speak today about it. it wasn't entirely accurate he's doing what no other administration has been able to do. north korea's sovereignty and place among the nations of the world, that would have been a much easier feat for an earlier administration. if you north korea is such and oppressive dictatorial regime, that would and big concession. fit gets them to the go nuclearize maybe it's worth it. but i think the president is overselling it a little bit. kennedy: i know he wants this to work out. everyone wants it to work out. but you are absolutely right. this is still a place where millions of people are slaughtered at the hand of communist tyrants. and we can't lose sight of that.

but that can't be the overriding force going into these negotiations. there has to be some bit of optimism that there is a glimmer of hope within his dark heart. and by appealing to his ego, perhaps you can bring him into diplomatic light. >> this will be the challenge for the president. he's famously a self-proclaimed master deal maker and far be it from me to question his deal-making skills. but he honed the world of new york city real estate and brought the zero sum attitude into his governing style. you see it often in trade negotiations. this idea you try to screw ther guy before he can screw. if they are winning in a trade deal it means we are losing. i don't think that's the type of approach that will produce a

productive outcome. kennedy: i think it' the zero sum approach that brought us here. it will be interesting to see if the approach changes once they get into a room. you know the president operates on many different levels. one of them being unpredictability. but in equal measure he's also very charming. and he uses those tools adeptly. we don't know what the end game is. that's why this thing is so intriguing and it's exciting. the end game could be so incredibly unthinkably positive. it's dangerous to put that cart before this horse. but it's a very intriguing idea. will you come back to new york and hang out sometime and tell us about your travails in the white house? >> any time. >> what about the military and foreign policy angles?

the soviet union. militarily they have to believe that we mean it when we say we don't want to change the regime, but we are not leaving south korea. they are our ally. we are staying there. and they de facto admitted to that. they admitted all right, you can be friends with them and we won't object every time you do an exercise. we have to sell that to them, if you sign this we really won't try to change your regime. ultimately that's why they made the effort and spent the money to get the nukes. kennedy: let's talk about shinzo abe. they take a much tougher stance than some of our allies in the region. what is shinzo abe saying to the president? >> what the japanese are saying is please tell us that you

leaving korea is not on the table. please tell us that you leaving the air base and naval base in japan, please tell us you are not going to leave touts western pacific. there is a concern for the japanese the north koreans will say we'll keep it to 20 nukes if you leave okinawa in japan and we'll sign a peace treaty. the japanese are saying that's not on the table because you are our primary defense partner. australia, taiwan, japan, we all count on the americans being here. the way trump has been, pay your bill or we won't defend you. kennedy: that's a fair request regardless of how much people may despise this president. that's a fair thing to ask. >> tying it to some sort of or

played. but things that are hard to solve are hard to solve. it's a good thing to have these conversations, and we want to share that kind of optimism. it's preferable to where we were during the republican presidential primary in 2016. we are in a much better place now. but i think americans are right to be rationally suspicion. can anything happen? it's a hard problem to solve. kennedy: we want denuclearization. south korea definitely wants it. but how do we get there from where we are at right now? >> it will be a process. i would give the president some credit because he has been very transparent through this process. he said unlike the past administration that didn't want congress to play a part in the iran deal. he talked about the senate

approving this being a treaty. but he says he doesn't expect a deal to be there. i know a lot of people said this president is rushing it. but he took a step back and said we have got to get to know each other. kennedy: that's a better way to change your story. raising expectations it means no matter what happens, you will fall short of them. but if you are realistic and honest with people invested in this, that makes you more trustworthy. bre, to lawrence's point, the president almost has a better foreign policy team than domestic team. it seems like a lot of the distractions and leaks come from the domestic side. though i might disagree fundamentally with mike pompeo or john bolton, it does seem like they are the calmer part of his administration. >> i would agree with that. the foreign policy team is

dealing with reality. the domestic side of things you watch and heart news coming out of the white house, you are scratching your head wondering how that could be true. i think the foreign policy team seize we are a lot bigger, stronger and tougher than north korea. and that's the position we'll project and the posture we'll have when we enter into these negotiations. a lot of the american people are refreshed by that attitude. >> i think when it comes to the foreign policy side. that's a battle of the ideas. the battle of john bolton versus mike pompeo. what they feel. tariffs have been involved in this and sanctions. when it comes to the actual domestic stuff it's a battle of

people trying to fight each other basketball. they are not debating each other. i don't like you. a lot of the people complaining about leaking, the people on tv are some of the leaks as well. it's a lot of mess when it comes to domestic. >> it's interesting to know john bolton seems to be sidelined in this process. this whole career has been denuclearization of the korean peninsula. he hasn't been in the last two months a key player in this. kennedy: he's going. >> even when you look at the president, he talked about how they are afraid of john bolton. i think john bolton has become the trump bad cop. kennedy: i think you are right. i think the president appreciates that john bolton really gets under their skin.

kennedy: it's interesting because there are some areas of bipartisanship you don't want to see come to fruition like infrastructure it's incredibly expensive. we can't afford it. but republicans and democrats, for some reason they both love it. the criminal justice reform and states rights and cannabis legality, those are good areas. >> it's happening from the bottom up. we only have state legal marijuana because of the ballot process. it's wildly popular in america. americans believe the federal government shouldn't be involved in state government experiments in legalizing marijuana. so you can tell republicans, this is a federalism issue. you used to care about this. you can tell jeff sessions the same thing the u.s. attorneys told him.

revelations. >> the problem with giuliani is he's a politician. politicians speak a lot. he could make a point and just shut up. and i think that complicates the matter. jay sekulow is an attorney. he dabbles in politics. but he's really a legal mind. i understand they want him to be an attack dog. but i think he's hurting. and i think jay sekulow did a better job. kennedy: there is something to be said for a politician who understands the law. he fills in a lot of the gaps the president needs. i think giuliani would be more effective if he were speaking his mind and talking to the president and preparing him for what lies ahead on this legal road, but maybe in the background a little bit. >> i think this decision to go after stormy daniels in a very

personal way is totally unnecessary. it's fine to say her facts don't add up. here are some factual holes in the claims she is making. that's a different argument than saying let's not listen to her at all because i don't like the profession she does. he got into trouble by saying the first lady doesn't believe stormy daniels. her spokesperson says rudy giuliani hasn't talked to the first lady about that. ultimately, is it going to be impeached or not. that's a public, popular opinion. also the negotiations, does he testify to mueller and under what conditions. that's a largely public, out there way of negotiations. >> it's a way of putting pressure on the situation
