>> this has legitimacy. when trump in the 80s talk about japan and by enough america and all the trade problems was kind of imaginary. the chinese problem is legitimate. you're not talking the companies buying our technology. the companies are intertwined and partially owned one way or the other by the government. it's a little bit more of a security issue than just saying people in germany can't invest in our technology companies. so without the chinese money what are we going to do. it not like that. we are in a position to take on this ongoing problem where they basically walk all over intellectual property and try to buy or apply somehow. cheryl: that have not been addressed up until now. usually national security for the guys administration. what about american companies

and boeing, caterpillar. those are the first two games. there'll be some side effects. they'll be good for u.s. companies. >> something is all good and apple makes the phones in china. so there's problems with the logic as well, what the government can have them not give as much. as far as the market impact, and their economy might be heading towards a recession. however, they're not giving giving up on buying treasury bonds. and they are the biggest donor. i don't want to say it's all talk now because it's not all talk at this point. it makes less sense than dealing with china. it hasn't hit the consumer that this is going to happen. investors don't know even if it does happen at the level of the

the knee-jerk. monday, june 25th. good morning, everybody. i'm cheryl casone. gerri: i'm gerri willis. cannot wait to hear all about. >> you listening? yeah, they probably are. we have got a big story of coors brewing since last week continuing today. divided republicans expected this week to try their hand again on immigration reform. house lawmakers fighting over competing bills that failed to pass the more conservative measure last week on a compromise bill. making matters more difficult for them. president trump taken a harder line on illegal immigration saying he would like to strip illegal immigrants of their right to due process. some congressional republicans are facing tough tough reelection races than they are not just ready to go that far at this point.

justin walden conservative columnist christine. good morning. i want to show you the most recent polling we have on this and get your reaction. this is a cbs news poll. 72% are opposed. to separating families at the border. 53% of the entire poll say they oppose it strongly. this is across-the-board, across party lines. america's same stop this. >> that is true. however, if you poll just republican voters come a slim majority of them actually do support separating families at the border. this is such a polarizing issue. republicans are acting to vote on paul ryan's bill this week, which is some sort of compromise that would provide $25 billion in funding for border wall and would keep the migrant families intact and also provide amnesty for about 700,000 dreamers. amnesty makers would get to

petition for their parents and later brought them here illegally are hired a smuggler. some are concerned this could incentivize waves of migrants coming from central america. the bill doesn't include any language requiring five or preventing grants for sanctuary cities. trump supporters will find a lot of issues with this bill. even if republicans are able to a proved this bill and come together comments almost doomed for failure in the senate because democrats hold enough seats in getting the 60 votes they need to pass legislation. it's unclear how we come to some sort of compromise. >> i agree with you. the other part of the cbs poll want to show you in this gives us a party picture of all of this and the separation of children from their families, which the executive order was signed but now they've got to figure out how to reunite the family. treatment of families, does that impact your vote in the

midterms. 43% of republicans and 55% of independents. this is a big issue for the midterms good >> i think it is, especially as long as those images continue to go on. the challenge is pretty simple math actually. if you're in a republican district, any congressional district, you are okay lining up at the president. but if you are just on the edge in a swing district are things look a little dicey in terms of independents, you really run the risk if you line up behind the president on this particular issue. it's an extremely emotional issue. the images speak for themselves. it is a tough one for republicans. >> it's tough for republicans because there's a lot of fighting we saw last week in what happened with the two failed bills in the house. listen to what mcauliffe said on "fox news sunday" about all of this and the fact that even when it came to daca there was

nothing achieved. listen. >> every democrat voted against a very rational daca six. they've been talking for a year now. we had a bill before that would resolve this issue, legalize and everyone of them voted against that. i don't think that's operating in good faith. >> finding that middle ground seems to be tough for republicans at this point. >> they've become the party of obstructionism. they are once bringing this compromise bills to the table. it is clear that something must be done. each month we are apprehending tens of thousands of migrants that are border and they are posing a significant cost to taxpayers who have to foot the bill for housing, food, schooling and all kinds of other things while people go through the legal system.

actually hurt american corporations. also going to hurt american consumers. >> you are looking at the markets down three digits. the dow down three digits this morning. weather slowed the economy? could it push it into recession? >> certainly. if we've got to produce all of ours deal or sheep here in manhattan, it's not going to happen. the same thing with all of these other good. we have the good fortune where we can rely on partners in europe and china and we don't have to produce everything ourselves. that is good for american business. the american chamber of commerce is saying this is a real disaster. >> the dow down 160 points this morning. christine nygaard say nobody wins in a trade war. that is her analysis and it seems like you agree. what do you say? >> for certain. this is pricing to market that will slow growth potential he

paid the bigger the trade barriers, the more the taxes are, the more interference with the free market. that is not helpful for the american economy or the consumer. gerri: interesting unintended consequence you are alluding to at the beginning of this interview. ge complaining the new regime with it plans making mri scanners may not be able to use the part from its own plants in china because they will face some kind of huge terrace. at the end of the day, american companies getting hit could this depress earnings in the second quarter? >> of course. we should be giving ge and award a thank you for producing all of these things including what their chinese inputs, their ingredients. if we are going to start harming american companies, what is not going to do for the average american worker. it's not going to be helpful at
