some u.s. companies, gary, are coming out and saying we are going to be affected by the trade war, that still continues to be a threat, xi jinping and president trump are not going to see each other until the end of november, will we be watching industrials, big-tech consumer stocks still under pressure? >> well, let's talk about the trade, for example, even if every tariff on china is imposed and collected and, remember, a lot of these haven't hit yet. it's only .2% of gdp. right now companies are trying to use that as cover in case earnings aren't good but you said it yourself, you and lauren at the top of the segment, we have earnings for american express, earnings from unilever, paypal, these are all exceeding expectations. we just saw netflix subscriber growth go through the roof and we have new technologies coming, i was just reading about 5g which is starting to be rolled out to major cities, 100 times

cheryl casone. lauren: happy friday, good morning, everybody, i'm lauren simonetti. cheryl: do i need a small tissue or large tissue? lauren: maybe soft tissue because you'll be crying a lot. trade war between u.s. and china is really starting to bite china, beijing reporting that the economy grew 6 and a half percent in the third quarter, sounds like a great number but actually the slowest pace of growth for china in nearly a decade. and the slowdown expected to continue as full effects from u.s. tariffs start to hit domestic economy. we bring in matt, economist at wells fargo, happy friday, mark. >> good morning. lauren: we've got gdp numbers, consumption down, does this weaken china's ability to negotiate with the u.s. in trade war? >> well, command and control economy, they have a lot of negotiating space because

they're not a democratic system like we have here and this certainly -- it does increase urgency. i think that china wants to come to a deal. it also puts -- opens window in how it's likely to impact the global economy, we've never really been in a position since world war ii where we've had another economy this large other than the united states and with china slowing that's likely to reburberate. lauren: some rhetoric is interesting is this including this from vice premier, frankly psychological impact is bigger than the actual impact. do you think chinese investors believe words like this coming from the government as they try to sway the situation? >> well, he's probably accurate but but they are both pretty big impacts, psychological impact is

always larger than actual impact because psychological takes not only information that you've given it but extends it forward. and so that's what his statement was aimed at was trying to tap down those diminished expectations going forward. he's right the psychological impact is larger than economic impact. china is state-owned industries that are incredibly insufficient, they make half of all the world's steel and some of it made with modern technology but a lot of it is made with most antiquated technology that pollutes the heck out of the environment. those types of adjustments will be difficult. lauren: do you think the u.s. has to watch how we play hardball with china, i'm say if you look at big multinationals, tiffany, former coach, when

china slows, consumption is down, we are affected too. >> well, that's all very true, if you look at state economies even it's not uncommon, west coast, of course, the ties with china are very strong but even on the east coast, fastest growing export market for south carolina, north carolina, for georgia is china and so certainly a slowdown in china is going to be felt in those economies but also a price to be paid if we don't modernize our trade relationship with china. our trade relationships, current rules that we are operating under were largely put in place back at the turn of the century and china was much smaller economy, impact on the economy was much less and the current system is not working right. lauren: modernize is a good word, mark vitner, have a good weekend. cheryl: a lot going on this morning, shift in tone towards saudi arabia, president trump for the first time saying he believes jamal khashoggi is dead. and he is warning of severe

punishment if turns out the saudi arabia government was behind murder. jonathan, good morning. >> good morning, cheryl. cheryl: lots of questions for you, first, i want you to listen and get your opinion on the tone from president trump when he spoke about what to do with the saudis, listen to this. >> what are you considering for possible consequences for saudi based on those -- >> well, it'll have to be very severe. i mean, it's bad, bad tough. but we will see what happens. cheryl: do you think that the president seems committed to dealing with the saudis if, indeed, the investigation shows he was murdered by them in. >> this whole situation is so visible, cheryl, world wide that is not as if the president can ignore what's going on. he understands what's happening, treasury secretary mnuchin pulled out of the economic summit coming up in rhiyad because he understood that the gravity of the situation.

so, you know, from here on out the investigation by the saudis and the turks needs to play out and the united states needs to take the right decision in terms of how to address what the outcome is, wherever the chips may fall. cheryl: chips to be falling toward salman, bs, for short, he is aide to prince, now photograph of him in turkey at the same time walking into the consulate, this seems to really point towards the fact that the crown prince knew what was going on. >> yeah, cheryl, the evidence is coming in and some of the stuff is looking pretty darn damming and really what has to happen here is calmer minds need to prevail. for instance, yesterday a bunch of human rights organizations were holding press conference at the united nations calling for the un to begin an investigation

into this matter right away because the saudis are white-washing the situation. well, that may be the case that we will discover that saudis have not done enough to figure out what has really happened here, to implicate those, but we need to allow, you know, sensible minds to come together here because the consequences are huge here. cheryl: jonathan, let me interrupt you, even folks in president trump's own party are saying enough is enough, they want action, listen to mike from texas. >> whether the crown prince had a role i think is a key question here and i agree that we shouldn't just rely on saudi investigation, we should have our intelligence community and fbi intlook this. cheryl: the fbi, jonathan, what do you make of that? >> i think it's important that the united states understand, i'm not saying at all that we should back off and not keep

maximum scrutiny on what's happened here and actually move to do an investigation ourselves if we are not happy that the truth has not been revealed here. absolutely. in fact, maybe even the united nations investigation will be necessary to -- to exert pressure on saudi arabia if they are found to be white-washing, but the ramifications of the outcome here, you know, what happens, what happens to the saudi government as a result of this, all this impacts on many things that affect international geopolitics here in a huge way, everything from israeli-palestinian peace process, containing iran, international trade to the world. cheryl: i know, there's so much. there's so much and in relationship they have been key strategic ally with unrest in the middle east, thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> pleasure. lauren: activist investor dan lobe taking fight with campbell

astounding, this is the party running on citizens united and setting record after record for money and politics, so the hypocrisy there is something to be hold. lauren: speaking of money, let's talk about the economy, national economy is strong and it is in minnesota. you many big companies there, 3m, target, but you have a democratic governor. >> there's concern in minnesota that we don't have the companies and headquarters that we used to, capital is leaving and that is a consistent problem and if you take a look at the growth and parts of country that are not in upper midwest, certainly the south and the areas that have a better tax climate are getting capital and labor, investment so we are concerned in minnesota even though things are good and even though the tax cut and job's act did refund about $3,000 for a family of 4 in minnesota, so it will get measurably worse if we run around and tell people that we will raise taxes which of course

my opponent is doing and i'm not. lauren: you have the farmer support back in 2016 when you won, with looming trade war do you think you have farmer support? >> this is the art of the deal in fairness to the president, if you look at the pending agreement with the eu, if you look at what we have done with united states-méxico-canada agreement, we are making progress. the dairy farmers will have some access to canadian dairy markets, i think that's progress. the farmers are sticking with us. remember, when you talk about doubling the estate tax that is huge, estate tax exemption i should say, that's huge for farmers who wanted pass on farms to kids and estate tax which is bigger problem for estate tax thankfully with the bill that we have allows them to do that in many circumstances. i'm counting on support from agriculture and i think we will

get. lauren: finally health care, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says if republican keep congress they will go again at trying to repeal and replace obamacare, you say in your district premiums have gone up 3 times, so what would you do, would you vote if you are elected again to reveal obamacare or would you try to fix the current system that we have to bring premiums down? >> no one thinks health care is better under obamacare which we are still under in minnesota. do you want to go medicare for all, socialize medicine, 32 trillion-dollar scheme, doubling payroll and income taxes won't come close to covering costs, eliminate employer-base coverage, medicare as we know it. that's where the democrats are going, socialized medicine. market-base reform that allows prices to float so we can get the young and healthy back in insurance pools to subsidize the sick, that's what need to do and we will stick with that. lauren: congressman lewis, thank you for your time.
