hunt once and for all. join us tomorrow. we'll be talking with interior secretary ryan zinke and candace owens. good night from new york. kennedy: hey, john brennan. you called the president's claim there was no russian collusion hogwash. and you said you know america worked with russian spies during the 2016 campaign. if it's actually true, how do you know? and why didn't you ever tell anyone? as you know, the president yesterday revoked john brennan's security clearance after the former intel chief's reported attacks on the commander-in-chief. the president called him a partisan hack. brennan said in a "new york times" op-ed, trump is desperate to protect himself which is why

he made the politically motivated decision to scare into silence rotters who may -- on the g silence others who dare to challenge him. richard burr questioned brennan's story, asking, his statements purport to know as fact that the trump campaign excluded with a foreign power. if his statements are based on intelligence he received while leading the ci tax, why didn't he include it in the assessment released in 2017. if his statement is based on intelligence he has seen since leaving office, it constitutes an intelligence breach. and it should be disclosed to special counsel, not the "new york times." is been in the one full of
12:02 am
hogwash? joining me to battle itous. kayleigh mcenany and juan williams. juan, i will start with you. let's discuss this a little bit. what does john brennan know about collusion and what is he saying? >> what he said in front of one of the house intelligence committees, trey gowdy specifically in the house oversight. while he was the head of intelligence he got reports that indicated there were contacts between russian officials with jeff sessions now the attorney general, we know about george papadopoulos and this is all in the press now, there is nothing classified. george papadopoulos saying there were efforts to get negative information on hillary clinton from the russians. there are questions about the wikileaks. what he said in front of congress was this was the basis for further investigation. but the idea there was collusion
12:03 am
and there were ties and communications between the russians and people in the trump camp he said was self-evident. kennedy: if it's self-evident i guess he should have made it evident to other people, including the person running for path who has a 50-50 shot of the winning. he should sh said there are moles in the your organization working with the russians to undermine our democracy. because now brennan is screaming from the mountaintops. do you see revoking his security clearance as somehow politically motivated and vick deck tough? >> not in the slightest. john brennan is a questionable actor to say the least. that's putting it in a light and optimistic fashion. he has on multiple occasions deceived congress and the american public about drone
12:04 am
strikes. 2014 he misled dianne feinstein and senators when he told them they had not breached their computers. with the dossier he said it had not been used in an intelligence assessment only to be contradicted by james clapper. he has a history of lying. good for president trump for doing this. kennedy: i understand brennan is upset by this. but why snow's not c.i.a. director anymore. i don't have an ax to grind with john brennan. why is he entitled to continued clearance? >> nobody is entitled to it. but you have got to consider there are 4 million people with some level of security clearance. kennedy: maybe he should revoke
12:05 am
half of those as well. >> there are 1 million with top secret clearance. what this comes across to me is not what kayleigh is saying. but they are off in the weeds from this, which is you are revoking this guys clearance at this time either to get away from discussions from omarosa and her attacks on the president or two to punish your political opponents. it looks like something a dictator or autocrat would do. john brennan like any american has a right to be critical. kennedy: i don't have a problem with john brennan saying what he said. i may disagree with the what i said some of those things. i think it wrote be problematic if the prtd talked about throwing number jail or having him arrested. which is essentially what
12:06 am
abraham lincoln did. >> that's habeas corpus, and that's a different thing in a time of war. he's sending a message to people, shut up. just like the non-disclosures. nobody is supposed to criticize the president. >> that's not the motive. cia rules say in order to maintain your security clearance you must act like a current cia employee. the president is enforcing cia rules. this whole collusion talk, i know there is collusion which is what brennan is saying. kennedy: i think richard burg brings up a good point. when you could have warned people that there were bad actors trying to undermine the

election. or you have gotten it when you shouldn't have gone the it and you shouldn't be talking about it in the way you should. >> my gut tells me this is a massive destruction effort. you pointed out at the top of the show, john brennan is somebody perfectly willing to share state secrets. so if there was any evidence of collusion i can guarantee you it would have been like -- leaked to the press. it's to distract, using the dossier. he's detracting from his misdeeds. >> kayleigh, remember, there was no leak about the fact of an investigation into potential russian collusion with the trump campaign at the time of the campaign and that served donald trump and donald trump's presidential campaign's interests. it would have been damaging to him at that juncture.
12:08 am

it. very smart people. the wash between president trump and the press. it's not heading for a ceasefire anytime soon. over 300 newspapers across the country published an editorial arguing the press is not the enemy of the people. the president said there is knowing would want more for our country than true freedom of the press. the fact is the press is free to write and say anything it wants. but much of what it says is fake news, pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people. honesty wins. many believe it could backfire on the press. he warns all the group think is not a good look for the press. tim carney, welcome back. this ways you do for a living. where do you start with the

president's attacks on the press or their reaction to it which might backfire? >> i think it's sort of a dumb slur to say fake news enemy of the people, and these things coming from the president is worse. if you are saying about newspapers it can be dumb. it's the president who has the power, the i.r.s. at its finger tips. we don't like the government sticking their fingers where they don't belong and i don't like politicians sticking their opinions in things that aren't their business. but i don't like 300 newspapers coming together and singing the same hymn *. it ignores the fact that a lot of the major media acts in a way that they hate 40% of the

country. they act with disdain toward a major portion of the country. kennedy: that's why what the president says resonates with those people. the "l.a. times" decided not to publish one of those editorials. they said they don't lean on anyone else for editorial direction and they don't expect other newspapers to follow the same from them. >> i thought that was great. what we are supposed to be doing as opinion pages is being independent voices. where no party tells us what to do, no president tells us what to do. the banding together and a lot of what you are seeing today is not just a loss of independence from other papers. but so many of these people are forming their opinion. there are some who form their opinion just to agree with trump. there are a lot more to look at where trump is and they take the

opposite opinion. in addition to criticizing trump's word we criticized journalists behaving badly and attacking people. they said just focus on trump. we'll be independent. we'll not let trump tell us what to believe. either by agreeing him or disagreeing. kennedy: is there anything positive that happens here with the way people look for and process information? when you hear such disparate tales of what the press is meant to do, it's very confusing. is there something beneficial about that turning news consumers into skeptics. >> in the press we need to have a big debate about what we are doing and who and how. the mask of connectivity. when "the washington post" puts out reporters who pretend to not have an opinion, they can still

12:15 am
let me ask chris stirewalt. what in the wide wide world of sports is going on here? >> this doesn't add up to anything. omarosa is having a successful book launch. she has had it several days in a row she has been able to get something. this isn't much. we had a big shocking story when she made an allegation the president used the most of reviled racial slur. that story was compounded when the white house press secretary said she couldn't be sure the president hadn't said something like that on tape. that's a big story. this is nothing. the degree to omarosa and shaping the news settling scores and selling books, this falls in the latter cam. kennedy: what is the biggest
12:16 am
bombshell so far? >> that was not the word i was going to use. i would say the biggest bombshell is this is why when the trump administration -- this is why you have a real transition. this is why you take time and are careful about doing these things and why these positions matter and why the white house which once upon a time had steve bannon and mike flynn and scaramucci and corey lewandowski who populated the administration hat washed out. there is a learning curve for every president. for this president it was steep. you can't have somebody like omarosa work for you in the white house. somebody who is a reality show villain is not going to exhibit the devotion to the president and the people necessary for the job. kennedy: she knew all along she would get fired.
12:17 am
it ended badly in the clinton white house. and she newt on the way she was going to make any money was to write a juicy book. she took a syringe and juiced up the whole thing by recording as many conversations as she should knowing this would culminate and eclipse the news cycle for days. so as far as the marketing strategy, i would say good job, you. >> selling a lot of books, no doubt. but her big allegation about donald trump using the n word as an adult man in recent years. if that tape is out there, it will be a terrible consequence for the nation and the republican party. and it will be bad news all along. these people don't trust each other and are not trustworthy. usual recording eechg other, a
