now is the fact that essentially the move to put 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum to protect those industries will ultimately have a deleterious impact on other industries, and those that steel and aluminum, automobiles, appliances in the concerns surrounding retaliation particularly in agriculture sector that has come canada to china. one thing i do want to bring up is the issue of the wto. in the clip that you played, secretary wilbur ross as well as representatives from the european union mention the world trade organization that's really causing a lot of the imbalance in our ability to negotiate their trade agreement. a bilateral approach may be a better way to go about this than a widespread across-the-board

tariff. cheryl: i want to stop you there because here's the thing. maria bartiromo asked stephen mcgeechan -- mnuchin yesterday. why do this broad tariff, 25% and 10%, would maybe it's china. what is it? >> our allies have been complicit in china dumping their steel. they will sell to an allied and they will then dump it on us. i believe in bilateral relationships more than a few multilateral relationships because they get screwed every time whether it's on steel and aluminum or whether it's on automobiles. president trump is right. he laid the gauntlet down. would you see happening when he did this? all of a sudden mexico and

canada are coming to the table. individually. that's the way i think the president has talked about it all along. >> we've seen this in the donald trump playbook in the past is a broad reaching attack. one of the things he potentially said on the campaign trail was that our trade agreements are unfair and unjust. he's not wrong on that point. is this the right way to do it? >> his assertions on trade are one of the reasons people in places like my home state of ohio, pennsylvania and michigan voted for donald trump because they like the tough talk on trade. frankly this is enough to play. he's basically saying we are going to do these sweeping tariffs, but the underlying object to here, particularly in the context of mexico and canada is to get them to the table. cheryl: i think you've got that.
