greg jarrett and john bolton are here on monday. angood night from new york. have a wonderful tomorrow. you can catch me 9:00 tomorrow morning. reporter: let's go live to miami where a press conference is in play. let's listen in. >> we have worked together on this situation. we have significant numbers of men, women and equipment committed to this. and we'll be here until the job is done. at this time on behalf of the mayor i would like to introduce and welcome governor scott. >> on behalf of everybody in our state, including my family. our heart goes out to anybody
5:01 am
impacted by this. being a dad and grandfather, you just hope this will never happen to anybody in your family or any family that you know. in my case any family in the state. i just received a briefing from the miami-dade fire rescue and law enforcement. i have been in constant contact with the mayor, the president, he klain chow, betsy devos of the department of education, and i know everybody is working hard to make sure that we continue to rescue anyone that can be rescued. we are going to do everything we can to take care of the individuals. the state will provide whatever resources possible. the department of transportation is going to help with the rescue
5:02 am
and recovery efforts and local traffic control. we'll do everything we can to help this situation. the florida department of transport take put out an information about this project. it was not an f.u.t. project, it was an fiu project. we'll hold anybody accountable if anybody has done anything wrong. but the most of important thing we can do right now is pray for the individuals that ended up in the hospital for their full recovery. pray for the family members that have lost loved ones. but i know we'll all want to do our best to find out exactly what happened here. we'll do that in a trance parent manner. if anybody has done anything wrong, we'll healed them accountable. i want to thank senator rubio
5:03 am
for being here. i'll turn it over to senator rubio. >> thank you, governor. for everybody standing here, this is again another troubling and tragic incident. for me personally f.i.u. is home. i have been aned a junk professor here for years. it's a project designed for safety. we lost a student crossing that road behind us. it was going to be a signature project, one people would identify with this school and community, and one of its kind in terms of engineering design. saturday was unveiled with excitement and pride. it was something people would always remember the school about, but to see it on the ground today and those who lost their lives because of it is just so tragic. we recognize even as we speak to
5:04 am
you now there are families whose hearts are being broken by the newser the thought that a loved one has perished. at the federal level, i had the opportunity to speak to the secretary of transportation. the federal agencies are here. we owe the people of the country and the people of this community, because part of this project is federal funding through the tiger grants that was passed through for this project that everyone took great pride in. the public deserves to know and the families deserve to know what went wrong. these people doing the engineering studies will tell was went wrong. that won't provide comfort to the families who lost a loved one, but we'll learn from these things.
5:05 am
there will be an exhausting review as to waterers were and what led to this catastrophic collapse. that work has already begun. i would be remiss if i didn't say, and i know this deeply affected the president and this institution. we rode over from the airport. i know this is difficult on him and everyone at f.i.u. and the first responders are one of a kind. they are trying to get in there to figure out if there is anybody they can save, and risking their own safety in the process. thank you. >> i'm dave downey, fire cheer of miami-dade fire rescue. we continue to operate in search and rescue mode.
5:06 am
we have our personnel on the scene. we are utilizing all the tools and equipment. the same personnel you have seen travel the world for various times of building collapses and search and rescue are the same men and women work out there. we are using all of our equipment and search k-9s and we'll continue to search this pile until we are sewer there are no other you are vierves. we were able to remove 9 victims early on. they have been transported to local hospitals. we'll remain on scene and help with the recovery efforts as well. this has been an incredibly tragic event and our hearts go out to the families of the victims and everybody involved. and rest assured the fire department is going to be here through the end. thank you. >> good evening.
5:07 am
i'm commander for the miami office. shortly after 1:30 this afternoon. we were dispatched to a bridge collapse. we responded along with first responders from miami-dade police and fire. we encountered several vehicles crushed as a result of this incident. we quickly shift into a search and rescue mode with miami-dade fire and police and that process continues as we speak. we have no further information to provide on the investigation. but we ask the media. this roadway will be shut down for an extended period of time. kennedy: they are discussing today's bridge collapse. several people are reported dead. at least 10 injured after a brand-new pedestrian bridge collapsed on to at least 8 cars.
5:08 am
here is a live look at the scene. it happened around 1:30 eastern time at florida national university. the bridge opened just five days ago. not long after the collapse there was a 950-ton prefab bridge built elsewhere and installed saturday. search and rescue personnel on the scene. hundreds of first responders reportedly there within minutes. we'll bring more updates as we get them. let's turn to politics. democrats smell blood in the water after conor lamb's surprise victory in the pennsylvania election. and it's not republicans bleeding, it's nancy pelosi. lamb actively campaigned against her knowing it would resonate with voters who elected donald

nancy pelosi the gift that keeps on giving and what will republicans do to keep her installed in power? >> go, nancy, go,ing as long as she is minority leader i'm fine with her in that position. the idea that co-hirns, a message that resonates? these are not things we feel any threat as republicans coming from nancy pelosi. democrats took a page out of the republican book by having him proactively say he was against nancy pelosi. the first vote you take as a member of congress is who you support for speaker of the house. if you are running against a democrat you just say really, you would vote for nancy pelosi? kennedy: it doesn't matter how you get the "w." it's the fact that this democrat won. there are curious democrats
5:12 am
across the country wondering if they can take a page out of his playbook. and who can they get to lead the party if the democrats take the house in the mid-term. >> conor lamb invited tim ryan to campaign with number the 18th like the of pennsylvania and they had some success. i think there are bigger fish to fry coming out of that election about messaging. but part of that messaging was his clear message to his voting base to say i am not going support nancy pelosi for leadership for speaker of the house. i think it's three leadership challenges, she has been there 15 years, she is a tremendous fundraiser. >> that kind of damaged scar tissue.
5:13 am
is that the path to the future? >> you heard jason's response. they can use her in ads. thee carries us on fox some nights. kennedy: she is a one-woman cottage industry. she and hillary clinton do provide so many fodder. one thing i respect about the republican party is there are dissenters. there are people like rand paul and jeff flake who speak truth to power when they are upset about something. you don't see that in the democratic party. >> rand paul -- paul ryan -- kennedy: i'm going to go to jason because you got your chance.
