leaving incredibly proud of what we accomplished. kennedy: his signature achievement, tax reform. but many fiscal conservatives glad to see the speaker go because he betrayed conservatives' ideals when he fought for the massive spending bill. but what does it mean for 2018 and who should and who will take his place. i will ask thomas massie who joins me from the halls of congress. welcome back to the show. >> it's not just the speaker who betrayed the american public. there were 145 republicans who voted for that omnibus bill. that was material, too. i think that's 145 republicans who are not qualified to be the speaker. kennedy: kid you vet for it?

-- did you vote for it? >> i did not. kennedy: if the republicans maintain the majority in the congress, who would you like to see take or paul ryan's spot? >> the most of liberty minded person here is justin amash. jim jordan would be a great speaker also. they are among the 90 republicans who didn't betray the american public by voting for the omnibus. they voted against it. kennedy: jim jordan says it's the worst legislation he has seen since he has been in congress. what did paul ryan get wrong? >> i think he basically gave up on this. more importantly, i think he wanted to spend the money in the omnibus bill. but walking back the speakership, what did he get wrong? he promised a better process where all members would be

included, where we wouldn't be dumped a bill on our desk and have no time to read it. he promised he would change things and what we got was less involvement and less time to read the bills. i would love to have a liberty-mind and conservative speaker. but what's most of important is to have somebody facilitate the process and we come to good answers, not quick answers. kennedy: the quick answers add up to deficits. paul ryan apparently betrayed what many consider to be his core principles. he legislated and ran the house like an unprincipled swamp monster for lack of a better term. is he leaving because it's convinced republicans are losing the house and it's better to get

out now because he'll be bored when he's out of the speakership? >> my kentucky gut says this man wants to be president. and he knows after another term as speaker and a few more omnibus bills like this he'll be wholly unsuitable to the republican base to be president. kennedy: and he wants to be president. do you think -- and i'll talk about this later in the show. from inside your caucus, does it seem like the man has put his ownself-interest ahead of -- his own self-under ahead of his party and the country? >> i wouldn't say that. it priorities may have got' misplaced. but i don't think it was his personal am tbhition the

speakership. i wish we had done a better job, but frankly he didn't. i saw john boehner a week ago in a restaurant and i told him i never thought it would say this, but i miss you. kennedy: i was going to ask who was worse, john boehner or paul ryan. >> from my own perspective i got more time on the floor and i got a bill that became law when john boehner was speaker. but we are not even aloud those votes anymore under the current speaker. it's a tough call, but i'm going to give it to speaker boehner. kennedy: we'll talk about speaker boehner later in the show. he made a stunning announcement that is a huge role reversal for him and it might be a good news for veterans. i want to talk about you and the

liberty movement going forward. i have said that sadly, people like you, like justin amash, andy biggs. you guys are a rare breed. is there any hope for the liberty minded smog forward in terms of this chaos? >> speaker ryan's announcement of retirement is about the 45th republican who has been afound it something else, resigned, retired or left in disgrace. that presents 4 opportunities in 46 districts that were held by republican. i think we'll get more liberty-minded people in 2018 and i can't wait. kennedy: if you are going to reach out to young people, the republican party is going to make any headway. it has to be with less government and more power for the individual.

that's the only thing that makes sense. thank you, i always appreciate it. we'll have more later in the show. but first up, more breaking news. president trump today met with defense secretary james mattis at the white house to discuss military options in syria. this comes after the president made no secret about how he fell about russia's plans to back up bashar al-assad. them sounds like fighting words. defense secretary mattis says the military will be ready to go if they are. >> we are still assessing the intelligence ourselves and our allies, we are still work on

this. we stand by with military options that are appropriate as the president determines. ken report u.s.s. donald cook is in position to carry out an attack, and an aircraft carrier group is en route. reporter: there was a phone call tonight initiated by israel between prime minister netanyahu and vladimir putin. it doesn't sound like to was a lot of harmony in this particular phone call. he urged netanyahu to refrain from any moves that could further destabilize the situation, hinting to that monday airstrike. believed to be the responsibility of israel. the prime minister's office said israel will never allow an

iranian presence in syria. syrian army is on the move. troops are vac wear iting bases. syrian planes are being moved to air fields with strong russian presence. they claimed any u.s. missiles would be shot down. wrush continues to deny the chemical attack took place in the first place. a lieutenant general in the russian army insisted the chemical attack was staged and filmed by a group known as the white helmet who respond to attacks. they have been accused of providing misinformation for the purpose of propaganda. the world health organization said 5. >> 0 civilians have been treated for exposure for exposure to some type of toxic chemical. they are sending a team to douma

where the alleged attack took place. kennedy: you are in jerusalem, are people there coming to terms with the fact that military action is inevitable? >> take into account eurocon, they put out a warning to avoid this area in the event of military strikes. there is only one airline that flies directly over syria and that is lebanon's middle eastern air. for moment they are rerouting flights around syrian air space. kennedy: what are the range of options available to the president if he decides to take action and what would a first strike look like? the vice chief of staff lieutenant general thomas

mcinerney. is military action inevitable? >> well, i think there is a high probability that it is. we are assessing right now, and i think as secretary of defense mattis indicated. relooking at the intelligence and getting all the facts. we want to be absolutely sure. we have cases like the white hats. we have cases where al-nusra was looking at chlorine stocks. i feel comfortable when the president makes his decision it will be 100% verified it was assad's regime that made this attack. kennedy: the american people don't have the stomach for a pro protracted war. will this be shock and awe? >> it will be quick, and the fact is we are trying to bring

together a coalition of the willing. the u.k., france, the u.s., egypt, saudis, clearly, jordanians, the emirati states. it's important to have a combined u.s. and arab force to make this attack in syria when the final decision is made. so that's what's taking some of the time right now. but it's not going to be a 7-day or 10-day exesh size, i believe. it will be short and quick and decisive. i would take out his whole -- the whole syrian air force. kennedy: that's another question i have, whether the missile strike did any good because those planes wirp and flying right away. this is something you point out, there is tremendous down side here, and it's not clear that we have a focused strategy moving forward. now you have got a lot of tough

talk between the u.s. and russia. what happens if we hit russian soldiers and planes? >> let me correct you slightly. there is no real focus on a syrian strategy. we do not want to hit and kill russians. that's important. i have no problem with the iranians. we do know the syrian air force is embedding themselves with the russian forces. kennedy: and the russians said they will shoot down any u.s. missiles targeted at syrians. >> that's correct. the fact is they have capable missiles over there and the s-300 and 400s and fighters. here is what our problem has been. this fake news of russian collaboration collusion that the

democratic party left with president obama's administration is hurting our relationship with the russians. you are asking the right questions. after we make this strike, what is syria going look like? we need a key hernlt strategy which means russians need to be heavily involved to to diplomatically solve the syrian problem. kennedy: not to cut you off, we are up against a hard break. but i want to bring something you mentioned. that is the political element. it will get politicized when congress grows more upset unless syria pose an imminent threat to the united states, there has to be authorization for a move like this. >> until we get rid of the

miller commission, and his group, until we get rid of him, that's hurting our national security. he's been on a witch hunt. they have found no russian collusion. let's put it together. that's the responsibility of the republican leadership to make that go away because they haven't found anything. he does not have an unlimited schedule. kennedy: we are talking about that one another day because there are a lot of republicans who would push back on the idea of firing mueller. and then we can go ahead without that distraction. but there are certainly very, very high stakes here. coming up, a new battle front opened up in the mueller investigation. isn't this whole messy party

base will love it and he can play the victim. do you think he'll pull the trigger and fire bob muler? >> i hope not. but i long ago gave up saying donald trump wouldn't do things. because he's irrational. right now he's furious. there are people in the white house who can prevent him from doing that. kennedy: he's convinced he can do it. >> politically the fact that you have republican senators coming out and saying they are going to take steps to protect, mueller. the judiciary committee would vote. he needs to take a step back. he has serious things going on. kennedy: it's still a question

that the president's detractors and supporters wrestle with. can he fire bob mueller? >> what they are proposing with the bipartisan legislation is he cannot fire mueller without cause. the big question is did mueller have anything to do with the fbi raid which as an attorney i find extremely, extremely disturbing. we are talking about a situation where the fourth and fifth amendment of the u.s. constitution, the basic right to attorney-client privilege has been violated of the president of the united states it's highly likely almost 100% certain privileged communications were seeds. there is zero reason. kennedy: there are exceptions to that, right? they could have asked for a subpoena for the documents. we are talk about every single document.

they could have gone the them by subpoena. there is no evidence that the trump administration destroyed evidence. kennedy: there have to be certain elements and relationships and mechanisms that are sacred in there is country. >> i'm not a lawyer, so i am not a legal expert here. but you know who is? a guy named george conway. kellyanne conway's husband. he's tweeting this is perfectly within the justice department statutes. he has gone rogue on twitter. kennedy: there could be these gray areas of disagreement. there is still a lot of discussion about whether a sitting president can be indicted. >> the fact that republicans like rod rosenstein who is a republican appointee, the southern district of new york
