gerri: complicated. nafta countries are nowhere near close to deal. labor and energy. cheryl: all of this coming as canadian prime minister trudeau strikes a positive note in an interview with susan lee at the economic club of new york yesterday. >> it's right down to sort of the last conversations and we know that those last conversations in any deal are extremely important so i'm feeling positive about this, but it won't be done until it's done and people are working very hard on it right now. cheryl: house speaker paul ryan said the republican-controlled copying would need to see a new nafta deal by yesterday to give lawmakers a chance to approve it this year. gerri: great susan lee interview. cheryl: really was.

protection offering protections to kim jong un if the north korean leader agrees to give up nuclear weapons this comes after kim threaten to cancel summit. >> president trump says he thinks kim jong un wants to strike a deal but potential threats of now backing out of the summit could be due to chinese influence. the president says, though, there's still communications going on with the north koreans about proceeding forward. >> north korea is talking to us about times and everything else as though nothing happened. will it happen, will we be going on that very special date and can some great things happen, you know, we will be looking at it very soon. >> north korea rejected comments by bolton, libya was a model to follow for denuclearization, on thursday, though, the president said he's willing to offer security protections to the

north. >> we are willing to do a lot. he's willing to i think do a lot also and we will have a good relationship assuming we have the meeting and assuming something comes of it, he will get protection that is will be very strong. sir yeah never -- syria never had protections. you look at libya, they didn't have protection, they had the exact opposite. that was absolute decimation. >> president trump would not say if he's willing to reduce troop levels in the korean peninsula. gerri: the president set to meet with secretary general antonio gutiérrez, discuss north korea and reform.

was up against regulartory -- regulatory deadline. the incident involved internal documents used for internal purposes and no customers were negatively impacted. not sure that means it's okay. gerri: why were they doing it. that's not clear. big story on paypal shelling out big bucks to buy start-up company. tracee: it's buying $2.2 billion deal, gives paypal access to 500 small businesses around the world that use technology to process customer technologies involving credit cards. it also puts paypal in direct competition with square, a similarly-operated financial services and mobile payment company founded by twitter ceo swrak -- jack dorsey.

volcano. geologists say the eruption was small but warned it could be the first in a series of explosions. that's what's happening now, cheryl. cheryl: poor people. well, back here on the mainland a lot of breaking news and it's coming from china, so china's foreign ministry overnight denying reports that it's trade delegation is offering to cut its annual trade sur plus the u.s. by $200 billion, let's bring in david nelson, good morning. >> good morning. cheryl: we had report that china had offered trump $200 billion a cut in the u.s. trade deficit in order to get discussions moving, kind of bring zte back into the fold, now we are getting denial from the chinese foreign minister, is this just tough talk, is this dealing, what is this? >> it's all part of the dance. we are witnessing it in realtime. 200 billion would be a big number. i would be surprised.

it would take us a while to deliver on such an offer. but it doesn't address the real concern here and that's the theft of intellectual property and a lot of what china is offering right now doesn't address that and clearly at this point china is an adversary, adversary in almost every level, every sense of the word, geopolitical, trade, i think the president needs to take tough talk here, i get the attraction of trying to get deal, something you can take to homeland, especially in election year, i hope we go for the big stuff. cheryl: even though the chinese are denying this, it's worth bringing up what "the new york times" are reporting and are quoting source that is have been briefed on the negotiations. white house i don't know, but anyway, basically what they say at "the new york times" is that they want china is asking the u.s. to set aside tariffs and investment reintrikses that threaten against companies, this is about zte, that would mean

lifting sanctions on zte and relaxes expert controls that u.s. companies can't sell technology to china, the chinese in all of this still want our intellectual property, they still want our technology. >> zte is an important issue here, it's one thing to overloom the aggressions with regard to sanctions on iran but it's another when you're talking about the equipment and military experts believe some of the infrastructure equipment is a national security threat. i would need to see assurances here. i'm not inside the room, cheryl, i would hope that somehow those concerns would be addressed. >> some analysts have said that reduction in the trade deficit at tend of the day is somewhat meaningless. >> it's not meaningless. we certainly go a long way and respond to that, we are hoping for that, look, this is just the beginning of a long fight here, this is the second round, we started off in china, now we have the talks in washington, we

meeting, the fact that this came right after ward, you read the tea leaves and see where we are at right now. cheryl: agreed to give up nuclear weapons and years later he was murdered. and out of power. is kim jong un -- do you think that the president is making a mistake here by saying, we will protect you, kim jong un, if you come to the table? >> i think it's the only option you have right now so give assurances for him to denuclearize, kim jong un sees his nuclear weapons as life insurance policy essentially, he's looked at all the dictators that have been overthrown such as gadhafi, he saw in 2003, when he agree today get rid of weapons of has destruction, years later, un-backed rebel forces overthrew him and murdered him essentially he lost all of his power and control and

that is what the kim's know. their power is based upon having supreme power and overtaking south korea. i don't think he sees a win in this in any way, shape or form right now. cheryl: robin, i want you to listen to the president himself and his tone when talking about the libya an until all of this, listen. >> the libyan model isn't a model that we have at all when we are thinking of north korea n libya we decimated that country. that country was decimated. there was no deal to keep gaddafi. cheryl: he will make a deal with kim jong un. >> right, this administration has done thing very well which is to pull successful playbooks from prior administrations and one thing we know about donald trump is that he does not like to reveal his cards, so i really don't think that he wanted bolton to say that to the media even if that was their intent

all along to use that play book, i don't think donald trump would ever dare want that out. cheryl: i want to reference, jesse, what robin is talking about the fact that president trump seem today contradict john bolton, john bolton is the one that had tougher rhetoric can the north koreans thanked seems possibly to be one of the reason that is kim jong un and the north koreans are starting to pull back a little bit. >> well, the kim regime which is three generations has constitution that they will overcome south korea reunite the peninsula, if they sacrifice nuclear weapons which is again the life insurance policy for his regime, they lose power. if he does decide to denuclearize and build a stronger economy, what are his people going to do, overthrow him. he doesn't have a lot of assurances right now without being dictator. cheryl: jess, robin, complicated. a lot of voices involved.

cheryl: welcome back, let's get you caught up on what's happening now. taking a look at u.s. stock market futures on friday, we are actually starting to kind of build up here in the premarket, the dow is now up 60 in the premarket, s&p up 5, nasdaq up 21. well, gina haspel has been confirmed as the first male to lead the cia. several republicans opposed haspel's nomination citing interrogation. haspel is only the second first named cia director after spending almost her entire

career under cover. well, president trump is going to be meeting with the united nations secretary general antonio gutiérrez today, the un and the trump administration have been at odds over member nations contributing their fair share to the organization. gutiérrez has made it one of his missions to reform the un and more importantly its budget. president trump's attorney rudy giuliani is now saying that he's had hopeful talks with robert mueller's team with possible interview with the president. >> our job is to make sure that he gets a fair hearing from mueller. we are not convinced that he will, but we had the first hopeful communication with them last night. it was a good-faith attempt to really narrow the focus quite dramatically. cheryl: and the mueller probe to investigate whether the trump campaign colluded with russia during 2016 election has been underway for just now over a year. gerri, we are now in year two of the mueller probe.

have nothing to lose here? >> i have to be honest with you, he's done a great job running cbs. he's been there forever. he's done a great job, i don't think this is necessarily in cbs' interest to hook up with viacom. viacom in the last few years a lot of channels have in the done so great. mtv is going downhill, nickelodeon probably the most viable. the stock reflected the lack of interest really in those channels where cbs has tons and tons of hits. look at survivor, everybody knows survivor, the big bank theory at cbs. so i think, you know, it's very interesting. this is not over yet, it's not over by a long shot. cbs stock looks a lot better than viacom, up trend than down trend. it's a big battle. i think it's going to cost a lot of money going through all the legal battles. gerri: should we invest that he

has 200 million-dollar gold parachute, if it doesn't work out, he has to leave, it's not so bad, is it? >> that's not necessarily great for cbs, for cbs shareholders, he's done a great job with the company. gerri: good point. >> contract up to 2021. i don't know anything about the gold parachute that you're talking about. gerri: the stock reflects that, right, the stock has been on fire while others in categories have not. i think the big question here is that can it actually stop sherry, two folks fighting each other, can cbs stop her from forcing her to combine with viacom? >> they will try, this is what i'm saying, it's not over by a long shot. gerri: it's already ugly, my friend. so let's talk more broadly about the media landscape because there's so many deals going on right now, disney and the deal to buy parts of 21st century

fox, the parent of this network, at&t and time warner in front of a judge right tbhow the deal. lots going on and, you know, will we see major changes in the media landscape, what will happen next? >> there are changes, the merger is very positive, positive for disney, stock price has rallied since then, fox is in up friend. that's positive. that's expected to go through in summer of 2019. that's pretty much a done deal. the justice department, however, is involved with at&t merger, antitrust issues because they are thinking it's going to be back for consumers to have someone that owns a tv distribution company and also who is creating and selling the content so that's the problem with that and i don't think the judge is supposed to come out with ruling on that until june, the tv landscaping is changing mainly because people are not watching as much programming on tv, they are watching things on the internet. gerri: don't tell people that.

gerri: crude trading $80 a barrel in london for the first time since 2014. scott shellady. great to see you. what's the impact on investors from this move? >> there's a silver lining somewhere. when you see bret trade up, the economy is picking up in europe and obviously in the states. here is the big deal, we will wrestle with the 3, 3% tenure and 3-gallons of gas in states too, the battle of the 3's, we want to normalize and get back to central banks out of the picture, we will have to recalibrate first, we are in recalibration stage of moving onto normalization while the market gets used to and starts to court and once that's over with, we can think about what's going on, right now we are getting used to each other. cheryl: the story will continue today for markets.
