have judge jeanine pirro, paul bracken and harmeet good night from new york. kennedy: president trump playing hardball with iran. exactly four hours the white house restarting its crippling sanctions against the rogue nation. the president has a warning for any other nation that might want to stand in his way. you will quote risk severe consequences. the administration pulled out of the iran nuclear deal three months ago. president trump has been railing against the obama-era policies since he was a candidate, calling it a horrible one-sided deal. the sanctions are meant to ruin their economy and isolate them from the rest of the world.
12:01 am
they won't be able to import metals or export their own products which cuts off their ability to raise cash. national security advisor john bolton explained why the administration is doing this. >> our policy is not regime change. but we want to put unprecedented pressure on the government of iran to change its behavior. so far they have shown no indication they are prepared to do that. the president made it clear he viewed the iran deal as one of the worst deals in diplomatic history. we are not going to allow iran to get nuclear weapons. kennedy: joining me now, national review's own year editor jonah goldberg. a lot of people when they look back at the obama administration, they say this deal was the best we could hope for. do you believe that?
12:02 am
>> no. i thought it was a terrible deal. it was a deal to guarantee iran doesn't have a nuclear weapon within 10 years and guarantee it will have one after 10 years which didn't seem like a great deal to me. by giving them all of this money, the pallets of cash. they would repair their economy and instead they use it to fund hamas, hes bow a, go to -- hezbollah and it backfired on its own terms and it wasn't going to guarantee they wouldn't get a nuclear weapon which i thought was the point. kennedy: some people say it doesn't matter what you do with sanctions, they don't work. here you have some of the sanctions being lifted and cash
12:03 am
being sent over in exchange for hostages. as you are proving right now. there is more civil unrest than has been since the green revolution. i don't know how placing the sanctions back on that hot pot creates the ideal conditions for an effective uprising where people from within demand and receive the kind of necessary change so iran can participate fairly in a global economy. >> this is all high stakes stuff. i think the actual iran deal was a bad deal on the merits. you can make the argument that, you know, like they say in medicine. the cure for being stabbed in the chest isn't necessarily pull the knife back out. that can make things worse. i think it's a legitimate argument to say maybe we should
12:04 am
have let this thing run its course. but that's not where i come down. i think we should be leaning into this. the idea of fomenting the unrest in that country is in our interests, fomenting the overthrow that government is in our interest. i don't want to send troops in to do it. kennedy: how do we do it? it's better for us, it's better for them, it's better for the world, it's better for peace if their government is overthrown. we don't want regime change and another theater opening in the middle east. how do you do it other than wishing and hoping? >> i want regime change. i just don't want regime change at the point of one of our guns. but i would love it if there was a revolution from within that overthrew the mullahs and the
12:05 am
revolutionary guard. i would love it if they had a democratic popular uprising to get back to being a regular country. you delegitimize the regime by not cooperating with them to continue on the path of exporting terror over their neighborhood. if they lived up to the deal becoming a normal country, you wouldn't see runaway inflation and all of these protests. kennedy: what have we learned not to do with north korea and iran? what are some of the lessons. here is what not to do. applying those lessons to north korea. meaning is it imperative that we do not ease up and allow sanctions to be lifted and again an economic lifeline into north korea? is that what we learned here?
12:06 am
>> iran and north korea are very different countries. but i'm all in favor of tightening the sanctions on the regimes of both countries. the problem is north korea is a very narrow criminal re people in at the very top. it's not a communist country. it's a divine right of kills country. iran has a bigger robust civil society. there is a lot of people power on the ground. >> you also have a lot of family members that live in the west. generationally you will reach critical mass. there will be more young people who want to engage in a free market economy, hopefully we don't have to wait too long for that to happen. >> if they didn't have a nuclear program i would be happy waiting
12:07 am
it out. but they do and i don't want the ayatollahs to have nuclear weapons. kennedy: the media whipped up into a foamy frenzy after the president's latest tweet on the russia investigation. he tweeted fake news reporting. the meeting my son had in trump tower. this was a meeting to get information on an opponent. totally legal and done all the time in politics. it went nowhere and i did not know about it. cnn is quoting anonymous sources who claim the president is concerned his son could be in legal jeopardy. but the president's legal team and supporters claim the tweets prove nothing. but with you thing that's clear is there is a lot of hay that's
12:08 am
been made about this meeting. but will anything come of it? along with democratic strategist, and reason.com associate editor robby soave. good to see you all. when does opposition research go too far? >> well, first of all, to answer that question, it is a very common practice. so there is nothing unusual about meeting with individuals who claim that they have dirt or learnable information on your opponent. it's been going on forever. kennedy: have presidential campaigns been reaching into the caverns of people who live in other countries to get that information? >> sure. yeah. let me give an example of that. russian intel players were feeding information to
12:09 am
christopher steele who knew he was getting information or should have known from russian intel sources, and they were feeding this stuff to him and he was feeding that to fusion, and they were feeding it to the clinton campaign and they were happy as pigs. they didn't care. that's kind of what you do. i don't think they imagined this would blow up into a collusion issue. this meeting in trump tower. i don't know what donald, jr. knew about this meeting. my understanding is they went into it believing there was going to be some dirt possibly, leveragable information, and it morphed into this discussion about adoption. kennedy: why does russia have so much dirt in is it because they are spying on so many americans? there are so many powerful
12:10 am
countries. why does russia have so much opposition research. >> they don't. they don't have any more than the chinese or the north koreans or the french. kennedy: we are hyper focused on russia. there seems to be a russian funnel. >> the concern is not about the opposition research. the concern is donald trump was told this meeting was part of a larger effort by the russian evident to help donald trump win the election. this was in the emails he was forced to release. this is part of a concerted effort. what is concerning about this to me and others, is the trump campaign was told the russians had stolen emails from hillary clinton. instead of going to the police, they had a meeting with a kremlin operative in trump tower.
12:11 am
at the same time we have a trump associate talking to the gru. talking about the russian intelligence agency that stole the emails from the dnc. kennedy: at the same time i want to point something out. you also have harry reid talking with john brennan who is the head of the cia, and they seem to be barking up the exact same tree. it's a russian tree. >> you can't swing that cat without hitting a kremlin expert on spying. we created a nation of experts on russian spying. i think that. >> i am just reading his emails. harry reid is a member of the gang of eight and he's talking about an active attack from a hostile foreign power.
12:12 am
what christopher steele was trying to do. he was a private investigator hired by the campaign to try to find out -- kennedy: he was also working for the fbi. he was hired because the campaign was very concerned that the kremlin was working to elect donald trump and they were trying to figure that out. kennedy: i have got to bring robby in here. >> i have not seen the evidence to prove the collusion narrative and i'm not buying into it. them giving conflicting accounts of why this meeting took place. i understand why that would inspire concern in people who are looking to connect the dots where i don't see it. kennedy: lying about the timeline is problematic. >> it's not the crime, it's the cover-up. kennedy: it's not the same thing
12:13 am
as the massive conspiracy the left is trying to paint. >> if this meeting was completely innocent, why do you -- let's remember, the lines in the trump campaign, they didn't speak to russians at all ever. >> i think it's amazing. but i do agree with you. from an operational perspective. i don't know what's going on in these people's minds. i understand operations and intelligence. i worked the russian target for a fairly long time. i am not seeing the collusion thing. but keep going, dig down that rabbit hole. see what you can find. i think we'll end up with something that's not going to satisfy anybody.
12:14 am
kennedy: i have got to table this discussion for a minute. we'll see the man panel back in a few minutes. paul manafort's trial rolls on. a we got crazy new twists. remember he was in trump tower in that don, jr. meeting. today his former right-hand man testified and confessed to mutual crimes. edward lawrence is in washington with more. reporter: a clean-shaving gates testified. the prosecution put gates on the stand. he testified he was involved in criminal activity in regard to money at the direction of manafort. the prosecutor asked this. were you involved in criminal activity when you worked for manafort? gates said yes. the follow-up question, did you
12:15 am
create a crime? answer, yes. he said he lied to manafort's bookkeeper and arranged for wire transfers that were not reported to the irs. he said he made $65 million for a russian lobbying group in the ukraine. gates admitted to embezzling money from manafort to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. he served as manafort's business partner for more than a decade. gates pled guilty last february to conspiracy and lying to federal agents. manafort's defense says gates is the mastermind behind this. the defense said gates got caught stealing from manafort and will say anything to day out of jail. gates will be sentenced after
