trump lashing out on google and operating system. president trump tweeted, i told you so, the european union slapped fine at one of our great companies, google. president trump accused eu on engaging unfair practices and threatened to impose tariffs. gerri: people don't criticize the fed but the eu. those proposed car tariffs, drawing heavy criticism as a hearing in washington. adam: we will get more on that part of the story from edward lawrence. >> the congress department received 2300 comments about not imposing up to 25% tariffs on auto parts and automobiles being imported into the united states, the commerce, the vast majority of those to department was

against imposing tariffs. they drove their cars made in the united states around the commerce department and capital, car companies say price of a car made here would increase by $2,000 if the tariffs go into effect, the car of imported car would go up to $6,000. insurance companies say rates will increase 2.7% because the cost of parts would be more, more to repair the car and the most harsh comments came from european union and canada, canada saying tariffs would have -- >> if couldn't measures were to be imposed of auto sect or, the number of u.s. jobs lost would rise from 195,000 to 264,000 high-paying manufacturing jobs, these jobs could be lost to the

adam: next meeting from putin from russia could take place as early as this fall. gerri: microsoft coming in hot with solid earnings beating analysts expectations. adam: hillary vaughn, good morning, to you, hillary. >> hey, good morning, adam and gerri, microsoft's revenue topped new territory climbing the $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time ever. the company is making big gains in the cloud computing space and becoming a power player but second, of course, to amazon who owns that space, the business is bringing microsoft huge growth as they convince customers that are running software to take advantage of cloud services, being out the cloud business shares rising 40% in the past year. microsoft is trading higher in premarket this morning. gerri: tesla shares are running out of road, what's going on there? >> the stock is hitting a bit of

hit, gerri, customers are ditching their model 3 orders because they don't want to wait any longer. refunds now outpaced deposits for tesla model 3. the wait time is about 4 months to a year but customers buying the most budget-friendly version may not get behind the wheel until 2020 and tesla is also trading higher in premarket this good morning. adam: let's talk about this, peculiar looking new airplane from air bus, have you seen this? that's what's happening now, gerri. gerri: microsoft firing on all sill ders, the company making more money than wall street expected, cloud business soarings, sales of office 365 software surface tablet, gaming products all on tear. microsoft is up 22% so far this year. if it holds gains, microsoft shares would have risen by double digits in a row. imagine that, michael nunes, deputy editor, michael, welcome, good to have you here. i guess the eu find the new rule doesn't really go into effect in 90 days, the company is taking the charge right away in second quarter and wipe out almost every bit of earnings, this has been a strong company but i have to tell you it's going to have a big impact on the company, what do you make of that? >> on the google to alphabet, what we are seeing with alphabet

is the fine for this antitrust suit is really not impacting the stock all that much, i think a lot of people have either priced that into the stock price or are just really confident in google's fundamentals, ultimately android is by way the most used operating system in the world specifically on mobile and so they have really a gateway for people to access their google search and for google, a large majority of their revenue still coming from search advertising and a lot of that's being fueled by mobile now, so they strong foothold ad people expect that -- that dominance to continue. gerri: so as we were showing 967 a share, 25.9 billion in top line, how does this company respond, though, to this rule, i think that's a big question, they are going to appeal it obviously but in the meantime they have to rethink business

model which essentially is this, that we give away the software free but you must take it, right, the phone makers have to use that operating system, what do they do next to accommodate the eu ruling? >> some presidents have said by microsoft in the 90's, obviously the company doing really well, i think google will follow suit, the operating system is already on most of the phones in the world and it is, again, the most used operating system, even if they were to scale back some of the google search dominance on mobile, they -- they have a lot of wiggle room, right? the search is being used a lot on desk top as well and even if they offer other search engines, you know, change a little bit of the way the operating system works, ut matily the phone itself is gateway into dozens of google products, you know, they still have, they still come pretty instaled with things like g mail, but it shouldn't hurt

bottom line. gerri: we will see if they get traction on the appeal, they are trying to put it behind themselves as quickly as possible and move on. i want to get onto microsoft for just a second here, yesterday store blow to business, cloud-computing business, really doing well, number two to amazon, could they really provide stiff competition, you know, it's a pretty competitive idea that you take our software and you buy cloud computing and package it altogether and make it easy for you, could they be a real threat to amazon? >> yes, i don't think that they'll disturb amazon's market share any time soon but they have increasing foothold, increasing amount of market share, i guess, in cloud computing space, another one to watch is google, of course, google cloud is a growing business, so there are definitely 3 gigantic competitors in the space,

amazon, microsoft and google. i think when it comes to challenging amazon's dominance, microsoft is by far the closest and really this is a story about microsoft turning itself around, for a long time this is a company that relied on windows and people subscribing to license on windows software and right now they mod -- modernizi, microsoft has done a great job. gerri: it's not your grandma, it's your microsoft, that's for sure. i still can't figure out what the biggest threat to the companies are, is it each other or regulatory overreach from the like folks like the eu? i guess we will have to wait and find out, michael nunes, great to see you. >> thanks for having me. adam: fire in yosemite continues to grow, the fire fueled by dry weather out west, tornadoes

in new york, good morning i'm gerri willis in for lauren simonetti. adam: good morning, i'm adam shapiro in for cheryl casone. gerri: you may see politicians during vacation. one democrat in particular is getting a lot of attention, new york's alexandria ocasio-cortez is joining vermont senator bernie sanders this week stumping for other left-wing candidates. this even as the 20-year-old democratic socialist star's rising profile continues to rankle some democrats. >> if the victory of ms. ocasio-cortez in bronx and queens is taken as a direction of which the democratic party should go nationally, democratic party is not going to look to president in 2020. >> joe lieberman voicing that

far-left democrats might fracture their party. caprie, i will start with you, are we going far left? >> i certainly hope not and i don't think so. i think the circumstances in the 5 burrows with the democratic socialist woman may be reflective of infrastructure that was built by bernie sanders in 2016, very mobilized democratic socialist movement here and, you know, we have seen obviously this push and pull inside of the democratic national committee as well between more establishment democrats and the left-leaning progressive wing generally represented by bernie sanders. i don't think this is the future of the democratic party. i come from ohio, and i believe that the success for the democratic party is going to be paid in identifying candidates that best reflect the values of the individual districts and, you know, anybody that tries to

say this woman is the democratic party i think is wrong. gerri: it's a good question, cliff, when you look at this, just as republican party now we are seeing the democratic party fracture as well and they want you to hear something that the candidate said about ice, listen. >> we need to occupy every airport, we need occupy every border, we need to occupy every ice office until those kids are back with their parents. we are not going win if we don't stand for anything. gerri: so, cliff, what do you say, this sounds pretty radical to me, is this the future to have democratic party and do you think a lot of people can sign on with this kind of attitude? >> yeah, i think that's the major problem, you know, the democrat party right now, what is their message? you look to national leaders, you look to folks across the country and looking at cortez everything is rooted with emotion, it's not about results, it's not about actual things you deliver for the american people, and to have a socialist as the

new spokesman of the democrat party, i mean, to me, look, the great quote goes, the problem with socialism eventually you run out of other people's money, capitalism is the way for america and i think it's a mayor problem, if democrats focus on thinking that we have to continue to grow government, they think government is tans to all of our problems. gerri: i hear what you say, capitalism is really taking it on the chin from these parties. it's amazing to me what people are saying, she has said that, you know, capitalism wasn't always a part of this country i'm like really, in what world wasn't capital not part of the country, you can really question her facts in many cases. i want to move on because joe biden is starting to look like he might run for the presidency and i want you to hear what trump had to say about biden, listen. >> i dream about biden, that's a dream. joe biden ran three times, he never got more than 1% and

president obama took him out of the garbage heap and everybody was happy that he did. gerri: love to have it be biden, capri, i think that would be a tough race for the president, what do you say? >> i certainly agree with that. i think that it would have been much better and much more difficult match-up in 2016 than hillary clinton because, you know, we hear joe biden talk about roots in pennsylvania, he understands how to talk to the middle of the country. yes, biden is old and stands for establishment and he was barack obama's vice president but he is his own man, he's someone who has past a number of bills and has, you know, really good relationships with the other side of the aisle as well. gerri: cliff, i want to get you in too, what do you make of a biden candidacy, would this give trump the fight of his life? >> well, i think what happens with joe biden is really paint

the picture, are you going after the ultra liberal progressive socialist group or are you going to try to reach, you know, everyday americans out in suburbs and more country side of america and that's a tough decision for the democrat party to make and i think that's what the split is all about, figuring out which direction they take it. gerri: that's what we will be watching, the split in democratic party, the split in republican party, it's all fractured right now, capri, cliff, thank you for coming on. >> thanks so much. adam: merck following the lead of pfizer and novartis lowering prices. gerri: not all of them, hillary vaughn joins with more on that and other headlining making news, good morning, hillary. >> good morning again, gerri, merck is marking down some of the drugs but not all of them, they are marking down heptitis c drug by 60% and some other drugs that they haven't announced will

be slashing the price as 10%, pfizer and novartis moved to release and also won't hike the net price of any medications above the rate of inflation, so we could see this as a growing trend of pharmaceutical companies. gerri: they're not cutting the price of popular cancer drug and i think that would be a big point of contention because it's super expensive. you say a top exec at paramount has been fired, why? >> well, for making inappropriate comments, par minute isn't saying what the comments were, they did kick out head of tv amy powell that made comments that were inconsistent with company values, that's what the company said, it didn't detail what she said but the wall street journal reports one person who was on a conference call where powell allegedly made comments and said that they were racial in nature and they were the ones that reported to hr and powell is saying that all of

rock and roll. gerri: good morning vietnam meeting was immortalized and real life dj, was 79 and that's what's happening now. ad athank you, gerri, earning season is off to strong start as investigators gear up for more results this morning, albert brennan, people united wealth management joins us now with closer look, good morning to you, before we get to general electric, what's driving the growth so far and are we outperforming that companies that have reported over the expectations? >> adam, earning season is early so far we've only had 80 companies report, but those are the results we've had so far have been very encouraging, the expectation was we'd see earnings up over 20% and the companies that have reported so

far have had earnings over 25%, so we've got a 5% kicker there which is, of course, encouraging, the good thing about it when you look into it, it's not just the tax cuts that are boosting earnings. adam: it's real sales. >> we have seen sales growth over 10% on those companies that have reported versus a general expectation of about 8% for the market overall, but for those companies, they beat their expectations too by a little over 1%. adam: let's talk about a company that has been struggling and that's general electric, they will be out with latest earnings before the bell, are we expecting more bad news, i know they are trying to sell off some of the assets. a lot of us can remember, we were much younger when it was about being the conglomerate, bigger, bigger, they are trying quickly to shrink, what can we expect? >> ge is neighbor of ours, and they are taking steps to try to

rationalize their company focusing on 3 different segments, aviation, health care and power and they have strong positive margins in both aviation and health care, the power segment, however, has been a bit of a drag and, you know, we are looking for revenues up perhaps almost 3 billion from first quarter, the real question that the market is asking is whether to sustain the dividend. adam: right. >> in that regard, i won't say it almost doesn't matter because -- adam: wouldn't the pressure be onto try to do that to send calm to investors? >> it certainly would be, but i think it's going to be the forward guidance that i think will matter most that comes out of the earnings report, really. adam: we will look at forward guidance and we will switch to something that has people talking, that's the president, he broke with tradition and criticized the federal reserve for raising intre rates and we

still expect two interest hike this is year, what kind of position is the president putting the fed in? i know the fed fiercely guards independence, would they no longer do that? >> i hate to laugh at my myself because i was thinking of my notes on this question, this has happened in the past, then i look back, of course, maybe my memory is longer than many people, rather, nixon came came in criticism for criticizing the fed, i don't see the president's comments about the fed actions as being threatening independence, i would be more concerned if we saw a movement initiated by the president or someone in congress for legislation that would impair but i'm not worried particularly on what president trump said. >> i don't think jarome powell is worried either. at that point we have to cut you short, albert, we appreciate you being with us at fbn:am. >> great, pleasure.

months since the nfl implemented policy for this coming season that stated teams would get fined if players kneeled or sat on the field or sidelines during national anthem and players association filed grievance to be heard by arbitrator, new national anthem on hold, joint statement released last night says in part the nfl and players association have been working on resolution to the anthem issue, in order to allow this constructive dialogue to continue, we have come to a stance still agreement on the nfl pa's grievance and anthem policy. no new rules relating to anthem will be issued or enforced for the next several weeks while these confidential discussions are ongoing. now, hours before the statement was released news broke yesterday that the miami dolphins had issued team policy that stated players who disrespect the anthem conduct code would be subject to

been a mixed bag for a lot of these -- we are having trouble with graphics this morning. let's talk about u.s. markets for just a second. this is what's been going on this morning, we have seen the dow and the s&p mixed here, the s&p now unchanged. dow down 17, nasdaq up 29 and a quarter. we are thinking the nasdaq up here in microsoft earnings that came in last night, strong report if for that company, largely on cloud business, cloud product doing very well, number two to amazon and threatening amazon in that category. we are going to be watching whether to see if the dow can come back, yesterday ended 5-day winning streak and, of course, we are keeping an eye on oil which is trading to the upside, to the downside today by a dollar, giving an eye too on what's coming out of washington. president trump criticizing the
