force the fed to raise interest rates. let's bring in john. good morning. >> good morning. cheryl: we saw interesting market action on friday after the jobs report. the worry now is inflation and that inflation could get out of control with super prices picking up. good for the american worker. >> i take some solace today that the futures in the s&p 500 are up in the us treasuries still below 3%, so that shows me the volatility we saw in february has priced some of this in, but 2.9% let's see if this is a trend going higher before we panic. cheryl: we are looking at the graphic right now and it's the 95th consecutive month of job growth. the economy has been on fire and at the same time if you look at july

inflation, usually the rate increases could prevent the economy from overheating and that is good because it controls inflation. >> i think the wage growth is a bit of a mystery to economists because the job market has been so tight for so long for the passport man-- years within 5% unemployment so where's this job growth and we finally-- the question is can the trend continue and that's what the fed is watching. cheryl: we did see pressure on government bonds on the tenure in particular. i mean, that kind of was the first-- glad to hear you're not necessarily worried about it. what you make of the fed there seems to be more disagreement about the december interest hike? >> i agree with you the fed raises rates in the upcoming meeting. the question is how hawkish will their language be before the

even of the midterm election. and then they will wait till december to see if they make the final move before year end so i would expect great increase in september, slightly muted tone and then they will let the data playoff for december. cheryl: until next week we don't have any big reports that will give us inflation news. is there anything you will be looking for this week? we are watching for the tariff fights with china and the european union. what's your main focus quick thank you that the nail on the head. couple months now into certain. wheel prices have been higher. companies were struggling with commodity prices, so let's see if they have been able to pass this through and let's see what happens in terms of the data. there are a lot of moving parts to keep an eye on. cheryl: i was looking mortgage rates 4.5%, a big jump from last

lauren: chief investment officer showings as now to unpack and discuss this. good morning, joe. >> good morning. lauren: do you think the president really thinks it's that easy to move an entire supply chain to the us? apple has already committed $350 billion in the us over five years. >> appellee's spending money in the us to bring jobs and you know their services here, but no, they won't pack up and leave china. i think this is the president trying to reach out to influential companies like n-uppercase-letter-- apple and get them involved in the trade discussion so they can gain leverage with the chinese government. lauren: couple rode a candid statement to the us trade representative saying you are hurting consumers because these proposed tariffs will affect the iphone yet, that would be tremendous because it's such a moneymaker for the company, but a host of other apple products, the home pot, mac mini, earbuds.

apple is warning you will hit american consumers with these tariffs. do you think the administration is listening? >> i think the administration is cognitive of the fact that tariffs are inflationary and raise prices, but they also want to make sure there is jobs in the us. it's a populous administration as we head into the midterm elections and the president was to rally the gop base around that fairness or america in global trade. lauren: you also have the forward side of the story with a low volume car called the folks it-- focus active with the president tweeting: let's build it in the united states. forward basically said no it doesn't make sense and it's not profitable. is forward forfeiting sales for the right reasons here? >> once again these are long-term capital expenditure decisions to

put production on in the fact that trade and tariff could go either way based on meetings and negotiations. i think ford said this is where we men in a gamut decision this car -- car. if they forfeit sales in the short run, they think they are making a better economic decision in the long run. lauren: how does this play out? it's a lot of shatter-- chatter. had investors play this? >> go with what you know again, think that trade and tariff is transitory stick to good valued companies that make high-quality products. lauren: the president tweeted over the weekend and specifically on card tariffs and said:

executives resigned. the ceo elon musk appeared to smoke pot in a video and those departures, let's bring in nathan business reporter. nathan, joe morton i think is the one that has analysts concerned, i mean,-- excuse me, dave morton. he came in and was on the job a month and one analyst said if you see the cfo walk to the accounting chief walk away what are they saying that they may be uncomfortable putting their name on? what you think of that departure and what you think you walked out? >> when morton resigned he said it had nothing to do with tesla's financial reporting, so if you take that at face value it's not a big deal. when you have the chief accounting officer eddie coming for less than a month involving a controversial decision that elon musk consider taking tesla private you have to wonder if leadership stability at tesla will continue to be an ongoing problem. cheryl: seems to be a problem for investors in the stock and since august 6, tweet where he

said we have funding secured to go private. stock has lost a third of its value. he's playing with other people's money right now. >> volatility-- volatility is normal for tesla. it's got up and down and up and down over the years. i think the concern is that elon musk has reached a stage where people are sure he can lead the company to where it needs to be. there is calls now bracey 00 at tesla need someone to run things from day-to-day and it must need to put trust in that person, but at this point no indication tesla's going in that direction. cheryl: the fcc's investigating him because of the tweet he put out in the middle of the trading session which is rare and may have been considered misguided, but whether they do because you don't have tesla without elon musk. at the same time his management skills are being questioned and i

think that's a fair point to ask if he's the right person to manage the company. >> i think you are right. elon musk is tesla to investors and people that have bought into the company believe in his leadership, so i don't think he is in of going away or getting ousted. the boat is under pressure to push elon musk to get the company to be a major electric vehicle manufacturer. right now it's just a niche automaker and if they want to reach the big leagues then they will have to find a way to improve electric vehicle production so that the keep your head down and improve manufacturing. right now it's still pretty niche. cheryl: before we go, q3, q4 he is saying they will be profitable and that depends on the model three production line. he says 5000 a month and other analysts say 4000 month. that may not meet profitability. >> this could be even a one-time profit even if they reach the benchmark

because going forward they have significant expenses including making a new factory in china, so even if they turn a one-time profit ultimately needs to find an audience among middle america. right now it's still luxury vehicles. cheryl: your coverage has been great in "usa today". thanks for being here. lauren: ford, exceeding a new electric vehicle that's inspired by the iconic mustang. cheryl: i can see hillary driving a mustang. >> i did have a mustang wants. doesn't sound like a mustang because it's an electric car as ford adds to its fleet of electric cars, something that looks a bit like a mustang. this is the first sneak peek. these new meals are part of the car companies $11 billion investment into electric vehicle technology. cheryl: what is this new lawsuit about bosses snooping on

employees? >> this is a bit of a great area with a new lawsuit in new york determining how much employers can snoop through their employee devices. if you do work from your personal device does a employee have a right to that. a financial firm is suing his former boss for accessing his computer during what he said was a dispute or pay when he decided to leave, but the company says its access of employee devices in the suit could set the stage as more and more of us use our personal devices cheryl: i have two devices. lauren: i had three at one point as we approach follow a lot of people think of pumpkin spice, but we usually eat or drink it, but now, we can do something else with pumpkin. >> for the super super pumpkin spice than there is now a deodorant.

trump one in 2016. what you say to this? >> well, i think the president is showing how small he is as a former president. you did not see bush come out against obama during the midterm elections took you didn't see clinton come out against bush during the midterm elections. this is typical of obama who is one of the most divisive presidents our nation has ever had and now he's pointing the finger at trump calling trump the divisive and i think it's typical of the democrats, typical of the left to try to point fingers at the fault that they have at their opponents. lauren: and the left is trying to take responsibility for the economic recovery. listen. >> when you hear how great the economy is doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started suddenly republicans are saying it's a miracle.

i have to remind them actually those job numbers are the same as they were in 2015 and 2016. lauren: here's my question. was this economic turnaround a product of the obama administration how come the democrats didn't own it in 2016 and how does this play forward? >> democrats did. stock market was 8000 when president obama was elected and when he left it was almost 20000, so significant gain. president trump has built on it and he should get the credit for building on it took he's going to create the biggest deficit americans have ever seen and when he put that a money in the economy you see a boost, but at the end of a president trump is our nation's cyber bully, the one that gets on his twitter account, attacks everyone under the sun and so now he's

getting a little bit of that heat back and he's falling asleep. he's been asleep at the job. he needs to get leadership to the country and bring us together and not sit on his twitter account dividing americans and creating trade wars that could put this economy into a death spiral. lauren: you are talking about the likability of the president. we will talk about that into the midterm elections for control of congress. a lot of people who might not like personally president trump they like what he's doing. they like how the economy-- other local economy is. do you think it could be a winning strategy for republicans, ted? >> of course it is. you to remember what obama was sane and his supporters were saying is that the new normal for economic growth was 2% and now, we see a 4.2% gdp. at the last 19 months on the obama administration
