for the much smaller bank accounts from the mortgage lending standpoint. they are able to loosen the screws a little bit and hopefully compete better against the larger banks from an agency standpoint to consumers. >> i was taking a peek and you said there is actually too many banks in the u.s. we could see more m&a among the smaller banks? >> there are 6800 banks in the united states. that seems quite excessive. the fact the asset level has been raised, maybe you see some of these smaller regional banks come together and find out synergies and efficiencies within their regions. i would expect there to be more going forward. lauren: what about the political implications of all of this, john? for 10 years, and this is the big story yesterday, the collapse of bear stearns can the financial crisis and how we dealt with it. particularly liberal and

progressive democrats elizabeth warren saying this is terrible. the robot could lead to another financial crisis. where do you stand on that? >> i was at bear stearns 10 years ago when they bought a. i think what this does is add more sensibility to dodd-frank in and of itself. this is a help for trump in the sense he came into clearly deregulation and dodd-frank was one of his main agendas. clearly this was a big path in the senate, so it helps them bridge the gap is midterm elections are around the corner with the republican party. but i don't think it brings us back to the crisis level. back in february they gave wells fargo a spanking for some of the nefarious actions they've done the past couple years. i don't think this leads us back into the financial crisis, just as more sensibility to

i think a lot of this turnover might be ultimately a good thing. cheryl: obviously that? about the chemistry with mcmaster. the president wasn't there for the beginning. let's talk about white house chief of staff john kelly. he just came on board last summer, but it seems to me in the journal is reporting this morning that the president is finding ways to get around so he can still talk to his friends come is still kind of bring another voice is. do you think that's a risk for kelly's job now? >> i think so when they were brought in to really control the flow of information and the voices that were having an influence on him. that suggests that maybe john kelly, his days are questionable whether he still has control over what the president is gearing. when they look at shakeups in the white house.

maybe it's time for them to move out. another issue is that there have been some high-level profile examples of cabinet members who have been caught up in scandals, financial scandals in terms of how many are being sent. and so what if we want to have fiscal discipline and take that to the agencies, the leaders have to model that as well. cheryl: exposing the spending does not go over well in the white house. fox news reported that extensively. on the issue of allure and -- we all know him from his tv days. what do you expect him stepping into the economic advisory role? do you think will get more movement on tax reform, a.k.a. gary cohn to point out? >> absolutely. you mentioned before chemistry. any people who get along with the president and share his vision for the country.
