of penalizes people who make charitable donations who itemized those donations in the past, and $4,400 were deducted against income. but 5% of what used to be 30% of people will do that. >> there is higher standard deduction rate, so for most of people they are not going to want to go through and say i gave $5 at my church yesterday. i gave $5 two weeks ago. so for most of people the amount of deductions you are not going

to have to worry about them. that will be simplifying. kennedy: most of people will take the double standard deduction. >> there is lots of things people can do, and they say for high income people, a lot of those people are going to be doing a lot of itemized deductions. i'm not an expert on the specifics of it. but it will be simplifying it. a lot of charities are saying now that we are not itemizing each line, then we are not getting special benefits for people. that is true to some extent. ideally they will be having to get people's money through voluntary means and not getting these special privileges that we currently have. so i think americans should be able to decide if they want to give their money to charity or not give their money to charity.

and i question this whole approach the government needs to be encouraging people to be doing more. so i'm totally happy. kennedy: i don't think we need the government or hotheads like gregg popovich shaping people into giving money. and i don't think rich people by virtue of their richness are bad. >> if they want to give, they give. but we can't have government to say you need to do this or encourage you to do that. let the person decide. government shouldn't be deciding what percentage of your money goes to the opera. i happen to love the opera, but which won't mandate that on other people. even the rich person to doesn't give to charity, i would say

people. kennedy: we talked about how 90% of the isis territory has been taken back by the u.s. and our allies. what happens to the 30,000 isis fighters who are no longer fighting in iraq, syria and afghanistan? >> so there is a great concern in europe that they are going to return. there are places as we have seen in brussels where there are neighborhoods where a lot of folks come back and there have been -- there is evidence attacks have been planned from these placed. so europe is very concerned about folks coming back into europe. but that's something that could happen near the united states. but we have seen folks who haven't gone overseas. they have been right here at home. like the san bernardino attacks. they take every day items and try to do things with cars.

kennedy: the food and drug administration process could put your health and life at serious risk. a new report from the office of the inspector general fointds can take up to 10 months to get recalled items off the store shelves. that means' recalled products are left out for you to buy. in one case it took nearly 3 months for the fda to recall a brands of chief cheese after finds out it was contaminated with distear yeah.

should we get rid of the bloated bureaucracy all together? joining me now, dr. marc siegel. a professor of medicine. welcome back to the show, dr. siegel. so, you know, the fda has been wrought with failure over the last several decades. when you hear about these recalls, whether it's spinach or nut birth or cheese, or the entire chipotle chain, you just assume these problems better themselves. but this not an incentive for companies to take stiff off the shelf because they are waiting with for the government to do it for them. >> i'll tell you what a big problem is. companies have been able to keep recalled products on the shelves without anyone know being it. one thing it fda is doing. i do not believe they are asleep

at the switch. they established something called score. and i this's serious attempt to get at this problem. i heard from the fda that next year they are going to expose stories and companies that have tainted products on the shelves. kennedy: we should already been doing that. i understand there is a perceptual problem. but there is a health problem and potentially life and death problem. pregnant women at risk of losing their babies if they contract certain food-borne diseases. >> two infants did die in the amount of time you looked at. between 2012 and 2015 is when this report was covering. they looked at 30 instances. and 27 of them were called very severe.
