5:01 pm
speculating why she quit just before the mid-terms but we will show you nikki haley's policy victories that helped both in the trump white house, we have senator bill cassidy weighing in and this hour president trump is heading to iowa taking a big gamble to go on offense over the kavanaugh hearings, former bush 43 official brad blakeman will join me and hurricane michael rapidly intensifying set to hit florida's pack and el tomorrow maximum sustained winds of 125 miles an hour it could be the strongest landfall hurricane in more than a decade, life threatening flash floods and more we'll bring you the latest on that. thank you so much for joining us thank you for watching money, politics we've got the debate behind tomorrow's headlines, i'm elizabeth macdonald, the evening edit starts right now.
5:02 pm
the dow with modest losses down 56 points ending the day at 26, 430 on concerns over global growth and problems overseas also trade issues more on your money in just a second first let's get to florida's gulf coast the panhandle bracing for a potentially deadly cat 3 hurricane michael it may be florida's panhandle strongest landfall in 13 years we're talking again life threatening storm surges, damaging winds, and flooding rain. residents are now frantically fleeing as a wall of water heads their way and mayors of small towns there in the panhandle now say the force of this hurricane could be the greatest that they have seen in nearly six decades. florida, alabama, already in states of emergency. again, the danger is in those life threatening flash floods. remember, cars start to float in just two feet of water. we want to get right to the meteorologist on this story, he's meteorologist paul williams is here with the latest. great to see you when will this
5:03 pm
hurricane hit at what time? we're looking at it hitting by tomorrow afternoon possibly tomorrow evening, but the frontline, we don't just count the eye of it but the front edge of it is already going to start effecting the coast as we speak. its been upgraded to a category 3 hurricane, 120-mile per hour sustained winds moving to the north at about 12 miles per hour look at these wave heights up to 27 wave heights in the middle of the gulf of mexico, so this is a storm that's getting stronger. now a lot of times you hear people talking about shear. well, i want to explain what that means. in this situation, we have limit ed shear in the gulf. now, when you talk about shear, shear is like krypton i'd is to superman, it weakenses the storm so we have no kryptonite so that's why it's upgraded to category 3 and to be honest with my own personal calculations, although we're looking at a category 3 when it strikes i would not be surprised if it turns into a 4 because we're only 10-mile per hour sustained winds away from that. that's how quickly the storm is
5:04 pm
strengthening, remember? now we're looking for the storm to make landfall right along the gulf coast and it's going to cause problems there with storm surging up to six to 10 feet in some areas and so we have active hurricane warnings as well as tropical storm warnings. the last thing i want to cover with you real quickly the significance of these winds we're looking at 120-140-mile per hour gusts along the gulf coast but as you reach further inland look at this we're talking about 80-mile per hour winds reaching up to the depths of georgia going into south carolina and north carolina that's beyond crazy and dangerous so folks do well to seek refuge from this storm. >> liz: paul you make a great point also the oil production is being shut down in the gulf, bp has shut down the oil rigs, platforms are being shut, oil workers are evacuating, and this is an oil story too, paul i'm not asking to weigh in but a fifth of the u.s. offshore oil production and half of it is refining is in that area you're
5:05 pm
covering paul that's a big story >> it's going to be a big story and it really comes back to what we talked about as far as what's happening with those waves out in the middle of the ocean we're talking about this is no way to get past this it's a shut down situation. >> liz: great to see you paul great reporting there sir come back soon we love having you on. let's get to nikki haley resign ing as u.s. ambassador to the u.n. conservatives across-the-boarder have said hayley is a stabiliz ing force in the white house. she stood strong against dictators, and strong against u.n. corruption and terrorist regime. let's take a listen. >> we've cut 1.3 billion in the u.n.'s budget and we've made it stronger and more efficient, and south sudan, we got an armed survivor which was a long time covering, three north korean sanctions packages which were the largest in generation done in a way that we could really work towards denuclearizing
5:06 pm
north korea, the iran deal every country needs to understand you can't overlook all of the bad things they're doing you have to see them for the threat that they are. i think you look at the anti- israel bias and the strengths and courage that the president showed in moving the embassy and showing the rest of the world, we will put our embassy where we want to put our embassy. the u.s. is strong again. >> liz: joining me now is republican senator bill cassidy. senator your reaction to nikki haley there because she was still saying how strong she and the white house have been at the u.n. usually when somebody leaves it's just to say see you later. i mean, she continues to show how the victories that the trump white house via nikki haley have racked up during her time there. >> as a parent i'm willing to accept the between the lines message. she might want to spend more time with her family. she's got two kids who i think are teenagers, i think i know that and she just may want to spend more time with her husband and family. she's had an intense ride and
5:07 pm
those successes have come because she's been so intense. i thank her for her service and i accept her resignation. >> liz: it's a great point you make, senator because she's been six years as governor of south carolina and two years at the u.n. the question is why before the mid-terms? >> at some point there is no good time, right? i just think that she, let's just accept she's a human being with family and she may decide she would rather spend time with her family having accomplished as much as we've accomplished and thinks she's leaving when things are well put. >> liz: it was the best kept secret in a very leaky white house, apparently, john boehner, and john kelly didn't know until later in the game but by trump's standards this is the equivalent to 24 gun salute to nikki haley because when rex teller ton left there was a lot or anger but hayley managed to do a feet not many people have done. she was tough on the middle east and she had a different sort of a president to deal with, and racked up so many victories
5:08 pm
senator, we're talking russia, syria, china, iran standing tough and strong for israel. i mean nikki haley has got a long resume there. >> i totally agree with that and as she said, president trump has shown that he is a man who keeps his word, not a man who establishes a red line and then retreats from the red line. that is good but again i thank her for her service and i accept her explanation. i suspect she would like to have a little bit of a break and maybe live a normal life. >> liz: the media speculation and the conjecture, i'd like your reaction to the media speculation on why nikki haley resigned. let's listen. >> i was governor for six years and we dealt with the hurricane, a thousand year flood, a church shooting, school shooting, it was a lot and then to come in and do two years of russia and iran and north korea its been eight years of intense time and i'm a believer in term limits.
5:09 pm
i think you have to be selfless to know when to step aside and allow someone else to do the job the president has just come out of a major political fight involving the supreme court nominee accused of sexual misconduct at a time when we've been focusing in on the president's standing with female voters we've seen so much anger from women and some folks are questioning the timing saying that hayley doing this now, naturally leads to questions about whether they are related. >> liz: okay maybe nikki haley is just leaving at the top. remember, that's what jerry seinfeld said you should always leave when you're winning. nikki haley's approval rating, sir, are coming in at 75% from republicans and 55% approval rating from democrats. remember hillary clinton got a 60% approval rating when she was secretary of state so maybe since she's got great approval ratings too. >> i actually think that the press would rather focus upon this than upon the economic numbers that just came out,
5:10 pm
because yes, it is important that she leaves, but on the other hand for people to talk about economic numbers which show record low unemployment for women, or no records since 1965 which is to say the highest level of employment for women since 1965 under a trump presidency, and wage growth beginning to happen. 224,000 jobs created in september, pop pop pop all good things. i suspect democrats would rather talk about nikki haley with some sort of chaos as opposed to the numbers would show a very strong economy. >> liz: we should know that president trump said nikki haley told him six months ago she wanted to leave but the media is reporting how the administration was taken by surprise. let's watch. president trump: she told me probably six months ago she said you know, maybe at the end of the year, at the end of the two- year period but at the end of the year i want to take a little time off. >> i think it was shock to a lot of people. >> ambassador hayley's
5:11 pm
departure caught just about everyone off guard. there was a sense of surprise. >> even president trump was caught by surprise by the timing >> resigning in a move that surprised the white house state department top officials. the white house was scrambling this morning to figure out how to manage this. we are definitely hearing of sources from shock even within the white house and beyond. >> we're still trying to drill down on exactly when the president was told. >> liz: what's your reaction to that? >> i think that she would rather be at home during halloween giving out candy, cutting turkey over thanksgiving , and celebrating christmas in her family home, than dealing with one more set of emergencies. she has served honorably. but somebody has to have a life and i think she's chosen that life. >> liz: senator let's move on president trump apologizing to justice kavanaugh and his family at last night's ceremony swearing in as supreme court justice. now we're in a four-week race to the mid-terms. it's all about telling the narrative. the president going on offense. he's making a big gamble. he has a busy campaign schedule.

his is this, spread the word that the allegations against justice kavanaugh were "a hoax" setup by the democrats and to cast kavanaugh's opponents as the"mob." watch. president trump: on be half of our nation i want to apologize to brett and the entire kavanaugh family for the tear obviously pain and suffering you have been forced to endure. those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation. not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception. >> liz: okay critics are saying that is a direct attack on christine blasey ford and sexual assault victims. now, hillary clinton is criticizing president trump for politicizing justice kavanaugh's swearing in, despite justice kavanaugh saying the ceremony is "not a partisan or political institution." watch. >> what was done last night in
5:13 pm
the white house was a political rally. it further undermined the image and integrity of the court, and that troubles me greatly. it saddens me, because out judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government. >> liz: senator, hillary clinton saying president trump is politicizing the supreme court. your reaction? yeah, if senator clinton or secretary clinton seems to think that people who are conservative are deplorable then maybe she doesn't care their reputations be destroyed that they themselves be destroyed. i actually think that it was appropriate to signal to the kavanaugh family and all others who might volunteer their service that you don't have to go through this and hopefully if you do go through it we thank you but hopefully you will not. i think it was kind of base to say is it justified and even to continue to fight, i'm sorry that senator clinton did that.
5:14 pm
>> liz: senator cassidy great to have you on sir thank you so much. >> thank you. >> liz: moving on to business headlines google is now challenging a record $5 billion anti-trust fine from the eu. the eu slapped google with that fine, for allegedly abusing its dominance of its android operating system on smartphones, and the 10-year treasury yield falling just slightly to the downside, after hitting a seven year high earlier in the day. this effects all of your loan rates like mortgage rates. now let's get to the markets and check your money the three major indices ending the day mixed, ashley webster on the floor of the new york stock exchange with the latest. ashley: well liz it was one of those days where the markets seem to run 100 miles but only gain about a mile. lots of up and down throughout the day but in the end the dow finished down about 56 points, closing at 26, 460, the nasdac up a little and s&p also finish ing down by about 4 points it was one of those sessions where we saw the big cap tech

numbers don't matter there. >> they do. >> liz: because president trump has the right all presidents, ford, have the right to select their own supreme court nominees it doesn't matter about the poll s. >> if you like the electoral college and two people from each state representing in the senate is not conspiracy against the left. these have been the rules since the late 1780s written down in the constitution. this is a case where the democrats don't get their way and are misleading and trying to blow the country up. >> that's not true ford. >> liz: hillary clinton said we should get rid of the electoral college. ford and wendy you've been great thank you so much. >> thank you. >> liz: newly confirmed justice brett kavanaugh hiring, look at this, the supreme court's first ever all-woman team of law clerks. you won't believe what the media has to find negative about that we're bringing in brea payton , joining me next. this is loma linda,
5:41 pm
a place with one of the highest life expectancies in the country. you see so many people walking around here in their hundreds. so how do you stay financially well for all those extra years? well, you have to start planning as early as possible. we all need to plan, for 18 years or more, of retirement. i don't have a whole lot saved up, but i'm working on it now. i will do whatever i need to do. plan your financial life with prudential. bring your challenges.
5:44 pm
brett kavanaugh hiring the supreme court court's first-ever all women team of law clerks, did you hear about that in the media? but the left already giving that story a negative spin, saying that this just feels like pandering. >> the female clerks i guess that's great. he's talked about that before. it felt a little bit like pandering to me and as i said before there was not really anything new. this is the way he introduced himself. >> and maybe safe as best. >> sure. stick to the script. >> its worked. >> i guess but i don't know it's going to work to make women still upset about the treatment of dr. christine blasey ford feel any better. >> liz: let's take it up with brea peyton. it's great to see you. justice kavanaugh was on the circuit court for nine years and he hired female law clerks over that nine-year period routinely, so i mean, was he pandering nine years ago? >> right. yeah, he's retroactively pandering for something that came up recently, right? this is totally absurd and
5:45 pm
ridiculous and i think that it's very clear at this point that nothing that he does will ever appease those on the left who are convinced that he is somehow a serial gang rapist. i mean that's just going to clearly stick in the lefts mind and never going to be erased no matter what he does so he mesas well just continue what he has been doing for the past 10 years and throughout his entire career which is elevating women and always making sure to reach out to them which is talking about his mother's experience as a female attorney in the 70s. >> it's so shocking we're talking about this serial gang rape charge because if that were true, why didn't these women report it to the police instead of going to the reporters or politicians and if that were true, i mean, serial gang rapists continued to rape, and we haven't heard any of that. i mean that's what's disturbing about this, brea, right? >> yeah, absolutely and i think that that's something we should always be encouraging women to do is to feel brave and empowered enough to report what happens to them.
5:46 pm
>> liz: yes, yes, absolutely. just because you question the story doesn't mean you're like a holocaust denier and that's what's going on here when you want to get to the truth and the facts. we feel for sexual assault victims people should support them 100% but this is a different take on this story and a different spin, take on that, brea. >> oh, yeah absolutely and as a woman, we all know women who have had to suffer abuse like this at the hands of a man. it's unfortunately very pervasive and i understand why a lot of women feel that they can't talk about it or can't report or feel ashamed about it and i think that we need to encourage women to not feel that way to encourage them to always always always go to the police if you've been the victim of a crime to always do that and i think that's something we should be applauding and en consider aging. stand up and support women who have been sexually assaulted 100 %. here is what else is going on, i want your reaction to this the liberal media again going all in criticizing justice kavanaugh's confirmation.
5:47 pm
i want your reaction after the sound bites, watch. >> women were saying that you cannot impose this on us you can't send us back to the 50s but mitch mcconnell says yes i can. >> the president says he's for law and order but not when it comes to sexual assault. that's quite clear. >> this is in many ways a crushing defeat for women and women's rights. >> trump has delivered for these people on the things that they care about most. he has delivered racism for these people. he has delivered massage en it for these people and now he's delivered the supreme court for these people we'll see if this reign that they now have control overall three branches of government we're going to see if this reign lasts for 30 days or two years. >> calling up nazism there i wonder how holocaust victims and their families feel with comparisons lick that go ahead, brea. i find it honestly hilarious to watch men try to explain to me how i should feel about brevard
5:48 pm
about these allegations and i do get frustrated when some women who have a different opinion than i do try to say they're speaking for me or that they're speaking for all women. that's something that's simply not true and we've seen republican women and conservative women, these save increasingly in polling data in poll after poll after poll they have been energized by what's happened to brett kavanaugh. >> liz: so what's next for the me too movement? some women here in new york city have said to me and they're democrat and said the me too movement needs a section for moving on and redemption. what is your take on that? >> yeah, so i actually had kind of a longer piece about this over at the federalist that you can read in which i talked about when attitudes towards me too and overwhelming majorities say that me too hasn't really done anything for them personally and this is like a cbs poll that i cited in my work there. i think ultimately and i've been skeptical from the me too movement almost from the very beginning. i think it's very clear it's a movement that's not for all
5:49 pm
women. it's a movement for specific kinds of women, right? it's not a movement for conservative women. it's not a movement for other women who might disagree on issues of abortion and other things like that. it's very clearly political and we can see that by all of the victims that have been left out by all of the clinton accusers, monica lewinsky and all of these other women that are purposely left out of that conversation and left out of that movement it is very clearly, it's for certain women and certain women only. >> liz: it feels politically opportunistic. brea peyton thanks for coming in just in time for the christmas shopping season facebook wants to sell you a spy device to put in your living room. the details are next, stay there >> we didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility and that was a big mistake and it was my mistake and i'm sorry. i started facebook, i run it, and i'm responsible for what happens here. all money managers might seem the same,
5:50 pm
but some give their clients cookie cutter portfolios. fisher investments tailors portfolios to your goals and needs. some only call when they have something to sell. fisher calls regularly so you stay informed. and while some advisors are happy to earn commissions whether you do well or not. fisher investments fees are structured so we do better when you do better. maybe that's why most of our clients come from other money managers. fisher investments. clearly better money management.
