yourself, you need not fear the results of 100 battles. that's it for us tonight. thanks for being with us, and good night from new york. kennedy: we have breaking news now on president trump's canceling of next month's big meeting with north korean dictator kim jong-un. north korea state media reporting that the state is willing to resolve issues any time. the president called everything out because of a statement they made, meet us in a meeting room or encounter us on nuclear to nuclear showdown. and they also called vice president pence a political dummy.
8:01 pm
that didn't sit well with the president and what the press is calling an extraordinary letter president trump wrote. then this afternoon at the white house the president warned kim jong-un that the u.s. military was ready to respond to any foolish or reckless act by the north. but the ball is still have much in little kim's court. president trump: when kim jong-un chooses to engage in constructive dialogue and actions, i am waiting. in the meantime, our very strong sanctions by far the strongest sanctions ever imposed, and
8:02 pm
maximum pressure campaign will continue as it has been continuing. but no matter what happens. and what we do, we'll never ever compromise the safety and security of the united states of america. kennedy: did the north get spooked? and are they now crawling back into our arms? , a senior member of the foreign affairs committee, congressman, welcome to the show. what were your first thoughts question you read that letter from the -- thoughts when you read that letter to kim jong-un. >> i think the president has done the right thing. he's been called a master negotiator, and i think he has shown and lot of political savvy in the way he handled this. he wants peace. he wants a denuclearized korean
8:03 pm
peninsula. and for the first time we may be on our way to this. he knows when to walk away from a deal. there has been a pattern with the north koreans. we saw it under the clinton, bush and obama administration. and we are seeing that to some degree now. i would stloing urge the president, he's looking at it the way ronald reagan did when he dealt with the soviets. reagan used to say trust but verify. kennedy: we heard that phrase a lot lately. you have to modify that phrase. because we are dealing with an entirely different regime at a different point in modern history. but let's talk about the president's tone in the letter. it seems to so far have worked. are you surprised -- we'll get to the tone in a second. are you surprised north korea capitulated and made the
8:04 pm
statement they did so quickly? and what does that say about their desperation or the situation they are in? >> i think the president knows you have to be -- the party who wants the deal the most of is oftentimes going to get the shortened of the stick here. the president realizes that. i think the north koreans realize that as well. that's why it's important we put maximum pressure on that, whether it's sanctions working with our allies in the region or other parts of the world. china continues to be the key. north korea is a great value to china. they basically use them as a way to annoy us to make it challenging to put us off balance. so we need to stand up to china as well. and we need to actually consider sanctions with respect to china if they don't get north korea to cooperate as well. kennedy: i like that china has
8:05 pm
been ostracized in this process. one thing i think is very evident. when china went back to north korea, that's when the tone reshifted to something much more negative and hostile. obviously they are hurting in the north. the sanctions on some level are absolutely working. and the people are starving. but what you are seeing is people in the upper echelons of the military and the government, they are also obviously hurting. they are putting pressure on kim jong-un in a way that is unknowable to us and is evident from this turn-about from them. do you think the singapore meeting is still going to happen in leave it this strange development we have seen today? >> we just don't know. it's probably likely it won't happen september 12. it may be somewhere down the road. but we can't want this so much
8:06 pm
that they know they have us over a barrel. i think that's what the president understands here. he's a great negotiator. he's willing to take risks, and sometimes that's important in getting something other administrations have failed. kennedy: you meant june 12. >> excuse me, june 12. kennedy: there needs to be a diplomatic recalibration. i think we are going to see that. you are absolutely right. obviously the obama administration wanted the iran deal so badly that the deal was ultimately compromise and we don't know what the resolution for that is going to be. we are going to talk about it throughout the show. thank you for your time. so, the north koreans say they want to come back to the table. but is it possible they are just playing more games?
8:07 pm
tara moller joins me. tara, welcome back. at first we were just going to discuss the president and the letter which -- again, not a series of tweets. not something that read like it was impulsively crafted. obviously some direct but softer language than we have seen in the past. is there something about the tone of the letter that brought a change in tone from north korea? >> well, i think what you saw in the letter was president trump was a bit worried about two things. one, the potential that the north koreans could cancel and pull out and then the united states would be on the defensive responding to the north koreans or he was worried the summit was going to happen and they are not adequately prepared to get the most of positive outcome.
8:08 pm
you don't want to have the meeting you don't think it will be productive. i think there could be been a bit more ground work laid that would get us to a point that did not make for this scenario. you have the north koreans responding positively. are we going to have pler writing back and forth until june 12? right now it is postponed with a window of opportunity opened top restart the process. i am okay with what's going on as long as we don't see things heating up and missiles launching. kennedy: you don't want to see people hurt and a full-on conflict on the north korean peninsula. it seems like there is a lot of heated rhetoric here. but it's such a delicate dance. it can go either way at any moment. when it goes badly, the consequences are incredibly dire.
8:09 pm
there was this resignation today when the president sent that letter. the united states can't keep capitulating to north korea with naive good intentions like they have in the past. the president got up and walked away. do you think that buying more time will ultimately be better for the peace process if that is what the president is doing? >> we spoke about this a week or so ago and said the president may very well walk away, and it turns out he did. while all four are moving towards this summit. i do think the process this administration took from the outset was a bit rough. i think there could have been more cautiousness to it. there was no need to rush out and schedule for june 12. it takes a lot of time, a lot of planning. behind the scenes meetings to make sure you are getting the
8:10 pm
proper assurances from the north koreans. i think the trump administration realized there were different understands of denuclearization and the prisoner release. and what was destroyed in the underground tunnel. but that's unrelated to the nitty-gritty of a nuclear agreement. i think the north koreans wanted a more phased-in approach. and letters from people like john bolton touting the libya model got the north koreans potentially worried or the north koreans were just playing us all along. perhaps this is part of their strategy. they do this historically so we shouldn't be so surprised. one word of optimism.
8:11 pm
i don't think this is over yet. i would like to see this done in a more carefully planned traditional diplomatic way and see if we can get to some sort of summit or multi lateral talks. kennedy: i don't know about the multi lateral part. i don't know how many people we can trust. but i do share your enthusiasm for seeing this get done and have it done right. i don't think this is a traditional administration. i don't think they will do anything in a traditional template. we have to wait and see. but as of this last hour we are more hopeful than we were earlier in the day. the president's critics seem to be delighting in the summit cancellation. here is how joy behar treated the news. >> that nobel peace prize, there it goes.
8:12 pm
what deal has he been closed. the wall has not been closed. he said he's going to drain the swamp. the tax plan was pushed through. kennedy: she is benefiting from that tax bill. put a cork tonight, joy. nancy pelosi said kim jong-un must be having a gigglefest. and the president trump letter sound like a valentine. >> clearly he didn't know what was getting into. now he's walk away from it in this very chummy, palsy walsy letter. ken were we know joy and nancy are freergt the president to fail. very nice, ladies.
8:13 pm
joining me, jamie wine astein along with fox news political analyst jehmu greene and retired u.s. marine corps bomb technician johnny joey jones. triple j. i saw that today. that's a radio station in australia. i like it have much. jamie, i wasn't surprised to see people delighting in the president's letter because to them it seemed like a failure. if the president fails it must be good. they are not even considering the horrible consequences. i thought it was an immature response. >> after the news broke i visited the candyland called twitter. everybody used the news to reinforce their competing positions.
8:14 pm
so everyone is right. this is a very difficult situation. president trump was given a difficult hand. i'm a critic of president trump. but this is not an easy position he's in. this is a hail mary. other position is allowing north korea to get a nuclear missile that could reach the united states, or a war that would kill millions of people. it will take a strategic decision for kim jong-un to say i don't want to live the same life my father and grandfather lived and give up his nuclear arsenal. let's cut the president a little slack. this is not easy no matter who is in office. kennedy: what's tougher, this process or peace in the middle east. >> i think they are both tough enough. i have to say, dear democrats, taunting the man with nuclear codes is not a good look.
8:15 pm
moving closer to nuclear war is not a laughing matter. there are a lot of things i want donald trump to fail on, dehumanizing immigrants and taking away people's healthcare. but denuclearization of the korean peninsula is not something i want the president to fail on. we need to get to the place where we understand we are the opposition party, but there are some things we need to be the biggest cheerleaders for and need to put ideas on the table around disciplined diplomacy a and not we are right and he was wrong. i don't want a nuclear war. kennedy: i agree with you completely. this is something that goes beyond politics. there are moms and babies dying in labor camps over there. the second he feels like his life and country are threatened, he's going to kill them all. i talked about it on the show
8:16 pm
with experts, and i think what jehmu is saying, sometimes we seat bombastic impulsive tone from the president when he's upset about something. there is a tweet storm of four or five in a row. and we didn't see that here. supposedly he dictated every word of the letter and slept on it before he sent it. >> we don't know what we don't know. i don't know this isn't part of a bigger strategy. so it's not that i'm a trump defender. he may be most of upset with john mccain because he already has the nickname maverick. i think most of importantly, we didn't know a naval blockade would get nukes out of cuba. i would have hated to have been on a show criticizing president kennedy back then. we have a nuclear side that may
