carolinas. cheryl: that's the breaking news right now, hurricane florence is pounding the north carolina coast with wind gusts up to 90 miles an hour, terrain is hitting the coastline, the storm surge expected to be 7 to 11 feet aboveground in some areas, that's life threatening, florence now category 1 storm, maximum sustained winds at 75 miles per hour. lauren: jeff flock in carolina beach south of wilmington, north carolina with the very latest, we will check in with you, jeff, how are you doing? >> well, good news and bad news i think is the headline on this one, the good news as you report category 1 and now barely category 1. can you imagine a category 4 storm if it had come in that way, here is further good news on that with regard to surge right here along the lower caroal coast, we are in a situation because of the angle or approach of the storm we are being blocked, that's the water

out there, typically if that came head on we would be getting the wind this way, we are getting the wind at us, that's pushing the surge back, tremendous amount of water, we have been getting it all night and expected to getting all day, as perhaps you can see maybe in the dark there's a lot of water in atmosphere and that's going to be the big problem going forward, i think, the winds won't be as much a problem that we thought and we still have power here on carolina beach, that's a positive as the tr -- center circulation will get closer to us it will get worse, we may be able to show you exactly whait looks as the center circulation comes across here. good news and bad news, back to you. lauren: as hurricane florence

turn closer to the coast, threatened to flood the inland as well. cheryl: todd piro in myrtle beach, good morning. >> good morning, guys. in the area where we were we could have been trapped, nobody coming if for a while. we moved to another location that had light the power outages were following us more and more as we made our way down till we found an area, shelter, pretty windy as you can see behind me here, take a look, tropical storm warnings, tropical lancaster, lexington.

showing how expansive the storm s more evidence of that, check this out, more amazing, international space station images of a wildly far-reaching storm that's going to lingering and while winds are always a concern in a hurricane, huge worry with florence in south carolina is life-threatening water. >> something else that you may not have heard before is that we may have landslides in the up state as a result of this and that's because i think it's about 7-inches of rain maybe expected in up state, so this is still a very, very dangerous storm not only on the coast but also in the interior of the state and the very unusual part is going to last about 2 days. >> so you are seeing wind obviously big concern is the rain, the national weather service has issued warning,

that's a long period of time, some of the report that is we are seeing indicate that this area, low-lying area could receive rain up to 30-inches, back to you. cheryl: todd piro, myrtle beach, south carolina, let's bring what's happening with florence, yo, he joins us now. good morning. >> good morning. cheryl: what are you seeing from your forecast and models as far as florence goes? >> it's a large storm. highest winds 75, 85 miles near the center but also 80, 90-mile gusts, so tremendous amount of energy with the storm, it's focused in one place, instead of just one hay maker hitting people it's just jab, jab and doing it for 24, 36 hours, we've had hurricane-forced winds for

12 hours on the beaches and there's another 12 hours coming so that's 24-hour hurricane, that's something that you don't see at all, you see 2-3-hour hurricanes because they move through quickly but the siege continues, the storm will be located close to willmington, north carolina and near myrtle beach at 2:00 in the morning. you can drive an hour and a half, it's taken 12 hours what you do wilmington to mother bill -- myrtle beach, you can imagine. they've had a foot and a foot and a half of rain plus the wind gusts, the big thing about myrtle beach is if the center comes over them and then starts moving back west, they escape the worst part of this, that's what the national hurricane center has and looking at

things, the looks better than keeping on shore. cheryl: does that mean that the storm will not sit because i think that's what we have been talking about this this was going to be a harvey-like storm because the storm was going to hit still and keep dumping the rain, are you saying it might shift a little bit or -- >> relative --s are sort of sitting to go to only -- to only move from where it is now to myrtle beach by tomorrow morning. cheryl: that's not much, okay. >> harvey didn't exactly sit, it just moved very, very slowly and we said, well, it was sitting around because it was only within 75 miles from where it was one day, this is what it's going to be, so these bands, you can see how extensive it is on the radar, shift the 75-mile southwest, you are still going to be getting pounded away in the areas that are getting

pounded now except the -- the storm expand as they come ashore and they stay close to the coast it continues, when it gets in the mountains -- cheryl: joe, i don't have a lot of time with you, really quick, how many days do you think the storm will be active, a week, are we talking a week-long event, 4 days, 5 days? >> well, it's going to be in pennsylvania in 5 days dumping so a different aspect of that. you'll be hearing of this particular storm doing something 5, 6 days away but it's not not going to sit for north carolina over 5 or 6 days, a day or two, up to 3 days is amazing, you see that out over the ocean all of the time, you don't see it right on land. that's because pattern shifted a little bit to the west, take a

look at track of hurricane jenny. cheryl: i'm just trying to get through florence, thank you once again, you have been a great voice for the show this week as we cover florence, joe, thank you, sir. >> thank you for having me. lauren: national hurricane center is warning that catastrophic flooding is expected in many parts to have carolinas, the storm surge could be as high as 11 feet in some areas, we want to give you an idea of what a surge of that size really looks like, this is a simulation that you're looking at, comes from the weather channel, the water level goes up to 9 feet aboveground, that's basically a 1-story building completely under water and that's only 9 feet. florence can bring 11 feet, much of carolina might be under water when this is said and done. cheryl: it's disrupting travel right now. lauren: we will bring adam

shapiro friday morning, he has the business impact of the storm, hi a dam. >> good morning to both of you, yesterday more than 1,000 flights have been canceled and ranging close the other that number again today this morning, 974 flights already canceled, more than 400 of those were supposed to be flying into and out of raleigh in north carolina or at the charlotte douglas international airport in south carolina. a lot of air lines by the we are waving change fees for flyers, most of the ones you see on the screen are even allowing your pets to fly free. lauren: isn't that nice. >> nice gesture. lauren: you have update for us, the storm has not made landfall but still the number of people without power. >> yeah, it's not a huge number yet but it's expected to go grow, north carolina they are getting getting the worst of it so far, 196,000 homes have lost power at this point. in south carolina and virginia not nearly as large as north

carolina but as you pointed out, it's happening and as you can see on the map of north carolina, the dark area, that means those areas are 100% without power. there you go. cheryl: okay, where are people going to stay now, obviously shelter is a big concern for residents right now. >> shelters and even racetracks, air bnb is one service that's offering free housing for people trying to free hurricane florence, displaced neighbors and relief workers stay at their properties for free, major hotel chains like marriott and intercontinental making the process to get in and out much easier, they waved cancellation fees, relaxed pet-stay rules and even racetracks as i pointed out, the atlanta motor speedway, charlotte motor speedway they are offering campground spaces for people who are trying to get away from the coast. cheryl: that was a big controversy down in texas because the shelters weren't

cheryl: welcome back, we will continue special coverage of hurricane florence, first get you caught up on other headlines we are following this morning. first take a look at futures, big day on the market, another good start to markets today, dow up 38, nasdaq is up 25. well, one person has been killed and 13 injured after gas explosions erupted out of three

neighborhoods outside of boston, 60 homes caught fire prompted mass evacuations and power outages, the cause of explosion is still under investigation but believed to be result of gas leaking. cuomo sweeping victory leading 65% of the vote. meanwhile kathy defeated another far-left candidate, race for lieutenant governor and rounding up the day, key races cuomo triumph over progressive law professors in the race for attorney general. staying with the election, former new york mayor reportedly planning a presidential run as a democrat, the self-made billionaire would go up against president trump in 2020 race, bloomberg says that several other leading business figures follow, that's bloomberg news we

should say. they will also follow trump's example and, quote, throw their hats in the ring and lauren, that is your new york edition of what's happening now? lauren: let's get to north carolina, it's not just government agencies and first responders that mobilize dangerous weather that we are seeing today, relief organizations like salvation army come out and force to provide the help, we bring in major mark, he joins us on the phone, good to see you, good morning, sir. >> good morning. lauren: the latest hurricane advisory 18 minutes ago has florence 30 miles east of where you are in wilmington, can you categorize the conditions that you're seeing? >> i'm looking out the window of your shelter building here and there's lots of wind and lots of rain, kind of loud out there this morning and amazing we still have power in our part of wilmington, we are blocks from the river and it's hurricane conditions out there.

lauren: what are salvation army's, the number of presence on the ground, the food and the like in. >> we are gearing up 20 mobile feeding units to come to wilmington area, that'll be supported by a couple of distribution centers, one of which will focus on the food service on mobile units and the other one will focus on actual relief to residents of the cape fear whatever intea everything that we might need to help us get back on our feet. lauren: we are hearing words that some food banks are running out of food already, so what is the case for you and what do you need from people here in new york who want to do something to help? >> certainly, everything from the victims of the hurricane, those coming to help us, first responders, the linemen getting from the power back on and those types of things and the most effective thing and the most

efficient way for people to help is to just give cash donations to the salvation army and multiple ways to do that online, it's the most effective way to do that and the time will come and specific needs that we need and the residents of cape need as well. lauren: from what can you tell what is the evacuation response, did most people heed the warning? >> we actually did a fairly good job of heeding the warnings, you are not seeing traffic on the streets, we have a few follow that we are following at homes. lauren: at what point would we be able to know when rescue crews will be able to save people who did not evacuate. >> i imagine another day, we are expecting most to have day today to keep the hurricane conditions with rain. lauren: we thank you for your time this morning, be safe. >> thank you. cheryl: well, hurricane florence slamming the carolinas at this

cheryl: that does not down play the danger of the storm. lauren: janice dean tracking it all week for us, she's here with the latest, janice. janice: just because it's category 1 doesn't mean that it'll have catastrophic in fact, this is a water problem, this is going to bring incredible amounts of rain over several days and the storm surge issue continues so there's the center of the storm, we are expecting landfall in the next couple of hours, it is moving very slowly, though, around 5 miles per hour, so that is what is going to be the part of the deadliest problem here or potentially deadly lest problem here is the water and not being able to escape the water, so we will get a new advisory out in the next few minutes and we will bring you that but the bottom line is the storm is about to make landfall, it is stalling and moving slowly and going to drop feet of water and bring in the

potential for over a 10-foot storm surge which we have gotten reports where they've had to rescue 150 people and 200 people are awaiting rescue in newborn where they reported 10-foot storm surge, the forecast is happening and coming true in low-lying areas of the coast of carolina. the center of the storm, wilmington, rainfall is emment, the core of strongest winds coming on shore, wilmington you will start the feel winds, i have seen reports of 100 miles per hour, it's going to continue low crawl across the coast of north carolina and south carolina, here are wind gusts, some areas are not reporting because towers are doing because of winds and rain in storm surge, here are the rainfall concerns, surge and rainfall, that's the take away, not the category or the winds, this is not a wind story, this is like a hurricane sandi for them, it's going to be like a hurricane

harvey for texas in north carolina, somebody will get 20 to 40-inches and somebody has gotten the city of newburn 10-foot surge and that's why people need to be rescued. cheryl: what's scary what you're saying janice of storm surge reasonable 10% of home communities have federal flood insurance and they are looking at that type of storm surge, that's scary. janice: that's scary, i have friends in houston that are not in homes and a lot of them did not have flood insurance either. cheryl: thank you so much again for updating on the storm as always, thank you, janice. lauren: all right, still ahead jurk florence unleashing florence, still hasn't made landfall but pounding north carolina as you can see at this very moment, jeff flock is live in carolina beach, we will check in with him in just a bit. while florence is expected to bring massive beinstruction, we are now learning that many

cuz, um, i thought that was what i needed to do. we got our orders to go overseas and i went to baghdad, iraq. we were transporting a bomb sniffing dog to the polling stations. we rolled over two anti-tank mines, it blew my humvee up, killed my sergeant. after the explosion, i suffered a closed head injury, um, traumatic brain injury, loss of a limb, burns to 60% of my body. when the doctors told me i reached my plateau, i did not want to hear that because i do not believe i have a plateau. so, i had to prove 'em wrong, which i am doing to this day and i will still do until the end of my days. i've gotten to where i am at because of my family. and, the wounded warrior project has helped me

cheryl: breaking news this morning, hurricane florence is pounding the north carolina coast right now. wind gusts 90 miles per hour have been reported, terrain has already started and storm surge could be 7 to 11 feet above the ground in some areas, category 1 storm, maximum sustained winds at 75 miles per hour. lauren: jeff flock live in carolina beach in north carolina, jeff, good morning. >> good morning, guys, yeah, as i said earlier, good news and bad news on this, can you imagine, though, this is a cat 1 storm, 75 miles an hour, we are being blocked by the wind, we are on the side of the building that's blocking the wind, you see in the atmosphere of the water, not so much of a wind event if it was stronger winds we would have lost power by now, debris flying in the air, at this point we don't, of course, the center of circulation is not on us yet, that is still to come

later in the morning perhaps as late as the afternoon. it is that north side of the storm and you always hear us talk about the north side of the storm, counterclock wise rotation comes in, that's the strong side of the storm, that's the stuff that comes off the water and has the most convection and most high winds, we are south of it and that's why we are getting wind in the other direction and pushing that storm surge out, the waves are rolling in but the winds are pushing the waves back, that's a major positive, that will not last, however, all day as the storm gets closer to us and passes by us we will start to get the on shore flow and that's when we get the surge, we need to watch, this doesn't look so bad right now but it's going to get worse before it gets better, cheryl, lauren. lauren: you still have power, jeff? >> yeah, we do, that's a surprise to me but that's because the winds are not as high as they were in forecast at this point. we will see. lauren: all right, thank you very much, jeff flock.

we will check in with meteorologist and severe weather safety expert charlie. >> good morning, lauren. lauren: what happens now, we are wait if r the storm to make landfall, so many people say it doesn't matter the wind is one issue but the water threat is tremendous. what happens now? >> well, first of all, in most hurricanes that hit the united states it's not the wind that kill it is most people it is by far the water, it's the storm surge and then the inches and inches of rain that comes as the storm moves inland, already north of wilmington we've had location with almost a foot of rain and we could get another foot on top of that because this system is slow-moving and as we are seeing in the newborn carolina area, we have people that are stranded, water rescues going on, it's the water that's going to be the big problem with this storm. lauren: oh so water rescues are going on for people who did not

evacuate? >> that's correct. in newborn, north carolina, the onshore, you heard from jeff, he's south of storm, but north they've had the on shore flow for hours and hours and it's been piling the water, the storm surge up into the bay and now you've got the folks in newborn north carolina that are being rescued, lots of people stranded there. lauren: whenever florence finally hits and we deal with with -- you can go back to home in instances, how is that going to work, what should they watch out for? >> well, local officials are going to tell you when you're able to return to the specific areas but for folks who are going through it right now it's such a slow-moving storm, only 5-mile an hour to the west we will see prolonged period of the hurricane-forced winds and wind gusts still 90 miles an hour in

several locations and it's going to be days and days before we see power restored to many of these areas and before the water is able to recede, so this will be a prolonged event. we are also seeing locations where they've had to cut the water service so without power and without water right along the coast and it's going to continue as the flooding rains move inland farther into north carolina and eventually into south carolina. >> yeah, that's exactly what it is, it's the slow movement that's tormenting if you live in the area, i'm assuming there's curfew, are people heeding them, what do you tell people on the ground right now? >> yeah, absolutely, listen to local officials and do what they say to do, the thing right now while the storm is going on, if you decided to stay and you're along the coast you just have to stay put, you cannot get out in these conditions, now where we are seeing water rescues, the city of newborn was putting out

in twitter feed, we are coming for you, they have swift water rescues, seek high ground as you can, most people they were encouraging on feed to get up in attic if they are able to and then hopefully they'll be rescued but this is a price you pay for being -- for staying, for chose to go stay when the conditions are this bad. lauren: yeah, you brought, charlie, you brought up the water rescues, we are hearing there are several because of river flooding because several water rescues in moore head. thank you not only for today but for everything this week, we appreciate you. >> absolutely. cheryl: so far fox news reporting 200 rescues alone and that's within the last hour, the number likely to grow. well storm surges could be up to 11 feet and there's a serious lack of flood insurance in the carolinas that could be devastating for homeowners. lauren: let's talk to adam shapiro with that story and some

of the other florence headlines that we are following right now. hey, adam. >> the storm will cause a flood of insurance claims but analysts are worried that all the recent real estate development along the east coast maybe underinsured, the national flood insurance reports 134306 policies in place as of july 31st to north carolina but that's actually a drop of 3.6% of 2013 and a drop in south carolina too, 204,000 policies in place, so this is a problem. cheryl: devastating, that's what happened in houston, same thing happened with lack of insurance and many people don't have homes still, north carolina is also having to deal with we are now getting reports of price gouging; is that right? >> this is something you see during storms like unfortunately, consumers have 200 complaints in north carolina as florence barreled to carolina coast, people rush to go fuel costs and generators, that

sparked gas shortages, north carolina's attorney general said price gouging law would be enforced and that's important because when you see tough law enforcement saying don't do this, it does have an impact. lauren: a lot of people want to help right now especially if they're not in the area, how do you do that and make sure you're giving your money to the right people? >> this is another issue and americans are incredibly generous and fake charities are going to be vague on how their money is spent, anybody who is asking you from a charitable donations, scammers will use high-pressure tactics, usually if you say go away a reliable charity won't go away. scammers have names that will sound like a real charity but check them out online if you can't get a sufficient online background no way, charity navigator.com is absolutely a trust worthy source. better beaus bureau advising anyone who suffers damage to their home during the storm to be careful of outside

again, bad weather through saturday morning. cheryl: did everyone in myrtle beach heed the warning to leave because we sue many reports this week of residents in these coastal towns saying i'm staying here and i'm going to ride it out, is that going to be a problem in myrtle beach? >> a remarkable number of people, everyone know but a a remarkable number have evacuated. they can watch the television news as well, they know this was a powerful storm coming straight at us that would have been sort of the worst-case scenario, direct hit of category 4 or 5, this may be in the top 5 worst case scenario, a lot of folks did evacuate here, it's very quiet. cheryl: that's the concern about the storm, we saw harvey and we saw the devastation. lev me ask you about the community and more particularly the business community in myrtle

beach, i'm sure you have folks disappointed that they couldn't have to myrtle beach and have the vacation they were planning this weekend, do you feel it's going to take a while for the tourism to come back to myrtle beach or do you think that your town is ready to recover as soon as possible? >> we are ready to recover as soon as possible, we have city staff, public works, fire, police, finance even prepositioned so that they can get out and about as soon as the sunshines again and we can assess the damage, begin the clean-up process, that's our goal to get myrtle beach running up as soon as possible. for those folks who did evacuate out of the flood storm, out of the storm surge zone, that may take a couple of days because the sun comes out back maybe sunday it may be a couple of days before we say all clear. cheryl: all right, you will give us the word and i hope you give us update next week, mark kruea thank you for joining us this

griff jenkins in more-head, north carolina, griff, good morning. >> hey, lauren, good morning, you remember when the authorities told residents don't call us if conditions get too bad, we won't come get you, that is the situation that's unfolding here in morehead city, look at the debris flags in the wind, it is about 75 to 80-mile an hour winds, we are north of where the eyeball is expected to come on in wilmington, separates the barrier island out to sea, the chief of police telling me that it's pounding them with wind and storm surge but the story you're going to hear about all day tomorrow and the next few days is the amount of rainfall and the flooding, the community of new bern, they rescued over 200 people, active

rescues trying to get to 150 or so people, they are getting calls constantly, i'm up to my chest in living room with water, come get me, the authorities telling them to get high ground, get on the roof, you may have to wait a while, that area new bern 40 miles west in morehead city, the dangerous are the river, the river that during hurricane irene caused catastrophic flooding, we have a whole lot of florence to come because she's so big and the amount of rainfall, this could be similar in terms of the water damage to hurricane harvey, you have low lying inland water, farming communities that are sr. the rivers not just the new port river, all feed down here, after we get this water here, the sea wall that i'm standing next to, you can see the surge, it will
