question is whether or not that's going to help or not. but demise of coal has been going on for some time when it comes to electric power generation take a look at the last dozen years, natural gas increasingly becoming a more viable alternative to coal up 36% in terms of use in electric power plants and coal down about 36% over the same time. overall consumption of coal in this country -- well wees used to be a dozen years ago over a billion short tons. now we're closer to 700 million tons. the president whatever he's going to say about this he'll say is later today as he goes to west virginia and meets with patrick morrissey he's republican senate candidate all we got to know a bit during his hard fought primary against a former coal, the president will say, presumably that he's going to role back obama era regulations on emissions. but you know it might not be so much about emissions that is

hurting coal as it is the availability of cleaner burning and cheap or natural gas thanks to track aring. you know coal mining is a very difficult job. you know, coal miners want the jobs but not because it is dirty and because they have to go underground and perhaps not see the sun for dayings on ends maybe expose themselves to that but they want jobbings because they're good paying jobs they help them feed their families only problem is now maybe they pay too much because natural gas emerged as a much cleaner and cheaper alternative. tough to fight market forces. lauren and cheryl. >> well, thank you jeff and for more let's bring in democratic strategist howard franklin and eric of horizon guys, good morning. >> good morning. >> you know eric i have to ask you do you think this is a risky strategy for the president jeff flock just explained it. we have 200 plants closedded. you now have -- coal fire plangts and that's only 40% of energy production in

it seems that a lot of states are not against cleaning up air, cleaning up pollution but they want to be oneses in charge of that at least attorney general feel like they have a better handle hao wards on their state can handle mission and reduction in green house gases. >> sure. i mean, i think the federal government acted in this case the governments were not going to act and, obviously, having king the city across the board in terms of policy for -- clean air, emissions green house gases et cetera puts everything on a level playing field so i think there's plenty of reason for the federal government and the obama administration to act, and i would challenge the idea that regulation is the reason that coal is fallen behind. i think america has lost something like 100,000 coal mining jobs in a lot of decades and little to do with regulation much more to do with technology, and clean air faster cheaper, renewable energy within, you know, a critical mass. fnght glad you brought that up because we have a graphic to

show viewers this has been happening for years and years because again that gas is cheaper solar, and wind which is a lot of money hasn't been invested in those things if you look at the con sulings from 2005 to 2017 huge differential and also to be fair eric, i mean look, you know, the jobs aren't really there anymore. i realize president is going to west virginia thals coal country but now about 53,000 workers that was at 90,000 workers in the industry a while ago so that base -- to use that qortd is actually shrunk. >> i mean it is tefl truce. and that long-term, i'm sure coal will next decade see even greater shrinkage. however, the fact for the moment as we transition to sources of energy there's no need dwrown push workers who have very little option in training at mommy to suddenly find themselves out of work and et cetera, and so i think by adopting a slower -- more gradual approach that's going to, you know, be easier
