a perspective they have tax breaks in excess and it is not every company is some getting hit by tariff tax some are not but in general you're talking about 100 billion net tax break to this country, and then maybe 20 billion for a certain am of months is 10% on 2 billion trade bounce. out of china where this may go months ahead if this doesn't -- it is still not going to exceed that so until these tariffs spread across the whole world with and start taxing out of germany i don't see it as a huge drag on u.s. stocks doesn't mean it is a positive. but it's just not the negative people expect it to be economist and everybody who has been fear mongering it. >> but you make a great point there that there are things that are counterbalancing effect of tariffs but yeah business up gross century groups have been vocal in their opposition to this. in fact many retailers are saying that this will be a tax on the american consumer. yet apple got off the hook as

the united states a little -- a little higher. so i'm homing that the cause, the talk appears to dim that, in fact, it will encourage negotiations on beth sides and hopefully able to get through this. >> and investors hoping for negotiations and different trade arrangements exceptions things like that but some companies who have a feel for the economy, like fedex -- not missing their words and how they feel about these tariffs. this is what fred smith of fedex says history is very, very clear that countries that pursue most open markets are ones that prosper the most and ones who citizens income increases the most. mercantilism does not work they're against. they've got that on the consumer and on the the economy. >> i think everybody is against a trade war. i don't know anyone that's in favor of it. i think that the president has made it clear that the goal is to move towards lower not higher tariffs. this is a negotiation tactic and

hope and expectation is that, at the end of the day, tariffs will be lower than before this trade began. >> national retail federation is coming out against this as well saying look we're coming into holiday season this is where so many businesses do a chunk of their overall revenue. are you concerned about businesses and how holiday could be affected here if prices were higher for consumers? >> there's no question that during the period that we have this trade tensions that economic growth will be impacted for example in china we know that direct impact will be four tenth of a production and indirect effect in terms of confidence could add three tenths of one percent but tben both countries are doing all right. even china they still have maintained that they're beginning to continue to try to stay close to their growth targets of 6.5%. chinese if you look at the --

relative to where it was -- at the peak this year, the chinese is down 10%. which ironically is pretty close to what the the tariffs are, and here in the united states, of course, the economy is growing gang busters. we had more than 4% growth in the second quarter, and i think that you're going to get something similar. but both countries are negotiating hopefully we'll get a positive resolution. >> unintended consequence of all of this would be china beefing up their manufacturing sector and their ability to produce high items we have to leave it there but we thank you for your perspective there. top story this morning, next monday going to be remarkable moment on capitol hill that is when supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh and accuser christine ford will appear before a senate committee to address accusations he sexually assaulted her in 1980s and drama leading up to event and grueling for both. let's bring in attorney david

little bit better and some folks do a little bit worse. now in this case, is the piece mentioned -- both of the republican candidates in those districts have embraced tax cuts and salt and saying that on net they've delivered more value to voters, and on opposite side democratic candidates said o.c. as you would expect exactly the opposite. it is a tough issue. >> influential states big states with large populations are effected. largely by, by salt, right? so it is interesting that you have in december you have 12 republicans vote against the tax cuts because their seats were in jeopardy. so how does this play out? for republicans -- do you need to fine tune their messaging? >> yeah i think definitely. i don't think the message is well baked at this point and again i think a lot of that has to do with research i don't think a lot has been invested in that. if you look at new jersey races, they're in a tough spot the analysis that certainly is accurate about likely versus
