billionaire brothers taking on donald trump and trump firing back. katrina pearson is here on that. thank you for joining us. thank you for watching money, politics. we have the headlines. "the evening edit" starts now. it was a good day for your money. the dow is up 108 points and at 25,415. to close out the best month for stocks since january. apple just reported a solid earnings, it is on the march to be the first $1 trillion company. with me out to break it down, live from the floor of the new york stock exchange. let's get right down to nicole. what a report! >> what a report, indeed!
5:02 pm
we saw this across the board. we saw what drove the dow today. industrial stocks on the heels of report about china and the u.s. working once again to try and renegotiate tariffs and we saw boeing and caterpillar as winners. we have got to get to the apple report. the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth. in fact, 41.3 million sold. slightly off with the estimates were but we did see a beat on the top and bottom line. a better-than-expected outlook. in fact, apple says they deliver the best ever revenue for the june quarter. typically the weakest. as demand was high for the high-priced iphone and that remain resilient. services like the app store swelled to all-time highs. they saw 11.4 million ipads sold and they sold 3.4 million mac. they expect to continue this type of move in the morning. according to the options traders. we also saw for the month or the week right now, we did see the dow up 108 points. for the month of july, across the board, let's take a look
5:03 pm
here. you can see that the dow was up 4.7 percent. the nasdaq up two percent. s&p 500 of 3.6 percent. optimism for some of those beaten-down tax. elizabeth: thank you so much burlesque it to the editor at large of fortune magazine. he is the author of inside apple. great to see you, adam. welcome to the show. >> thank you so much. elizabeth: they moved seven dollars higher to be the first trillion dollar company. you think they beat amazon here? >> will it beat amazon to get in there? yes. i had to bet one dollar i would bet on apple before amazon. they will both get there though. elizabeth: what did you think of apples report? >> as i'm thinking about apple having a good report, amazon and google having had good reports we are seeing this where people want to talk about they want to say all of these tech stocks behave the say.
5:04 pm
facebook not having a good report, twitter not having a good report. turns out they are very different businesses. what you are seeing from apple is exciting only because it is so large. otherwise it is not exciting. they're just executing across the board on their plan in an almost boring fashion which is very lucrative. elizabeth: it will make a lot of 401(k)s happy. let's go to facebook breaking news. rationale accused of trying to interfere in the u.s. midterm elections. facebook says they caught fake pages and accounts on its site and also instagram. potentially linked to russia. with fake names like # abolish i.c.e. let's listen to what facebook is saying. >> early this morning we removed 32 pages and accounts for facebook and instagram. because they were involved in coordinated and authentic behavior.it's kind of behavior that is not a lot of facebook. because we don't want organizations or individuals
5:05 pm
creating networks of accounts that mislead people about who they are, or what they are doing. >> at this point in our investigation, we do not have technical evidence to state definitively who is behind this. but we can say that these accounts engaged in some similar activities and have connected with known ira accounts.elizabeth: those non-ira accounts meeting russia linked accounts. in your reporting, you're a great reporter. have you seen any evidence that russia can change how someone votes, via social media? >> well, i've not reported on that directly. it is sort of an existential question. in my opinion, of course they can get someone to change their vote. the way many of us can or many influence get people to change votes. the question becomes is it an honest or dishonest effort? there are efforts obviously that are dishonest. elizabeth: has facebook lost control? at least one of these fake pages had nearly 300,000 followers.
5:06 pm
>> you know, i was thinking to give them the benefit of the doubt. they are doing something today that they said about one year or year and and a half ago. that they said they couldn't do. there is so much on facebook, how could we possibly have known? turns out, they can no. they cannot be perfect. they are trying to find a needle in a haystack. but they found these needles. it is very difficult to control but they have the ability to do something. that's what you are seeing today. elizabeth: you wonder, we talked earlier about tech companies because there is fear out there that consumers and investors may be bailing from social media sites. the smp sector lost an estimated $240 billion is facebook disappointed last week. are you thinking that maybe we hit peak social media here? >> well, we very well may have hit the peak social media. which is very bad for facebook core product if you will. the interesting thing about facebook is that it is more than facebook. it is instagram and hype
5:07 pm
virtual-reality stuff that they are doing and by the way, facebook is a good product. people still love to know what their high school girlfriend is doing right now. and so, i should have joke about it but it's very valuable in that way. it's not this kind of thing is he going to zero. think you frame the question exactly right. it certainly could be peak activity. elizabeth: we will see. adam, we want you back on. come back soon. >> thank you. elizabeth: remember president trump talking tough on china. watch. >> just remember we are the bank. where the bank everyone wants to steal from. and plunder. and it can't be that way anymore. we lost $500 billion last year with china. we are going to end the theft of american intellectual property. crackdown on china's trade abuses and confront countries that cheat. i also had a very candid
5:08 pm
conversation with president xi jinping about the need to reduce our staggering trade deficit with china.and for our trading relationship to be conducted on a truly fair and equitable basis. we can no longer tolerate unfair trading practices that steal american jobs, wealth and intellectual property. elizabeth: is now a new report, china may be linking. china isn't ready to deal. china's economy is starting to get hit by the tariff fight and more. this is the dow did rise more than 100 points today. upon reports of the u.s. and china are seeking to restart talks to diffuse trade tensions. let's bring a money pro, and advisory group principal, michael lee. the s tariffs set to kick in tomorrow. does it look to that china will buckle and start negotiating a fair deal? what do you see happening?
5:09 pm
we are seeing economic weakness with numbers coming out of china not good. >> they are down from their high. the government trying to devalue the currency to prop up experts. american companies and other international companies and i guess some chinese companies as well, already slowing down production in anticipation of u.s. tariffs. this is hurting them far more than it will hurt us. i do not think tariffs are necessarily a good idea. but they seem to do the trick and they seem to be having an effect and i think china will come back to the negotiating table. elizabeth: let's dig in. china's economy is backed on exports. it is companies like -- they need u.s. companies. manufacturing weakening. we are hearing chinese manufacturers are thinking of leaving china to go to places like malaysia or vietnam to get away from this fight with the us. what is your take on that? >> it is a huge factored the
5:10 pm
problem with these trade policies, they can help in certain industries if you want to prop up. however, the long-term effects just slow growth. china needs to open up their markets to foreign investment. if they want to reach their full potential pair the problem is there communist fear, still want to give up control. what do they want? prosperity or control. >> let's look at iran. look at this. this countries currency, iran's currency has dropped a big 18 percent in just two days time for that the loss also since the beginning of the year. it seems nearly 2/3 of the value has been lost. this is even before u.s. sanctions fully kicked in. what you think of the story of what's going on with iran?>> so -- i think what the trump administration and u.s. government is position for is for popular uprising. the persians is one of the richest cultures and history of the world.
5:11 pm
it seems as if they want to erase that and take it back to the stone age. they are the largest state sponsor of terror and i think this administrations policy is to see if they can crush the regime. i expect further pain in their currency. >> let's get to the good news for a mutual fund account and government pensions. and across the country. the trump team looking to another tax boost. another tax break for workers and all sorts of investors out there. potentially worth $100 billion, that is the value of it. includes taxes on capital gains. this involves property or stock. what do you think about indexing capital gains to reduce the eventual tax bill? >> i think this is an absolutely brilliant idea. so often, with being missed and was not being talked about with this is people's primary residence. there are certain portion of
5:12 pm
the gain is tax-free depending how long you've lived in the home. many people have bought their house 20 or 30 years ago i've seen substantial gains because of inflation. something like this could potentially save millions of people tons of money in taxes. also, when you cut taxes on capital gains, is a dramatic increase in revenue. dramatic increase in investment. it's really what took us to the next level in the late 90s. i think it's a brilliant idea. elizabeth: michael lee, come back soon, great stuff. >> thank you. elizabeth: look at this new report. millennials don't want construction jobs. coming up, we have a former construction worker. he is now the ceo of his own construction company. he says millennials don't understand the opportunity that they are passing up. but first, how radical is bernie sanders medicare for all program?
5:13 pm
the democrats campaigning on it. they stated to the left of democrat countries like china. we stack it up to other socialist countries and you will not believe what we found out in terms of how extreme it is. but first, video going viral of a harvard law professor, really going after an msnbc panel. >> shame on you. i am making a civil liberties case. i'm not part of the trump defense team and don't you dare accuse me of doing that. elizabeth: the harvard law professor is here to talk about it after the break. stay there. impeachable offense. it would be an article of impeachment, no question about it. >> this is very damning for trump. spill criminal liability for the present on the horizon with these claims. the media going wall-to-wall over the michael cohen case. and the collision story. also video going viral. of harvard law professor, alan dershowitz, rushing back. he schooled-- scolded an msnbc . -- it should be pointed out that alan dershowitz voted for hillary clinton. watch. >> you are implying in a mccarthy way that i am somehow defending donald trump and i am making his case. shame on you. i am making a civil liberties case. i'm not part of the trump defense team.don't you dare accuse me of doing that. i am not making a case for anybody. i would be making the identical case if hillary clinton had been elected and they were

trying to stretch the law the way all four of you are trying to stretch the law to target somebody who you disapprove of. elizabeth: with me now we have the harvard law professor, alan dershowitz. good to see you. you are accused of defending trump. what happened? >> they assumed i was his lawyer and responsible for everything he said.i am saying the exact same thing i would say if hillary clinton had been elected president and they were trying to impeach or investigate her. the commentator earlier was saying it's a crime to collude, it will be a crime if this happened or that happened. if hillary clinton were sitting in the same seat, and they were going after her, these very same liberals would be making exactly the opposite argument. they will be saying, civil liberties consideration, precludes us from getting a case from emails and tweets and
5:19 pm
all of that. you cannot have obstruction of justice by a president acting and collusion isn't a crime. but because she was on the other foot, because today in the investigation is directed against the president who they don't like and who i did not vote for, they're prepared to stretch the law beyond all recognition. it is really hypocrisy at its worst. my job is to expose the hypocrisy and stand up to civil liberties just as i would be doing if it were the republicans yelling lock her up and impeach her against hillary clinton. but people do not want to understand that. they don't want to believe i have made a principal argument they think i've been bought and paid for by trump. they said i been subject to blackmail by trump.they say want to be on the supreme court and that's why i'm doing it. they say because i support his policies on israel.i am doing it because i'm a civil libertarian. i will do for anyone democrat or republican. elizabeth: one panelist said because you're making this civil liberties defense, she made that you are defending
5:20 pm
donald trump. you see how the media does that? they distort? >> of course. it happened to me when i was a kid in the college and i defended the right of communists to speak. when i defended the right of nazis to march i was a nazi sympathizer. that is mccarthy ism. the essence of it is you blame the lawyer or the defender for the sins of the person or institution they are defending. and you have to keep a separation. there has to be permission for civil libertarians to defend principles even if we disagree with the policies. the aclu usually did that but it is failing to do that now because it is making all of its money going after donald trump. elizabeth: the aclu is certainly a wall in the civil liberties. you are right. let's get to the nest case. the former campaign trail, paul manafort, trial kicking off today. anyone looking for evidence of collusion will be disappointed. paul manafort faces up to 305 years in prison for bank fraud

and income tax evasion for not paying taxes on the tens of millions of dollars he got advising a ukrainian party starting in 2005. he is accused of more also. nothing to do with his time working for the trump campaign per the court filing from the robert mueller team says quote - the government does not intend to present a trial evidence or argument concerning collision with the russian government.your take on this trial as it relates to president trump.>> well, my tank is saying as the judge said categorically that they are not after paul manafort. they're not going after because they want to put him in jail. they're going after him to squeeze him.they want to make and sing. as the judge put it, sometimes witnesses squeezed not only sing, they compose, they make it up and exaggerate. they tell a better story because they know they will get a better deal. this is not about paul manafort is about trying to get to the oval office and paul manafort is being used as a means towards that end. elizabeth: the mueller team,
5:22 pm
there is no collusion charge technically in the law. but there is conspiracy. the team is looking for conspiracy charges against campaign workers in order to break the law, conspiracy with russia to break the law. that is the legal steps there. is there conspiracy charge anywhere, anywhere in the law that says you know, to have list the u.s. campaign, you broken the law. is there anything that says that in the law? >> we civil libertarians have often complained about conspiracy being the plaything of prosecutors. they can stretch it beyond all recognition. but i cannot imagine a case that could be brought based on a theory that collusion is conspiracy. in my book, the case against impeaching trump i give a hypothetical prayer the worst hypothetical it did not happen or come close. candidate trump because of vladimir putin us as a have a deal for you. if you help me become president, i am against the sanctions so it will probably be easier to get rid of those
5:23 pm
sanctions.and i know you have some dirt on hillary clinton. please get that to me. that would not be a crime. it would not be conspiracy, it would not be collusion. it would be a political sin but as a person he taught criminal at harvard you have to show me the statute. show me where the statute says that that kind of thing is collusion or conspiracy. it is not fair. it's not a crime it is a sin. elizabeth: alan dershowitz your terrific. author of the book the case against impeaching trump. thank you for coming on the show.we love having you on, come back soon.>> thank you, my pleasure. elizabeth: apple is on the march to be the first $1 trillion market value company. shares moving higher now 197. remember it only has to hit 203 and change. we have that for you. again, the stock only has to move about four percent higher to be the first $1 trillion company in the world! now look at this coming up. late-night comedian jimmy kimmel tried to get kim

you've set it there very well. everyone needs to understand this is doubly employed by these democrat socialist leaders trying to draw people into their body by waving these shiny objects in the air.give everyone free healthcare, free tuition. it also is great, of course. but they never offer legitimate ideas on how in the world it would be paid for. and it is so radical that it makes china look like a better model. in the u.s. right now, just 11 percent of healthcare costs are paid out-of-pocket by u.s. citizens. we have a much better system by any measure. i a calculation then anything they are proposing. and the price tag on what they're proposing is absolutely astronomical. elizabeth: by the way it would get rid of corporate insurance, medicaid and medicare. double the nations debt up to 10 years. one estimate has it costing $32.6 trillion. what is going on with democrats, presidential hopefuls like harris and elizabeth warren? they backed the plan, so does john conyers.
